‘It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.’ ~ JOHN WOODEN
Build the Basics!
Raise your hand if you remember (or even have heard of) John Wooden? “The Wizard of Westwood,” Wooden led the UCLA Men’s Basketball team to 10 National Championships in 12 years, more than any other coach in the NCAA, and an 88game undefeated stretch, that lasted for nearly three years. UCLA was the dominant program in the 1960s and 1970s, and if you played basketball in the decade or two after that, your coach undoubtedly had attended a coaching clinic based on his principles.
If you ever have a few spare moments, do a search for John Wooden’s Eight Keys to Run a Great Practice. His thoughts on how to organize practice in a limited time frame for maximum production. Point #1 on that guide is ‘fundamentals before creativity’. Coach Wooden believed in ‘the teaching of fundamentals, until they are all executed quickly, properly, and without conscious thought, is prerequisite to playing the game.’
By mastering the basics, it gives one the tools to go on and flourish in whatever you’re attempting. Coach Wooden did drills every single day - even with a group of elite athletes that certainly knew how to dribble a basketball and shoot free throws. Reinforcing the fundamentals gave those athletes the foundational security to then get creative.
What does that mean and what on earth does that have to do with the subject matter contained in this magazine? Well, I’m going to go there. The Cowsmo crew has been to spring and summer shows across the continent in 2023. We’ve seen people and cattle incredibly well-prepared that have been named champions and we’re looking forward to seeing that expertise ratcheted up in the fall show season.
But I feel like this year, I’ve seen a greater number of animals and leadpeople (mainly kids) that did not have that fundamental foundation needed to set them up for success. Numerous times this year, I’d either be in the ring taking photos or typing at ringside and see a heifer that I thought, ‘That’s a really good heifer. It’s too bad the judge can’t get a look at her.’ Now,we’ve all had that heifer or cow lead perfectly at home and then lose her mind in the ring, and I understand that, but I’m talking animals that obviously had barely seen a halter before the show.
Along with that, it seemed like there were more young exhibitors leading heifers that were too much for them - a ticket for tears and frustration for everyone involved. I love seeing kids get hooked on showing - I was one of them! But overextending a young person’s skills at an early age is the

quickest way to turn them off for good.
A mentor from many years gone by once told me that my main job with my cattle at the early shows was to teach them that showing is a positive experience: to have my cattle look forward to going to the show; to set them up for success for the rest of their show career. Have you ever watched the drama of someone leading an untrained or too big heifer? The tugging to get them going, then the smacking on the nose once the heifer gets moving ahead too fast - both the heifer and kid having a miserable experience in the ring, and neither one likely to look forward to going again.
Now, before this sounds too preachy, I’ll be the first to admit I’ve thrown heifers on the trailer bound for the district show that were pulled out of the pasture only days before. Guilty! And you know what, usually that was a rotten experience for both the heifers and me. So learn from my mistakes and give your animals and your kids a better chance to succeed.
If necessary, think of it as having a ‘John Wooden’ practice every day or so - hit those fundamentals, teach new things when their minds are fresh, and most importantly, end on a positive note. That time invested at home will lead to wonderful things at the show - smiling kids and happy heifers - exactly the photos we love to take!
Safe travels to all attending the fall shows - whether to exhibit or watch! Christmas comes early for dairy show enthusiasts at Harrisburg, Madison, Louisville and Toronto!

Ack-Lee Holsteins
FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP & FOUNDATION COWS

Faith, Family, Friendship & Foundation Cows - these are the core values for the Ackley family. Located in the heart of small-town East Liberty, Ohio lies a family farm with big dreams and a big passion for the agriculture and dairy industries. Ack-Lee Registered Holsteins began in the early 1960’s when Robert Ackley ventured out on his own, away from the home farm, to see if he could create what he always envisioned. He started milking a group of 50 cows in a double-4 parlor set up with his wife Kathleen by his side. They decided to raise a family, that included son Jay Ackley, who would later return to the farm his father had created upon completing high school graduation. This was just the beginning of what would become a diversified business operation.
Today, Jay and his wife, Kristy, own and operate Ack-Lee Registered Holsteins alongside their two sons, Kyle and Kris. Kyle and his wife Morganne have two children - Kinnley (3) and Maddux (1) - who both already share a deep affinity for the cows and tractors at the farm. A love for family runs deep in the Ackley family and nothing makes grandparents, Jay and Kristy’s, hearts beam with pride more than seeing their grandchildren share the same love they have for the farm and all it entails.
At Ack-Lee Holsteins everyone has their roles, but can jump around and fill in as needed. A typical morning starts in the barn with Jay, Kristy, Kyle and Kris getting things started for the day. They are joined by two employees, Santos and Cristian, who handle the milking, and Erica, who takes care of feeding calves. Once everything is fed and scraped, Jay and Kyle head to the “other side” of the farm to get the day started with the grain operation. Kris and Kristy stay back to breed, treat and oversee the herd. Some days, Kristy leaves to watch her two grandkids, while her daughterin-law, Morganne, teaches. On the grain side, Nick Melvin, Gary Corwin and Jay’s nephew, Brady Ackley help with the crops. Kristy’s nephew, Noah Boots, and father, Doug Boots, feed and scrape at the heifer farm daily. Kris and Kristy also manage all of the treatments and breeding at the heifer farm location as

