President’s Message

As the famous rock band AC\DC once said “Are You Ready For A Good Time”, 2023 is off to a fun start!! Record snow and rain has really blessed California as we have been in a horrible drought for a few years. It’s only fitting that we got the record weather following in step with the record milk prices we saw last year and the demand for quality cattle still continues and it shows!!

We kicked this year off in Reno with our State Convention held at the Peppermill Casino. The Stanislaus Holstein club hosted and did a great job. We enjoyed a fantastic sale and got to enjoy a fun-filled weekend with fellow Holstein breeders and industry supporters. The weekend ended with a tremendous Senior Banquet where we got to honor Frank and Diane Borba with the 2022 Doug Maddox Senior Breeder of the Year Award and Johnny Machado for the AJ Quist Young Breeder of the Year Award. A big congratulations goes out to these breeders on a milestone award!

Like I mentioned earlier, God blessed our state with some much-needed rain and snow! However, we were not ready for the amount that was brought and the aftermath that followed. Southern California got hit with massive flooding that caused the State Association to jump to a Plan B for this year’s State Show location. With only a few week’s notice, the association, along with the help of a few key members, managed to get our show relocated to Turlock. I couldn’t be more proud of our directors and office manager for stepping up to make this year’s State Show a memorable one. This year’s judge, Tyler Reynolds, sorted through large, quality classes of Holsteins from all over our great state and placed this year’s champions!! There was a record number of Red & Whites that participated in both classes this year. Congratulations to Frank and Diane Borba and Frank and Carol Borba on exhibiting the Champion cow of both shows!

California also did not disappoint in the Junior and Open divisions at the Western Spring National Show in Utah in May. Many class winners came from California in both the Holstein and Red & White classes!

In the Junior world, our young people continue to set the bar as the teams to beat at the national level. Whether it be in the show ring or competing in Dairy Bowl, our youth are a bright light for our state and industry. I want to wish our juniors that will be competing at the National Convention good luck! Our juniors are coached by the best in my opinion! A big thank you goes out to Kirsten Areias for all her dedication to our youth.

National Director’s Message

Holstein Association USA has released results of a research study called “A Million Reasons Why Confirmation Matters”. This study, conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Bewley, uses a data base of 1 million cows to show that first lactation energy c;orrected milk and lifetime ECM are directly correlated to functional type. Most of us already knew this, but certain traits such as rear udder height and width have a big influence on production. Using the classification program can identify areas that need improvement in your herd. Adding these areas to sire selection along with your current criteria could improve production and profit. It has been a very busy and interesting year in California. Some things have been business as usual. The show season included two tremendous Junior Shows, multiple county fairs, the California State show, and a contingent that traveled to Utah for the Western National. The quality of the animals exhibited was outstanding, and the opportunity to fellowship with so many friends made the Covid days seem so far in the past. Congratulations to everyone involved.

I would also like to congratulate Kylie Konyn for being a Distinguished Junior Member semifinalist, and both Kiara Konyn and Mykei Mull as Young Distinguished Junior Member finalists. They, along with the dairy bowl teams and the rest of the California junior members competing at the National Convention in Lexington, will represent us well.

In California the record setting rain and snowfall levels were not so usual. On the plus side, most reservoirs are full and water availability is not a problem. The down side is the flooding, particularly in the Tulare area,that has caused extreme damage to the dairy industry. The Tulare Lake was once the largest body of fresh water west of the Mississippi. It has been dry for about 120 years, but the heavy storms and continuing runoff from snow melt have resurrected it to 180 square miles. Some projections say it could reach 260 square miles. 100,000 head of dairy cows had to be evacuated immediately, and much of the crop land that was used to grow feed is under water. How this will affect the total industry in California is uncertain, but for those in the middle of this disaster it has been devastating.

It has been a busy time at Holstein Association USA as we prepare for the 137th Annual Meeting and National Holstein Convention. Amidst the flurry of activities and anticipation surrounding this momentous event, Holstein USA’s unwavering commitment to animal identification and classification stands as a testament to its pioneering role in the industry. As we gather to celebrate the rich history and remarkable achievements of the Holstein breed in Louisville, Kentucky in June, it is important to recognize the integral role animal traceability, identification, and classification have played in the breed’s success.

In the ever-evolving world of agriculture, staying ahead of the curve is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of our food production systems. Holstein Association USA has long been recognized as a pioneer in animal identification and classification. Through collaboration, the leveraging of cutting-edge technologies, and the implementation of forward-thinking strategies, Holstein Association USA is helping pave the way for enhanced animal management.

Dairy farmers care about our environment and sustainability, and animal identification has a very important role in that conversation. By embracing technological advancements like RFID tags, the association also ensures reliable tracking and traceability, ultimately bolstering consumer confidence in the safety and quality of dairy products. It is clear to Holstein Association USA and the farmers we serve that traceability has always been and will continue to be foundational to the success and sustainability of our entire food system.

Since 2017, Holstein Association USA has collaborated with the American Guernsey Association to provide classification services for Guernsey cattle. Building upon this successful partnership, the association has expanded its multi-breed classification program by joining forces with other breed associations, most recently, including the American Milking Shorthorn Society and the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association.

This remarkable expansion has been made possible by the excellent work of Holstein Association USA’s classification team, who will now be classifying five dairy breeds: Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, Milking Shorthorn, and Red and White Holstein. This collaborative and progressive initiative solidifies Holstein Association USA’s pioneering role in advancing the dairy industry. By pooling our resources and expertise, we can all achieve more and contribute to the overall growth and advancement of the entire dairy community.

