172 Folk Art Chair in Bottle Whimsey with Col. Dexter Photograph American, ca 1890s. A chair-in-a-bottle whimsey sculpture with a locking trick stopper and a hand carved ladderback chair. Tipped inside is an original photograph of the bottle’s maker, Quartermaster Sergeant George Nelson Dexter Sr. (1829-1905) standing beside two flags. The lower is the original 3rd Regiment Georgia Volunteers’ Flag, and the upper is an 1892 Reunion Flag. The photo is inscribed in graphite on the verso: Commodore / G. N. Dexter Sr. / & 3 Ga Battle / Flag / maker G. N. / Dexter Sr. / Madison / Ga; ht. 7 in. According to Dexter’s obituary in the Atlanta Constitution, the Civil War veteran was the founder of the first Confederate reunion in 1874 and played an integral role in arranging the first ever reunion of Union and Confederate veterans in 1889. The included photograph of Dexter is one of only two known early photographs of this battle flag, the other known photograph being in the state of Georgia’s Archives. The lot also includes a hardcover copy of Caroline E. Janney’s book Remembering the Civil War: Reunion and the Limits of Reconciliation (University of North Carolina Press, 2013) which includes a mention of Dexter’s role in the first Confederate reunion, as well as a DVD of an episode of HGTV’s If Walls Could Talk which features Dexter, and a detailed research file with information about the maker’s biography and the history of the pictured battle flag. $500 - $700
