nother World Dairy Expo has come and gone, and the 2022 edition will go down as one for the history books! While it was so good being back on the grounds in 2021 after the show cancellation in 2020, last year it felt like people were still a bit unsure about the gathering. The attendance numbers were down and it seemed like we were tiptoeing our way back to ‘normal’. Well, this year, it was back! The 2,663 head of cattle on the grounds was the most in recent history, edging out the 2,657 housed in Madison in 2008.
Once again, we were amazed by the quality of the breed shows. They really do keep getting better every year. When you think back to the early days of the Red & White Show or the Junior Holstein Show for example, the improvement made in the past couple of decades is astounding. I know I say it again and again, but if you could take home the bottom third of each class from any of the breed shows, you’d have quite a herd to brag about. More animals leave the ring without a medal than with one, but the optimism and
pride of show people keeps everyone coming back the next year.
But let’s talk about the cows that climb to the highest pinnacle - the ones that get named a World Dairy Expo Champion. I was idly watching the US Open tennis tournament earlier this fall and saw the above Billie Jean King quote printed on the stadium wall. ‘Pressure is a privilege.’
It’s so true. Most of the Grand Champions at Madison were reigning champions or had been Reserve Grand or Intermediate Champion last year. It’s no secret who the favorites are, and with that comes the pressure for the owners and caretakers of these tremendous, remarkable cows. Footloose, Malt, Eloise, Ruthless, Faye - all had stood in the middle of the Expo ring in 2021.
Oakfield Solom Footloose won many, many fans last year when she was runnerup to Shakira in the Holstein Show. Her name was one of the first to come up in conversations this summer about who was ‘the cow’ for Madison this year. That put a lot of pressure on her co-owners Mike & Julie Duckett, who look after Footloose. Not only were they trying to do the best job for her, but also for their partners, Tim & Sharyn Abbott and Vierra Dairy. But, they’re no strangers to the pressure - they had been down this path before with Footloose’s granddam, Harvue Roy Frosty, who was a 2-time Supreme Champion at WDE.
Pressure is a privilege. It’s really an interesting sentence when you take it in. It means that people believe in you. It means that you expect more of yourself than to be average. It helps you to rise to the next
level. It gives you the opportunity to do something extraordinary.
We all love the Cinderella story and the unexpected winner - it keeps us all dreaming that it can happen for us one day. But, here’s to the people and crews that look after the odds-on favorites, the ones everyone is betting on. If you lose, all of your decisions are picked apart, but when you win, you create something special - a legacy, maybe even a legend. Think of Snickerdoodle, Charity, Tom Dee, and Martha - all names etched in our collective show memory banks because the cows and their people answered the bell time and time again.
Those caretakers hold themselves to a high standard that allows their cows to achieve their greatest potential. There are some lessons in there for all of us - building success one day at a time, one seemingly mundane chore at a time. But when you do the little things exceptionally well, the big goals start to seem possible, and indeed, they are.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at Madison to say hello! It’s our favorite week of the year to connect and engage with our readers, subscriber and advertisers - old and new! The 2022 shows are over, but we’re now in another exciting part of the year: All-American contest time! The entries and photos have been pouring in and the contests look to be bangers once again this year! Our AllAmerican Nomination Announcement Celebration will be held in Nashville on December 4th - plan to join us or tune in to the livestream!
As always, thank you to the people reading this and thank you for your passion for the purebred dairy cow - we love her too and you make this publication possible!!

‘Pressure is a privilege - it only comes to those who earn it.’ BILLIE JEAN KING
Astroll down the aisle at Lost Elm Jerseys in Berlin, Wisconsin reveals a beautiful, uniform 50-cow herd with great udders and lots of dairy strength. It’s a herd that displays the breeder’s ‘touch’ - one that you think must have been developed for years and years. And while it’s true that registered cattle with deep pedigrees have stood in these stalls for decades, it’s only been the Jerseys’ turn for the past twelve years!
Lost Elm Farm has been the home to four different breeds since Jerry and Phyllis Luttropp took the reins of the property purchased from Jerry’s dad in 1972, when Jerry returned from a second tour of Vietnam. Ayrshires were the first to call this classic, pretty Wisconsin farm home, but were soon ousted by Registered Holsteins. Phyllis grew up with Holsteins in nearby Waupaca with her family’s Budary herd, and six cows with that prefix laid the early foundation for Holsteins at Lost-Elm.
Jerry and Phyllis always had the goal to merchandise cattle and genetics, and with an eye to that, they were early adopters of embryo transfer technology in the 1980s. Embryo transfer allowed them to export embryos, and resulting ET calves helped grow the genetic progress of the herd. There were several cows in the herd that ranked well on the Holstein index system at the time, and flushing those cows led to numerous bull in AI carrying the LostElm Prefix. Lost-Elm Guardian was the #1
bull in the breed for pounds of fat in 1989. In total, the Luttropps put 29 Holstein bulls into AI.
In addition to growing their herd, Jerry and Phyllis were also raising their children: Jeff (49), Jason (48), and Jodi (44). The Luttropp kids were getting their feet wet in the show ring, and really starting to love it. Jerry made some purchases in subsequent years to feed that passion. Jeff had plenty of local success with Wes-Lyn Tribesman Stephany EX-93, who was Grand Champion at their WI District 7 Show. Daughter Jodi had an eye for a different color, and because of her, the first Brown Swiss calf - Sun-Made Jub Startle, from the famous Kilravock Snow Storm family - was her Christmas present in 1992.
That calf started a trend at the farm, as in 1993, Jerry purchased Alpine-Hills Mary May and R&S Jubilations Rosy on the Kentucky National Brown Swiss Sale and that fall nodded the final bid at the World Premier Sale for VB Sensat X Cruella Rose. “Those were the years that saw Lyndale Convincer Elaine and Hoosier Knoll Jade Monay be Supreme Champions at Expo, and we really admired those cows,” remembers Jerry. That first purchase, Startle, may not have been a winning show heifer, but she developed into an EX-93 3E cow with records over 36,000M.
Jubilations Rosy was Junior Champion of the Junior Show at Madison in 1993 for Jason, and Cruella Rose calved in with a beautiful udder for Jodi. She won her class and was Grand Champion of the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo on her way to being named All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 1994. The Holsteins had been cut back in numbers in the herd by that time, and the Brown Swiss population kept growing. “Honestly, it just kind of exploded,” says Jason, who went to the Farm and Industry Short Course at UWMadison before returning home to the farm. “We kept flushing the good Swiss cows and sold embryos, but always kept some as well.”
Another purchase in those years was Alpine-Vue Dotson Posy-TW, who eventually scored EX-90 2E. Her 4.1% protein test was eye-catching to say the least, and the family thought she was a
Jerry, Phyllis & Jason Luttrop of Lost Elm Jerseys.good investment to market from. They exported embryos worldwide from her, and put four sons in AI, namely Lost-Elm President-ET at New Generation Genetics. A well-known udder improver, President has 6,200 daughter recorded worldwide and was a notable sire of sons including Sun-Made Vigor-ET, one of the most popular Brown Swiss bulls of all time.
With numerous All-American nominations and National Bellringers from the herd, the flushing continued and the herd grew. They added stalls in the barn and now could milk over 100 cows. They also kept purchasing select individuals to add new blood to the herd. Phyllis notes that this was their standard philosophy. “When we changed breeds, we looked to purchase from those elite cow families that were already proven successful. So much of the work is already done for you when you buy from those prominent families.” Another astute purchase was Top-Acres PR Popsy EX-90, who made a national milk, fat and protein record at 4-05 365d 53,430M 2588F 1855P and was honored as the National record holder for all age groups in milk, fat and protein, and proved their herd was more than just show cows.
In 2002, with the popularity of President and with their show ring success, the time was right for a herd dispersal. The sale was record setting at the time as the highest averaging herd dispersal as 103 head averaged $4,608. With embryos in the tank and some money in the bank, they went right back to buying from the best Brown Swiss cow families to rebuild the herd. More production leaders, bull mothers and show winners followed before they had their final Brown Swiss dispersal in
2010, when Jason was preparing to take over the herd and management of the farm. Another successful sale averaging over $4,000 on 117 head and cattle sold to 12 states, Mexico and Canada was the final chapter of Brown Swiss at Lost-Elm.
Jason owned his first Jersey in 1999Valhalla Bonus Lulu, the All-American Spring Yearling that year - and had come to hold the breed in high regard. The tie-stalls in their barn stayed the same size while the Holstein and Brown Swiss cows were getting bigger. It was either remodel the whole barn or make the switch to Jerseys, and that’s what Jason did. He hoped to build an elite herd of Jerseys the same way his parents had with the Holsteins and Brown Swiss.