Traceability, identification, and classification play a pivotal role in maximizing the profit and potential of every Holstein herd. NorBert Colby Connie, the cow that recently broke the record for the most lifetime milk production, serves as a shining example of the exceptional profitability achieved by U.S. Registered Holsteins. Connie achieved this incredible feat with her lifetime milk production record of 486,300 pounds of milk, 27,062 pounds of fat, and 17,737 pounds of protein through her latest completed lactation. Connie has calved again and is continuing to add to the record total.

Connie’s extraordinary accomplishment follows closely on the heels of Chrome-View Charles 3044, who set the previous record earlier this year with a remarkable lifetime milk production of 478,200 pounds. The fact that two cows have achieved this feat in such a short span of time is a powerful testament to the incredible capabilities and immense profit potential of U.S. Registered Holsteins.

Holstein USA members will have much to celebrate when they gather in Lexington, Kentucky from June 23- 27. The National Holstein Convention provides an opportunity for dairy farmers, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to come together and recognize the pivotal role played by the association in advancing the dairy industry. With its pioneering efforts, innovative strategies, and collaborative partnerships, Holstein Association USA has revolutionized the way we manage and maximize the potential of Holstein herds.

It is a time to reflect on the incredible capabilities and immense profit potential of U.S. Registered Holsteins, exemplified by record-breaking cows like Nor-Bert Colby Connie and Chrome-View Charles 3044. As Holstein enthusiasts gather in Kentucky, we not only celebrate the Holstein cow but also the profound impact that Holstein Association USA continues to make in shaping a sustainable and efficient future for the entire dairy community.

Welcome readers of the 2023 California Holstein Association Holstein News annual magazine! Hard to believe it’s already June… it’s been a busy and enjoyable first half of the year!

We kicked off 2023 with a ‘destination’ State Convention in Reno, which proved to be a fun change and excellent venue. The sale was well attended and supported by consignors and buyers, and post-Covid youth participation is on the rise. Although the State Show had a late venue change, it was a success for all- with great quality and numbers. The Youth Challenge Contest included more juniors who enjoyed friendly competition with the best young dairy showmen from around the state. A huge thank you to all of the members & volunteers who assisted with these events, and gave their time and efforts in support of our organization. Thank you also to our allied industry sponsors for their continued support.

The following pages showcase the excellence and diversity of Holstein genetics in our state, and the people behind the far-reaching success of our local Holstein industry. It is my pleasure to be involved in this organization and to be part of this ‘Holstein Family’. The key to what makes our industry and association special is the people involved. Their passion, family values, hard work and camaraderie exist no matter where you travel. Because of the black and white cow, we have all been fortunate enough to make friendships near and far. It is with these invaluable relationships that we enjoy the Holstein business.

The California Holstein Association’s goal continues to be to advertise and promote our members’ Registered Holsteins to enthusiasts locally, around the country and internationally. We aim to help members capitalize on the consistent added value Registered Holsteins provide in this always evolving industry. With this in mind, services are available to aid in advertising for sales and events- we invite you to inquire further.

The future of our club is bright- as the California Junior Holstein Club encourages youth and develops skills for them to become leaders in the Holstein and agriculture fields. The programs we offer help shape these enthusiastic young people into confident, articulate ambassadors for the dairy community. From the responsibilities of raising show animals, to knowledge and competitiveness gained in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, poise in public speaking and networking at events, our junior members have the confidence and talent to go far in whatever they pursue. As this magazine gets printed, 12 juniors will be travelling to compete and represent CA at the National Convention in Kentucky! In mid-July a large group will be learning and having fun at Cow Camp hosted graciously by Cal Poly faculty & students.

This magazine is available online year round on our website www. caholstein.com and distributed throughout the year nationwide. Additional copies are available from the office upon request if you have an opportunity to share our publication with visitors. Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder of the Year

Every year we honor a family and herd that has had a major impact on the Holstein breed not only in California but across the nation as well. This year’s honorees certainly have been recognized coast-to-coast with their results in the show ring, as well as their involvement with some of the most genetically influential cows in the business. It’s my honor to present Frank & Diane Borba of MB Lucky Lady Farm with the Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award.

Diane Morasci met Frank ‘Chopper’ Borba on Halloween in 1974 through mutual friends. They grew up in the same neighborhood, found they had plenty in common and were married in 1979. They established MB Lucky Lady Farm on the Morasci family dairy, and had two children: Stephanie (38) and Frankie (36). Stephanie and her husband, Louie, now run the dayto-day operations on the farm, and have three children. Frankie has taken the reins at Frank Borba & Son Custom Chopping. He and his wife, Alison, have four children.

Diane & Frank milk about 1025 cows on MB Lucky Lady Farm. The herd consists primarily of Holstein, with 75% of those being registered cows. They also have 400 acres of almond trees and another 250 acres of farm land. While most of the show cows are housed at other locations, they have also invested in a fair number of high-genomic testing Holsteins, and Louie enjoys the genetic management of those cattle.

In the past two decades, Diane and Chopper have been involved in several successful partnerships owning some of the most notable cows in the business. They were part of the group that purchased Regancrest S Chassity EX-92 GMD DOM 35* and her package of offspring at the 2009 International Intrigue Sale. That package included Mr Chassity Gold Chip EX-94, sire of hundreds of Excellent daughters and numerous AllAmerican and All-Canadian winners.

Diane grew up showing cows and has always enjoyed owning some good ones. In 2011, she and Frank bought into RockyMountain Talent Licorice EX-95, who went on to be the All-American and All-Canadian 4-Year-Old that year. Ms Candy Apple EX-94, owned with Frank & Carol Borba, was the Unanimous AllAmerican R&W 5-Year-Old in 2013.