well. The family laughs, calling Jay the CEO and Kristy the CFO as she handles all the bookwork and organization for the operation.
The Ackleys farm over 4,700 acres of land including 2,200 acres of soybeans, 1,400 acres of corn, 350 acres of wheat and 750 acres of hay. While the dairy keeps the family busy, they also operate several other businesses that keep them diversified. Jay and Kyle are seed dealers for Becks Hybrids out of Indiana, where they move 24,000 units of soybeans and 4,500 units of seed corn. The men of Ackley’s along with Jay’s nephew, cousin, and Nick Melvin also run Ackley Maple Syrup. This operation currently consists of 1,400 taps with a vacuum line and reverse osmosis to make between 400-500 gallons of syrup. It is sold and marketed in a few local produce markets
and out of the home office at the farm. Furthermore, they are also a dealer for LaPierre Maple Syrup Supplies, where they supply other local syrup makers with jugs and supplies needed to market their product. Jay and Kristy also ventured out in 2020 and partnered in a butcher shop, Butcher Bob’s, in LaGrange, IN, with friends Pat Conroy and Phil Topp.
In 2021, the opportunity came about to purchase Kristy’s home farm 10 miles away from the Ack-Lee homestead. This included 246 acres, 3 large cattle barns and a 2500 head finishing hog barn. This location is now the Ack-Lee Heifer Farm and houses over 600 replacement heifers for a large-scale dairy. They also raise and sell all of their service aged bulls to a broad clientele of dairymen. Additionally, they also keep busy selling hay and straw to customers throughout the year.
A recent exciting venture has been the new Boviteq IVF facility that has been built on-site at the dairy. They had been planning on building a new barn to house dry cows and breeding age heifers, but these two groups don’t always generate immediate income. Jay brainstormed on how to make partnering with Boviteq a reality, giving Ohio breeders an option to expand their IVF business and provide them with more options. There were already several other companies with satellite facilities in Ohio, so why not try something new? After several months of research and planning they decided to move forward with building on-site and officially opened doors in May of 2023. Kris and Kristy run the operation alongside Dr. Bryce Slavick and they look forward to providing IVF services to both their dairy and beef clientele.

“We breed for type, with emphasis on feet and legs, dairy strength and udders. If you can get those things on a cow, longevity will follow.”
KRISTY ACKLEY
At the dairy, they are currently milking 170 cows in a double-eight rapid exit herringbone parlor. They house 200 heifers and also have 25 service age bulls on site. They have a 22,000 lbs. herd average, with 4.0% 867F 3.2% 689P. The herd has continued to diversify, consisting of eight Brown Swiss, 25 Jerseys and 137 Holsteins that are housed in a barn made up of free-stalls and box-stalls consisting of sand and deep bedded straw packs. They currently have 25 EX cows and 70 VG with a 109.9 BAA.
“We breed for type, with emphasis on feet and legs, dairy strength and udders. If you can get those things on a cow, longevity will follow. In the breed it has been hard to find a good feet and leg bull, so you have to be very selective if you have a cow with foot and leg issues.” said Kristy. “As far as
udders, we really like the way our Chiefs have been calving in. Doc has been very consistent for us as well.”
When asked about favorite cow families there are a few standouts in the minds of the Ackley Family. “Budjon-JK Emily’s Edair’s daughter, Budjon-JK Atwood Ekira (EX-94), has to top the list for us. She was a barn and show string favorite a few years back,” explained Kristy. “We have a few Doorman daughters from her in the herd that are giving us some pretty calves.

K-Hurst Armani Dazed-ET (EX-94) was another special brood cow that was the dam of K-Hurst Jordy Denali (VG-89CAN). We are fortunate to have Luxor daughters out of Denali owned with the Kuehnert family in Indiana.”
Among the group of standout individuals, there is also a superior group of up-and-coming young cows that the family is currently developing. Exciting young cows in the barn include LoaDe Mede WH Chief Bonita-ET (VG-88), who is a granddaughter of Walnutlawn Abbott Bree-ET (EX-90-CAN 9*). She was Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion at Ohio Spring Show this past spring. She is due back next spring to Legend. Other riveting young cows they are developing are Walnutlawn Silvio Sonata-ET (VG-88), a granddaughter of Walnutlawn McCutchen Summer (EX-95), who is due back next spring to Dempsey and Hodglynn Mirand Halo (owned with Ken and Laura Wood) who is out of an EX Solomon x EX-94 Goldwyn Hazel x EX-92 Dundee Hezbollah. Halo is showing to be a very promising young cow and is also due back next spring to Eye Candy.
Although, all of the previously mentioned cows are special in their own right, there is one cow in particular that is holding the heart of the Ackley family this year. A cow who combines the total package of extreme style, balance, correctness, femininity and pure quality of the mammary system to match. She is Glaustar California All Out-Red (EX-94). “All Out, owned with Planfield Farms, is quickly proving herself to be one of our favorites that we’ve ever had the chance to work with! We picked her up last summer in the Hodglynn’s Finest Sale,” Kristy commented. She has been Grand Champions of both the Holstein and Red shows at Ohio State Fair for the
Glaustar
past two years. In 2022, she earned the HM All-American Red & White 5-Year-Old title after placing 4th at Expo and being Reserve Grand Champion at NAILE. “We have sold embryos and choices out of her and plan to continue her on a flush program after fall show season. She has been a dream to work with and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!”

