NEWSLETTER Friday 11th October Dear parents and carers, Thank you to all parents who attended the Year 9 and 10 Information Evening this week. The evening covered a variety of items through presentations from members of the senior leadership team, including information about the curriculum, safeguarding, homework and revision. Mr Rice showed parents our online revision and learning support platforms, in particular introducing parents to GCSE Pod and Seneca Learning. These two platforms will be shown to all students over the coming weeks but are excellent support for revision, which we do expect all students in Years 9 and 10 to be doing on a regular basis now students are preparing for GCSEs. Mr Rice, Vice Principal, showed parents the curve of forgetting and spoke about the importance of repetition in overcoming this curve. Students in Year 9 and Year 10 have to recall GCSE information across three years in total and will need to work hard to overcome this forgetting curve by revising and revisiting work every day. Mr Rice highlighted the need to spend three hours an evening on both homework and revising content at this point in a student’s education. The forgetting curve shows that if we return to new information and repeat the learning we will remember more each time we do this. It takes at least 4 repeats before we have strong recall of this new information This week has, as always, been a rich and busy time for us all here. In addition to our information evening, the Isle of Wight Literary Festival has been a highlight for us, with students from across Year 8, Year 10 and 11 all involved in workshops and talks. A reminder that I hold my parent forums twice weekly on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm – 2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm to enable parents to get to know me and discuss the work of the school with me directly. Many thanks, as always, for your continuing support of the academy. Rachel Kitley Click the arrows or swipe to turn pages

TIKTOK—INTERNET SAFETY At CEC many students continue to work hard to notify us when there are new apps and new groups that are released online and also when there is online activity that may be threatening the safety of some of our community and/or putting them in potentially vulnerable positions. Please be aware of ‘TikTok’. It’s a social media app that gives users the opportunity to share 60 second short videos with friends, family or the entire world. Like Twitter-owned Vine and Musical.ly before it, videos shared range from funny sketches to lip-sync videos featuring special effects. Parents have expressed concern around the inappropriate language of some of the video posted which may make this less suitable for younger children. Predators seeking to connect with children is another risk that parents have said their children. For more insight on parent review, visit Common Sense Media. Consultation: Admissions Policy 2021-2022

In accordance with the DfE’s 2014 statutory ‘Schools Admissions Code’ guidance the Local Governing Body of Cowes Enterprise College is consulting on the Admissions Arrangements for September 2021 because changes are proposed. The amendment is to the oversubscription criteria inserted as number 4: Children of staff who have, (1) been employed at Cowes Enterprise College for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made, or (2) have been recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. The proposed Admissions Policy 2021-22 is available to view by clicking this link or hard copy from the school office. Comments on the proposed admissions arrangements should be sent to the clerk to governors jwareham@cowesec.org or by post to Jill Wareham, Cowes Enterprise College, Crossfield Avenue, Cowes, PO31 8HB by 12 noon on 12th November 2019.

CONGRATULATIONS GEORGIE Congratulations to Georgie Price who gained the prestigious Trinity Grade 8 saxophone with distinction. This is the highest grade possible for a music exam accomplished after many years of dedicated study and commitment to musical excellence. The exam pieces were fiendishly difficult to play and Georgie performed them with confidence and dexterity

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

NEWS

It’s been another great week for the Duke of Edinburgh students. Some more books arrived, the cookery sessions have been very successful and Vinnie is beginning to make some progress on his puppy training.

There will be a meeting after school on Tuesday 22nd October in BU11 for all Duke of Edinburgh participants so please remind your child to attend and to pay careful attention to the tutor announcements in a morning. We are still waiting for some books and I hope to have them all next week.
