314 Spanish Jintea Attakapas Saddle ca. 1830 Brown leather covered wooden tree of Spanish - Louisiana Cajun design origins with a very tall saddle horn and high cantle, harness leather covered back jockey and skirts. Has iron furniture with brass decorative tacks. Has very thick wood block stirrups carved to represent an owl. Cinch straps appear to be older replacements, cinch lacking. The Attakapas saddle, named after a native American tribe in southwest Louisiana, was a popular style with southern cattleman in the Antebellum period. Like other southern civilian saddles they were pressed into Confederate military service. This particular saddle in featured on page 53 of Knopp, Made in the C.S.A., Saddle Makers of the Confederacy Good. Has moderate age and service wear with small areas of leather loss, heaviest on the horn, crazing on the skirt and back jockey leather. John Ashworth Collection $3,000 - $6,000

315 Eagle Pommel Officer’s Saddle ca. 1830 Half Spanish pattern saddle with black patent leather padded trapunto quilted seat, cast brass eagle head pommel and high padded cantle. Has harness leather skirts and stirrup straps with iron stirrups. Underside lined in padded linen. Complete with a woven web girth strap. These eagle head pommel saddles were popular with both regular army and militia officers during the pre-Civil War period. Good. Moderate to heavy service wear, leather split on the edge of the cantle with some loss. Most of the finish flaked off of the skirts. Lining edges worn and frayed. 316 Eagle Pommel Officer’s Half Spanish Saddle ca. 1830 Black leather covered “Half Spanish” tree with cast brass eagle head pommel horn and high cantle, iron hardware. Skirts are studded with plain brass domed conchos. Padded on the underside. Has brass stirrups. Complete with a permanently attached blue wool and canvas shabraque trimmed on the edge in double white bands. Typical of the saddles used in the Texas War of Independence and the Mexican War. Good. Leather shows normal age and service wear, crazing and a small repair on the left skirt. Cantle edge worn and repaired with modern brads. The wool shabraque is heavily mothed.