The milk cows may hold priority of the show string in the Ack-Lee line up, but they also have an impressive group of heifers hoping to join the roster in the future. A few big pedigreed heifers running around the pens include a Randall spring yearling daughter out of Errolea Avalanche Brazil (EX-95-3E-CAN), owned with Hodgylnn and Little Star, due in March to Delta-Lambda. They also have Delta-Lambdas out of both Cheers and Subliminal among the group. “Kris invested in an Altitude maternal sister to Unstoppabull which has been a pretty neat addition to the herd as well,” mentioned Kristy. “Miley Warrior Graceful-Red, owned with Spring, Hart and Plainfield, is a heifer that did make the show string this season and was just Junior Champion of both the Black and Red shows at Ohio State Fair. We are extremely excited about Graceful.”
When looking toward the future there are important goals that the family are striving towards. Looking for new bloodlines and trying to find that “one foundation cow” that will turn out special daughters left and right are ones that top that list. It is the family’s hope that with the addition of the new Boviteq OPU facility that they will be able to make this goal a reality. Having always done a small amount of flushing in previous years, they hope to ramp up their program and increase the number of offspring they can offer in sales to generate a profit off of the pedigrees they have invested in.
With having a lot of changes in the last few years, they intend to focus on the new ventures they have invested in. They plan to continue to work on genetic improvements within the herd, with the goal being to set the next generation up for success. The inspirations are high, the ideas are flowing and the future is bright at Ack-Lee Holsteins!
By Hayleigh Beri K-Hurst Armani Dazed (EX-94) was named Grand Champion at the 2023 Mid-East Spring National Show and is the dam of K-Hurst Jordy Denali-Red, now owned by Pierre Boulet, Ferme Blondin, Clarkvalley Holsteins, Blondin Sires and Fairbanks Cattle Company. She was Grand at the 2023 Quebec Spring Red & White Show and the Supreme Dairy Show in St-Hyacinthe, QC. Express-SMD Halle-TW (VG-86) is a Warrior daughter that recently won the Holstein Futurity at the Ohio State Fair. She is owned by Cindy Howman and housed at Ack-Lee Holsteins. Robeth Holsteins
BUILDING PEDIGREES IN THE GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE!
Red barns, green fields, a white sprawling farmhouse. Coming upon Liberty Hill Farm in Rochester, Vermont is like stepping into a New England postcard. With good reason - there’s been a farm on this acreage since the 1700s, nestled in the Green Hills in central Vermont.

Bob and Beth Kennett purchased the farm in 1979 and are the 5th family to own the property since the 1700s. The striking five-story red barn was built in 1887 by Dr. Charles Emerson, founder of Emerson College in Boston and a distant cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson. It’s built on the footprint of an older, smaller barn from the 1780s, while the lovely Greek Revival-style farmhouse was constructed in 1824.
Both Bob and Beth come from deep farming roots and when they married in 1975, they formed the ‘Robeth’ prefix that has been carried by the Holstein herd ever since. Their son, Dave, graduated from the University of Vermont in 2001, then came home to the farm to take the
Herdsman role. He married Asia in 2012, and they now have four children: Ella (11), Cecilia (7), Leo (5), and Henry (3).
34 cows came along with the farm purchase, and one of those was a Good Plus-84 4-year-old, Bonspecta Minuteman Prene, who developed into an EX-91 4E Gold Medal Dam with almost 300,000M lifetime. Prene goes back directly to Dunloggin breeding and she’s the foundation of their most prolific cow family. They’ve graced these Vermont hills since the 1950s and most of the herd’s Excellent cows trace back to her. Over the years, they’ve added more cattle from breeders they admire, most recently from the well-known VT-Pond View herd. “Scott Langmaid did a great job developing those cow families and the kind of cow we admire,” praises Dave.
The Kennetts have improved and added to the operation over the years with a new heifer barn and in 2007 they added 59 stall sand-bedded free stall, where the
high production group lives, in addition to the 51 tie-stall barn with a pipeline, where all the cows are still milked.
Bob and Dave do the bulk of the work with the cows. Dave feeds calves and breeds all cows while Bob does a lot of the outside work, haying and repairs with help from nephew, Tony. They have two Hispanic employees that do the milking and barn cleaning. They crop 330 acres with 120 acres in corn and the rest in grass for hay and silage.
When they first classified the herd, Bob and Beth walked away with just two Very Good cows. From that humble start, they built a tremendous all-Holstein herd that has earned the Progressive Breeder Registry award for 29 years. The herd averages 25,000 lbs of milk on 2X milking and has a BAA 110.9% with 40 EX, 50 VG, 20 GP.
They strive for a high scored cows with show potential and love strong cow families. They don’t chase the ‘hot’ young bull, but tend to use one or two bulls across
the whole herd. “Sometimes you have to wait to find the next game changer or the great bull of a generation, but those ‘brand name’ bulls have generated our most successful cows,” notes Dave. “We have bred 135 Excellent cows and almost all are from bulls you know by one name: Durham, Shottle, Goldwyn, Atwood. We’re a bit old-fashioned, I guess. We’re not worried about putting bulls in stud or getting the highest genomic numbers. Our passion in breeding cows is building great pedigrees,” asserts Dave.
Most of those EX cows come from the ‘P’ family started by Prene, and now the herd boasts six EX-94 cows. The first of those was Robeth Durham Pixie, who is a family favorite, and has been joined at that EX-94 score by her daughter, Robeth Goldwyn Pippa. In recent years, the Kennetts have begun flushing more with those donor dams being the EX-94 cows. The eggs go into recipients in a large dairy in New York, and the calves on the ground and the pregnancies to come are exciting, with King Docs, Delta-Lambdas, Warriors. In fact, there are 65 King Docs in the heifer pens right now!
Not surprisingly with the inventory on hand and coming, the idea was floated to have a sale. When classifier Adam Liddle
was there last August to score the herd, he saw lots of cattle everywhere. “Adam said we would breathe a sigh of relief after a sale and we’d have more space. And frankly, anytime you flush a lot, you need to create some cash flow to pay for it all,” remarked Dave. “We know that cows don’t live forever, and we wanted some babies out of those EX-94 cows, but now we’re getting squeezed for space.”
The plan is to sell about 100 head - 75 of Robeth-bred cattle, and 25 head from other New England herds on Saturday,

