Lots 668 and 669 belonged to John E. Mersdorff III. Originally from Madison, IN, Mersdorff earned a finance degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, and moved to New York City. In New York he befriended the noted American muralist, illustrator, and author, Ernest Peixotto, and his wife, the artist Mary Hutchinson Peixotto. He became a close confident to the Peixottos and eventually was the heir to their estate. Peixotto traveled frequently, as is evidenced by the many labels still present on his luggage, and had a lifelong interest in art, architecture, and history. Mersdorff left the bulk of his estate to Historic Madison, Inc. to support its mission to preserve Madison’s nationally significant historic architecture.