In more recent years, they have been coowners of Oakfield GC Darby EX-95, the Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2019 and All-American 5-Year-Old that year. Idee Windbrook Lynzi EX-95-4ECAN, who was 1st 5-Year-Old and Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2019, with Darby standing second to her in class. Meadow Green Absolute Fanny-Red EX-96, is a two-time World Dairy Expo Grand Champion and was the Holstein International Red & White Champion in 2020.

Alfinch Zelgodis Taci EX-96, owned with Frank & Carol, has been Grand Champion of the California State Holstein Show and is a several time All-American and All-Canadian nominee and winner from 2019 through 2022. This year, the same partnership exhbited the Grand Champion of the State Show with Cleland Rb Admiringly-Red-ET EX-95.

High-scoring homebred cows include MB-Luckylady Lee 887-ET EX94 and MB-Luckylady Dorman 6044-ET EX-93. Currently, they have two very exciting bulls in stud: MB-Luckylady Bullseye-ET at Semex and MBLuckylady Eye Candy-ET at Select. Both are sons of Ladyrose Caught Your Eye-ET EX-92, the two-time All-American show cow, that they co-bred with Mark & Nicki Rueth.

Diane & Frank took a sizeable risk in the genomic part of the industry in 2011 when they struck a deal to buy half of Miss OCD Robst DeliciousET VG-87 GMD DOM, one of the most genetically far-reaching cows of the past decade. The dam of Mr Mogul Delta 1427-ET, as well as several other sons in AI, Delicious has countless daughters and granddaughters that have also placed sons into stud. She was voted the 2018 Holstein International Cow of the Year.

In the Jersey ring, they bred the popular World Dairy Expo Grand Champion, MB Lucky Lady Feliz Navidad EX-93, exhibited by Rivendale Farms. Feliz has proven to be a fantastic brood cow as well, and her family is continually in demand in the Jersey breed.

With their enthusiasm for great breed cows and outstanding show cows, it is a pleasure to present the 2023 California Holstein Association Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award to Frank & Diane Borba.

AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year

Johnny Machado of Turlock, CA is the 2023 AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year.

This Holstein enthusiast was born and raised on a dairy that started in 1971 with just nine cows. Showing an interest in cattle from a young age, by the age of 15 he was juggling his high school career with day-to-day chores around the dairy. He showed dairy cattle in 4-H and FFA and was part of the 1999 FFA State Champion Dairy Judging Team and National Runner up FFA judging team. Upon graduation from high school in 2000, he choose to work full time at the dairy instead of attending college. He had a passion for breeding and genetics instantly and has placed an emphasis on improving the herd since then. He became a partner with his mother in Machado Dairy, where they carry the prefix Is-A-Bel in her honor.

Johnny is passionate about purebred cows; his herd is enrolled in the Holstein Complete Program and all animals are Basic ID’d. Any animals that are 92% or higher are registered in the herd book. The herd is DHIA tested monthly and has a BAA of 1064. Of that, 45% have been Good Plus or better on the last eight classifications. Johnny has bred 21 Excellent and 195 Very Good Holsteins as well as developed another 12 Excellent cows.

Johnny is a man of few words, but has an eye that can see cattle for generations to come according to his friends. Over the last three decades, he has purchased foundation cows for his herd that continue to be successful for him.

One such cow is Duckett Doorman Fushia-ET (EX-93), a direct daughter of two-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Harvue Roy Frosty (EX97 2E GMD). Her best record is over 25,000 lbs. milk and her first three daughters are all classified VG-87 or higher. She has calves by Parfect, Hannans and Frisco and pregnancies by Delta-Lambda, Drop Box, Summerfest, Tatoo, Harmony, Cadillac, Luster P, and Thunderstruck.

Another herd favorite is S-S-I Jacoby Bad Habit (VG-88 EX-MS). Johnny realized the potential of this heifer long before the world saw her dam, S-S-I Doc Have Not 8784-ET (EX-95), sell in an impressive $1.925 million package in June 2022. Her oldest daughter, sired by Summerfest, is +2.91T. She has pregnancies

Another outstanding individual that Johnny has develope was Duckett Doorman Gena (EX-91). Purchased as a 2-year-old, her knew her potential from the moment he saw her. She is a Doorman from All-American nominee Laidlawn Sanchez Gemini (EX-96), and encapsulates the “getting better with age” mantra. Scoring VG as a 2-year-old, she was Reserve All-California Senior 3-YearOld in 2021 and was HM Intermediate Champion at the Western Spring National that same spring.

When it comes to homebred cows, Is-A-Bel Richman 4411 (EX-91) is the favorite. She has Kenosha and King Doc daughters both scored VG and numerous granddaughters. She was Supreme Champion of the Western Classic in 2021.

Machado Dairy currently milks around 1700 cows and has a RHA of 27,472 lbs. ECM. That herd average and admirable genetic statistics played a prominent role in the Machado’s herd being recognized by Holstein Association USA as a Progressive Genetic Herd in 2021. More recently, four milking Hancock daughters graced the cover of the Winter edition of the Select Sires catalog.

Johnny’s passion for cattle is overshadowed by his love for his family and helping in the community. He and his wife Maggie enjoy seeing their daughters Kenadie and Kaelyn get their calves ready for the local junior shows and teaching them all the different aspects of farm life. He is always willing to help out youth and support other west coast breeders. He houses numerous 4-H and FFA project animals at the dairy and is always willing to sell local project heifers.

Johnny is a board member for All-West Select Sires, serving on the Executive Committee, a committee member for the Western Dairy Showcase and continues to pursue success in an ever-changing California dairy industry.

