APRIL 2013

Will we see the sun this month?

W

elcome to the April issue of Covered Local.

So, the sun seemed to skip us for most of March. I saw a post on Facebook about two weeks ago, which showed people sunbathing on the beach this time last year in Brighton. Hopefully, this means that we will have an amazing summer as winter seems to be never ending! By now, most of us would have over indulged in chocolate or at least treated ourselves to a little bit of an egg! So if your feeling a little guilty, why not contact one of the fitness experts that advertise with us and let them help you burn off those few extra calories. This month also see’s the London Marathon. For any of you that are taking part, we wish you the best of luck! As like every year, I promise I will do it next time! As a Netherne resident, I just wanted to say a quick thank you to Micheal Maddox who has now moved to pastures new. Hopefully this time he will be able to enjoy his retirement. Micheal was the key point of contact for many people living on Netherne and through his hard work and dedication has helped to make Netherne a wonderful place to live. Our Famous Captain Ted competition not only has you winning your very own Captain Ted, we are also giving away a Bodyshop hamper worth £50. Have a look on page 73 to see if you can guess where he is. This month Ted was again helped on his travels by local history man Martin Miles. Each month Martin will be sharing with us the history of the location of where TED was. To read about last months location turn to page 72.

WIN A BOTTLE OF MOET Plus great Free Snooker & more SEE PAGE 56

Don’t forget Ted has his own Facebook page now. Follow us on Facebook for more details: coveredlocalCR5 Our winner of last months Captain Ted competition, was Christiane Gross from Coulsdon. Christiane won a Captain Ted Bear plus a £50 Body shop Hamper. Our “Business Of The Month” winner, Woodcote Green Nurseries received a FREE half page advert which can be found on page 27. To enter this month, all you have to do is email us your details and we will enter you into the draw. We also have a new Food writer for Covered Local from this month. Reneé will be sharing with us, some of her recipes and great food related articles. Why not have a look at page 52 for her first months recipes. We have also teamed up with Yours locally. Yours locally brings all of the local produce suppliers into one handy place for us to buy. A lot of the ingredients from Ren’s recipes can be purchased from here. We hope you will agree that its so much tastier having local food rather than food that has traveled hundreds of miles before it gets to our plates. We have had another great month taking on new advertisers from in and around the CR5 area. If you are contacting any of our advertisers, please mention where you saw their advert, as it helps us to continue to bring you Covered Local every month. As like every month, we need your support to let us know about any upcoming events. We can then have them listed within our diary section, which will encourage more people to attend. We hope that you all have an amazing April and that you enjoy what we have put together for you!

Local Produce

for Schools Initiative

O

ur ‘Local Produce for Schools’ Initiative aims to get Schools using local produce in their menus and break-time snacks. Local produce by the very nature of being grown locally and not traveling half way around the globe - is healthier. Simple. By using local produce not only will we be giving our children healthier food and nutritionally balanced meals, we will also be educating our children on where their food comes from no, not the supermarket shelves! Fields, local fields! What is the point in feeding our children healthy food at home, when they go to school and eat food which is over processed and low in nutritional content? We know schools have tight budgets and opt for bulk purchased and bulk contract catered meals and we want to change this. With recent reports the over-processing and mislabeling of our food has been put in the spotlight, however, this is not a new phenomena. There have been concerns for years about the power of supermarkets; their bulk purchasing, pushing down prices and forcing producers to cut corners. Their misrepresentation of products and mis-labelling etc. Our Time for Change & Did You Know pages on our website give details of the impact of this on our health, our economies and our future generations. We’ve heard it reported in the press, most notably through schemes initiated by celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver, that the cost of school’s meals can be as little as £0.50p per meal with very little nutritional content, nor range on offer. We also hear that Obesity levels are on the increase, as are Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer related illnesses. We believe that by introducing Local produce into school meals and break-time snacks we can reduce these alarming increases as well as educate our future generations on; •

