My friend’s daughter is gritty - she’s been bucked off, stepped on, worked her horses early in the morning and late at nightand because of that, I have no doubt she’ll be successful in whatever she chooses to do in life. After a summer of traveling to shows and marveling at our dairy kids in the barns, I have no doubt your kids will be too! So keep encouraging them to ‘get back up again’ — I can’t wait to hear all their success stories!

World Dairy Expo is right around the corner - see us in Arena Booth #193 - stop and say hello!

· Let your daughters grow up in the barn. Let them learn that buckets need filling and stalls need cleaning, even when it’s raining, even when it’s frozen, even when they have a different idea of how the day should go.

This all comes to mind after a conversation at the barn where I board my horses. The owner of the barn is a good friend, and her oldest daughter is a lovely, accomplished, intelligent 17-year-old with great grades and a tremendous work ethic. My friend was telling me how her daughter is really, really anxious about the decisions she has to make in the coming year about her future - that she’ll ‘get it wrong’ and that ‘she doesn’t know what she wants to do’. We both agreed that very few 17-yearolds know what they want for the rest of their life, and I hope her daughter feels reassured by that.

ate summer means back to school for many families and whether your kids are entering kindergarten or college, those feelings of excitement, anticipation, and nervousness are universal. I’ve been thinking a lot about this transitional time of year, and how we stress the right classes, the good grades, and the right ‘path’ for our kids no matter their age. Yet, as adults, we know that life doesn’t always hand you a straight line from A to B to Csometimes there are twists and turns and exit ramps we don’t anticipate.

I love this. It gets to the crux of what helps most people to be successful in life - it’s not always a grade point average, or the university degree, or committing to the right summer internships (though those things are great!). It’s helping our kids develop that essential quality of ‘grit’. Whether it’s in the classroom or the show ring or the job interview, sometimes things don’t go your way. It’s what you do next that is the real test.

‘It may sound strange, but many champions are made champions by setbacks.’

L

· Teach them to drive trucks and trailers and ATVs. Teach them to change tires and wrap legs and give shots. And let them leave a spur mark, a bit rub, or a bandage bow, and let them deal with the shame of causing pain to an animal they love.

while it’s girl- and horse-specific, every word applies to all our kids in the cattle world too:

· Parents, let your daughters grow up to be horse girls, because they will learn quickly and repeatedly that life isn’t fair, that hard work is often trumped by Lady Luck, and that every defeat, no matter how terrible, is temporary. Let them dream big and kick on. Let them learn confidence, grace, and grit. Let them build big muscles and strong backs.

· Let them grow with horses and with good horse people, because it will teach them to be humble, and to be resilient and to be brave.

So maybe your kid failed the spelling test or got cut from the team or is going back to college and changing their major again - that’s all OK as long as they’re still trying or finding a new path to success. And you know what? That applies to us as adults too. Maybe we had to sell the cows or we had to look for a new job at an age we thought we’d be past job huntingstarting over or starting again as an adult takes a lot of grit too!

Getting Gritty !

A story related by so many prominent, successful people in our business - I’m sure you’ve heard it too - tells how the first time they went to a show, they stood dead last. No one goes to a show thinking that’s what will happen, but someone stands last in every class at every show. What amazes me is how many of those people used that as a launchpad and motivation to do better - people that have gone on to have the Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo even! That’s grit - equal parts of passion and perseverance, and that’s the best thing we can encourage our kids to develop.

The very next day, I came across this post on a Facebook page aimed at middleaged women who own horses (me!). And

liked and followed their development. One of those heifers was a very off-age May 1st heifer born in 2001. “I mainly buy and sell show cattle, so I couldn’t really deal on her because she was so off-age, but she always caught my eye. She had such a pretty cut and beautiful frame,” he recollects. “I had made a note of when she was due to calve and made sure to drop by the farm soon after. Mitch had a greenhouse barn, and boy, there were times it felt like a greenhouse in there! It was the early summer of 2003 and she was recently fresh, standing in this very warm barn still wearing some long, rough winter hair, but boy, I couldn’t buy her fast enough!”

production record over 18,000M with 5.4% fat and 3.9% protein - foreshadowing the high production and great components she would become known for in years to come.

The story of Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous begins in the Reaboro, Ontariobased herd of Mitch Vandenberg, in the Kawartha Lakes area of central Ontario. Jeff Stephens, a fellow Ontario Jersey breeder and cattle marketer, remembers his trips to the farm well. “Mitch had a real nice herd of cows. People might have thought of him as more of a commercial producer, but he was always really interested in genetics. He would always ask who the good, new bulls were every time I stopped in there,” Jeff recalls. “He had a lot of good blood from the Springflood and Enniskillen cow families in his pedigrees that really laid a solid foundation for his herd.”

“In April 2005, I bought four cows from Jeff and Mike that day. I knew two of them were quite special and I was happy with the deal we made. I knew those two were really the right kind, but what I didn’t know is how Gorgeous would develop. Honestly, from the day she arrived and moved into her boxstall, she just got better every day for years,” says Steve. He had also purchased cattle from the Vandenberg herd over the years. “I had bought a ton of cows from that herd - he bred some great cows. It was a commercial, freestall setup, but really good blood,” Steve says, concurring with Jeff’s Gorgeousthoughts.was now ensconced in her forever home at Rapid Bay in Ornstown, Quebec. She calved again in late October

Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous has earned a place in the Jersey history books as not only a 3X Royal Grand Champion, but also 100% of her daughters in Canada are VG or EX.

Fresh again in July 2004 with a Deluxe heifer, people really started to take notice of Gorgeous during her junior 3-yearold campaign which included a Grand Champion title at the Ontario Summer Show on her way to capturing the Reserve AllCanadian Junior 3-Year-Old award at the end of the season. She had also made a nice

aming cows can be a bit of a gamble. Not so much when you’re describing a basic quality - Ebony for a black cow, Bianca for a white one, or even Chocolate Chip for a Jersey. But when you go out on a limb and give one a special name signifying her attractiveness, it can be a roll of the dice. But, sometimes it all works out - the Holstein breed has had a couple of prominent ‘Beautys’, but in the Jersey breed, there’s only one ‘Gorgeous’!