CALIFORNIA DAIRY YOUTH CHALLENGE

The 2nd Annual Youth Challenge was held during the CA State Holstein Show and Spring Jersey Show! Designed to recognize young dairy enthusiasts in their work with showing cattle, encourage participation and promote friendly competition, while improving skills and knowledge. This contest was open to all youth ages 9-21 and consisted of three equally weighted portions- A Dairy Judging Contest of 4 classes utilizing the tremendous quality cattle on the grounds for the show tested juniors’ type analysis skills; a written exam covering practical husbandry knowledge and questions sourced from the Holstein Foundation workbook series; and showmanship placings. Special thanks to Caitlin Lopes, Joseph Silva, Cole Bettencourt and Christie Hobby for their repsective roles in facilitating the judging contest, selecting classes and acting as official judges.

STATE SHOW MEMORIAL AWARDS

Cortney Borba Memorial Award

Aiden Azevedo is the winner of the 2023 Cortney Borba Memorial Award. The Borba family honors the memory of their daughter Cortney each year by recognizing the Junior Show Grand Champion exhibitor. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Aiden, 20, is working on his family’s 850-cow dairy in Hilmar, in which he plans on running with his dad and uncles in he future. He has numerous showing accolades from his time as a junior member and is very thankful to the Borba family for this award.

Brock Jarrett Toledo California Fitting & Showing Award

The winner of the 2023 Brock Jarrett Toledo California Fitting & Showing Award is Logan Silveira, who placed second in showmanship and first in the fitting competitions held at the California State Holstein Show.

Logan received the perpetual trophy donated by the Toledo family in memory of young Brock Toledo, son of Ron and Loreta, who passed away as a young man in 1996.

Logan is a recent graduate of Chowchilla High School. Logan’s SAE projects include working on his family’s dairy farm, Silveira Dairy, and raising registered Holstein heifers and cows to exhibit at state and national dairy shows. Logan was a member of the 2021 state winning dairy judging team for Chowchilla FFA. He most recently was selected as the state winner for his FFA Dairy Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency. After high school, Logan plans to attend college to major in Dairy Science and Ag Business.

Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Cayden Muir, 18, of Hanford, CA is the 2023 recipient of the Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship. A senior at Hanford High School, Cayden carries a 3.95 GPA and is looking to attend either Boise State University or Oklahoma State University to major in Animal Science.

A member of the California Junior Holstein Association, Hanford FFA, and the Kings Haven 4-H Club, Cayden has shown both Dairy and Sheep projects at the King’s Fair over the past several years. In addition to his livestock ventures and dedication to his school work, he also played football, basketball and baseball through his high school career.

Cayden credits the competition and camaraderie of exhibiting livestock and playing sports into shaping his life, as he notes in his scholarship application, “I pride myself on my hard work that I put into the classroom to be able to do the things I love outside the classroom. Junior Presidents’ Message

Hello, my name is Jon Chapman and I am happy to serve as your 2023-24 California Junior Holstein Association Co-President along with Mykel Mull. I am 17 years old and a 10th generation dairy farmer from Turlock. I am a recent high school graduate, with plans to attend Merced Junior College next year. My involvement with the Holstein cow has provided many opportunities on a personal, educational, professional, and social level.

Personally, I have learned responsibility, hard work, determination, and compassion through taking care of our animals. As a member of the California Junior Holstein Association for the past 8 years I have expanded my leadership capabilities, knowledge in dairy bowl, improved study & research skills, and practiced public speaking. In attending Holstein association events, I have had the chance to meet and build friendships with other youth, as well as interact with industry professionals and Holstein breeders. Showing cattle has allowed me to be an ambassador for production agriculture in communicating with the public and educating consumers. I continually strive to build my herd and develop high end genetics.

I would like to personally extend an invitation to all of our current (and prospective!) CA Junior Holstein members to participate in the various activities offered throughout the year. There are many ways to get involved and have fun. I encourage you to try out something new, bring a friend, and make some new connections! You can recruit new members from your local community, 4-H and FFA.

• Summer Cow Camp gives attendees the chance to learn about the dairy industry through classroom and hands-on instruction.

The annual Planning Conference happens in November and serves as an opportunity to discuss and develop future activities in addition to enjoying games and camaraderie.

State Convention offers a wide variety of contests and workshops. Please check out the pages later in this issue featuring 2023 results to get a glimpse of what is available. Involvement on the state level can earn you the chance to compete at the National Holstein Convention contests.

The State Holstein Show is held in April and showcases youth exhibitors. The newer Youth Challenge Contest encompasses three portions- showmanship, knowledge exam and judging contest.

• Junior Holstein Show Contest is a state version of ‘All-Americans’ recognizing animals shown successfully throughout the year.

BREEDER OF THE FUTURE AWARD WINNERS

Sixteen year old Matthew Pacheco of Los Banos, CA, is the 2023 Breeder of the Future Boy. Matthew has been a member of the Merced County Holstein Association for the last 4 years.

As a member of the Los Banos Community 4-H club, Matthew has received both his Bronze and Silver Stars and received the Lloyd Cotta Memorial Award for Outstanding-Most Deserving 2nd Year Dairy Exhibitor. Matthew is also active with the Los Banos FFA Chapter, where he has received Proficiency Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Dairy Production and Dairy Judging as well as Ag Mechanics. He also attended the National FFA Convention as a Delegate.