By 2015, the Lost-Elm heifers walked on
PHYLLIS LUTTROPan undefeated fall calf and won the Junior Champion title at every show she went to: the Wisconsin State Show, International Jersey Show, and the All-American Jersey Show and was the 2016 All-American Fall Calf.
When you see the Lost-Elm prefix, you may very well think ‘Tequila’. Petunia put the herd on the map in the Jersey breed, and the Luttropp’s enthusiasm for Tequila has never waned. Most Jersey breeders have a strong opinion about Tequila - love him or hate him, but Jason and Jerry are firmly in the first camp. “He’s the best bull we’ve ever used - we’ve bred 27 Excellent Tequila daughters,” notes Jason. Jerry thinks some of their success with him is because they went against the common advice when using him. “You had to use him on some strength. If you used him
“
When we changed breeds, we looked to purchase from those elite cow families that were already proven successful. So much of the work is already done for you when you buy from those prominent families.”Lost Elm exhibited the winning Junior Best Three Females at the International Jersey Show in 2016, anchored by Lost-Elm Tequila Petunia, the winning fall calf and Junior Champion of the show.
Their breeding philosophy is to strive for high type and high components. Jason likes to alternate strength to dairyness and dairyness to strength in subsequent generations. Before Tequila, Forest Glen Avery Action left a number of good brood cows, and after the big Tequila wave, Chilli Action Colton (an Action son) has been the next sire that they’ve really appreciated in the herd. Current service sires and sires of their favorite calves on the ground include Ferdinand, VIP, Downtown Brown, Kid Rock, and Chocolatier.
That sire list indicates that showing remains a priority for the family. They typically take a string to the Wisconsin Spring Show, Wisconsin State Show as well as individuals to World Dairy Expo and the All-American Jersey Show. They’ve won the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners at both the Spring and State Shows and typically go home with a champion banner or two as well.
Their thoughtful approach to matings has resulted in 119 homebred Excellent cows since 2010. Even more impressively, of that number, 11 have been scored EX-94, and two at EX-95. Since the Brown Swiss days, they had a reduction sale in 2018 and lowered the milking herd numbers to about 50-60 cows. Their September 2022 rolling herd average was 20,711M 5.0% 1026F 3.8% 790P on 56 cows. After their August 2022 classification, the herd breakdown was 42 EX and 17 VG with none lower.
With that decision to reduce herd size, they knew they had to market excess animals and merchandise genetics to make it work. They use sexed semen exclusively with the plan to sell surplus females. “A herd this size can’t stay in business unless you’re marketing,” emphasizes Jerry. “We’ve sold a lot through the Great Northern through the
years - probably close to 1,000 head. We sell 20 to 30 young cows every year, which is pretty good for a herd our size. We try to sell heifers that will be good additions to someone else’s herd, and we’re now starting to see a premium when we put them through the sale ring.”
They’re also doing a fair bit of flushing again. “We had stopped flushing for awhile when it seemed like genomics was running the market, but now we’ve got some cows in the barn that deserve to be flushed,” says Jason. The current queen of the barn is Hi-Poits Concept Spunky Morgan {6} who scored EX-96% in January 2022. Jason purchased her from the Minnesota Spring Special Sale in 2018, and in 2019 she was the Grand Champion at the Wisconsin Spring Show. Due in December to VIP, Morgan will have had eight calves in eight years, but they’ve had great IVF results with her and she has calves coming by Joel and Kid Rock.
Two more powerful matriarchs in the stalls that scored EX-95% in August include LostElm Topeka Trisha, who was the winning aged cow and Champion Bred & Owned at the 2022 Wisconsin Spring Show, and Charlyn Tequila Eclipse, who is owned with Kyle Natzke. The Natzkes have been long-time family friends and occasional partners in some Jerseys. One of those was River Valley Citation Lovely EX-90%, a former #1 GPTAT cow of the breed. Her daughter, Lost-Brooke Torpedo Love Bug, is EX-93% and one of the highest GJUI cows in the breed at +22.1 GJUI. Love Bug’s brother, Lost-Brooke Lonestar, is currently marketed by ABS.
And while the stylish show cows and fancy uddered young cows catch your eye, Jason Luttropp says two of his herd favorites are a pair of 12-year-old cows: Lost-Elm Action Erotica and Lost-Elm Action Millie. Both sired by Action and both scored EX-92%,
they both have produced over 230,000M lifetime. Millie is out of Underground Imperial Mayme-ET EX-92, who Jerry says “may be the best brood cow that’s ever been here.” That checks out as Mayme has five other Excellent daughters ranging from 90 to 94 points.
It’s mainly a family-run operation at LostElm. Jason handles most of the day-to-day chores, while Jerry and Phyllis still pitch in where they can. Miranda Ewald grew up near Lost-Elm and has been full-time help with milking and other chores for over four years. Jason’s brother Jeff, who works as an agronomist, lives nearby. His daughter Hazil is a sophomore in high school and helps out when Miranda is off the schedule. Both Miranda and Hazil enjoy showing, so there is still plenty of incentive to put the fancy heifers on a program in the spring. Jason’s sister, Jodi works as an Executive Director at the Holstein Association, but comes home as often as she can to help the crew during the show season.
With a herd as good as this, there’s always something to be excited about. Jason points out a milking winter yearling by Presto out of River Valley Citation Lovely that looks very promising. Also on the list of Lost-Elm cows you’ll hear more about is Lost-Elm Tequila Pixie EX-91%, a second calf full sister to the 2016 WDE Junior Champion, Petunia.
The Luttropps have a deep appreciation for every breed that has stood in the stalls of this traditional Wisconsin barn, but don’t look for the featured breed to change again in the future. Jason loves the Jersey breed for the low-maintenance, efficient cows that breed true. When asked if he’d bring in a ‘cow of a different color’, he just smiles, shakes his head, and proclaims ‘It’s Jerseys for life!’
By Kathleen O’KeefeThe return to Madison was bigger and better than ever in 2022! The dairy cattle shows set a new record for the number of animals housed during the event with 2,663 head on the grounds competing in breed shows and selling at auction during the week (beating the previous record of 2,657 set in 2008). The number of exhibitors was up from last year as well, with 1,871 representing 36 US states and 5 Canadian provinces.
There were a few schedule changes to the show this year and the trade show contracted from five days to four, but attendance at the event climbed over 54,000 with 1,375 international guests making the trip. With greater numbers, the breed shows stretched from dawn until after dark every day, but the Expo staff worked diligently to keep things moving and carved out extra square footage in the ring by taking out the ringside rail and reducing the space for the floor-to-ceiling display at end of the arena.
The culmination of the week is always the naming of the World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion and in 2022, it was the Grand Champion Holstein - Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET EX-96, exhibited by Duckett Holsteins, Vierra Dairy, and Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Rudolph, WI. Footloose was the Reserve Grand Champion in the Holstein show last year to Erbacres Snapple Shakira, also named Supreme, now making it two in a row for the black & white breed. All-American as a Junior 3-Year-Old and as a 4-Year-Old, Footloose looks to take another year end title as a 5-Year-Old in 2022. Her win at the show helped Oakfield Corners Dairy secure the Premier Breeder banner for the show, while Jim Butler of Chebanse, IL took home the Premier Exhibitor honor.
A cow that was the talk of the grounds all week captured Reserve Grand Champion honors for judge Pierre Boulet in the Holstein Show. Blondin Rd Unstopabull Maple-Red VG-88 bypassed the International Red &
White Show and showed with the black & whites on Friday where she won the Senior 3-Year-Old class and the Intermediate Champion crown on the way to Reserve Grand for her owners R&F Livestock, William Schilling, Kevin Doeberiener, and Lindsay Bowen of West Salem, OH. She made plenty of fans last year winning the Senior 2-YearOld class in the Red & White Show, and with another calf to her credit, she went toe-to-toe with the Holsteins in 2022.
In the Holstein heifer show, Kingsway Alligator A Twix, the winning winter yearling, collected the Junior Champion title as well and then was voted Supreme Champion Heifer the next day for Velthuis Farms of Osgoode, ON. Second to her in class and too close in quality to split up for Reserve Junior Champion was Ms Thunderstorm EternityET, bred and owned by La Femme Fatale Syndicate of Kaukauna, WI.
The Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show hailed from North Lewisburg, Ohio as Ms Triple-T Grateful-ET won the Senior 3-Year-Old class for Colton Thomas. Judge Pat Conroy admired her fantastic udder, and then selected the winning Lifetime Production Cow, Kevetta Chelios Brooke as Reserve Grand Champion for Kyra & Griffin Lamb and Margaret Wispear of Oakfield, NY.
