475 Sharps New Model 1869 Sporting Rifle .44-77 caliber, 26 octagonal barrel with the early Hartford collar. S/N CL134, marked on the top flat near the breech calibre, new model 1869 then right at the collar 20. Just froward of the point off of the fancy rear sight marked in three lines: Sharps Rifle Manufu Co Hartford Conn. These markings were set to accommodate this fancy rear barrel sight. A custom rear barrel sight probably made by Kellogg. Front folding globe sight with line up markings. Double set triggers. Fancy walnut stock with pewter tip forearm. Accompanying this lot is a factory letter from W.S. Peace which gives a history of this unique sporting rifle based on the serial number. Serial number CL134 is noted in the Sharp’s record as serial number 150134 and was done so based on the company wanting to designate a departure from percussion and percussion conversions using Roman numerals CL to represent 150 thousand. This sporting rifle was sold on June 22, 1870, to A.A. Kellogg of New Haven, Ct. as a sporting octagon rifle. As stated in this letter this is one of the scarcest being around 100 rifles produced. Barrel retains all of the bright original blue finish. Very little wear along the high edges. Fancy rear sight retains most of the bright blue finish. All of the screw heads with extra polished blue. Frame retains all of the case colored finish. Lockplate and hammer retains all of the case colors with just a little light brown freckling on the back of the lockplate. This does not distract and very difficult to see. Lever and lower trigger plate retains most of the case colors just light fading on the back of the trigger plate and bottom of the lever. Stock and forearm are excellent with very few nicks and dings and a nice untouched feathered look to the wood. Very nice opened-grained. The pewter tip has nice untouched patina. Bore and chamber is just like new. Overall this rifle has a mint untouched look. $50,000 - $75,000