Ryan currently has 113 dairy animals, with 36 of them Registered Holsteins. 74 of these animals are producing age, and his herd has an average milk production over 23,000 lbs. Matthew has participated in local and state Showmanship contests for the last two years with great success. He was the winning Junior showman at the 2021 State Holstein Show, Champion Sophomore Showman at the 2022 Merced County Spring Fair and Champion Dairy Showman Overall at the May Day Livestock Expo. “I have had great success in multiple showmanship classes with my heifer Raven, who I purchased as a calf and trained diligently. She has been a great heifer and now that she has calved, I look forward to continuing my work with her as a cow. I hope to continue to find lots of success with her,” noted Matthew in his award application.

Beyond the show ring, Matthew is also an accomplished Dairy Judge. Most recently, he was high FFA individual at the 2023 Western Classic

YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL

This year’s Breeder of the Future Girl is 12-year-old Caroline Vieira. Caroline comes from Stockton, CA, and has been a member of the Farmington 4-H Club for four years. Caroline has recently served as the Farmington 4-H Reporter, and will be serving as Secretary this year. Caroline has been very successful at the San Joaquin Ag Fest in Stockton, CA. She has accomplished titles at Ag Fest including Advanced Showman Champion, Junior Champion Registered Holstein, Reserve Junior Champion Registered Holstein, and Supreme Champion Registered Bull. Caroline has also placed well at both the Western Dairy Showcase and the California State Fair in showmanship. Caroline has showcased her skills outside of the ring by placing 4th in the Novice Dairy Judging Division at the California State Show.

“I have enjoyed showing throughout California and getting a chance to exhibit registered heifers that I have purchased to start my herd.”

Caroline also balances her life on the farm with school, church, and dance. She is part of the confirmation program, has completed the CCD Faith in Formation program, and volunteers weekly by helping

Judging Contest. He was also the High Individual at the 2022 California State Show judging contest and placed 3rd at the Fresno State contest. Matthew also participates in multiple other extra-curricular activities such as shooting sports, community service, welding, beef projects, and market goats through the Los Banos 4-H and FFA, and is an accomplished student in the classroom. Matthew helps on the farm by feeding calves, cleaning stalls, pushing up feed, and helping other employees when needed. Growing up, he began purchasing animals to show with the help of his parents. Matthew’s herd has grown over the years as he has practiced perfecting the diets of his animals, and helped make breeding decisions. After high school, Matthew plans on attending college, majoring in Agriculture.

Since then, Keri has had her first calf, giving Caroline her first home-bred heifer, Miss Dodge Kora. Caroline and her parents have purchased several more animals for her to show and grow her herd. Caroline helps on the farm by feeding calves, moving cows, milking, and much more. Caroline proves that she is passionate about the dairy industry and the Holstein breed.

Gold Medal Dam Recognition

· A cow and at least three of her daughters must have been classified.

· The cow herself must be milking in a herd participating in TriStarSM service option. TriStar published records are used in the evaluation.

· Equal emphasis is placed on production and type. In addition, there is equal emphasis on progeny and dam performance.

- Dam’s age adjusted final score

- Dam’s average 2X 305 day ME production records

- Average of daughters’ age adjusted scores

- Average of daughters’ ME production records.

· Separate cutoffs are determined by birth year of the dam. ME production will only be calculated on actual records of 270 days in length or greater for the cow and her progeny.

If the cow, herself, does not qualify on a mature equivalent basis, she may qualify on either one of the following lifetime credits:

- 200,000 pounds of milk, or

- 7,200 pounds of fat, or

- 6,400 pounds of protein

· Automatic evaluation is done twice a year for all cows 87% RHA or higher that were born in the past 25 years. The GMD award is permanent recognition.

All-National Recognition

The All-National Showcase Program is designed to recognize U.S. Registered Holstein® cows and their owners for exceptional performance at National Holstein Shows.

In each of the uniform show classes, the top 10 animals earning the most points will be recognized on our website. The top two animals in each class will feature a current picture. Top 10 animals for each class will also receive a certificate while recognition is added to the top two animal’s pedigree.

To qualify for this award, the animal must meet the following criteria:

· Must be registered in the Holstein Association USA herdbook on or before November 15 in the award year

· Be exhibited at one or more National Holstein Shows during the award year Animals will be eligible to earn points at each National Holstein Show exhibited at throughout the year.

· Points are allocated for a top 10 placing in their respective uniform age class, based on the size of the show.

· Classes recognized will be the individual animal classes as listed in the Uniform Class List in the Holstein USA National Show Program.

· Red & White Holsteins will only earn points if shown in class with the Black & Whites at the National Holstein Shows. Points are not earned in stand-alone Red & White shows.

· The tier a show falls into will be based on the number of head exhibited at that show in the award year.

· Ties will be broken, determined by the highest placing at the National Show with the most total number of animals shown.

It is with heavy hearts that we write that our beloved Dad, Joe A. Duarte, passed away on July 18, 2022 on his 98th Birthday. We lost our Hero, our wonderful Dad, the dairy industry lost a Champion and true Leader, and the world lost a Legend and the truest example of a Gentleman.

Joe was born on July 18, 1924. He grew up in Tracy, CA where he befriended many lifelong friends and graduated from Tracy High in 1944. A year later, at the annual Tracy New Year’s Eve Dance, Joe asked his beloved Mary to dance, and they danced the night away. It was on this night that they fell in love. Joe said often that he was “the luckiest man in the world” when Mary said ‘Yes’, the day that he asked for her hand in marriage on September 15th, 1946. Joe married the love of his life, Mary S. Duarte on June 1, 1947, at St. Bernard’s Church in Tracy. Married for over 74 years, together they lived a charmed and beautiful life. Forever at each other’s sides, husband and wife and best friends.