Vierra Dairy had another remarkable outing in this year’s edition of the International Jersey Show - taking home Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, and HM Grand Champion honors. Judge Keith Topp took his winning junior 3-year-old - Rivendale VIP Eloise - all the way to the Grand Champion tap. Eloise won the junior 2-year-old class here last year, and obviously, just got better and better after a second calf and another year on the show circuit. Another show veteran, Stoney Point Impression Blenda, won the Lifetime Cheese Production Cow class and her used her quality and longevity
to claim the Reserve Grand Champion crown. In an announcement that was no surprise to anyone, Vierra Dairy hoisted the Premier Exhibitor banner. They also earned their first Premier Breeder banner of the heifer show. Another west coast herd, Pacific Edge from Tillamook, OR happily took home the Premier Breeder title.
The Rivendale prefix was also carried by the Junior Champion - the 1st place fall calf exhibited by Trace Johnson and Sarah Fitzgerald of Poplar Grove, IL - Rivendale Venue Colby Jack-ET, who was also Junior Champion of the Junior Show and Supreme Champion Heifer of the Junior Show. Second to her in class and named Reserve Junior Champion was Stookeyholm Gentry Treasurer, bred and owned by Mallarie Stookey of Milford, IN.
Homeridge TT Annette is a familiar sight in the middle of the ring and she was there again as the Grand Champion of the International Junior Jersey Show for Kylie & Dawson Nickels, Budjon, Vail, Cunningham and Powers. She went on to be named Supreme Champion of the WDE Junior Shows later in the week. Winner of the National Jersey Jug Futurity in 2021, Annette was also Grand Champion of last year’s International Junior Jersey Show.
Judge Pat Lundy placed a record number 372 head in the International Red & White Show. Milksource Genetics, Ransom-Rail and Laurie Fischer came away with the Grand Champion trophy with Ms Ransom-Rail Beth-Red-ET, the winning 4-year-old who was also the Champion Bred & Owned Cow of the show. She beat out last year’s Grand Champion, Antia Absolute Joline-Red, exhibited by Milksource and Laurie Fischer, who took the Reserve Grand spot in 2022. Milksource was also named Premier Exhibitor and Oakfield Corner Dairy of Oakfield,NY claimed the Premier Breeder banner.
Tim & Sharyn Abbott had another champion to celebrate as co-owners, along with Chris & Jen Hill of Thurmont, MD, when North Effect Wa Tatas-Red won the Red & White Junior Champion title. The summer yearling then stood in some more head shots when she was selected Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer on Friday evening.
The 4-year-old Garay-Red Diamond-RedET, exhibited by Landree & Dakota Fraley of Muncy, PA garnered Grand Champion honors in the International Red & White Junior Show. W-Brook Hottest-Red won the fall calf class for the Hawvermale, Spreng, and Hinz kids of Wooster, Ohio on her way to being named Junior Champion of the Junior Show and Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer of the Junior Show.
Three times the charm for Valley Gem Atlas Malt who won her third Grand Champion trophy at the International Guernsey Show for Valley Gem Farms of Cumberland, WI. One of only two repeat Grand Champions at Expo this year, Malt just keeps ticking along and also won the Champion Bred & Owned and Best Uddered Cow of the Show awards. Judge Phil Topp kept the 1-2 punch in the Guernsey show the same as Springhill Kojack Uno-ETV repeated as Reserve Grand Champion as well. Exhibited by Ty & Ean Mader and Faith Ling of Springfield, MO, Uno was second to Malt in the aged cow class.
Knapp Genetics of Epworth, IA took home both the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners. Springhill and Elmhurst exhibited the Intermediate Champion with their junior 2-year-old, Heritage Brook LB Trillium-ET; and Edward Crossland saw his homebred Gladheart Beau Desi-ET win the spring yearling class on the way to being named Junior Champion.
Hi Guern View Asias Africa exhibited by Alaina Dinderman of Orangeville, IL topped the Junior Show as Grand Champion from the 5-year-old class, followed by Valley Gem Hit It Devora as Reserve Grand Champion, owned by Hannah Hurst, Brynn Grewe, and Kyle Polk of Waynesville, OH.
The International Brown Swiss show saw the other repeat Grand Champion from 2021 in Cutting Edge Thunder Faye, exhibited by Ken Main & Kenny Joe Manion of Copake, NY as
twice herself. A new Swiss star and a popular choice for Reserve Grand Champion was the winning senior 3-year-old and Intermediate Champion, Robland Norwin Bermuda-ET, exhibited by Tony Kohls & Goldfawn Farm of McGregor, TX.
Random-Luck Total Perfection was named Junior Champion of both the Open and Junior Shows for Jacob Harbaugh & Matthew Thompson of Marion, WI after placing first in the summer yearling class. The Premier Exhibitor banner went to the Main / Manion partnership, while the Premier Breeder prize was claimed by Elite Dairy - Ken Main & Peter Vail.
Northkill Creek Groovy won the 5-year-old class for her owners Hannah & Mark Balthaser of Bernville, PA before being crowned Grand Champion of the Junior Show. She used her fabulous udder all the way to Reserve Supreme Champion of the Junior Show honors on Friday, following up a Grand Champion win at the PA All-American Show in September. Longtime show campaigner Random Luck B Tea Rose stood first in the Component Merit Cow class for Matthew & Allison Thompson of Darlington, WI before her selection as Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show.
Palmyra Predator B Ruthless-ET moved into the #1 stall in 2022 as judge Chad Ryan chose her as his Grand Champion of the International Ayrshire Show. The Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion last year and again exhibited by Kurt Wolf and John Cannon of Epworth, IA, Ruthless followed in her mother’s footsteps as Grand Champion - Palmyra Berkley P Ruth was twice Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. Heineman Reagan Roz topped the senior 3-year-old class and nabbed the Intermediate
Champion title before being picked as the Reserve Grand Champion for her owner, Angela Fuller of Attica, NY.
Glamourview Farm of Walkersville, MD exhibited the Junior Champion - Lazy M Kingsire Xyllvi, who won the fall calf class, and fellow Maryland exhibitors Leslie & Linda Bruchey claimed the Reserve Junior Champion title with Stylin R Morticia, the 1st place summer yearling. More for Maryland as Palmyra Farm of Hagerstown, MD won the Premier Breeder banner while Peter Vail of Englewood, FL heard his name announced as the Premier Exhibitor.
Two Ohio owned cows sorted themselves to the top of the Junior Ayrshire Show. Bricker Farms Gibbs Carvella, owned by Todd, Lynsey, Allison, Kinslee & Lacey Bricker and Carli Binckley of Salem, OH was crowned Grand Champion. Toppglen Wishful Thinking-ET exhibited by Tanner, Brennan, Marissa & Logan Topp of West Salem, OH was tapped as Reserve Grand Champion.
Peter Vail also had a good outing in the International Milking Shorthorn Show as judge Joe Sparrow admired his senior 3-year-old, Lazy M Wildside Genette-EXP and named her Intermediate and Grand Champion of the show. The Reserve Grand Champion came from the aged cow class in Pine-Valley-P Junebug-EXP, owned by Salzl and James of Litchfield, MN. The breeder of the Grand Champion - Lazy M Farm, Michael & Herman Maier of Stitzer, WI - captured both the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners.
In addition to the Grand Champion, Peter Vail also owned the Junior Champion, LandsBrook KNH Chilli-Pepper, who topped the fall calf class. Heavenly Lookin Good-ET, exhibited by Brian & Traci Neely of Utica, PA came from the winter yearlings to be named Reserve Junior Champion.
The 4-year-old, Heavenly Zora-ET, owned by Dillon Freeman of Bremen, IN was chosen as Grand Champion of the Junior Show. She also won the International Type & Production Award. DND-Pirelli Onsight-EXP, also from the 4-year-old class, and owned by Jaxon Burris of Mabel, MN, followed Zora as Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show.

The 2022 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was presented to Timothy Coon of Amenia, New York, during World Dairy Expo 2022. Whitie Thomson was known for his exemplary leadership and sportsmanship in the Showring. This honor is awarded to a herdsman or showman that exhibits the same attributes the A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was founded on.
Coon’s roots take him back to his family’s Guernsey farm in eastern New York. His career has spanned time as a hoof trimmer and cattle fitter and working with Hanover Hill Sales and Service, The Cattle Exchange, and the Guernsey Marketing Service. In 1981, his passion for showing dairy cattle was further ignited during his first World Dairy Expo, and he has not missed a show since. Coon worked the World Premiere Sale in 1982 and traveled with Dreamstreet Holsteins under the direction of Buddy Fleming the year after where they won Grand, Reserve, and Supreme Champion titles.