Gorgeous was embarking on her show career during the tumultuous early days of the US / Canada border being closed due to BSE. No live cattle were being allowed from Canada into the US, and as the closure stretched on, Michael Heath thought he’d better divest himself of some of his Canadian inventory. And that’s where Stephen Borland of Rapid Bay Jerseys enters the Gorgeous story.

Jeff always found a few in herd to ask a price on and admits that if he asked about ten or twelve, he might drive out of the yard owning only one or two. But he always kept track of the heifer and cows in the herd he

Jeff soon had Michael Heath as a partner on the young cow, and thought with time that she could develop into something special. “She didn’t have the deepest pedigree, but she was by Piedmont Grove Amedeo, one of my favorite bulls to this day. They could be slower maturing, but he always put such balance, dairy strength, rib, and good udders on his daughters. I wasn’t worried if she needed another calving,” notes Jeff. Even needing a bit more time, she was 6th junior 2-year-old at the 2003 Royal Winter Fair to kick off what would be a long and legendary show ring career.

Steve flushed her to a number of different sires - seventeen in total - and she transmitted well every time. “She just bred so well. She never made a dud. Not only with the good type, but also her high components. Her daughters all have that high butterfat test, and many of her sons pass that on as well. Rapid Bay Grandious, for example, her Connection son has just crazy high component percentages,” notes

her to this day. “She really was picture perfect. There’s not many cows you wouldn’t change a thing about, but it was true of Gorgeous. She was so easy to get ready for the show - you didn’t have to glue her teats, you didn’t have to bag different quarters with different hours. You just milked her out the night before and let her Androll.”it’s not like Stephen Borland hadn’t seen a good cow before. In the 1990s, he worked with one of the all-time greats, Duncan Belle EX-93, and had bred Rapid Bay Whistler’s Rumour EX-95-6E, just to point out a couple of cows in the herd that has garnered numerous All-Canadian nominations over the decades. Gorgeous kept doing every single thing right, and Steve realized he had a potential franchise cow in his barn. “She was so easy to work with and one of the smartest cows I ever knew. But I worried about her so much once I realized what I had. I’d get up at 2:30am to go check on her. Eventually, I put cameras in the barn so I could check

of 2005 with a Jewels Jurisdiction son subsequently named Yellow Briar Heath Guapo, who would sire a number of Excellent multiple ‘E’ cows from limited use. Gorgeous promptly scored EX-93 and went on to claim her first Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion title as well as the AllCanadian 4-Year-Old honor for 2005. Three months later, she was moved up in score to EX-95. She showed at the Royal a year later on that same lactation where she won the 5-Year-Old class and was named Reserve Grand Champion. She was voted the AllCanadian 5-Year-Old for 2006, her second All-Canadian title in the same lactation.

Steve had started to flush her, and her first ET babies hit the ground in December 2006 - three heifers sired by Jade that eventually went on to score VG-87, VG-89 and EX-90 and were the first indicators that not only was Gorgeous a great show cow, she was on her way to becoming a tremendous brood cow as well. Her first ET sons - Rapid Bay Glasgow and Rapid Bay Grand Prixwere born in early 2007 and would enter Steve’s Rapid Bay sire program.

Impressive lineup at Rapid Bay, with nearly 80% of the herd tracing back to Gorgeous through daughters & granddaughters or sons & grandsons.

She really was picture perfect. There’s not many cows you wouldn’t change a thing about, but it was true of Gorgeous.”

Gorgeous had 36 sons and daughters. Of her 20 daughters, 16 were scored in Canada and all 16 are VG or EX. Her Excellent daughters include three at EX-93, three at EX-94, and one at EX95. Of all those matings, Steve considers the cross with Impressive Indiana to be the most successful. “Because of Rapid

She charged on through the 2007 show season like in previous years - winning her Mature Cow class at the Royal, and taking the Grand Champion crown. But then she took it a step further and was named Supreme Champion of the whole event. People loved her amazing udder, her balance, and her stylish frame - and how she looked so fabulous while also bolstering the production side of her pedigree - making almost 27,000M in that lactation with 5.7%F and 4.2%P.

He estimates that 80% of his herd now traces to Gorgeous either through daughters or granddaughters or through her sons, and he thinks his herd is as good now as it’s ever been. Steve has built a number of relationships in South America over the years through partnerships and in exporting cattle. He’s sold a few Gorgeous offspring to that market, but has been fairly cautious selling them in North America. He’s loosened his grip on the granddaughters and greatgranddaughters and they are starting to shine in other herds across the continent.

Steve continues to do a lot of ET work in his 40-cow herd - making 300-400 embryos each year, with 200 of those destined for export to a number of different markets worldwide. Of that number, a high percentage are Gorgeous descendants, so her genetics are continuing to have a global influence.

Every great cow has an end to her own story, and sadly, for Gorgeous that happened when she was 11 1/2. She developed a microscopic lung issue and never recovered. She was buried on the farm in Ormston where she had thrived and gained a worldwide following. But her influence continues on through her daughters and sons, so her continuing story really has no end. Steve Borland is the official judge for the Jersey Show at the Royal Winter Fair this coming November. It’s a fitting continuation of her legacy that he will undoubtedly place many of her descendants throughout the day on the very grounds where she claimed so much glory.

Her popular sons like Rapid Bay Getaway (by Reagan), Rapid Bay Gunman (by Response), Rapid Bay Grandious (by Connection), and Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry have sired National Grand Champions, National Junior Champions, and continue to make exciting show winners to this very day. Gentry was the Premier Sire of the heifer show at the 2021 International Jersey Show in Madison, WI. Rapid Bay Sires markets about 20 bulls at a time, and currently Steve estimates that half or more are Gorgeous sons.