Where their food actually comes from

How they can grow their own and what they can do with locally grown produce

The importance of and how to prepare balanced, healthy meals themselves

Yours Locally has teamed up with a Local Contract Catering company - Taste, a Local Nutritionist - Snack Check and a Local Food Academy - Four Gables Food Academy and between us, we will be contacting Local Schools to encourage them to work with us on our initiative. How can you help? Are you a parent concerned about the food your child is eating at school? Would you like to see Local Produce introduced into your child’s school and know your child is eating healthier food during the day? If the answer is yes, then we need your help. We need parents to email us with details of their child’s school, with contact names at the school so we can approach the school with the solution - Balanced, healthy, affordable and nutritional meals made using Local Produce! The more parents who get involved, we will have a better chance of making this initiative succeed with our children being provided healthy, nutritional food in school. *** PLEASE NOTE; WE WILL NOT DISCLOSE YOUR YOUR CONTACT DETAILS TO THE SCHOOLS WE APPROACH, HOWEVER, WE DO NEED THESE DETAILS TO ENSURE WE ARE RECEIVING UNIQUE PARENTS WHO ARE CONCERNED AND WANT TO SEE A CHANGE TO THEIR CHILDRENS SCHOOL MEALS. *** Lets make a difference to our future generations...

AN AMAZING NEW SHOWROOM FOR CHANDLERS IN COULSDON

C

handlers was opened 5 years ago by Q Chandler. He wanted to create something for himself rather than working for high end retailers. Q who is 45, has a creative background as trained as a chef, and then later went on to become a designer.

Since Chandlers opened its doors 5 years ago business has gone through the roof, exceeding all of Q’s expectations, so..…. In February 2013 Q made a big decision to re-vamp the showroom and strip it back to nothing and start again. The transformation is amazing in such a short time and he is very proud of the team for working so hard and doing so well. By using his eye for design Q has managed to make the showroom look twice the size as it was previously, adding a stunning new selection of award winning kitchen and bathroom displays, along with new flooring, ceilings, lighting and other new displays. The showroom is a working showroom, so not only will you be able to see the kitchen of your dreams, you can also test out some of the latest gadgets to go with it! Q has brought together a great range of both kitchen and bathroom furnitures all into one place with the availability to view samples of all the different colour options, lights, tiles and appliances. It was really great to pop in to see Q and to see how excited he was about opening this amazing showroom in Coulsdon. We want to wish Q the best of luck and to say what an amazing transformation they have achieved! The team at Chandlers must be very proud to have this showroom at the centre of their company. Chandlers have now torn down the posters that have covered the windows for these past few weeks, to reveal the amazing new Showroom to the public! They re-opened on the 28th March 2013 and it went with a bang, a great re-launch party, lots of people and great feedback about the new look and feel for this ever growing local business!!

About Chandlers With over 30 Years Experience,Chandlers Home Design can only be described as a business made up of ‘a coming together of skilled professionals’, our family orientated business with over 30 years experience is made up of several different trades and business sectors all brought together in one place. CL The Voice UK

The Voice UK ‘With our four global superstars back on board, an unrivalled standard of vocal talent and the added excitement of the ‘Steals’ and ‘Knockouts’, it is set to be an extraordinary series.’

BY HEIDI BRIDGES

S

ingers Will.i.am, Jessie J, Tom Jones and Danny O’ Donoghue will all be back in their revolving chairs as the show’s coaches. But there have been a few changes to the format this year. This year’s series will feature just three live shows, while earlier stages will borrow elements from the successful US version of the programme. One dramatic change will see judges ‘steal’ a contestant from their rivals. The first series pulled in strong

12

coveredlocal.co.uk | APRIL 2013

audiences during its early stages, when the coaches chose contenders in blind auditions. They only set eyes on the singers once they’d decided to champion them, at which point their chairs spun round to face the stage. During this year’s ‘battle’ stages, in which each individual coach selects their final line-up of singers for the live shows, a losing contestant may be poached for a rival team. Another change BBC bosses are hoping will retain viewers is that each artist must pick a ‘killer song’ during the new

‘knockouts’ stage of the competition. Then the public will be in control to decide the winners during the live shows. Executive producer Moira Ross said: ‘We can’t wait for ‘The Voice UK’ to return to Saturday nights. ‘With our four global superstars back on board, an unrivaled standard of vocal talent and the added excitement of the ‘Steals’ and ‘Knockouts’, it is set to be an extraordinary series.’ >>>>>>>>>>>

CL The Voice UK SO FIRSTLY, WILL.I.AM, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE SECOND SERIES?

definitely think it’s more exciting with the way the format is. We interact more now, with the steals, we have a chance to then go back into the kind of the pitching – it’s exciting.