The New York native then began heading up the show crew of Lylehaven Holsteins from Montpelier, Vermont. Lylehaven quickly became a household name with numerous World Dairy Expo class winners and AllAmericans for cows, heifers, and bulls. In 1995, Coon embarked on a journey with Piedmont Jersey Inc. in Coaticook, Quebec, Canada, who also exhibited a plethora of class winners, All-Americans, and All-Canadians. Specifically, Coon helped prepare Waymar Patrick Nadine EX-97 for two of her Grand Champion Jersey titles at World Dairy Expo.
Upon the turn of the century, Coon initiated his own show string which was made up of descendants of exceptional herds such as Woodmansee, Gage, Millbourne, Coondell, Long Pine, Oblong Valley, and many more. Most recently, the string has consisted of many from Elite Dairy in Copake, New York.
Grand Champion Brown Swiss, Cutting Edge Thunder Faye.
Coon is no stranger to receiving accolades such as Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. In 2015, he was named the Klussendorf-MacKenzie award winner. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Coon remains humble and radiates the spirit of the dairy industry to those around him.
Keenan Thygesen of Tunbridge, Vermont, was named the 18th Merle Howard Award winner at the 55th World Dairy Expo on Friday, October 7. “Hard-working” and “a can-do attitude” are two descriptions for this year’s Merle Howard Award Winner. In 4-H, Thygesen served as secretary, vice president, and then president of his club. As his 4-H career came to a close, he joined his state’s quiz bowl team that competed at the highly competitive National 4-H Dairy Knowledge Bowl competition in Louisville, Kentucky. That same year, Thygesen was a delegate to the National 4-H Dairy Conference.
With a deep desire to expand his dairy knowledge, Thygesen also competed in both Jeopardy and Quiz Bowl as a member of the New England Junior Holstein Association. A person who steps up to lead, he also served as secretary for that group. As a high school student at the Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, this year’s Merle Howard winner played baseball, basketball and was a member of the STEM Scholars group.
While these accolades are among the many reasons this young man won the Merle Howard award, it’s his work with the show string that ultimately led him to the winner circle. This Vermont dairy exhibitor has walked animals in four breeds across
Champion of the International Guernsey Show. This year, Thygesen, along with his cousin, earned third place honors with their homebred Ayrshire summer junior two-yearold cow.
A fitter who continues to hone his talents, Thygesen earned fourth and fifth place finishes at the two most recent youth fitting contests at World Dairy Expo. In addition, he has groomed cattle for many farms across the Northeast and Midwest. To further develop his skills, Thygesen interned at Luck-E Holsteins this past summer.
Thygesen is the son of Kyle and Jen Thygesen and is currently a freshman at the University of Minnesota majoring in animal science. A unique aspect about Thygesen is that he is an accomplished poultry breeder. He received the American Poultry Association scholarship in 2022, the highest award given to a youth of that national organization.
Merle Howard was a respected dairy industry pioneer. Winner of the 1954 Klussendorf Award, Howard was a herd manager, Holstein classifier, and later a sales and export businessman. Howard also served on the first National Dairy Shrine Board of Directors.
John Erbsen of Lanark, Illinois, was presented the 80th Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States, during the 55th World Dairy Expo. Erbsen embodies every great quality of a great dairyman.
The award is given in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered an outstanding showman of his time and a model for all who have followed him. This year’s selection was made by members of the Klussendorf Memorial Association, formed in 1937, at its annual meeting held earlier this week in Madison, Wis. Erbsen received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New
Erbsen is among the most unique individuals to ever win the award. He continues to have a highly successful career in the A.I. industry as a dairy programs specialist and has captured outstanding cattle images as a professional photographer. Both vocations span over three decades.
As good as this Illinois native is in those spaces, it’s his cow sense that ultimately led fellow Klussendorf Association members to select this individual as the 80th winner of North America’s most coveted show award. Having developed a friendship with the Kamps Family of Kamps-Hollow, he also became a big fan of Kamps-Hollow Altitude. Because of his suggestion to Select Sires, KHW Kite Advent-Red entered A.I. service and made a tremendous impact for the Red & White Holstein breed. It’s at this time that Erbsen also negotiated a purchase of Advent’s sister
KHW Regiment Apple-Red and owned her with several partners throughout the years. Today, we simply know this cow as “Apple” as she has transformed the Red & White breed. The Apple legacy unfolded when she won the Junior Two-Year-Old Cow Class at the International Holstein Show. Five years later, Apple ascended to become the Grand Champion at the International Red & White Show. Then, in 2013, one of the unique moments in World Dairy Expo annals took place — Apple’s clone, Apple 3, was named Grand Champion. Apple, herself, was named Reserve Grand Champion, and Apple’s daughter earned honorable mention honors that year. Fast forward to this year, Apple was named the All-Time Red & White World Champion by the Holstein International magazine.
The next chapter of Erbsen’s incredible story began to unfold in 2013 when he invested in Apple’s six-month-old daughter, Miss Apple Snapple. Two years later, Snapple also won the Junior Two-Year-Old Cow Class at World Dairy Expo. Prior to that moment in time, Snapple was flushed and one of her calves was Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. Shakira eventually ascended to the pinnacle of World Dairy Expo stardom when she was named Supreme Champion for her new owners in 2021. While many great people contributed to the success of these great cows, John Erbsen was in the middle of it all.
Joel Phoenix of Cannington, Ontario, Canada, was presented the 31st KlussendorfMacKenzie Award during World Dairy Expo® 2022, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. While this year’s Klussendorf-MacKenzie award winner has an impressive dairy resumé, it is most important to note that Phoenix exemplifies the standards that made Duncan MacKenzie the forbearer of this award.
This year’s MacKenzie winner was a very active 4-H member and developed his skills to a level that enabled him to become a world-renowned cattle fitter. Spending more than 15 years as a professional dairy cattle fitter, this Canadian has traveled the world to work with many great people and animals. In 2013, Phoenix was honored with the inaugural Andrea Crowe Achievement Award at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada, for exhibiting “everyday love of the industry” that inspires others, fosters knowledge, and encourages good sportsmanship.
At the shows, this Ontario dairyman is known for his sportsmanship, never having a negative word for a judge after a difficult defeat and is extremely humble when he has showring success. He is a knowledgeable source of advice for anyone who asks, and his honesty makes him a valuable partner to those who purchase animals with him.
As a result of his efforts, the family dairy has owned and merchandized many All-

came from nor who his family and friends are.
Phoenix would be the first to acknowledge that it takes a team to run a dairy and quick to thank his wife, Jessica, and their children, Jacob and Jordan, and his father, Jim, for their work on the farm. A successful Holstein judge, this Ontario Holstein breeder has placed cattle across Canada and around the world. This includes being the associate Holstein
judge at both the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. In addition, Joel has judged cattle at the Mexican National Holstein and Jersey Show, the New South Wales Australian Show, the Atlantic Fall Championship Show, and the Manitoba Spring Show.
2022 McKown Master Breeder Award Cow families have always remained at the heart of Ralph Shank Jr. and Mary Shank Creek’s successful breeding program. Along with Shank’s wife Terrie and Creek’s husband Mike, they own and operate Palmyra Farm in Hagerstown, Maryland, in addition to their children and grandchildren who are the fourth and fifth generations on the family farm.
The siblings’ dedication to the Ayrshire breed and its future has been nearly immeasurable. In honor of their hard work and success, they have been selected by the Klussendorf Association as this year’s recipients of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award. This prestigious award honors exemplary breeders who have been successful at showing and judging dairy cattle. Winners embody qualities associated with the Klussendorf Award, including character, ability, endeavor, and sportsmanship. This award will be formally presented to Shank and Creek during the International Ayrshire Show on Wednesday, October 5 at World Dairy Expo.
The long list of Palmyra bulls placed into A.I. displays their dedication and strong breeding philosophy, totaling 81 Ayrshires and 16 Holsteins. Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette is a high production and type bull with over 6,500 daughters in 1,600 herds and has been a key player in the progress of the Ayrshire breed. To round out his accomplishments, Burdette was the Premier Sire at World Dairy Expo for seven consecutive years from 2013 to 2019 and has sired national champions in seven countries.
Excellent cows pair well with proven sires, which is why nearly 200 Palmyra cows have been listed on the Ayrshire Elite Cow Performance Index (CPI) list, including 42 in a single round. Additionally, 10 of their cows have ranked first. Palmyra Berkely P Ruth-ET (EX-94) is a former top CPI leader and a two-time Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. She went on to become the Total Performance winner at Expo in 2018 and a three-time unanimous All-American. Her daughter was named Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the International Ayrshire Show at World Dairy Expo in 2021. Ruth’s full brother, Palmyra Berkely Reagan-ET, has been the most heavily sampled Ayrshire young sire in the U.S. with over 20,000 units of semen sold. He is following closely in Burdette’s footsteps, receiving his first Premier Sire banner in 2021. Palmyra Farm’s emphasis on breeding for production is evident, having over 150 cows with lifetime production totals of 100,000 pounds of milk or more, at least 40 with over 150,000 pounds of milk, and five
others with over 200,000 pounds of milk. Palmyra is a progressive Ayrshire herd, being the first to utilize embryo transfer in the country. Further, they have showcased their genetics internationally by exporting embryos to 10 foreign countries.