Bay Sires, I used some of our own bulls and bulls that would be a little unique. Indiana was quite rare and his mother - C Tops Impressive - was hot at the time, so he was something a little different, which I always tried to breed for. That mating produced Rapid Bay Gentry, as well as Rapid Bay Indiana Grace EX-94-3E, and Rapid Bay Indiana Glory EX-93-2E - both of these cows are breeding on incredibly and have really continued to shape our herd the way Gorgeous started.”

Her daughter, Rapid Bay Indiana Glory-ET EX-93-2E already has three EX and

three VG daughters. Her full sister, Rapid Bay Indiana Grace-ET EX-94-3E, was the Reserve All-Canadian Junior 3-Year-Old in 2014 and has four VG 2-year-old daughters - one at VG-88 and three at VG-87. She also has a number of younger daughters yet to calve. One of those, Rapid Bay Miss Lady Grace 8396-ET (by Premier) was the winning fall calf and Reserve Junior Champion at the 2022 California Spring Jersey Show for judge Mike Deaver, who incidentally was the judge to tap her as Grand Champion at the Royal in 2009. At the same show, the Intermediate Champion, Pacific Edge Gunman Deviant, was sired by Rapid Bay Gunman, Grace’s maternal brother. Her Joyride son, Rapid Bay Train Station-ET has just entered service at Rapid Bay Sires and he’s a bull that Steve is especially excited about.

Some of Steve’s final and best memories about his Hall of Fame cow were made in 2009. She calved in late July and by August, she had a calcium problem that just would not get resolved. Steve took her to the university vet hospital and she stayed there for 23 days. Steve stayed there too - he milked her and fed her every day and slept in an armchair by her every night. “She wasn’t getting enough calcium, and she lost so much weight. She got so skinny - she looked like she was only a foot wide. But once she got turned around, she charged ahead. She just would eat and eat and eat. She really came back on milk - it was almost shocking how well she came back after seeing how rough she had been,” remembers Steve.

From a near death experience in August to a stroll around the ring at the Royal in November, Gorgeous made a ChampionCowmore,forGorgeouswhomTorontotoAmericaninthat,again,wasCanadianrecovery.tremendousTheUS-borderopenforcattleandwithareboundthenumberofvisitorstheshowin-manyofwereseeinginthefleshthefirsttime.OnceshewontheMatureclassandwastappedasGrandJersey.Shethencaptured one more Supreme Champion crown, beating out the Holstein, Thrulane James Rose EX97, in a battle of three-time Royal Grand “SheChampions.always had a lot of fans, but after her win in 2009, it seemed like so many more people outside of Jersey breeders came to appreciate her,” comments Steve. “She really was stunning - ahead of her timeand good cow people recognized that.”

COWSMOPOLITAN Late Summer 2022 » 25

t can be a winding road that eventually gets us to where we want to be in life, and that’s been true for Chet and Renee Baker of Hillside Homestead Farm in Albany, VT. Now living out their dream of owning and operating their own dairy farm, it took a number of years and many creative strategies to get there.

Building a Dream in Northern Vermont

Though their own breeding program is in relatively early days, their philosophy is pretty defined. “We breed cows to be functionally correct and hopefully last a long time.  We do enjoy showing, so we

They’re quick to credit the people that helped them on their journey. “I feel like there are so many mentors, that I can’t possibly mention them all. First and foremost my father, Dale Nadeau. I lost my dad last year, and miss his suggestions and ideas terribly. He taught me that the cows come first. He taught me to focus on the things that really matter, like quality feed, cow comfort, and cow health. He reminded me about profitability. It’s fun to have nice cows, but if they don’t help pay the bills, you might need to re-think if they should stay.  Another huge mentor for me was Dr. Cal Blessing at Vermont Technical College. He was by far the best teacher I’ve ever had. He made learning easy and made things really sink in. I learned so much about animal health and treatment from him, hoof trimming, breeding, cow comfort and animal husbandry,” praises Renee.

Chet and Renee handle most of the work on the farm, splitting up the chores pretty equally. Renee handles the milking, calf care, breeding and medical treatments, while Chet takes charge of the crops, feeding, heifer barn care and milking barn chores. A couple of very part-time helpers cover chores when the couple take cattle to a show or when they need extra help with haying. They have someone that milks every Sunday night so the couple can enjoy at least one sit down meal together each week, but aside from that, the Bakers are carrying their own load on the farm.

HILLSIDE HOMESTEAD FARM

It’s what might be considered a ‘classic’ Vermont dairy farm, purchased in December 2019. The Bakers milk 50 cows, mainly Registered Holsteins that carry their Grand-Hill prefix, but also have all the dairy breeds represented on the farm. They own almost 200 acres and rent another 170 acres, on which they grow their crops and forage. Much of the rest is utilized in their rotational grazing program in the summer, when the cows stay in during the day and go out on pasture at night.

Chet & Renee Baker of Hillside Homestead Farm.

Renee had really missed registered cows, and she talked to the farm owners about possibly moving on. They asked her to stay for one more year, and offered her either a cash bonus or ownership of two calves a month for her last year. When Chet and Renee moved on from Riverside Farm, they had 24 calves, which were the seedstock to start their own herd.

I

That comes naturally to both of them. Renee grew up on her family’s farm in

Prior to the job at Riverside Farm, Renee had earned degrees in dairy farm management at Vermont Technical College and Animal Science from the University of Vermont. She had worked at other establishments following her schooling, including Cowtown Holsteins in Derby, VT in the days when they showed Elletta Skybuck Lucy to Grand Champion honors at World Dairy Expo in 2007. That love of showing continues, and Renee still likes to get a string out to several local

and regional shows each year.

Holland, VT - nestled right next to the Quebec border. Her parents, Dale and Clara Nadeau, farmed for more than 40 years and raised a family of five while developing their Ned-Acres Holstein herd, and Renee cultivated her love of cows and agriculture there as a child. Chet grew up in Underhill, VT, in the Burlington area, near his grandparent’s farm where he spent time there alongside his cousins growing up. His dad is an IBA dealer/ distributor, so the family always had close roots to the dairy industry.