SIR TOM JONES: It worked so well the first time, why not do it a second

SIR TOM JONES: There’s two new things that they’ve brought in. I think they realised last time with the blind auditions then you get the battles, after that then it went into more sort of what we’ve seen before type of thing, you know, on other shows. So now they’ve bought two new things

time? As long as it’s the four of us the same, the same four.

into it that changes it up a bit. So that’s good.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE FIRST SEASON WAS ALMOST LIKE A DRESS REHEARSAL?

DANNY, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE SECOND SERIES OF ‘THE VOICE’?

SIR TOM JONES: Well, when you go into anything new, that’s the way it feels. You don’t know how it’s going to work. You don’t know whether it’s going to work anyway. You don’t know what’s going to happen – but it did.

DANNY: I feel great. I feel really, really good. I just got down from Newcastle last night, The Script are on tour at the minute so it’s a really, really busy year. But since last year, it’s been incredible. The reason why we wanted to come back, all of us wanted to come back, is because we’ve never given up on anything. We talked to the BBC, they let us know about the new changes that are going to help the show along a little bit better. And from what I’ve seen so far it’s incredible – really, really. It’s better than last year by far. It really, really is.

Image credit@: BBC/ wall to wall

WILL.I.AM: I just saw the clip today and I was really thrilled and pleased with the level of entertainment it has, and then the singers, how great they were. Because a lot of times you think what you heard was amazing and then you see the taping of it and it’s like, ‘Wow that really sucked. I don’t know what I was thinking earlier.’

sense but we really care and we’re passionate and we’re very busy. So, for me, I know there was a point where scheduling didn’t work and I have to really take into consideration that I haven’t even put out a second album yet and that needed to be done at some point. And the filming takes a long time but I’m so happy that it’s worked out and we all did it again.

But the singers are just as good as I remember them to be and the show is packed and full of entertainment. I’m really happy about it. VIEWING FIGURES WERE A PROBLEM WITH THE FIRST SERIES – ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THIS SECOND SERIES? WILL.I.AM: No, it was nice weather when the viewings dropped so I’m glad there’s weather things that we could fall back on and let people know why the viewings dropped. I don’t think it was the show, I really think it was because the sun was out and people wanted to be outside – that’s what I’m saying in my head. So I’m just praying for rain! [laughs] JESSIE AND TOM, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE SECOND SERIES? JESSIE J: I think it was important that we all made a point that we’re in it to win it, not in that kind of

14

JESSIE J: I think the beauty and the fear of everything in the industry is that you can’t do it unless you test it. SIR TOM JONES: Right. JESSIE J: You can’t put out a single without people hearing it to know if they like it or not. And sometimes it’s not right and sometimes it is. And I think anything that perhaps, I wouldn’t say didn’t work, but wasn’t to certain people’s taste or felt like it went on too long, has been really re-evaluated for this series. And I

WHY IS IT BETTER? DANNY: Why? Have you seen it? NO. >>>>>>>>>>

CL Movie Interview you can do is then polish it and just make it better and better. So it’s a nicer place for us to be. REGGIE: Definitely. It’s a far more comfortable watch I think and it’s much more comfortable for everyone because we all know what we’re doing and everyone knows what to expect. THERE ARE SOME BIG CHANGES THIS SERIES – CAN YOU EXPLAIN THOSE?

DANNY: You’ve got to go check it out then. The reason why – the format changes are the number one. I think the coaches are all relaxed this year and there’s a lot more better banter going on, you know, with the amount that auditioned last year there was a smaller pool to draw from but this year over 30,000 people auditioned so there’s everybody and their mother showing up to the shows. But you know what? All of them can sing. And I think the talent on this one is definitely better than it was last year. I think the peaka and the troughs are as well, so when people are bad, they’re really bad but when people are good, they’re incredible. A CERTAIN OTHER TALENT SHOW DIDN’T DO SO WELL IN THE RATINGS LAST YEAR – IS THAT GOOD FOR YOU THAT ‘THE X FACTOR’ REALLY DIDN’T DO VERY WELL? DANNY: No I think getting into a race of what’s the better show, I think we’re all going to lose on that one. I think part of the problem last year was putting us up against different talent shows. We’re a singing show, true and foremost a singing show – we’re not an entertainment show. I think what I would like is if the press would leave that race out of it and just concentrate on ‘The Voice’ and the internal things that go on on ‘The Voice’ because it’s a great show to celebrate.