April 27th, 2024 at The Legacy of Liberty Hill Sale. The event will be managed by The Alliance (Abbott & Hill). They’ve always sold groups of young cows and bred heifers privately, and have consigned to the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale, Cobleskill and Cornell sales. They still have a robust herd bull market - selling about 50 bulls a year to herds in Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Now they want to take it to the next level with a sale of their own. They’ve got 30 heifers due to calve in March so that they
We have bred 135 Excellent cows and almost all are from bulls you know by one name: Durham, Shottle, Goldwyn, Atwood. We’re a bit old-fashioned, I guess. We’re not worried about putting bulls in stud or getting the highest genomic numbers. Our passion in breeding cows is building great pedigrees.”
DAVE KENNETT ON THE ROBETH BREEDING PHILOSOPHYare 50-60 days fresh for the sale. “Down the line, it probably won’t be our only sale,” notes Dave. “
“I hope it isn’t still snowing on April 27th,” laughs Dave, but the date allows Vermont youth to purchase project animals before the ownership deadline of May 1st. “We all grew up in 4-H, and it’s important to us that the sale provides the opportunity for Vermont kids to get an animal they can show in 2024,” comments Dave.
Speaking of showing, it’s something the family, particularly Dave, has always enjoyed. He had a lot of fun as a junior exhibitor with Robeth Mandel Winnie, who cleaned up in New England as a heifer, then went to Louisville as a milking yearling in 1999, where she won the junior and open shows. She was a VG-89 2-yearold, then scored EX-92 2nd calf and made 40,000 lbs. of milk. She really ignited the
show bug for Dave, and it’s something they continue to this day traveling their county fair, the New England Summer Show, and the Big E every year.
Their current show queen would be Robeth Atwood Venus EX-94, who won the Lifetime Production Cow class at the New England Summer Show, and was Reserve Grand Champion at their Addison County Fair. On top of that, she’s a remarkable flush cow who made 20 King Doc embryos last year, and lots of Tatoo and Hulu *RC eggs just recently. She is due to Tatoo in the spring.

The Kennetts’ love for deep pedigrees and powerful cows was nurtured by many mentors along the way. Dave mentions just a few:
Tink Camp - ‘He was the master of developing the Golden Cross, like Valiant x Elevation, and now we love to find a pattern like that and go with it, such as Atwood x Sid and currently, Doc on Diamondback!”
Scott Langmaid - “To see the strings of cattle he would bring to our state show, he was really an inspiration”
Gerry Audet of Lake Home Farm - “I saw his row of Hanover Hill Starbuck daughters at the county fair as a young kid. I went home and begged Dad to get some Starbuck semen. It was our Starbuck daughters that yielded our first PBR award!”

In addition to the dairy herd, the Kennetts have diversified into agri-tourism. Beth has run a highly-successful ‘Country inn’ on the farm since 1984. Guests can stay, do some family-friendly chores on the farm, explore the area and enjoys Beth’s wonderful meals morning and evening. Asia started giving farm tours a few years ago, and are scheduled to coincide with daily chores to allow guests the opportunity to experience daily farm life. Tours last an hour and a half, and are also quite popular. “Mom can have a house full and then four or five cars pull in for a tour - it can get to be a yard full,” says Dave.
With all that activity and a young family, the days can be long, but the months fly by. But it’s that young family that keeps the Kennetts moving forward. Dave is proud of both the legacy and the opportunity they are providing for their kids. “Our future depends on our youth, here at our farm, in the purebred cattle business and in the dairy industry at large. It’s the youth that drives the passion! My kids all participate in pee wee showmanship and Ella really has a passion to show. CC is magical, as she helps grandma in the kitchen, and the boys love Grampa’s tractors. We are planting the seed for continued success!”

Lambert Run Farm
BUILDING A PUREBRED POWERHOUSE!
When the Lambert family of Lambert Run Farm in Norridgewock, Maine wanted move into the registered dairy cattle business, they did the oldfashioned way - they got hooked in the show ring and went out to buy good registered cattle to replace their grades. For Garrett Lambert and his partner Matt Hartle, the upgrading path has led to some outstanding results at the shows!

Lambert Run Farm is a family operation, and Garrett’s dad, Timothy, took over the reins in 1982. They milked all grade Holsteins, but when Garrett and his brother Nicholas started in 4-H, the family purchased their first registered Holstein, then eventually converted the herd to all registered cows from there. “My dad always liked good cows, but not necessarily the paperwork that comes with registered cows. Once we took that on, we started improving the herd.”
Today, Garrett, his partner Matt Hartle, and Garrett’s brother, Nicholas all work on the farm. They currently milk 150 Holstein and Guernsey cows, with 400
consists of 800 acres, planted mainly in corn and grass hay.
Garrett and Matt met at a cow show five years ago, where Matt worked for Juniper Farm. Originally from Washington State, Matt is a big fan of the Jersey breed, but the little brown cows haven’t nudged their way onto the farm yet. He began working for Juniper as a part of their show crew at Eastern States, then was hired on at the farm, where he worked with that elite herd everyday.