They met in 2010 while they were both working at a commercial dairy, Conant’s Riverside Farm in Richmond, VT. Once they started dating and when the relationship got serious, they started to dream about their future and their goals.

In classic self-reliant New England-style, the Bakers have diversified a bit with their operation. In 2021, they opened the doors to a small farm stand on their property offering raw milk, local cheeses, locally-produced dairy products, hand made soap from their milk, Amish baked goods, and more. In her spare time (!), Renee enjoys making barn quilts that are 100% hand made and painted that she also offers for sale.

do emphasize breeding high-type more on some particular cow families. We are still a pretty young farm as far as our own breeding goes, but we’ve had several young cows with our prefix go Very Good on their first classification. One in particular that we are excited about is Grand-Hill Isnt She Lovely, a Warrior granddaughter of Elmbridge FM Loveable-Red EX-94 4E. She is, to date, the highest scoring two-year-old for us at VG88,” notes Renee.

By Kathleen O’Keefe

When looking to add to a potential female to the herd, it won’t surprise you that they like the proven performance in a purebred pedigree. “We love good cow families, ones with great sires behind them, and females that have high scores.  We really don’t have specific criteria, but animals we look at need to have a good pedigree, good classifications, and most anything we buy now is a cow that is going to produce show offspring,” Renee

A young cow co-bred with Edmond Petit, born and raised at Hillside Homestead - Mapleside Tatoo Connie VG-86-CAN - was purchased by Ferme Jacobs last November and she went on to place 8th in the Milking Yearling class at the Canadian National Holstein Show. Another eyecatcher owned with Edmond is Intense Awesome Pam-Red-ET EX-90, who was 2nd senior 3-year-old at the Canadian National Red & White Show in 2021.

It took a lot of hard work, a lot of steps, and a lot of planning, including renting a farm for five years before they could buy their own piece of paradise, but Chet and Renee Baker prove that the dream to become successful dairy producers can still be done!

It’s a great group to build from for the Bakers. They are still building and improving the herd, but rarely walk away from the chance to merchandise and animal or two. Renee explains how they keep their herd in front of potential buyers.

“We do consign to sales - a lot of small sales for colleges or ag programs. We use

social media with results of cow shows. We just started doing a little bit of print advertising last year in magazines, and we’ve been showing since the start of our farming career - it definitely is a great way to show people your best cattle.”

themselves in the show ring. Desperle Regina Aftershock EX-94, owned with Tim and Sarah Putnam, was Reserve Grand Champion at the 2019 New England Summer. This year, her sister, Desperle Goldwyn Rosey VG-88, owned with Edmond Petit, also was named Reserve Grand Champion of the same show.

HOLSTEIN JUNIOR SHOW

This award recognizes New England Junior Holstein Exhibitors for their efforts and interest in all aspects of the Holstein industry. Recipients of this award have a high level of participation in junior programs, excel in herdsmanship, are knowledgeable of their cattle, have demonstrated leadership qualities, and have a sustained commitment to the industry.

She owned her first project calf, Country Ayr Comerica Candy, at the age of four. "Candy" was purchased at the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf sale in 2008 and Katelyn currently has the fourth generation of cows from that original purchase. She leased her first Holstein calf from Carrie and David Sears in 2017. In 2019 she was able to own her first Holstein, Whittier farms Monica-Red, from Todd Whittier. Katelyn and "Monica" made quite the pair and went on to win the Northeast Fall National Overall Champion Showman in 2019. "Monica" is now EX91 and has a bred and owned calf, Bittersweet Mystery-Red, that Katelyn is showing this year. "Mystery" was just Reserve Junior Champion at the 2022 MA State 4-H show. During COVID, Katelyn won overall showmanship during the Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn swing and was Reserve Overall Showman during the Jersey and Brown Swiss swing at the Northeast All Breeds Fall Show in 2020. Katelyn also won Overall Champion Showman at the Northeast Fall National Holstein show in 2021 prior to receiving the Lee Salonen Outstanding Junior award.

Lee Salonen has been a member of the New England States Holstein Association for over 50 years. He has rendered tireless service on the board for 33 years in nearly every leadership position including President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Finance Chair and Finance Chair for the 2005 National Holstein Convention hosted by the New England States Holstein Association. Lee is also a recipient of the New England Association’s prestigious Distinguished Service award. Providing opportunities for youth to grow within the industry has been the cornerstone of Lee’s leadership philosophy, a philosophy that continues even today.

Since she has received the award, Katelyn has decided to pursue a degree in AgriBusiness Management through Penn State World Campus. Katelyn currently works for Cowsmopolitan Inc. where she is given the opportunity to take photos, write articles, and create digital design work for breeders. Katelyn has had the ability to work for outstanding Holstien breeders that have had an influence on her both in and out of the barn. In 2019, Katelyn first worked for Brigeen Farms Inc. at the Northeast Fall National and got to work with Klussendorf winner, Steve Briggs. Steve has a wealth of knowledge and a want for juniors to succeed and learn. Katelyn’s largest Holstein influence has been Todd Whittier of Whittier Farms Holsteins. Todd has given Katelyn the opportunity to succeed in the show ring with animals he has given exceptional care to, as well as a well thought out breeding philosophy. She has worked with name cow families like Kyte Linda, Roxy, and Contender Tabby. Katelyn wants to continue to grow and develop her Holstein resume.

Callum was at the farm several years ago looking to purchase some commercial Brown Swiss from the Ouellettes, and as he was leaving he asked about the ‘blond’ heifer out in the pasture. Stephanie told him the springing heifer had been Ashlynn’s showmanship heifer the year before as a summer yearling, but now

history buff, and soon decided that the farm would be named Iroquois Acres in homage to the earlier residents of the Thatland.little

Seth & Stephanie Pope with their sons Rowdy & Remy and niece Ashlynn Foster.