A lifetime of memories, achievements, awards, milestones and innovations Joe has accomplished. He was always thinking, always working to improve on everything he did. Joe would often tell the story that his High School Teacher, Mrs. Baumgardner told him “Joe, you’re going to do great things in your life because you always say, ‘I’ll try to do it’ and you never say that ‘you can’t do it.’” And that is how Joe lived his life….he always put his best effort forward in everything he touched and he always said he “would try to do it.” Our dad never disappointed and did his best and succeeded in all he touched.

Joe and Mary started their early years together in Tracy, CA where Joe (with the help of a good friend) built Mary her first home when they were first newlywed in 1947. In their early years, Joe worked very hard on the dairy of his father, Antone Duarte and his sister and brotherin-Law, Mary and Manuel Pasqual. In 1951, Joe, Mary and Joe’s father Antone made the decision to go on their own and moved to Modesto where they began their own dairy together. Joe would share the story that as he and Mary were driving away from the town of Tracy on their big move to Modesto, they both cried as they were leaving behind their hometown where they grew up and where most of their family and friends still lived. It was a brave move for this young couple and Joe’s father, Antone.

In May 1958, Joe & Mary, in partnership with Joe’s father, Antone, together purchased their cherished ranch on Faith Home Road and the world-renowned prestigious Duarte-Acres Holsteins was established. Joe would say how fortunate they were that they were able to purchase their beautiful “Faith Home Dairy and Ranch” where they resided for over 64 years. It was here where they raised their three daughters, Kathleen, Irene and Eileen; met so many wonderful neighbors and great friends; and were welcomed into their community in the “then” small town of Turlock, CA.

Joe was partners with his father, Antone, from 1951 until his father passed away in November 1966. Joe often proudly spoke of how intelligent his father (our Vovo) was. He would say that his father was an “excellent cow man.” The two would work hard side by side on their Duarte-Acres Holstein Dairy and Joe always spoke proudly and fondly of his father. Joe would say he learned everything from our Vovo and never forgot his father’s teachings. He cherished those days where he was fortunate to get to work with his father, absorb everything his very smart father shared with Joe and strived to make his father proud of him. (Dad, Vovo was very proud of you – we are all so very proud of you.)

Through Joe’s genius, Duarte-Acres would thrive and go on to break

many milk productions records. In 1959 Joe’s cows were the first herd to break the 600-pound cow average of butterfat in Stanislaus County. In 1970 Joe’s Holsteins were the 3rd Highest Honor List Herd in the Nation. Joe always would say “if you take good care of your cows, your cows will take care of you.” And take good care of his cows Joe did. He never liked seeing his or any other dairymen’s cows out in the mud. That bothered Joe tremendously. Joe came up with the design of building free stall barns back in the mid 1960’s. He drew up a design and his good friend and Contractor (Mary’s cousin) Frank Souza would go on to build it. Joe and Frank would sit for hours at the kitchen table as the two would put their thinking heads together engineering plans and models on improving working operations at the Duarte Dairy. Joe was always thinking of ways to improve efficiency as he believed 100% on maximizing efficiency in everything he did, and he never took off his “thinking cap.” Duarte-Acres Dairy would accomplish much through Joe’s never-ending drive, hardworking ethics, and pride in building the best Herd.

Joe loved his Holstein Cows and his Holstein Cows loved Joe. He spent hours on the Dairy. It was amazing to watch Joe (wearing his infamous safari hat) walk throughout all of his cow strings and his cows never stirred. They welcomed Joe into their “herd” as if he was one of their own. Joe could wind his way in between his cows who were either lying down in their exercise lots or loafing around and his cows never moved a muscle for they trusted Joe and knew he was such a good man, such a kind man, such a gentle man. They knew, under his loving care, that they were all well cared for and had the very best Dairyman tending to their every need. That they did, Joe loved his Cows.

In the early 1960’s Joe knew he could improve on milk production if his Cows were fed the proper diet throughout their gestation. Joe was a very smart man, and he was brilliant at getting other smart minded professionals to come sit with him at his dining room “round table” and go over nutrition. He would invite Dr. Johnson (Nutritionist for Stanislaus County.) His veterinarian, Dr. Baker, A.L. Gilbert & Sons Feed, Lyle Hoyt (Director of Nutrition at Moorman’s) and Ed. Vieira all would sit at their “round table meetings.” With the help of these good men, Joe came up with Total Mix Ration (TMR) which delivered the correct amount of protein/carbs to his cows at the right time throughout the months they were producing and then adjusting their TMR diet when they were dry. Joe also worked with his Kirby salesman to design a “Mixer” that would efficiently combine the cows’ TMR diet – and the now commonly used “feed mixer wagon” was invented. With the creation of TMR, Duarte-Acres Holsteins was the first herd to break 20,000 lb. cow average in 1970. Joe and Duarte-Acres Holsteins went on to break many milk production records and Herd Average awards.

Joe, with Frank Souza’s construction know how, continuously built onto Duarte-Acres. With the newly designed free stalls, which were first built on Duarte-Acres in the mid 1960’s, came the flush systems which washed down the concrete and left the cows with clean corals to meander. As Joe never liked to see his corals dirty and did not want his cows to get dirty. With the flush system Joe designed the very first lagoons to hold the water where his efficient system would recycle water from the corals to the lagoon via a solids separator. All this technology introduction came from the eyes, the mind, and the amazing vision of Joe.