To match their success with breeding productive cows, this duo has also found success in the showring. Shank and Creek have been Premier Breeder 11 times, Premier Exhibitor nine times, and have shown Grand Champion cows three times at the International Ayrshire Show at World Dairy Expo. They have won Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners numerous times at the All-American Dairy Show and Maryland State Fair. To date, they have earned 158 All-American Ayrshire nominations and achieved 49 All-American designations. Among these nominations are seven consecutive generations of Palmyra’s Ginger family. In 2011, they were recognized with the Ayrshire Master Breeder Award. Further, they have received multiple Ayrshire French production trophies and a Constructive Breeder Award.
As important as excellent breeding is to this family, they also have a passion for supporting their community, the dairy industry, breed organizations, and agriculture youth programs. Over the years, they have hosted 19 student interns from 10 universities. They strive to connect with the community by hosting many tours and visitors to their farm every year, along with many classification workshops and dairy judging practices. To add to their portfolio of endeavors, they launched Palmyra Farm Cheese in 2009, which produces unique Cheddar cheeses from their Ayrshire cows.
Shank and Creek have held several leadership roles and titles. Shank previously served the Maryland Ayrshire Association as a president and director. He was also chair of the National Ayrshire Youth Committee and chaired the 1998 National Ayrshire Convention along with his wife.
While Shank stays closer to the day-today aspects of the farm, Creek is a global ambassador for the Ayrshire breed. She has served on the U.S. Ayrshire Breeder’s Association Board of Directors, was the World Ayrshire Federation President from 2012 to 2016, and is a past president of National Dairy Shrine. She has judged shows locally and internationally, and in 2015, she judged the International Ayrshire Show at WDE. In 2012, she was recognized as World Dairy Expo’s “Dairy Woman of the Year”. To round out their success, they were presented the National Dairy Shrine’s Outstanding Breeders Award in 2019.
Shank and Creek are a humble team. They have forged their way to the top of elite Ayrshire genetics, and no job or task along the way has been too small or insignificant. No matter their accomplishments in the showring or on classification days, they never forget to support those around them and to ensure the whole breed is making progress. Their dedication to the Ayrshire breed and dairy industry is admirable and has now earned them and Palmyra Farm the title of the 2022 McKown Master Breeder Award winners.
Past winners of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award include: Cutting Edge Brown Swiss, Copake, N.Y., 2021; Woodsmansee Holsteins, Preston, Conn., 2019; Ovaltop Holsteins, Richfield Springs, N.Y., 2018; Wendon Holsteins, Innisfail, Alberta, 2017; Ferme Jacobs Inc., Cap-Santé, Quebec, 2016; Walk-Era, Wisconsin Dells, Wis., 2015; Pond View Farm, Danville, Vt., 2014; Quality Holsteins, Vaughan, Ontario, 2013; Windsor Manor Farms, New Windsor, Md., 2012; Moondale, Monona, Iowa, 2011; Snider Homestead, New Enterprise, Pa., 2010; and Windy Knoll View, Mercersburg, Pa., 2009. No award was given in the pandemic year of 2020.
The Robert “Whitey” McKown Breeder Award was made possible by the family and friends of the 1997 Honorary Klussendorf honoree after his passing in 2009. McKown joined the Holstein World staff in 1956 and became widely respected as he traveled nationally and internationally, reporting on shows, sales, meetings, and other Holstein events. The 1987 National Dairy Shrine president also developed McKown Holsteins at Belleville, N.Y. He had great admiration for the farmer breeder.
The Klussendorf Memorial Association, considered by many as the Hall of Fame for dairy cattle exhibitors, began in 1937 in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered the outstanding dairy cattle showman of his time. Each year, the Klussendorf Association votes to add a new dairy cattle exhibitor to its rolls with lifetime membership for their cumulative works.
Annette Kay Ostrom, 49, of De Pere, WI, was called to her home in heaven October 19, 2022, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Annette was born October 30, 1972, in Sheboygan Falls, WI, a daughter to Gladys (Justinger) and the late Hans Palm. She attended Sheboygan Falls High School and University of WisconsinMadison, where she received a degree in agriculture in 1995. On December 28, 2007, she married James J. Ostrom and settled in DePere, WI, where they raised four children.
In both her professional and private lives, Annette cared deeply about people and paid attention — a wonderful combination that uplifted all who knew her. She understood that when it came to a person’s family, there were no “little things.” Remembering the names of a friend or colleague’s children wasn’t enough — Annette knew their ages and their life goals, building warm connections with everyone. That incandescent compassion could not overshadow a fierce strength that was never more apparent than during her brave fight against cancer. Annette never lost her grace, never lost her fortitude, never lost her faith.
Annette was a beloved figure in the Wisconsin dairy industry, both as a long-time business manager for Zoetis, as well as for her passion for the dairy-cattle-showing community. Just weeks before her passing, she was at the World Dairy Expo in Madison supporting family, friends and her own highly successful show-cow team.
Annette served as a co-founder of Dairy Cares of Wisconsin, a non-profit organization that has raised more than $2 million in support of Children’s Wisconsin (formerly Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin). Her selfless spirit and kindness live on in the children and families that have benefited
from those efforts. In 2017, Annette and her husband, Jim, accepted the “Wisconsin Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award” on behalf of Dairy Cares during National Philanthropy Day. Though her name was etched onto the plaque, Annette always insisted she accepted the award on behalf of a large team of volunteers of which she was just one.
Ultimately, nothing brought Annette more joy than watching her family grow and develop into outstanding young adults: Carlie, Mac, Shelby and Tristen were sources of pride, inspiration and good humor. Above all else, motherhood and family were Annette’s touchstones. Annette leaves behind her husband Jim; her four children Carlie, Mac, Shelby and Tristen; her mother Gladys; brothers Dean (Ruth Ann) Palm, Howards Grove, and Larry (Kathy) Palm, DePere; sister Heidi (Tom) Haack, Sheboygan Falls; mother-in-law Mary Bahlke, Watertown; father-in-law Donald (Linda) Ostrom, Oconomowoc; brothers-in-law Glenn (Irina) Ostrom, Greenville, Craig (Heidi) Ostrom, Wauwatosa, and Lance (Laurel) Ostrom, Concord, Mass.; and sister-in-law Sue Ellen (Mark) Pernitz, New Glarus. Annette also is survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving father Hans Palm and grandparents.
A special thank you to the amazing community of friends, colleagues, caregivers and loved ones who rallied around Annette throughout her courageous battle. The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Koster, who diagnosed her illness immediately and provided exceptional care until the day she passed. On the good days and the bad, in the victories and setbacks, Annette never struggled alone. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable gift to Dairy Cares of Wisconsin, N3569 Vanden Bosch Road, Freedom, WI 54130.
The purebred dairy show cattle world is a very results-driven industry. People travels thousands of miles to watch, exhibit at or purchase from the elite shows every year. There comes a point that every young person involved in the dairy industry must decide their future – and with the industry ever-changing, those options are vaster than what they ever have been before. For Tyler Endres, he has paved his own future combining a love of dairy farming and cattle fitting.
KnH-Endres, located in Reedsburg, WI, started as a small Holstein farm by Tyler’s parents, Kevin (a 5th generation farmer) and Heidi. Tyler began clipping at shows and sales 10 years ago while in high school and quickly grew an affinity for it and traveled throughout the Midwest and beyond. “I always enjoyed Holsteins and never thought I’d venture out,” commented Tyler, “but after I started clipping, I learned to appreciate and admire the great cows of other breeds. It also helped that I started working for and became friends with some of the best breeders in colored breeds.”
Today, KnH-Endres is home to 45 milk cows and 60 head of young stock and they milk all seven breeds. “We appreciate a good one no matter the color of her hide,” remarked Tyler.
Tyler credits two mentors for his start and success in the colored breeds. Kurt Wolf of Old-Bankston Ayrshires and Keith
Fisher of Hard Core Farm. “Kurt was a friend early on in my clipping career. I was clipping at the Wisconsin State Ayrshire Show and he had a pretty little spring calf. I had no intention of buying an Ayrshire, but Morgan tripped my trigger,” recalled Tyler. Old-N-Lazy Gibbs Morgan was out of Sharwards Calimero Megan (EX-94 3E), whose daughters had been lighting up the show ring over the last few years for Kurt and Mike Maier. And Morgan was no exception, earning All-American or Junior All-American nominations in 2015, 2016, 2019 & 2020. She was in her prime as a 4-year-old, earning Grand Champion honors of the Junior Show in Madison for Tyler’s sister Mikayla.