With the expansion and growth over the decades, the family now has a milking herd of 600 cows - still mainly Holsteins, along with about 25 registered Brown Swiss, and a handful of Jerseys, Ayrshires, and Milking Shorthorns housed in a freestall barn. They farm about 2000 acres on which they raise all their own forage. They have a rolling herd average of 25,937M 4.0%F 3.2%P and the average age of the herd is 3-07. The Brown Swiss average 85 points in score and the BAA for the Holstein herd is 107.4 after a recent classification, their first for the Holsteins in over 35 years!

Ensuring the Future with Purebred Genetics

Farming in a bucolic setting overlooking Lake Champlain, the Ouellette family believes in the value of registered dairy cattle, and that belief is driving their future forward. They want their children and grandchildren to grow up on the farm, and that goal directs the current decisions they’re making for their Stephanieoperation.

Ouellette Pope loves seeing her kids flourish in the fresh air and freedom that defines a rural childhood, and feels lucky that her kids are having the same experience she did growing up.

“My grandfather emigrated from an area of Quebec north of Montreal where his family were vegetable farmers and raised sled dogs. There were too many sons to support there, so he headed south in search of a farm, found and purchased this place in 1958,” explains Stephanie. “He and my grandma along with my dad, Steven who was a year old at the time, moved in the next day.”

boy, Steven, grew up to be a real cow lover and he cultivated that passion in his children as well. The herd has always been predominantly Holstein, and in the 1970s was all registered before a barn fire tragically killed all but one cow. They rebuilt the barn and replaced the cattle with mainly grade Holsteins in order to get things rolling again.

If the Iroquois Acres prefix sounds familiar, it’s probably because you heard or saw the name Iroquois Acres Jong Cali EX-96-3E-CAN, who has had an impressive show career - All-American and All-Canadian Junior 3-Year-Old in 2018; All-American 4-Year-Old in 2019; and Reserve All-American Aged Cow and Reserve Senior Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2021. Owned by the Pacheco family from California, Cali has been a long-time resident at Lookout Holsteins & Jerseys in Canton de Hatley, Quebec, which is owned and operated by Callum McKinven and his family.

Steven and his wife, Sherry, purchased the farm from his parents in 1979, and kept improving the operation over the years including a conversion to a free-stall barn in the late 1980s and building a new milking parlor in the early 1990s. They added cow numbers in the early 2000s before selling about 200 head in 2005. That income allowed them to fix up the main barn and to purchase another farm. All of this while raising a family of three, all of whom developed their own love for the farm. In 2017, Stephanie, her husband Seth, and her brother, Aaron formed an LLC along with Steven and Sherry to transition to the next generation.

Callum is a long-time friend of the family and Stephanie credits him as being one of her mentors in the business. “When I was in high school, my dad and I would go to Canada on school breaks and ride around with Callum visiting herds up there - some of my fondest memories! He is so knowledgeable and taught me so much on what to look for when buying an animal,” notes Stephanie. “My niece, Ashlynn, who also works on the farm with us, has been helping them at some shows, so the next generations are building a relationship too.”

Harmel and Lila Ouellette were the new owners of 260 acres and 40 milk cows near Bridport, Vermont, and they immediately became dairy farmers. The farm is located near a narrow point of Lake Champlain where the crossing from the east to the west side is one of the easiest along the 125-mile stretch of the massive lake. The Native American trails to this point were still evident as were the remnants of native long house settlements in the woods on the farm. Lila Ouellette was a

IROQUOIS ACRES

With IVF calves on the way, Stephanie hopes to market more animals in the future. They’ve always consigned a few to local sales, and sold cattle privately, but they’re looking to make sale of genetic stock more of a profit line for the farm. “Due to our location near the lake and the limits of our milk supply management system, we’re pretty much locked in at about 600 cows. At one time, we thought we might expand to 1,000 cows, but now we’re working with advisors to make sure we can cash flow 600 cows for the whole family. Our future is our kids and we want to ensure they have a chance to operate this farm if they want. Everything we choose to do has an economic impact on the farm, so we have to make smart decisions,” she explains.

Stephanie credits her father as the reason the Swiss were in their herd to begin with. Her brother Aaron wanted a Brown Swiss calf to show instead of a Holstein, so in 1990, they bought their first one at a club sale. That calf was Junior Champion at every show around for Aaron, so in the years to come, they bought more calves for Stephanie and her sister, Nicky. “My father was the biggest champion for us as far as anything we wanted to do with cows and the farm. My niece Ashlynn wanted a Milking Shorthorn, so he made sure she got one. He’s always been the person I look up to the most. He instilled a love for cattle in all of us. When we expanded, I always went with him to buy cattle, and he encouraged that - we traveled to Quebec, PEI, all over the place,” Stephanie remembers.

They’ve purchased other Holsteins from good herds in the region including Woodmansees, Carpenters, and Liddleholme. Stephanie credits New York Holstein breeder Jason Lloyd for helping them in the process. “Jason gets a lot of calls from me! He is a wealth of information and is always willing to help out. He boards some animals for us as well, and I really trust his advice.”

Stephanie’s sister, Nicky Foster, studied at the Vermont Institute of Artisan Cheese and then started Bridport Creamery after a number of years of managing the Iroquois Acres herd. She produces a variety of flavored cheese curds, and a creamy, mildly nutty cheese they call Swisserella. The creamery maintains a small farm stand at Iroquois Acres, where customers can make the connection between the cows in the barn and the cheese on the shelves. She also markets her products in a number of small and specialty stores in Vermont and Massachusetts.

was to calve as a junior 2-year-old. The deal was struck and Cali calved with a heifer calf - Iroquois Acres Total Candy, now EX-93-CAN - and soon they made the move to Quebec. Earlier this year, Candy was the winning 5-year-old and Grand Champion at the New York Spring Brown Swiss Show, so the Pachecos have a powerful dam & daughter pair for 2022.