In February 1970 Frank and his wife Ethel invited Joe and Mary on a trip to Europe to see the circular automated milk barns. Frank wanted to introduce this technology to California’s dairymen and wanted Joe to go with him as, with Joe there, Frank knew he had the smartest dairyman with him. Joe and Mary talked about this wonderful trip for years. Mary had never flown on an airplane, and it was a trip of a lifetime for both

Joe and Mary. Their love of traveling was ignited with this European adventure.

Joe would build Mary her next new custom home which was completed in October 1971 – and Joe would often chuckle and tease Mary that she was lucky as she was fortunate to get to live in two newly built homes. Mary always knew how lucky she was in marrying Joe. Joe adored Mary, never missed a day that he didn’t tell her he loved her and she him; always told Mary that she was so beautiful (and our mom was beautiful.) Theirs was truly a love story-what storybooks are written about our parents lived it.

Joe and Frank, in the late 1970’s, would design and build Duarte-Acres’ parallel 10 cow Herringbone Milking Barn. This again was another stateof-the-art technology for its time where Joe was involved in the design every inch of the way.

The awards and achievements that Joe accomplished in his lifetime were extensive. To say he left behind a Legacy is an understatement…. Joe left behind a path to which the next generation and the next and the generation after that one will have to guide them in continuously improving the Dairy industry; continuously improving on efficiency and continuously improving on the herdsman ship and care of his beloved Cows.

As Joe introduced more and more advancements in Dairy Herd Management, he become widely recognized as a Leader and a trail blazer in the dairy industry. Extensive invitations for Joe to speak on Dairy Herd Management came in from all over the United States and internationally. Joe was invited to speak at dairy industry events throughout all the US, Canada, Portugal, Germany, and Holland. Joe prepared his professional slide show and shared his management practices with as many dairymen who would listen. Joe always wanted to help his fellow dairymen and was generous in sharing his industry ideas, his dairy management practices, and his time. Numerous articles have been written about Joe.

In June 1970 Joe hosted the Duarte Dairy Day co-hosted with Moorman Manufacturing and their Director of Nutrition, Mr. Lyle Hoyt. This was a very special event for Joe. Four hundred dairymen gathered at Joe’s Dairy to listen and learn from one of the foremost milk producers in the nation: in the world. From that day forward, Joe began to host tours of his Duarte-Acres Holsteins on a regular basis. Guest would come from all corners of the world to learn from one of the best dairymen in the world. Annually, over 1500 visitors would be treated to a tour of DuarteAcres. Joe took great pride in hosting these very popular Duarte-Acres Dairy Tours as Joe’s dairy soon became a “must stop” destination in the industry.

On November 12, 1972, Joe received a telegram from Ford Motor Company letting him know that they had selected Joe as Ford’s 1973 Farm Efficiency Award Winner. This was an award that Joe held in very high esteem. Ford flew Joe and Mary first class to their manufacturing facility in Detroit. It was an incredible accomplishment that Ford recognized Joe’s many innovations to “American Agriculture” and Joe, being a humble man, was so honored. Joe talked often about this cherished award.

In 1974 the Turlock Chamber of Commerce awarded Joe as their Livestock Man of the Year. Joe and Mary were the Honorees at the parade and were driven throughout Turlock’s’ downtown Main Street in a convertible. They were treated as VIPs in their beloved town of Turlock.

Joe and Mary were active members at Sacred Heart Parish and devout Catholics. A new church was commissioned to be built and in 1970 Father Alvernaz tasked Joe as the Chairman of the Dairy Division in the fund-raising efforts. After Joe finished his chores on his dairy, he

would meet with his dairymen neighbors working diligently to bring in donations for the new Catholic Church. Joe’s Dairy Division would bring in over $300K (which was more donations than the totality of all the other sectors combined.) A truly commendable effort. The new Sacred Heart Church in Turlock owes a great gratitude to Joe Duarte.

Joe and Mary’s three daughters attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Joe volunteered as the 4-H Dairy Leader for a decade. He started as Dairy Leader in 1970 when his three daughters were all showing Holsteins and remained Dairy leader until his youngest daughter’s last year in 4-H in 1980. Joe truly enjoyed being Dairy Leader. Sacred Heart 4-H Dairy Club became well known at Stanislaus County Fair. Under Joe’s Leadership, Sacred Heart would win Clean Barn Award year after year. Joe placed a high level of standard to presentation. With Joe’s excellent eye for cattle, Sacred Heart 4-H Dairy Club would win Club Group multiple years (the award that all the other 4-H dairy clubs competed to win.) The 4-H years brought Joe many years of fun times. He would nighthawk the Club’s cattle (staying up all night before show day) keeping the cattle in his Club spotless so that the little showmen would arrive the morning of show day in their whites with their cattle kept spotlessly clean under Joe’s watch and ready for the ring.

Joe was widely recognized throughout the years of showing their impressive purebred Holstein cattle and he would look forward to helping his three daughters at the local County Fair; the State Fair; the Black & White Shows; the Western National and later at the top echelon of Dairy Cattle competition, the World Dairy Expo. Joe always made time for his daughters and helped them all throughout their lives. At the California State Fair in 1981 Joe showed in the Dairy Open Division. Joe’s most favorite Cow, Ledon Complete Lou Lemon, won the Supreme Dairy Female Champion Cow ..this was one of Joe’s most momentous accomplishments – Lemon was quite the Cow and won Joe a big sterling silver buckle that he wore proudly.

Joe met many of his longtime, dear friends during the 4-H years and through his association with the Holstein Association. His dear friend, the late Bernard Souza, encouraged he and Mary to start attending the National Holstein Association’s Annual Convention and Joe would serve as a Delegate representing California for numerous years. Joe and Mary along with their three daughters would attend the National Holstein Conventions held all throughout the USA. It became the family’s’ annual summer vacation which were filled with happy memories. Not to mention the many summer trips to Santa Cruz, vacations to Disneyland and a first-class holiday taking his family to see their homeland, The Azores and Portugal.