They both still enjoy showing and exhibit at numerous fairs in Maine every summer and have most of the show cattle at home. “I’ve got pens everywhere and every which way,” Garrett laughs, in order to separate animals out to get the proper feed. The show cows are kept in a smaller area away from the large milking herd.
Maine Crush Maizie EX-92. Bred by the Hussey family of Limington, Maine, Maizie is backed by five VG & EX dams from the Brigeen Dundee R A Marcy EX-92 family. To date, she has two 1st Grade daughters at the farm. They’ve always been big supporters of Maine and New England breeders, and many of the animals brought into the herd come from the region. That includes the members of the Guernsey breed that first made an appearance on the farm when a friend wanted to sell a couple of heifers. Digging a little deeper, they found out that they went back to Springdale breeding from the Whitcomb herd in nearby Waldo, Maine, and thought they would be good buying. Garrett thinks the Guernseys are a breed on the comeback trail, and his first experience led to him buying more. Last year, he, Matt and Philip Hauks exhibited the All-American Yearling in Milk, Prairie Moon Fame Addison-ETV. She sports an All-American pedigree with her

dam, Prairie Moon L Abriella-ET EX-91, the 2017 Reserve All-American Senior 2-Year-Old, and her granddam, Prairie Moon Y Antebella EX-92, the Reserve AllAmerican 4-Year-Old in 2015. The family has produced numerous All-American nominated animals, and they look to keep developing from this high-type pedigree.
Another Prairie Moon heifer owned by the same threesome - Prairie Moon Java Lavender-ETV, was recently 1st fall calf, Junior Champion, and Supreme Champion Heifer at the Iowa State Fair and have the owners excited for the fall shows. They also own Knapps Indian TN Irish Whiskey, the 2nd winter calf at the show. These heifers, along with a few other national level show animals are housed in Iowa at Maxx Boarding, under the care of Grayson Gahring.
At home, they’re showing the home bred LRF James Dean Taylor, a winter calf that has claimed a number of champion rosettes at the local shows. She is out of

Also at Maxx Boarding is Lin-Crest Warrior Macey, 1st winter yearling at the Iowa State Fair and Iowa Holstein State Show, owned by Garrett and Matt. She is another heifer that is looking at the bigger stage in Madison or Louisville this fall, as is a fresh Junior 2-year-old, Hannans Warrior Candace-Red, and a spring calf, LambertRun Diamondback Candy.
Garrett is a staunch agricultural fair supporter, and contributes some volunteer time to the cause. He’s on the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs, is also the Livestock Superintendent at Skowhegan Fair, and the Assistant Dairy Superintendent at the Fryeburg Fair.
Away from the shows, Garrett used to be active with Quarter Horses in the
sports of cattle penning and sorting. Now he is breeding Australian Shepherd dogs, which he jumped into about four years ago, and has enjoyed learning the pedigrees of another species. He promotes the breed as being one of the

But even with that diversification, the dairy cows are number one at LambertRun. Garrett has been purchasing about 15-20 show-type, purebred cattle for each of the last three years. They have moved into doing classification for the show cattle - about 25-30 head each time. Now, with that foundation in place, Garrett says they are going to start flushing more intensively and continue to build those pedigrees and develop more beautiful home bred heifers. Whether on the Maine Fair run or looking to the national shows, Garrett and Matt want to be competitive with some of the breeds’ best!
By Kathleen O’KeefeMASTER BREEDER AWARD
TIM & SHARYN ABBOTT, ENOSBURG, VT
The Master Breeder Award recognizes a person who has achieved significant success in breeding Holstein cows. Tim and Sharyn Abbott of Enosburg, Vermont are synonymous with success, having built and sold St. Jacobs ABC, started their prefix and farm Borderview Genetics, and managing some of the most prestigious sales in the industry. Their prefixes and partnerships have ranked up numerous All-American and All-Canadians, with most recently attaining the coveted Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2022 and 2018. Their time at St. Jacobs really changed the landscape for bull studs marketing to breeders emphasizing cow families and breeding establishments as the differentiation from larger studs. Their successes at St. Jacobs led to eventually selling to ABS Global and propelling them to buy a farm in northern Vermont to house, raise and breed from their own prefix, Borderview Genetics. Their work in sale management has been important in helping breeders carry out great sales that honor their cow families and the people behind them and will cement the Abbott name in the history books of dairy cattle marketing.
RALPH GUSHEE MEMORIAL CARETAKER AWARD JOANNE HILL, BRISTOL, VT