Iroquois Acres C Tearin, a Carter daughter that had been nominated All-American Fall Calf in 2019 sold for $12,250 last year in the National Convention Sale as a senior 2-year-old prospect. She is a potential seventh generation Excellent from the famous Timberline Jetway Toni family, and her pedigree represents what the Ouellettes look for when buying cattle. “Cow families, cow families, cow

With four generations active on the farm, one thing is clear. This family loves cows and loves farming, and each generation has nurtured that love in the next. The future for this farm on the lake looks to be filled with the passionate Ouellette, Foster, and Pope kids carrying on the family business.

One of those decisions is to continue milking mainly Holsteins, primarily for their superior milk production as young cows. They’ll keep working with their key Brown Swiss cow families, especially now that Seth & Stephanie’s sons, Rowdy (9) and Remy (7) are starting their 4-H and junior careers. “We want to give them the opportunity to have some fun and a choice if they want to show Brown Swiss or Holsteins or another breed,” she says.

With that in mind, the family has purchased a number of Holstein flush cows with powerful pedigrees in the past couple of years. IVF embryos from these cows will be implanted in herd recipients with the goal of milking more Registered Holsteins and improving the overall genetics. These cows include OCD Defiant Lustrous-Red EX-92 who goes back to Tora Triple Threat Lulu EX-96; Santschi Windbrook Valencia EX-91-CAN, a 10th generation VG or EX cow and the dam of Lookout Sid Voodoo EX-94; and Pierstein Damion Lindsay EX-94. Stephanie likes the fact that the work is already ‘done’ on these cows - they’re scored and picturedso those boxes are ticked if they decide to merchandise any of the offspring.

King Pietertje Ormsby Piebe “KPOP” was born July 18, 1915 and was closely inbred to Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes the result of mating his sire Sir Korndyke Bess whose dam was a Mercedes to Queen Piebe Mercedes a daughter of Mercedes. He was

Johanna Rag Apple Pabst (JRAP) was born on January 24, 1921. He was a son of Pabst Korndyke Star and out of a two-year old named Princess Johanna Rag Apple Pontiac. He was bred by Herbert Lepien and his father-in-law Philip Linker of Hartford, Wisconisn. JRAP was sold to fellow Hartford dairyman, Joseph Piek, who used him on his herd. JRAP was shown extensively by Joe Piek and was All-American 2-Year-Old in 1923, All-American 3-Year-Old in 1924 and All-American Aged Bull in 1925. Later, under new ownership, he won his 4th All-American and was twice Reserve AllAmerican Aged Bull. In the spring of 1926 Joe Piek decided to sell JRAP in Clark’s Holstein Classic, a prominent sale. He was purchased by T. B. Macaulay of Montreal, a wealthy insurance magnate and gentleman farmer who implemented the concepts of Mendelian genetics at Mount Victoria Farm (Montvic) in Hudson Heights, Quebec. It was here where the prepotent bull Johanna Rag Apple Pabst and his offspring were bred to the foundation cows that he had purchased in Ontario from the Posch and Abbekerk families for four generations. The Montvic genetics were dispersed at the Mount Victoria Sale on June 29, 1942 and had the highest average ever at that time of $1925.73 on 68 head. The influence of the genetics developed by Macaulay continued on through Montvic Rag Apple Sovereign and his son A B C Reflection Sovereign. JRAP sired the Reserve All-American Get of Sire in 1933 and All-American get in 1935 and 1936.

100 YEARS OF SHOW RING TYPE BULLS

Man-O-War who was named after the Horse of the Century, was born February 3, 1923 on the farm of his breeder O. J. Grover, Glyndon, Minnesota. His pedigree combines the blood of three of the best sons of Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes, all of them bred by E. C. Schroeder, Moorhead, Minnesota. Those three sons were Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes 14th, Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes 22nd and Sir Pietertje Ormsby Mercedes 37th. He sired the All-American Get of Sire four times, 1931-32-33-34 and the All-Time AllAmerican Get, 1933. Man-O-War spent the first seven years of his life in service at Walter and Norman Schmidt, Empire Stock Farms, St. Peter, Minnesota. He was used in the Schmidt herd and by several other herds in the area. Man-O-War did a good job and sired many daughters who were well-structured, with beautiful udders and were good milk producers. In 1930, E. H. Maytag of Maytag Dairy Farms, Newton, Iowa purchased Man-O-War and one of his daughters for $2700. Man-O-War, who weighed 2700 pounds was injured during shipment and when he didn’t recover was put out of his misery.

The 1969 World Dairy Expo Holstein Show was filled with outstanding daughters of Osborndale Ivanhoe.

The Holstein All-American Selections were started in 1922 by W. S. Moscrip, the breeder of North Star Holsteins in Minnesota. Moscrip made the selections the first year of the contest as he had judged the 1922 National, the Pacific International, Eastern States and Wisconsin State Fair. The winners were designated All-Americans similar to the top college football players of the day. The All-American contest was so popular that it was continued in 1923 with selections being made by a panel consisting of judges who had judged the National, Waterloo, the Pacific International and Eastern States. Maurice Prescott of the Holstein-Friesian World oversaw the contest for many years.

By Doug Urban

2022 is a banner year for show ring enthusiasts as it is the 100th Anniversary of the Holstein All-American contest. The contest is now sponsored and administered by Cowsmopolitan magazine. Thousands of cows, bulls and heifers have competed against each other for the past century as a way of measuring the phenotypic progress of the breeding programs of the breeders and the transmitting ability of the bulls that they used. Many believe that sire selection is an important factor in determining the type of the resulting offspring of a mating. Here is Part I of 3 parts exploring the most significant show ring type bulls of the last 100 years:

Maytag Farms purchased seven Man-OWar daughters the following year and purchased 28 others in the following years. The Schmidts also marketed cattle all over the United States and sold herd sires to the finest herds. This came to an end when the Executive Committee of the nondescriptofnotexpungedtheirtheregistrationsirregularitiesAssociationHolstein-Friesianfoundintheofsomeofbulls.ThreebullshadregistrycertificatesastheywerereallyoffspringMan-O-War,butbullcalves

that had been purchased from neighbors. The Man-O-War scandal stained his name and cast doubt on whether an animal was really a Man-O-War descendant. It was feared that the reputation of the Maytag herd would be affected, but the goodwill that they had built up over the years and good reputation allowed them to weather the storm. The untimely death of Man-OWar and the scandal tarnished his name, but an inbred son Man-O-War Combine, born in 1936 had six crosses to Man-O-War and proved to be a fine bull.

