From the headmaster's desk Dear Alumni and Friends, Looking back over my second year as Headmaster brings a great sense of joy and excitement. This mostly comes from the many new friends and supporters I have met since starting here. Latin School is a special institution because there are so many extraordinary individuals that have and continue to do great things for the school. I invite you to look back with us on an incredibly blessed year at Covington Latin School. In this 2013-2014 Annual Report issue, it’s my hope that these pages are more than an informative retrospective, but that they serve as a reflection of just how valuable your support is to the mission and financial stability of Latin School. More than just scholars, we are striving to form leaders. And not just executives and corporate heads, but we seek to form leaders with great minds and hearts. Latin School leaders are individuals who truly inspire trust and love. Latin School leaders are Servants. Your investment in Latin School is driving the success of today’s students. This May, we saw 47 of our Seniors join the ranks of alumni as we celebrated their achievements and encouraged them to continue to apply themselves in the areas of goodness, discipline and knowledge. And in new student enrollment, we welcomed 59 new students for the 2014-2015 school year. In our development efforts, the annual Academic Advancement Fund saw growth of over 25% percent. In fact, this past fiscal year alone, we saw over 300 donors stepping up their financial contributions for a combined value of $28,000. And through our inaugural Parent Party Fundraising Receptions, we were able to equip the faculty with Chromebooks, laptops that use Chrome OS as its operating system, offering a cost-effective, yet versatile tool specifically designed and geared for the educational system. But maintaining the status quo is not enough to ensure the success of carrying out our mission. Please help us ensure a vibrant Latin School now and in the future as we continue to grow the success story. Please also know that your financial support is never taken for granted, but rather always humbly received. May the Lord bless you and your families. Sincerely yours in Christ, Mo Woltering Headmaster

What Will Your legacy Be?

Natasha Rodriguez

As our AAF's theme this year of "it's your alma mater, your legacy, your Covington Latin," suggests, the Latin School legacy is something that belongs to all alumni of this special place.

The Bishop Francis William Howard Legacy Society, named in honor of the founder of Covington Latin School, recognizes our benefactors who have remembered the school through their estate plan. Carrying forth the mission of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge to students would not be possible without the gifts we receive from our alumni of the school. Whether you are considering a bequest, a charitable trust or another type of planned gift, the impact of your gift can be transformative. To take the first steps towards creating your Covington Latin School legacy, please contact Carl Goodmonson at 859-291-7044 or carl.goodmonson@covingtonlatin.org

During his time in Russia last winter as a commentator on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi for NBC/Universal, students had the opportunity to Skype with him and ask questions about the experience. His approachable nature and witticisms caught on with students quickly and it was a highlight of the school year. But for Schaefer, it’s been a career path he certainly didn’t anticipate during his time at Latin School. While his accomplishments include serving in the Army’s Special Forces, receiving his Master’s in Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia studies from Harvard and becoming an award-winning author, Schaefer readily admits that he had no idea what to do after flying from the proverbial nest of Latin School.

‘81

“I was scared of college – and of making such a monumental choice. It’s terrifying to try to figure out ‘what am I going to do with the rest of my life’ when you’re not even 20 years old,” he said. So after starting college classes on subjects he thought he “should” be studying, he veered off that path and joined the Army.

Since Schaefer never intended to make a career out of the military, he pursued things during his tenure that he found interest and challenge in. “That’s why I went into Special Forces, and that’s why I never was bored,” he explained. It was through these hands-on experiences that he realized it was the knowledge he had obtained from Latin School that proved invaluable. “I hated math at CLS, but learned to love it once I became a Special Forces Engineer because it became a necessary tool to design and build things- and to blow up stuff! You can’t do complex demolitions without geometry and chemistry,” he said. That same core background served him well in the languages. “And even though I wasn’t particularly skilled at languages during my time at Latin School, I ended up using all those skills later on. At one time, I was arguing the finer points of a nuclear treaty between Russia and the U.S. in -30 degree weather in the middle of Siberia- and won- all in Russian.”

The challenges that Schaefer encountered in Special Forces ranged across the spectrum, but there was key takeaway he gleaned from combining his academic career at CLS and his military career as Special Forces. “There isn’t anything I can’t do as long as I apply myself in the areas of goodness, discipline, and knowledge,” he said. As Schaefer’s years of expertise and study began to add up in the areas of insurgency and counterterrorism, he began to write. “I just starting writing so I could ‘correct’ all the mistakes and inaccuracies being thrown about at that time,” he said. The final product became The Insurgency in Chechnya and the North Caucasus, From Gazavat to Jihad. His work has been placed on the “Top 150 Books on Terrorism and Counterterrorism” list and the “Best of” annual list of Kirkus Reviews. When asked what he might like to impart to those who are attending CLS now, he paused to reflect that “young minds aren’t really ready for wisdom; they are ready for experience.” But in true Schaefer form, he found a way to relay a few nuggets to the next generation of Latin School leaders.

“ONE- it will not always be this bad/good and there will come a time when life will be WAY worse/better-I swear- so just be ready. TWO- regardless how invincible you are, your parents love you dearly and can’t live without you, so please be careful the next time you’re contemplating that bungee jump/sorority party/ questionable ‘friend’ or feeling pressure to do something you don’t really want to do. THREE- Be smarter than me. Instead of running away to the Army because you are unsure of what you want to do, invest some time into figuring out what you really like to do- and do it BEFORE you start to make big decisions about your life. Read What Color is My Parachute (maybe the teen version) and do all the exercises (yes, they’re stupid, I know, but do them anyways) and it will really help you to know what you will want to study in college and what you want in life. You might still end up in the Army- but you might find out that being a foreign service officer or an economist would be more fun, especially if green isn’t your color.”

“The more I prayed, the clearer it became. I felt a call to priesthood at a young age, and that feeling continued to grow where I couldn’t ignore it,” said Stenger. During his time at Latin School, Stenger credits the spiritual foundation in his daily work in assisting him to discern his calling — the most important of which was the opportunity to serve Mass with the Bishop as a Pontifical Server. “That opportunity drew me more and more to Mass which is an essential role of priesthood and put me in a position where I was with other priests and seminarians,” he said. Stenger’s four years of studying Latin while a student at CLS is also proving to be an invaluable asset as he studies canon law. It’s an appreciation for the classics that he is just now bearing witness to the fruits of that appreciation.

Father Ryan stenger ’06 was ordained into the priesthood in april and celebrated his first Mass at the Cathedral. a notable milestone indeed, but also notable in that stenger was the first alum from Covington latin school in over 20 years to enter the priesthood.

For Stenger, to be the public face of the Catholic faith as a priest is an exceptional responsibility. “You are a representative of God and his Church. We all need help, understanding, and forgiveness. A priest is able to help make the Lord present in the Eucharist. His Presence in the Holy Eucharist is both a mystery and a sign of contradiction to modern society but also an honor and great blessing. It is also a sign of hope that the Lord continues to take care of His flock.” With compassion and zest for his calling, Stenger also brings good humor. When asked about his interests he joked, “I have boring priest interests — I like to read about history and canon law. I do like to golf just don’t have enough time to do it!” In the coming year, Stenger is looking forward to finishing his studies in canon law and being home in the diocese of Covington. He is eager to begin his ministry full-time with a special emphasis on the importance of the sacraments in daily life.