The Ralph Gushee Memorial Caretaker Award recognizes a person who exhibits passion towards the care of dairy cattle, the people involved, and the dairy industry as a while. This is a unique opportunity to give thanks to those who excel in animal and farm care and who may not always find themselves in the limelight. Joanne Hill of Four-Hills Farm in Bristol, VT is the 2022 winner of this award. Joanne manages the day-to-day care of all the calves born on Four-Hills Farm. She’s often the first person a newborn calf sees, and she makes sure they get everything they need to be successful on the farm. Joanne spends her days managing the seven robotic calf feeders each with about 30 calves on it, backgrounding anywhere from 12-35 newborn bottle calves. In addition to her normal calf care, she also cares for the weaned calves. While Joanne spends most of her time with the calves, she’s also a big part of the crew who “holds down the fort” during crop and show seasons. She makes sure that the tasks continue to get done and is always willing to give the crop crew rides when needed or drop off equipment for them. Joanne often knows more about what is going on around the farm than anyone else. She uses her “says off” to go watch the show crew and is always close by to grab a halter or anything else that may be needed. There is not a chance the farm could manage without her.
LEE SALONEN OUTSTANDING JUNIOR AWARD CYNTHIA SHAW, OXFORD, MA
The Lee Salonen Outstanding Holstein Junior Exhibitor Award recognizes New England Junior Holstein Exhibitors for their efforts and interest in all aspects of the Holstein industry. Recipients of this award have a high level of participation in junior programs, excel in herdsmanship, are knowledgeable of their cattle, have demonstrated leadership qualities, and have a sustained commitment to the industry.
Cynthia Shaw of Oxford, Massachusetts is the 2022 winner of the Lee Salonen Outstanding Holstein Junior Exhibitor Award. She joined the New England Holstein dairy bowl team in 2019 and attended her first Holstein USA convention in 2021 where she competed in the senior dairy jeopardy contest. Cynthia was also a senior dairy jeopardy contestant at the 2022 national convention held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was a member of her college’s National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America chapter during her second year of veterinary technician school at Mount Wachusett Community College. During her four years in 4-H, her biggest highlights were representing Massachusetts at the Big E (20152021), being a county ambassador (2017-2021), and representing Massachusetts as a national 4-H dairy conference delegate in 2018. Once her years as a junior member are over, Cynthia wants to give back to the New England Junior Programs as a way of saying thank for encouraging her passion for dairy bowl, breeding and improving her own small herd, and pushing her towards pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. She wants to help grow the junior programs in New England and as many others have before her, she wants to get youth excited to learn more about the dairy industry and share her love for the Holstein cow.

NEW ENGLAND JUNIOR HOLSTEIN REPORT
With fall shows right around the corner, our junior members are eager to get their animals out at the upcoming National shows! Leading up to the numerous shows held in New England in the summertime, the junior Holstein members have been having successes at the National level outside of the show ring as well. Last October, the New England Holstein Association held their annual meetings in Fairlee, Vermont where we had a great turnout of junior contest participants. At the convention, the annual junior meeting also took place where we elected a new executive board, consisting of the following: President, Charlie Haynes, VT; Vice President, Lorryn Trujillo, VT; Secretary, Keenan Thygesen, VT; Treasurer, Sydney Bullard, ME; Historian, Trevor Clapp, CT; and Reporter, Katelyn Poitras, MA.
The participants of the junior contests competed in dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy and written knowledge exam as well as prepared public speaking. The teams and individuals to compete at the National Holstein Convention were also chosen. The senior dairy bowl team consisted of Dan Clapp, Trevor Clapp (team captain), Cynthia Shaw, and Lorryn Trujillo. While the junior team had members of Will Bullard, Dominic Crochier (team captain), Erin Judd and Savannah Judd. Six individuals were chosen to attend as dairy jeopardy contestants. Keenan Thygesen and Katelyn Poitras as seniors, Sydney Bullard as an intermediate, with Gerrit Sneller, Aubrey Sneller, and Madelyn Poitras as Juniors. We also were happy to have three individuals compete in the prepared public speaking contest at Nationals with Sydney Bullard in the intermediate division, and Gerrit Sneller and Savannah Judd both in the junior division.

The fourteen members selected to compete at Nationals spent the months leading up to convention studying and practicing and their hard work paid off! Both dairy bowl teams competed very well, respectively. The junior dairy bowl team received the J. George & Anna Smith National Dairy Bowl Sportsmanship Award for their division! In the prepared public speaking contest, a great job was done by all three participants and it was Savannah Judd who broke through to claim the Third Place Overall with her speech “Six Major Dairy Breeds.” New England also sent in submissions for the Traditional Scrapbook, Digital Scrapbook, and Banner contests. The traditional scrapbook placed second, the digital scrapbook placed fourth, and the banner was a wonderful testament to the hard work Trevor Clapp put towards the creation. A great time was had by all and we made lots of friends from across the country!
After the conclusion of the National Holstein Convention, some of our other junior members attended the New England Summer Show held in Lyndonville, VT. Sara and John Carpenter of Vermont claimed Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion honors with Petherton Morgan Scarlett. Wyatt Simpson also had a successful day with his Junior Two-Year-Old, Fairmont Americana-Red, claiming Honorable Mention Grand and Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show. Reserve Intermediate Champion went to Dylan Slack with his Junior Three-Year-Old, Show-Bros Warrior Trix-Red. While Junior Champion honors was a clean sweep by member Justine Allyn. Junior Champion on her Spring Yearling, Luncrest Unix Bright; Reserve Junior Champion on her Summer Yearling, Allyndale Total Chaos; and Honorable Mention to her Spring Calf, Allyndale Miss Lah-Tee-Dah-ET. Congratulations to all junior members who exhibited at the show!
At the Summer Show, Junior members are also given the opportunity to participate in a three-part contest, The New England Youth Showcase, points are totaled from judging contest scores, showmanship placings, and written knowledge exam scores. The overall winners for 2023 are: Senior, Madison Knight; Intermediate, Natalie Michaud; and Ella Purchase as the Junior winner.