Governor of Carnation was born May 21, 1930 as the result of mating the bull North Star Joe Homestead to a daughter of Sir Inka May. North Star Joe Homestead had been All-American Aged Bull in 1924 for Baltz Hoesly, Monticello, Wisconsin and was

and sired three All-American Gets of Sire, 1924-25-26 - the first bull to do so. From 1919-1927, KPOP descendants won 680 first prizes and 240 championships. The sixtime All-American Triune Papoose Piebe as a cow and heifer had double KPOP as the grandsire. King Pietertje Ormsby Piebe is also the sire of the bull Marathon Bess Burke who appears three times in the pedigree of the influential Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad.

Some of the many WABL descendants who garnered All-American honors include Rocky Hill Mont Burke Dusty Jo EX-95 GMD, 1947-50-51-52; Pabst Sir Roburke Rag Apple EX-GM, 1947; Pabst Roamer Dean Walker Lad EX-GM, 1949; La Princess Margaret

Furthermore, a major influence of Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad continues because of descendants Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation and his many sons including Hanoverhill Starbuck and Hilltopper Warden and grandsons Carnation Counselor and Conant-Acres JY Broker.

A B C Reflection Sovereign EX (ABC) is considered Canada’s most important Holstein sire since Johanna Rag Apple Pabst and King Toitilla Acme, to whom he traces. He also had a strong influence in the United States and on the All-American contest. He was born December 3, 1946 on the A. B. C. Farms of his breeder Armstrong Breeders Corporation, Brampton, Ontario. His sire, Montvic Rag Apple Sovereign EX, was mated to his dam, A B C Inka May EX, the All-Canadian 4-Year-Old in 1947.

Osborndale Ivanhoe EX-GM daughters made a fine showing at the 1969 Central National Holstein Show in Madison. Five of the first eight in the Aged Cow class were daughters of Osborndale Ivanhoe and another was a granddaughter. The winning Aged Cow Miss Ivanhoe Scranton EX-94 was Grand Champion and, second to her, Marilyn Ivanhoe Ema EX-94 was Reserve Grand Champion. They were subsequently voted as All-American and Reserve AllAmerican that year. The Ivanhoe Get of Sire claimed first place and was named AllOsborndaleAmerican.

bought by Carnation as he had done a good job in the Hoesly herd. A year later, North Star Joe Homestead was the leading Honor List sire of 1930 and the dam of Governor of Carnation, Carnation Homestead Daisy Madcap became the world’s butterfat champion with a record of 1413 lbs. of fat from 34,553 lbs. milk, 4.1 % on 4X milking.

Governor of Carnation was the sire of the 1939 and 1940 All-American Get of Sire and his son Carnation Governor Imperial (EXGM) was All-American Bull Calf, 1934 and All-American Aged Bull in 1938 and 1939.

Pabst EX-GMD, 1949-50; Gray View B D Skyanne EX-96 GMD, 1954-55-56; Ormsby Burke Pontiac Mose EX-92 GM, 1955; Lavacres Della Dusty Jo EX-92, 1955-56-57; Plain View Inga EX-95, 1956; Mooseheart Pioneer EX-GM, 1958-59; and Gray View Crisscross EX-96, 1962.

Ivanhoe was born April 26, 1952 and was the result of mating Osborndale Sir Ty Vic to Quality Fobes Abbekerk Gay EX-91 GMD. He was bred by Mrs. Waldo Kellogg, Osborndale Farm, Derby, Connecticut. It has been said that he was born at the right time as the breed was becoming shortlegged and lacking dairyness because of the heavy influence of the Burke bloodline, developed at Pabst Farms through the use of Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad, his sons Roamer and Regal, and their sons and grandsons. Breeders were looking for something new and Ivanhoe sired the traits they needed—stature, length, tight udders and improved milk production.

Next time: The influential show ring type

Woodbourne Inka Reflector and his son Ideal Fury Reflector who sire five AllAmerican Gets, the same number as his paternal grandsire ABC. ABC was also the sire of Romandale Cora-Twin EX who was Reserve All-American Aged cow in 1967.

Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad (WABL) was born in 1934 at the Wisconsin State Reformatory, Green Bay, Wisconsin; proven at Utah State Industrial School, Ogden, Utah and later acquired by Pabst Farms, Oconomowoc, WI. He carried three crosses to Marathon Bess Burke and was sired by Wisconsin Admiral Burke and out of Bell Farm Rosalind who was born in Pennsylvania, sold to a farm in Michigan, sold to an Illinois farm and ended up at the Wisconsin State Reformatory at seven years of age. The influence of WABL is overwhelming. There isn’t a Holstein today that doesn’t carry some Burke blood. Artificial breeding institutions marketed semen on numerous sons, grandsons and descendants. He had two All-American Gets, 1947-48 and Reserve All-American, 1950. His sons continued the All-American gets with Pabst Regal, (1949 and 1951); Pabst Roamer (1950 and Reserve in 1949 and 1951); and Pabst Comet (Reserve in 1953). The Roamer and Regal gets featured attractive dairy cattle—black, strong, square-rumped, good-uddered with the appearance and dairy quality known as the “Pabst look”.

