Meythaler, Chicago, IL. Mr. Meythaler, Joyce “Bobbie Sox” Jacobson born in Monroe, a graduate of UW, founded the Playskool Manufacturing Co., serving as its president and CEO from 1940 until they sold in 1969. They made many educational toys, “Learning While Playing”. They purchased the J.L. Wright Company makers of Lincoln Logs in 1943. J.L. Wright’s father was Frank Lloyd Wright. Playskool had reported sales of $23 million in 1966. Playskool was purchased by the Milton Bradley Co. makers of board games such as Monopoly. The herd was established as a hobby for Mrs. Lois Meythaler, some say as a way to divert her time away from the cocktail hour. Cold Springs Farm was big buyers in the Welcome In Dispersal selecting 20 head including the dam of Welcome In Stretch. Herdsmen there included Dale Homer, Russell Ridge Sr., (his son Russ Jr. is Dairy Supt. WI State Fair), Nelson McCammon and Jimmy Price. In April 1968, Cold Springs Farm sold their complete female herd to Red Brae Farm, Eagle.

1963 Red Brae Farm, Eagle, was started by Mr. Lyle Spencer of Chicago, IL. Mr. Spencer formed the educational publishing firm, Science Research Associates (SRA) in 1938. SRA was sold to IBM in 1964. While at SRA’s helm, Spencer served as a trustee of three universities, was a director of what is now the United Negro College Fund, and sat on the visiting committees for education at Harvard University and the University of Chicago. The Spencer Foundation was established in 1962 to investigate ways education could be improved around the world. Upon Spencer’s death in 1968, the Spencer Foundation received a large endowment. The foundation began making 1963 formal grants in 1971. The foundation has since made grants Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Spencer totaling nearly $500 million. James Armbruster was the manager of Red Brae Farm at the time of Mr. Spencer’s death. Jim and his brothers, Edgar and Andrew purchased the Red Brae herd. They joined forces with two Holstein herds in 1974, Bristol Farm and Elmwood Farm to form Marana Dairy in AZ. The Swiss cows not able to make to trip in 1974 were kept in Eagle and formed the nucleus of the herd that moved to Muscoda in 1993. Edgar and his wife Phyllis along with sons Steve, David and Eric run the farm. Daughters Jill, Lea Ann and Beth add their help and their 2 cents when needed.