With the conclusion of this article, the recent events and contests are up to date as we roll into fall shows. We are looking forward to the annual New England Junior Meeting and contests and hope you will join us! This year’s New England Convention will be held October 28th & 29th in Auburn, Maine, more information can be found on the NE Holstein website.
By Katelyn Poitras, Junior PresidentA Lifetime of Passion
MILLBORNE FARM ~ GRANBY, CT
If you’re a lucky human you find the love of a lifetime - it may be another person or it may be a lifelong passion. For P. Morey Miller, that passion is purebred dairy cattle, and specifically, purebred dairy cattle that can parade around a show ring. The first flame of that passion was fanned when he was 15 years old and exhibited the Junior Champion at the Northeast PA Championship Show, and it’s burned brightly ever since.
Morey first loved the Holstein breed while growing up on the family farm in Towanda, Pennsylvania with their Royal Haven herd. When it came time to further his education, he headed off to Penn State University where he majored in Dairy Science. His love of taking care of cows was evident, and he was steered in the right direction by his professors who suggested he should apply to veterinary school. Though his uncle advised against it - ‘You don’t want to do that. You’ll never get any sleep again.’ - he had the backing of his mother. She was a teacher and fully supported his application in 1968 to the Cornell Vet School where he was accepted and subsequently obtained his degree. Upon graduation, he received a job offer from a multi-person, large and small animal practice in Granby, Connecticut. From his time traveling on the tanbark trail, Morey knew there were good dairy herds in that north-central area of the state, such as Charles Stroh’s Hilltop Farm, so that location appealed to him. Eventually, he became a partner in the clinic and settled into a long career as a veterinarian, while always keeping his hand in the Registered Holstein business. In 1974, a pretty dairy farm in Granby came up for sale, and it seemed the ideal opportunity for Morey to establish his own herd in Connecticut. The barn
had 40 stanchion stalls, which were converted to tie-stalls, and Morey began filling the stalls with Holsteins he owned that were still housed at the family farm in PA, which was now being run by his older brother. Once those cows were in place, he began his journey of breeding his Millborne herd.
The farm came with 38 acres, with some of that used for pasture and some to raise hay and forage for the herd. Additional acreage is rented to produce more hay and feed for which the planting and harvesting is hired out to custom operators. Some additional feed is also purchased. The barn, which holds 43 cows in tie-stalls, was updated this past summer when a local Amish crew did all the work in a remarkable two days.
With his full-time career as a veterinarian, Morey always had a herd manager tackling the work and details on the farm. For the past ten years, that role has been filled by Paul Saunders, who Morey praises as having done a great job at Millborne. “Paul does all the day-to-day work on the farm and really does a wonderful job with the herd. Paul & I see things the same way and look at cows the same way - we both like great type!,” says Morey.
Also a fan of the show ring, Paul has been buying into some of Morey’s best cows. He’s also invested in other cattle, including a calf purchased from the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Sale from Todd Whittier. That calf, Whittier-Farms Solomon Lunge is now EX-94, and is the dam of a VG-88 Defiant and a VG86 Advent, both of whom carry Paul’s Maple-MP prefix. The Defiant, Maples-MP Defiant Luna, was Grand Champion, Best Udder, and Champion Bred & Owned of
the Connecticut State Holstein Show in June. Morey says that Paul has bought the right pedigrees and now has six or seven really nice cows in the barn. That’s saying quite a lot as the whole herd (31 Holsteins and 12 Guernseys) are all scored VG or EX. The Holstein herd carries a BAA of 112% with 12 EX cows, while 6 of the 12 Guernseys (more about them in a bit) are Excellent. They’ve had good success with Solomon, Diamondback, Monterey, Doorman, McCutchen, and Unstopabull in the herd, and have been Sidekick, Master, Fitters Choice, and Unix daughters in the heifer pens.
Morey and Paul had a very successful state show, in addition to Paul’s Grand Champion. Morey is excited about the fall show season for Millborne Sidekick Trudy, who won the fall calf class and was named Junior Champion, and for Clees Diamondback Claire, who won the winter yearling class. Claire was 2nd earlier this year in a big class at the Northeast AllBreeds Spring Holstein Show.

In the past 20 years, Morey’s name has been announced often at high-level Guernsey shows. What persuaded this tried and true Holstein breeder to open his doors to Guernseys? His youngest daughter, Ashley, who had spotted a potential purchase on the UCONN Calf Sale. Morey remembers, “She said, ‘Dad, there’s a calf that probably won’t bring a lot and I’d like to buy her. What I didn’t tell you is that this calf is a Guernsey.’ I went with her to the sale, bought the calf, and brought her home. I loved the calf and her temperament, and I told Ashley her calf needed a partner!”

Morey now wanted a show calf, but he knew he needed some advice in learning about this ‘new to him’ breed. He contacted Seth Johnson who he knew had a great eye for Guernseys and an encyclopedic knowledge about pedigrees. That first venture turned out well as the calf Seth found for him ended up Reserve All-American! With that start,
more are better’ phase of building the Guernsey segment of the herd.
The astute purchase of R Way Royal Oak Faye, a good heifer that became an EX94 brood cow, paved the way for many champion rosettes to return to Granby. Faye herself in the early 2000’s was a manytime winner at national Guernsey shows in Madison, Louisville, and Harrisburg, as well as the NY State Fair and NY Spring Show. Her Tiller son, Millborne Tiller Fayes Fame, is still one of the highest type bulls in the breed. Her granddaughter, Millborne Hillpoint S Fiesta-ET EX-93, was the Unanimous All-American 4-Year-Old in 2015.