“Kurt definitely helped keep the success going with Morgan, and I always went to him for advice and more importantly mating decisions,” remarked Tyler. Merci is a Burdette daughter that will show as a junior 2-year-old for Tyler. Morgan’s other Burdette daughter, Mayhem, was named Junior Champion of the 2018 International Ayrshire Show for Linda and Leslie Bruchey of Maryland and was Unanimous AllAmerican Summer Yearling. Now scored Excellent and housed at Palmyra Farms, Mayhem has two show-winning daughters sired by Reagan: Maleficent was Reserve All-American Summer Yearling in 2021; and Morticia was 1st summer yearling and Reserve Junior Champion in Madison this October.
Tyler credits Keith Fisher for his entry into the Milking Shorthorn world. “When I was 16, Keith hired me to work for him at Harrisburg; I had never worked a complete string for anyone before that and it was my first ever plane ride!” recalled Tyler. “I knew I was working for Keith Fisher, but I didn’t know him from ‘Adam’. I didn’t realize who I was actually clipping for until I saw Hard Core painted on the showbox!” Over the past decade, Keith has turned into a great friend to Tyler and a source for advice.
Tyler purchased his first Milking Shorthorn privately from Michelle Upchurch in 2015. “She was an Excellent, just fresh, aged cow, with a nice pedigree and has been All-American Milking Yearling in 2010,” Tyler said. When Tyler did some more research, he soon realized that Mi-San Acres Othello Lulu (EX-91 2E) had a deep maternal line backed by Mi-San Acres Lola (EX-92 3E), a 2X All-American herself and had a pedigree to market from. “She has been such a huge asset to my foundation in the breed,” remarked Tyler. “I’ve always believed in starting with some of the best blood and building from there.” And Tyler has done just that.
Her most well-known daughter is KnH-Endres Zues Legendary (EX-92 2E), All-
My clipping career has taken me further than I ever imagined. When I first started, I struggled with the idea that I could make a living doing it. Not only have I done that, but I also have made more connections and learned so much from people I admire and respect.
TYLER ENDRESAmerican from 2017-2020, with three of those titles being Unanimous. In 2017, she was Junior Champion in Madison and followed that up with a Reserve Junior Champion title in 2018. She won Madison again in 2019 and was named All-American in 2020 after a limited show season. Legendary’s first daughter, KnHEndres Comanche La-Di-Da was 4th out of 24 spring calves in Madison this fall, and Tyler plans on marketing her full brother, Legend Man, in the coming months. Lulu’s other daughter, KnH-Endres Living In A Shadow (VG-88) was nominated All-American Winter Yearling in 2019. Legendary and Living In A Shadow are both still in the herd and will continued to be developed along with their progeny.
While all seven breeds are currently represented at the farm, Tyler admits the Milking Shorthorns dominate his herd. Winning the 5-year-old class in Madison this year was Molehill Lottery Caliente (EX92 2E), a cow owned in partnership with Mike Gregory. The last two years, Caliente has been a Unanimous All-American and her Reserve Senior Champion nod on the colored shavings has boosted her chances yet again this year.
Lands-Brooks KnH Zeus Chilli Pepper was Supreme Champion at the Iowa State Fair earlier this summer and was owned in partnership with her breeder, Larry Landsgard. She was sold to Peter Vail before Expo, and went on to win the fall calf class, and eventually was tapped as Junior Champion. “When Larry sold his cows, he wanted to keep a few - Chilli Pepper’s dam was one of them - and our partnership was formed,” commented Tyler. “She is one of the earliest partnership calves on the ground and we’re really excited for her future.” She is a Zeus from an EX-92 Megadeath daughter of Lands-
Brook Chippewa (EX-93 4E), from the same family as 6X All-American LandsBrook Christine-EXP (EX-96 4E).
While breeding and developing his own herd is important to Tyler, he attributes a large part of that to his parents. “They have been my biggest supporters, and without them, none of this would be possible.”
Tyler is referring to the fact that he is on the road 300+ days a year, either clipping at sales, shows or other herds. When Tyler is home, he is completely hands-on; while on the road, he communicates daily about anything that arises – every decision is discussed whether it be a mating choice, a change in diet on heifers or which cattle need to go to certain shows. “My clipping career has taken me further than I ever imagined. When I first started, I struggled with the idea that I could make a living doing it. Not only have I done that, but I also have made more connections and learned so much from people I admire and respect,” commented Tyler. “Growing up, we always showed and had success at the local shows, but once I started clipping, we changed gears and were able to compete at national levels,” he said. “In this business, you can learn as much as you want to, just by talking to and watching how other people work and that can take you a long way.”
Another niche that Tyler has explored in the last 5 years with great success is a boarding business. While somewhat limited on room, they make the most of what they have on the farm currently, housing cows in a 42-stall barn with 5 boxstalls. They also have a barn for general population heifers and a separate area for show and sale heifers.
When home, Tyler rinses heifers daily during show season to promote topline hair growth. Plans are also under way to build another barn for bred heifers and dry cows that would have a pack on one side which could accommodate more milk cows if needed.
“When it comes to boarded cattle, we treat them all as if they are our own,” said Tyler. “We try and keep the owners involved by sending them photos since most of our clients are out of state. When it comes to decision-making, we ask what their goals are, if there are certain shows they want to go to and so forth.” Tyler attends numerous shows around the Midwest with his own and boarded cattle, earning ribbons everywhere he goes. He and his family have accumulated over 50 All-American or Junior All-American nominations they have either owned, or bred, between five different breeds. And, that number is sure to grow after the 2022 show season Tyler had.
To date, World Dairy Expo 2022 was Tyler’s largest string of cattle he was solely in charge of, and a what a week they had. “I’m a firm believer there are two keys to success: first, is having the animals ready.
“KnH-Endres Zues Legendary (EX-92 2E) is a 3X Unanimous All-American and has daughters that are lighting up the tanbark. Molehill Lottery Caliente (EX-92 2E) is owned with Mike Gregory and capped off the 2022 show season with a Reserve Senior Champion nod at Expo.
They are on a pretty consistent pattern at home, and I keep it the same at the shows. The second key is a good crew; it makes everything go so much easier if you have people that you can rely on and trust.” Tyler and his crew cared for 27 head – 14 animals came from his farm, with 5 of them owned by he and his family, and 11 of the 14 were milk cows. Of those 27, 21 were top 7 or better. “Considering we only milk 45 cows, my family and I took pride in the fact that almost 25% of the cows in our barn metaled at Madison this year,”
commented Tyler. “For me, I only try and take cattle that will land in the top 6, but a solid goal is to go home with a metal.”
The biggest thing Tyler had noticed with his boarding business is the consistency and long-term care that is directly related to the results at the end of the year. “We take care of most of the cattle that we board year-round, but there are ones that come 2-3 months prior to the fall shows or to gear up for spring sales. I’ve noticed that we are really able to see a difference if we keep them for longer, however. So many of our young cows really develop and mass out over their dry period after their first lactation if they stay with us,” Tyler added. “We take as much if not more pride in the boarded cattle as we do our own. It’s a great feeling
seeing them mature and succeed in the future.”
While the 2022 season is wrapping up, Tyler already has his sights set on 2023. “We plan on continuing to work with our board clients throughout the winter and welcoming new clients in the coming year,” remarked Tyler. “Personally, I hope to continue breeding, developing and marketing genetics that will compete in the ring.” While clipping abroad has been his focus for the last decade, Tyler does admit to hoping to slow does and spend more time at the home farm because he’s found a lot of enjoyment there. Either as a breeder or a fitter, Tyler Endres and KnH are names that the industry will continue to hear over the loud speakers for years to come.
By Julie Ashton“We take as much if not more pride in the boarded cattle as we do our own. It’s a great feeling seeing them mature and succeed in the future.”
“It’s the little things that make big things possible”
It’s a tale as old as time in the purebred cattle business - the parents are milking a nice herd of grade cattle when one of their kids gets hooked on the dream of registered cattle. In 1984, Louis Lalande purchased a yearling heifer in the Holstein Canada Centennial Sale for his son, Simon. While everyone who buys a heifer on a sale is optimistic, the cow family stemming from Diamond Hill Warden Lass succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. To think that she would be the foundation for not only one, but two, EX-97 cows truly beggars belief!
Like so many good Canadian cow families, the Supras find their start in the Maritimes. Bred by Hollis Newson in Prince Edward Island from his Master Breeder Diamond Hill herd, Warden Lass would score VG-87 as a 3-yearold. Her pedigree at time was solid, if not famous: a VG 2* Roybrook Tempo dam, a VG Flemingdale Perseus Mark granddam, and then an Ontario-bred EX 2* Vinedale Perseus Angelo from the William Broughton herd.