Joe’s resume and list of achievements themselves tell the story that he was a man highly respected by his peers in the dairy industry and his community. In 1958-1963 Joe was President of Stanislaus County DHI; 1970-75 President Western United Dairyman; 1974-1980 Director California State Holstein Assoc.; 1974-82 Director Consolidated Dairyman Assoc.; 1980-1982 Board VP California State Holstein Assoc.; 1982-1984 President California State Holstein Assoc.; 1983 Director United Dairyman Assoc.; 1983 Elected on the Board of Modesto Production Credit (MPC); 1986 Chairman MPC; 1987 Chairman Central Valley Production Credit; 1988-1990 Elected on Board of California Cooperative Creamery (California Gold Creamery); 1992 Elected on Board of Western United Dairyman; 1998-2000 Elected on Board of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA); 1985 Joe was named Stanislaus Holstein Association Breeder of the Year; in 1987 Joe was honored with the California Holstein Association’s Senior Breeder Award. In 1990, the Stanislaus Holstein Show was dedicated in his honor for Joe’s work and dedication to the county.

When Joe and Mary were newly married, he promised his Bride that he would take her “traveling around the world” and Joe, a man of his word, lived up to that promise. Together they would travel throughout the

entire US (visiting 47 of our 50 great United States) and internationally. Their first international trip was in 1971 which took them to Italy, France, Portugal, the Azores, and Madeira. They traveled to Portugal and Azores a total of four times; A total of five trips to Paris and visited Great Britain, The Netherlands, Germany, Canada, China, and Hong Kong.

Taking a total of 20 cruises, their cruise adventures took them to Alaska, Scandinavian Countries, Russia, Panama, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, South America, Argentina, Chile, twice to Australia and New Zealand as they traveled on Queen Mary II’s inaugural voyage as well as on the Queen Victoria.

Joe leaves behind his three daughters, Kathleen (Ken) Elliott; Irene (Dwayne) Nelson; and Eileen Duarte. He proudly spoke of his five grandchildren Michelle (Gino) Pedretti; Brian (Erin) Nelson; Brent (Caitlyn) Nelson; Amber Elliott and Laura (David) Tresslar. And cherished the memories with his seven great grandchildren Mikayla, Nolan and Kaylee Pedretti; Annabella, Clara and Daphne Nelson; and Luke Nelson. His sister-in-law Evelyn Luis, his many loving nieces, nephews and close cousins. Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary who passed away on 9/22/21. His sister Mary Pasqual, brother Tony Duarte, Father Antone Duarte and Mother Alexandrina Duarte.

Our Family would like to say a special “thank you” and offer our sincerest gratitude for the special care provided to both our parents by their caregiver Maria Antoinette Batista. It was with Antoinette’s loving care that we were able to spend these precious years with our Mom and Dad. Dad so enjoyed the friendship he had with Antoinette and the two shared much laughter and treasured conversations.

To Dad’s close dairymen friends whose group met once a month to enjoy lunch together, share dairy stories and current events, our family thanks you. Dad so looked forward to his monthly Men’s Luncheon.

To Dad’s family and friends who took time to visit Dad and offer company to him in the months since our mom passed away, we thank you.

WENDELL “ANDY” ROLLIN

Wendell Andrew Rollin, known by many as “Andy” went to be with the Lord on Friday March 3, 2023. He was born on September 10th, 1965 in San Diego, California to Paul and Carol Rollin. Andy moved with his parents and four siblings to Burrel, California in 1975 where he has resided for the last 47 years. Upon completion from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he returned home to pursue his passion of dairy farming working alongside his father and brother in a partnership known as Rollin Valley Farms. Andy married his wife, Melannie, 32 years ago and together they have 3 children: Westin, Madison, and Prestin.

Andy was a passionate man who loved his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. His gentle disposition and servant’s heart led him to volunteer his time to numerous organizations such as the Caruthers District Fair Board, the Fresno Fair Livestock Committee, Riverdale Joint Unified School District Board, Vice President of the Riverdale Lions Club, and most recently as a Board Member of the California Milk Advisory Board. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, snowboard, boogie board and golf. His favorite places in life were Cayucos, Texas, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and anywhere his family was. He was a constant supporter of his community and could often be found BBQ’ing at the many fundraisers in the Riverdale area, helping organize the local fairs, and hosting friends and family at his home.

More than anything, Andy gave thanks for the blessings of his wife, children, grandchildren, and the many people that touched his life. He is preceded in death by his father Paul Rollin and sister Milli Rollin. He is survived by his wife Melannie; sons, Westin (Kristin) Rollin and Prestin Rollin, daughter; Madison (Dominic) Fagundes; 4 grandchildren, Emersyn, Kylin, Carden, and Camryn, mother; Carol, brother; Donny(Christina) Rollin, sisters Cathy (Mark) Medeiros, and Emma (Kevin) Moore. Andy will forever be remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and will be missed dearly by all who came to know him.

Dennis Edlund of Herald, CA passed away October 15, 2022. He was born September 6, 1954. Dennis was a long-time Holstein USA area representative, and later regional DHIA manager.

In these positions he always went above and beyond to serve California Holstein breeders & members. He was truly kind, helpful, and had a smile for all he encountered. Dennis had a love for all animals and took great pride in the nonprofit animal charity- Heaven Sent Rescuehe and life partner Shelley Dunnigan founded.