Morey feels that Guernseys get a bad rap from some people who have never actually worked with the breed. “They have some critics that say they aren’t hardy, but some of my Guernseys spend half the winter outside. I think the endurance of the breed has really improved. I’ve always been preaching
about improving the hind legs and now we’re starting to see much better quality there too,” he notes.
The newborn calves can take longer to get up than other dairy breeds, but he considers that a quirk of the breed, not a sign of weakness, as they are healthy calves. That gentle temperament that won him over from the very first calf is still evident, and he vouches for their intelligence. “They have a great memory for any kind of mis-treatment and absolutely back away from people they don’t trust or like, but other than that, they are very easy to work with,” he comments. One notable exception to this gentleness was the Fiesta line. “She was one tough hombre, and that aggressiveness has passed on through that branch of the Faye family,” he observes. Fiesta is now at Springhill in Ohio and, according to reports, is still as hard-nosed as ever. Perhaps the biggest challenge Morey faces in mating his Guernsey herd is

“Guernseys have some critics that say they aren’t hardy, but some of my Guernseys spend half the winter outside. I think the endurance of the breed has really improved. I’ve always been preaching about improving the hind legs and now we’re starting to see much better quality there too.
MOREY MILLERMillborne Hillpoint S Fiesta-ET (EX-93) was Unanimous All-American 4-Year-Old in 2015 and has numerous descendants that had successful show careers for Morey and others. Millborne HP Drone Finley, 1st summer yearling and Reserve Junior Champion at the Guernsey Gold Showcase 2023, and a descendant of Fiesta.
that there are very few high-type bulls available. “It seems many of the AI studs, if they carry Guernsey bulls at all, collect about 1500 units from a bull as a young sire, then get rid of him. If the bull turns out well, the semen is in short supply very quickly,” he notes. “We’re seeing that with Drone now, for example.” He’s using Jack Daniels, Latimer, and Alex (a Fame son) in the herd now.
Morey has a lot of respect for Randy Knapp of Knapps Guernseys and will call
for his thoughts and advice on bulls and pedigrees. He currently has two EX-93 cows from Knapp breeding in the herd. Guernseys pointed to the fall shows include Millborne Alex Bianca VG-87, a junior 3-year-old that was Intermediate Champion at the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Guernsey Show this year, and Millborne HP Drone Finley, a summer yearling that has was Junior Champion at the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Guernsey Show, and Reserve Junior Champion at the Guernsey Gold Showcase.
Both the Holsteins and Guernseys are marketed through word of mouth, consigning to sales, and some print advertisements with Cowsmopolitan, though Morey admits that he isn’t too anxious to get rid of them because he loves breeding and building cow families.

After a 50-year career as a veterinarian, Morey retired, and though he’s had a few back problems recently, he’s ‘upright and out in the barn everyday. Now 82, he remains steadfastly optimistic about the future of high-type registered dairy cattle. “I’m pretty convinced that there are a lot of people out there, not currently
on a farm, that enjoy showing cattle and they are able to finance it. Our business will always attract new people all the time because it’s an emotional undertaking to breed purebred cattle.”
As for the future of his small Connecticut operation, time will tell. His two daughters are still in agriculture - his oldest daughter, Emily, works for FSA in New York and still enjoys showing cattle. His younger daughter, Ashley, is married to John Collins, and is very involved with the Collins family dairy farm. He thinks very highly of his herdman Paul, who he says is invaluable with all the things he does on the farm and would like to see him continue to build his herd.
Whatever the next chapter holds, Morey also feels it’s important to recognize those that have helped along the way, including Paul, Tim Coon, and Seth Johnson to name a few. “It’s not my success; it’s our success. There are people behind me that enables my success and we need to recognize those connections.”

RICHFORD PINGERLY VALENTINE NAMED 2023 CANADIAN MILKING SHORTHORN COW OF THE YEAR
Richford Pingerly Valentine was unveiled as the 2023 Cow of the Year at the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society’s Field Day and Annual Meeting, hosted by the Richardson family of St. Marys, Ontario. The Society’s Cow of the Year Award is determined by votes registered by CMSS members.

Valentine, classified Excellent 92-2E, was bred by Don Richardson of Richford Farms. She was subsequently a consignment to the 2016 National Milking Shorthorn Sale, where she was purchased by Oceanbrae Farms of Belmont, Prince Edward Island. According to her breeder Don, “Valentine was the sort of heifer that we thought would excel in any herd, so we were confident consigning her to the National Sale. We were glad to hear that the Oceanbrae herd had purchased her, as they had previously purchased cattle from us.”
Fred Barrett of Oceanbrae Farms noted that “Valentine caught our attention, as she traced back to our Oceanbrae Lady cow family. As we had success in the past with cattle from the Richford herd, we felt comfortable purchasing her for our herd.”
Richford Pingerly Valentine has produced 54,795 kgs of milk in five completed lactations at 3.7% fat and 3.3% protein. In early 2023, she completed her best lactation to-date, producing 13,118 kgs of milk in 305 days, the third largest All-Time milk record for Canadian Milking Shorthorns in Mature Cow age class. This is despite Valentine having to temporarily relocate to a foster herd while the Barrett family rebuilt their dairy barn following Hurricane Fiona in September 2022. Valentine was relocated to Red Oak Farms in Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI, where the Versteeg family cared for her and six of her herdmates until the Barretts resumed milking in March 2023.
Cow of the Year isn’t the only recent accolade Valentine has earned. She was also named Grand Champion of the 2022 CMSS Virtual Show in September 2022 after placing first in the Mature Cow Class. Valentine is sired by the Australian sire Treeton Pingerly, the #1 LPI sire marketed by Semex.

Runner-up for 2023 Cow of the Year was Emadale LSC Taco Maid EX-90-2E, bred by Doug Wherry of Oshawa, Ontario and owned by Sheldon Richardson of St. Marys, Ontario.
Both Valentine and Taco Maid are excellent examples of balanced, productive Canadian Milking Shorthorns succeeding for dairy producers across Canada. For more information on the breed, visit the CMSS website at www.milkingshorthorn.ca.