Like many teenagers, Simon loved showing and the hottest type bull at
the time was Hanoverhill Starbuck. The third calf from Warden Lass was born in March, 1988 and Blondin Starbuck Superlass was the gateway to the family becoming known worldwide. Eventually scoring VG87 and racking up 17* on the brood cow front, Superlass had 17 out of 19 daughters from ten different sires score VG or EX. She also had four lactations well over 30,000M on her way to producing more than 250,000 pounds of milk lifetime.
Foremost among her daughters is our subject cow - Blondin Skychief Supra EX-93-3E-CAN 35*. Born in March of 1995, Supra had a modest start to her milking career scoring GP-82 fresh just three months. She was raised to VG later in her first lactation with a VG mammary, but her highest breakdown score, as it would be throughout her life, was her VG-88 in dairy strength. That dairy strength would be a highly consistent trait transmitted through generations of Supras even looking at the family today.
She eventually would mature into her EX-93 score and had success at a number of local Quebec shows, being named Grand Champion at Papineau in 2000 and at Berthier in 2001. Like her dam, she also had several lactations over 30,000M and her lifetime milk production totals over 260,000M
with a 3.9% and 3.4p. She had a long career at Blondin and lived to over 17 years of age, passing away in 2012.
Pierre Boulet bought into her in 2002 and from that point forward, Supra’s progeny carried either the Blondin or Pierstein prefixes. Supra was flushed extensively and produced 42 VG or EX daughters, many of whom were merchandised and found their homes in herds across Canada. Supra was flushed to most of the top type sires over a decade, and a bull that nicked especially well with Supra and her offspring was Indianhead Red-Marker EX-CAN.
Blondin R Marker Supra VG-89-CAN 12*, born in March 2001, became a nice local show cow like her mother, but most importantly, she was a red carrier and her genetics would create history in the Red & Whites. R Marker Supra entered the flush program at Blondin and a mating to Valleyriver Ruben Redman EXCAN would produce one of the most famous Red & White cows in the world - Blondin Redman Seisme, the first Red & White cow to score EX-97. Seisme dominated the Red & White show ring for several years for her owners Milksource Genetics of Kaukauna, WI. She is a three-time
of the Red & White Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, where she was named Supreme Champion in 2010. She’s twice been Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show at Madison, and twice was named International Red & White Cow of the Year. Now at EX-97 2E 4*, Seisme now has 18 daughters scored VG & EX across North America, with the highest scored EX94.
Seisme’s Ladd-P daughter, Milksource LD Shania-Red-ET EX-92, owned by Jason & Sheri Danhof of Waukon, IA has also been a prolific brood cow and has exported plenty of embryos that have influenced the red breed in Europe. Her VG-89 Awesome daughter was the German National R&W Junior Champion in 2019 and is the dam of Hoven Holsteins Avatar Red, is a popular Red show type sire in Germany, ranking #8 on the Red Type list there. Just recently, her Rubels granddaughter, Logan Rubels Seisme ET (out of a VG-88 Jordy) was named Reserve Champion Super Heifer at the 2022 AgriScot Show for B G Yates & Son of Castle Douglas, Scotland.
A full sister to Seisme, while not achieving the same high individual score, has also been a notable red brood cow from the family - Blondin Redman Sesame VG-85-CAN 4*. Mother to ten VG & EX daughters, her VG-86-CAN Redliner is the dam of Redtag Destry Sneezy EX-94 1*, the Grand Champion of the International Red & White Junior Show in 2017 and several times nominated AllAmerican Red & White. Her Diamondback daughter, Savage-Leigh Selser-Red
VG-89, was crowned Grand Champion of the 2022 Canadian National Convention Red & White Show for her owners Westcoast Holsteins of Chilliwack, BC.
A red Talent daughter out of R Marker Supra - Blondin Talent Salena EX-93-2ECAN 4* - produced a Destry daughter that has captured plenty of rosettes for her breeder. Blondin Destry Sally EX-93 3* was Grand Champion at the Royal Red & White Show in 2014 and at the Quebec Spring Red & White Show in 2015. She’s continued the family tradition of making red winners in the show ring, with Blondin Absolute Nohl Salya EX-91 being a regular campaigner in Switzerland and Blondin Armani Stella Artois-Red EX-94 claiming several Red & White show titles in Wisconsin and the Midwest.
Now that we’ve explored some of the Red & White females in the family, we can look at a few prolific black & white branches of the Supra tree. One of the Supra daughters to make her own mark in the show ring was Blondin James Supra EX-90 9*, who was the Reserve All-Canadian 4-Year-Old in 2004, and a regular class winner at Eastern Ontario
and Quebec shows. Today, she is probably best known as the dam of Blondin R Marker Sublime EX-93-CAN 21*. With 34 daughters scored VG & EX, Sublime writes her own brood cow chapter in the Supra book, but her matings to Braedale Goldwyn are what really jump off the page with 19 of those being VG & EX in the US and Canada. Here’s where we come to the second EX-97 cow in the direct line from Supra - Blondin Goldwyn Subliminale.
In the US, we know her as Subliminal (her name shortened to meet Holstein USA standards after she was purchased by Budjon Farms and Peter & Lyn Vail). All-Canadian Mature Cow in 2016 and All-American Lifetime Production Cow in 2017, Subliminal scored EX-97 in May 2021 along with a 4E designation. A cow that produced more and more milk with each lactation, her top record of 44,740 4.3% 1921 3.2p 1451 contributes to her lifetime totals over 310,000M 12,360F and 10,456P. With 35 VG & EX daughters to date and with daughters still being born, she also excels on the reproductive front. With all of those boxes ticked, she was a natural to win the Holstein USA Star of the Breed award in 2021. Retired after the 2021 show season and Reserve All-American Lifetime Production Cow title, her embryos and family members continue to be in demand around the globe.
In addition to Subliminal, Sublime’s influence continues through several other
Blondin Goldwyn Sunsation EX-903E-CAN has a daughter, Blondin Avalanche Sunburst VG-87-CAN that was nominated All-Canadian Intermediate Yearling in 2020 for Kingway and Colin Meulendyk. A notable headliner in 2021 was Blondin Denver Svalantini, now a VG-87 2-year-old. Sold through the Blondin 2020 sale, Svalantini won the winter yearling class and was tapped the Reserve Junior Champion at the 2021 International Holstein Show for her then owners, Quality Holsteins, Brian Enright,
and Ferme Jacobs (she is now owned by Quality Holsteins, Beckridge Holsteins, and Agriber Societa Agricola SRL). She was named AllAmerican Winter Yearling at the end of the show season, racking up another title for the family.
Red Marker Supra also had a nice nick with Goldwyn that produced Pierstein Goldwyn Sunshine EX-96-3E, who was the Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal and HM All-Canadian Senior 3-Year-Old for Pierre Boulet in 2010. She’s another cow in the family with over
200,000M and a number of VG & EX daughters. The continual blending of strength and udder bulls in the Supra family pedigree seems to guarantee a future filled with high-scoring, high-producing cows.
It’s that cow family and that dedication to constructive matings that made the Supra family highly-influential in the Blondin herd winning two Master Breeder shields. Skychief Supra herself was Holstein Canada’s Cow of the Year in 2009. When different branches of the family total up 30, 40 or 50 brood cow stars, the space limitations of a magazine article can never tell the full story - but two EX-97 cows, one red & white and one black & white, but closely related makes for a pretty good headline! So the next time you’re at a sale and a stylish yearling heifer catches your eye, bid last - you never know where she might take you!

2022 is a banner year for show ring enthusiasts as it is the 100th Anniversary of the Holstein All-American contest. Here is Part 2 of 3 parts exploring the most significant show ring type bulls of the last 100 years:
Agro Acres Marquis Ned RC* EX sired many All-Americans and All-Canadians between 1976 and 1984. He was a son of Romandale Reflection Marquis and out of Almamellek Haven Nelle EX-6*, a Roeland Reflection Sovereign paternal granddaughter with lifetime totals of 242,976 milk, 3.7%, 8,988 fat. Ned was an important source of the red factor. Born in 1964, he was bred by Agro Acres, Hamilton, Ontario and was at Western Ontario Breeders, Inc., Woodstock, Ontario. Ned could produce a great one. Cathland Countess EX was reserve AllAmerican Aged Cow in 1979 and 1983 and was often compared to the True Type Model Cow. Another Ned daughter Jeraldine Cinnamon Supreme EX-96 GMD was Reserve All-American Three-Year-Old in 1976 and All-American Four-Year-Old in 1977. In 1984, C Innkip Rocket HannaRed EX-95-2E was named Reserve AllAmerican Three-Year-Old. Willowholme Mark Anthony EX is out of an Agro Acres Marquis Ned daughter Willowholme Ned Arlene EX. Mark Anthony is in the pedigree of Comestar Laurie Sheik VG88 23* who was the dam and granddam of several Comestar bulls who sired many show winners including Comestar Stormatic, Lee, Leader, Lheros, Outside and Lauthority. Mark Anthony also sired the dam of Boulet Charles who sired many show winners in the 1990’s.
Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation EX-96 GM was born in 1965 and still is considered the most influential bull of the Holstein breed 57 years later. Elevation sired a rare combination of superior production, conformation and longevity. He had more than 100,000 recorded offspring and has over 8.8 million descendants. It is almost impossible to find a Holstein in North America without Elevation in its pedigree today. There were many outstanding individuals sired by Elevation who did well in the show ring. One of the first Elevation daughters to excel in the show ring was Northcroft Ella Elevation EX-97-4E GMD DOM who was All-American Three-Year-Old in 1977 and later was named All-American Aged Cow in 1980, 1981 and 1982. In 1984 she was named the All-Time All-American Aged Cow. Another three-time All-American Elevation was Shadowcliff R A Gina EX97-4E GMD DOM who was All-American in 1979, 1980 and 1981 as a Two-Year-Old, Three-Year-Old and Four-Year-Old. She was named the All-Time All-American Two- and Three-Year-Old in 1984. A third cow, Tyrbach Elevation Twinkie EX-97-3E, was All-American three times, and 1986 was the first cow to be judged the Grand Champion at the Eastern, Central, and Western National Shows and Royal Winter Fair in the same year. Several Elevation sons also sired show winners including Hilltopper Warden, Hanoverhill Starbuck, Marshfield Elevation Tony and Straight-
Pine Elevation Pete. Four S-W-D Valiant sons who sired show winners during the 1990’s - Carnation Counselor, Kingstead Valiant Tab, Townson Lindy and ConantAcres JY Broker - were out of Elevation dams. Four-time All-American and Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo (1982, 1984, 1985, 1987), Brookview Tony Charity EX-97 DOM sired by Kanza Matt Tony was also out of an Elevation dam. Kanza Matt Tony was a full brother to Kanza Matt Tippy EX-96 the All-American Aged Cow and Grand Champion of the Central National Holstein Show in 1971.
Quality Ultimate EX was the Premier Sire at the Central National Show in Madison five times, dominating the classes from 1979 to 1985. His daughters were known for their extreme size and dairy quality. Ultimate himself was a very tall individual. Born in 1971, he was a son of Agro Acres Pansy Ace-TW who was a double Grandson of Romandale Reflection Marquis and his Very Good dam was out of a Rosafe Citation R son. Millervale Ultimate Rosalynn EX-95 DOM was Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo and All-American Four-Year-Old in 1983. Campbell-Hollow Ultimate Kate EX95 GMD DOM was Reserve All-American Four and Five-Year-Old. Coming from Canada was Walkerbrae Rose Blossom EX3E 5* who was All-American Three-YearOld in 1983. Hanoverhill Ultimate Fay EX was Reserve All-American Five-Year-Old.
S-W-D Valiant EX-95 GM was born 6/28/1973 and sired tall, strong cows with dairyness and high, wide rear udders with high production and components. He was the result of mating Pawnee Farm Arlinda Chief on a Very Good Irvington Pride Admiral. The outstanding
Northcroft Ella Elevation (EX-97-4E GMD DOM) was one of the first Elevation daughters to excel in the showring. Shadowcliff R A Gina (EX-97 4E GMD DOM) was a 3X All-American and named All-Time All-American Two- and Three-Year-Old. Millervale Ultimate Rosalyn (EX-95 DOM) was Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 1983; that same year, Ultimate was Premier Sire at WDE, All American & West Expo.C
Valiant sons out of Elevation dams were mentioned above. Another outstanding Valiant son was Hanover-Hill Inspiration out of the popular Hanover-Hill Triple Threat-Red daughter Tora Triple Threat Lulu EX-96 GMD DOM. Inspiration was an impressive-looking individual and was Premier Sire of the International Holstein Show in 1991. He was also the sire of Boulet Charles-ET who was a Premier Sire in the late 1990’s. All-American Valiant daughters include Howard-Home Valiant Eva EX-94 GMD DOM as a Senior Two-Year-Old, Farlow Valiant Rosie EX-94 DOM, Four-Year-Old and Du-Ma-Ti Valiant Boots Jewel EX-93 DOM, Four-Year-Old and Reserve All-American Four-Year-Old Quietcove Valiant Fawn EX-95 GMD DOM. Hilltopper Warden EX was the type leader in Canada for many years and was Premier Sire of the Central National Show in Madison in 1986-87. Warden’s outstanding type ratings for general appearance, dairy character, feet and legs and udders reflects the correctness of his daughters. His daughters dominated the heifer classes in the late 1980’s. He was born in 1977 and was sired by Elevation and out of Hilltopper Astronaut Pamela EX-2E 2* by Paclamar Astronaut. His daughter Mawacres Warden Patricia EX3E 5* was Reserve All-American ThreeYear-Old and All-American Aged Cow in 1990.
Hanoverhill Starbuck EX was born in 1979 and had a great influence on the Holstein breed and once again it was the Elevation x Astronaut cross being out of Anacres Astronaut Ivanhoe VG-DOM 6*. He was a special bull and was the leading sire of All-Americans for seven consecutive years from 1987 to 1993. In 1988 the first Starbuck two-year-olds appeared in the show ring at the Central National show in Madison. Among them was Hanoverhill Star Lulu EX-93 GMD DOM 17* who won the Senior Two-Year-Old class and
was later named All-American. Her dam was Tora Triple Threat Lulu EX-96 GMD DOM 11* the popular Hanover-Hill Triple Threat-Red daughter who was Reserve Grand Champion at the 1981 Royal Winter Fair. In 1989 Dupasquier Starb Winnie EX-3E 8* would win her first AllAmerican honor as a Senior Two-Year-Old. Five years later she was named Grand Champion at the International Holstein Show and was All-American Aged Cow in 1994. In 1990 a special Senior Three-YearOld appeared in the ring at the Central National Holstein Show. C Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada EX-94 DOM developed into a brood cow extraordinaire and was AllAmerican and dam of two All-American produces which included Shoremar S Alicia EX-97. C Merkley Starbuck Whitney EX-96 3* was named All-American Jr. Three-Year-Old in 1991 and would later be named Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 1992 and 1993. Acme Star Lily EX-94-2E 8*, a beautiful cow with “true type” markings, first made her appearance at the International Holstein Show in 1996 and was named Reserve AllAmerican Jr. Three-Year-Old. She would repeat the honor four more times as she was All-American or Reserve in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001. Lily was Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 1998. Starbuck also established himself as a sire of sons. He transmitted his excellence in fat and protein and type traits including correct feet and legs. Starbuck sons who sired All-Americans include Madawaska Aerostar, Hanoverhill Raider-ET, Duregal Astre Starbuck, Browndale Stardust, Marcrest Encore and Hanoverhill Skybuck. Hanoverhill Starbuck excelled to the end of his career and died September 17, 1998 at nineteen years and four months of age, the oldest A.I. bull in history.
Bridon Astro Jet EX was born in 1978 and was a Paclamar Astronaut son from Moeracres Anna Gem EX-92-2E 4* a Roybrook Telstar daughter from the
‘Audrey’ family referring to her granddam Moeracres Hamilton Audrey EX-93 3* who was sired by Glenafton Royal Hamilton and proved to be a valuable brood cow. The Audrey family was bred by Donald Moerschfelder of Ontario and developed by Poverty Hollow Farm in Connecticut. Anna Gem was a member of the 1974 AllCanadian Produce of Dam. Bridon Astro Jet was proven by United Breeders, Inc., Guelph, Ontario. The Astro Jet daughters had outstanding udders, were dairy, stylish and had high milk components. In 1989 Don-A-Dale Jet Crystal EX-4E 3* won the Four-Year-Old class at the Central National Show and was named Reserve Grand Champion. Crystal would be named Reserve All-American in 1989 and also in 1992 as an Aged Cow. In 1991 she was again Reserve Grand Champion at the International Holstein Show where she was edged by another Astro Jet daughter C Rossland Astro Kat EX-97-2E who was named Supreme Champion of the show. A favorite among many was C Taraley Astro Sherry EX-97, an Astro Jet who was named All-American four times as a 4-Year, 5-Year-Old and Aged Cow. Bridon Astro Jet was the Premier Sire at the International Holstein Show 1991-9293 and sired the All-American Get of Sire in 1988, 1991 and 1994.

Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada (EX-94 DOM) was All-American and became a brood cow extraordinaire.