Other noteworthy All-American Ivanhoes include Collins-Crest Ivanhoe Triune J EX96, 1963 and Reserve 1964-66; Cochran Ivanhoe Shirley EX-94 GMD, Reserve 3-YearOld 1966; Alnat Toitilla Ivanhoe Ginger EX93, Aged Cow 1970. Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation EX-96 GM the most influential bull of the Holstein breed was out of Round Oak Ivanhoe Eve EX-94 GMD, an Ivanhoe

The Rosafe herd was established in 1948 when A. B. C. Farms was purchased by Hector I. Astengo, a native of Argentina who had emigrated to Canada. The purchase included A B C Reflection Sovereign himself and his many achievements occurred in the following years until the Rosafe Dispersal was held on May 27, 1958. He was AllCanadian as a 2-Year-Old, 3-Year-Old and Aged Bull in 1949-50-52 and sired AllAmerican Gets of Sire five times and reserve twice; sired the All-Time All-American Get, 1962; and produced six individual AllAmericans. Also, ABC granddaughters and grandsons were Reserve All-American 37 times. His son Rosafe Magician sired the All-American Gets of Sire, 1963-94-65 and Rosafe Citation R sired both the All-American Get and Reserve in 1966. Both bulls were out of the great brood cow Glenvue Nettie Jemima EX. Another ABC son, Romandale Reflection Marquis would also have a strong influence in the show ring with 43 influenceABC1962-63.AgedAll-AmericanwasMarquisandAll-AmericansReserve.himselfReserveBull,Othersonswithinclude

Making the Headlines

HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION USA DISTINGUISHED YOUNG BREEDER

near Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Meadow Brook Farms milks around 425 cows, three times a day, in a double-nine parallel parlor. The rolling herd average is just over 30,000 pounds of milk, with 1,230 pounds of fat and 927 pounds of protein. They are currently at 4.1% fat and 3.1% protein.

COWSMOPOLITAN Late Summer 2022 » 53

In addition to their show ring success, their herd ranks at the top of the breed for production. In 2021, their herd had a lactation average of 18,238 lbs. milk, 928 lbs. fat, and 683 lbs. protein on 60 lactations. The herd has ranked as high as fifth for protein and eighth for fat among herds with 40-70 lactations in the past.

The Cores have been active with the Kentucky Jersey Cattle Club and the Kentucky National Show and Sale. Alta Mae served on the Kentucky Fair Council and retired from the Kentucky Department of Revenue, in 2008, after 30 years of service. The Cores are both active cattle judges, having worked cattle shows in the United States and internationally. Alta Mae has served as a judge in Argentina, Brazil, Coasts Rica, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, as well as at the Royal Agricultural Fain in Toronto, Canada, and International Dairy Week, Australia. The couple have both won the Klussendorf Trophy, an award given for ability, character, friendliness and outstanding showmanship at the World Dairy Expo.

Another family of impact is the “Molly” cow family, which began with KJF Responses Molly, Excellent-91. Her daughter, KCJF Sambo Molly, Excellent-94%, was Intermediate Champion of The All American Jersey Show in 2006 and topped the National Jersey Jug Futurity two years later. She has two records over 22,000 lbs. milk. Her sons, KCJF Mollys Ren Motion and KCJF One in a Million, have sired numerous blue-ribbon winners for the Cores and other breeders. Her grandson, KCJF Hired Magician, is in the Showcase Selections

Since 1980, Jeff and Alta Mae Core have been breeding awardwinning Jerseys. They have bred 238 cows appraised Excellent-90% or higher. The highest being, KCJF Regency Treasure, Excellent-97%, just one of seven in breed history to receive this honor. “Treasure” is sired by both a Keightley-Core bred dam and sire, Renaissance Kims

Kappelman has taken on leadership roles in his local Manitowoc County Holstein Association, serving on the board for six years. He’s also a graduate of Class 10 of the Holstein Foundation’s Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI). As he looks ahead, Kappelman plans to continue his involvement in the dairy industry, both on and off the farm.

For the 2022 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder, returning home to farm was always a clear choice. Now, 30-year-old Mitch Kappelman manages his family’s dairy, Meadow Brook Farms. Because of his enthusiasm for dairy farming and the Registered Holstein® cow, Holstein Association USA is proud to honor Kappelman with the 2022 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder Locatedaward.

Jerseys have been named Premier Breeder seven times and Premier Exhibitor twice at the National All-American Jersey Show. Additionally, they have bred one national champion, have exhibited the national champion three times, exhibited the Genomic Jersey Performance Grand Champion in 2020 and 2021, bred three National Jersey Jug Futurity winners, and won the 2021 Leading Lifetime Production Award.

performers include a sprinkling of KCJF sires on both the top and bottom sides of the pedigree. Among the cows who can be found in the lineage of much of the herd today is the early influencer, K.J.F. Amandas Mercury Mandy, Excellent-93%. Her son, Mandys Patrick Rex, born in May 1987, was the first bull bred and sampled by the Cores. He has 137 daughters in his proof, including Rexs Patrick Kim, Excellent-94%, an All American honoree with nine complete lactations, and the dam of four-time All American Junior Show Champion, KJF Renaissance Lacy {6}, Excellent-96%.

AMERICAN JERSEY CATTLE ASSOCIATION MASTER BREEDER

Through the years, Kappelman’s passion for agriculture was ignited as he competed in shows and activities like Dairy Bowl through the National Junior Holstein Association. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated with a degree in dairy science in 2013.

“To win this award means that I’m on the right track,” he says. “It means I’m doing good things, but that doesn’t mean I want to stop. I want to keep going, I want to do more, I want to be better. And I’m excited for where that future is going to lead.”

Jeff and Alta Mae Core, Salvisa, Ky., received the Master Breeder Award given by the American Jersey Cattle Association in ceremonies June 25, 2022, during the association’s 154th Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

The Master Breeder Award is presented to an AJCA member, family, partnership or corporation that has bred outstanding animals for many years and thereby made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Jersey breed in the United States.

After working as a herd analyst for a couple of years, Kappelman followed his heart back home to the farm. “I loved the genetics side of things and working with other farmers, but there’s nothing like working with your own cows,” he says.

Today, Kappelman is involved in all of the day-to-day activities at Meadow Brook Farms, where his biggest priorities are managing employees and cow health. He is always striving for new genetic goals with his Registered Holsteins, while remaining focused on keeping cows healthy and comfortable.