16

HOLLY AND REGGIE, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE SECOND SERIES OF ‘THE VOICE’? REGGIE: Really excited. HOLLY: Really excited. REGGIE: Yeah, really, really excited. I mean it’s the same team and everyone’s a year older with a year’s more worth of banter so it’s yeah, a bit more exciting. HOLLY: I can’t believe it’s been a year. It just doesn’t feel like it’s been long enough for us all back doing it again. But these things roll round and we’re all ready for it and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s going to be really good. DOES IT FEEL MORE NATURAL NOW THAT YOU’VE HAD THAT YEAR TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER? HOLLY: I think that it’s not even about getting to know each other, I think that when you start a brand new show, you’re trying to sell a brand new format to an audience who have never seen it before, never heard of it before comes with its own sort of troubles in itself. Because you’ve got to explain everything. So anytime you do a second series, everybody knows what they’re getting so all

coveredlocal.co.uk | APRIL 2013

HOLLY: Well I’m not sure how much we’re allowed to say, literally, I was just walking up going, ‘How much can we say?’ And they’re like, ‘Nothing.’ So I don’t know how much we can say. There have been changes made and that’s the beauty of being two series in is that you watch the first one back and you saw what everybody liked and what didn’t quite work so well and then you can make changes. So at the moment, it’s kind of a wait and see. But they’re good. REGGIE: If you saw the tape today you’ll know that it’s good, that’s all we can say right now. WHAT ABOUT THE LEVEL OF PERFORMERS THIS YEAR? DO YOU THINK BECAUSE IT IS THE SECOND SERIES THAT PEOPLE KNOW IT HAS GONE UP? REGGIE: Well I think we’ve attracted a better standard of singer by and large. I think when they’re good they’re incredible this time, whereas last time they were very, very good this time they are out of the park. So there are some people who are going to make you cry. You are going to sob when you watch it this time because of the strength of some of the singers. HOLLY: I can’t answer that because I think they’re all good. I mean literally I’m like someone’s nan, I’m like, ‘They were brilliant darling, they were so good, they got up there...’ So I’m like useless when it comes to that. As far as I’m concerned they’re brilliat.

GARDEN VIEW

S

Can You Dig It ?

oil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it?

One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just

26

coveredlocal.co.uk | APRIL 2013

added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house.

CL Kathy Innes- Fresh outlook

WHY USE A GARDEN Landscaping Company?

A

fter a particularly long miserable winter, the sun begins to assert itself again and the slumbering garden awakens. Spring is finally here! Marking the turn of a season and sense of renewal, we find ourselves emerging from our houses, only to discover our gardens unloved and unused, abandoned the previous year. Our cramped patios are cracking-up, we are struggling with our slopes (where is the useable flat space?), not to mention the badly positioned perennials we put in last summer that now appear to be dead. It is all very stressful and so we retreat back into our houses… only to discover we could do with a bit more living space! If this sounds familiar, perhaps you should consider consulting a professional garden landscaping company.

About Kathy

Originally a psychologist, Kathy Innes worked for some years in the fashion industry in London and internationally, before starting her own gardening business in 2003. Her background in both professional client service as well as her practical experience in how real gardens succeed, gives her a special understanding of the importance of working closely on the development of the design brief as well as creating workable gardens – that are to be lived in and enjoyed! Kathy believes outdoor space is a precious commodity that is so limited in towns and cities that it makes sense to enjoy every square inch you have. Being able to use your outside space throughout the year, regardless of the season or whether there’s daylight, is an enjoyable and stylish way of extending your home. “Gardens are not just lawns and herbaceous borders - gardens are for people.”

28

“We appreciate that planning your own garden can be daunting. Invariably, our clients know how they want to use their outdoor space, but are unsure of how to bring their ideas together and create an imaginative yet functional environment. That’s where we can help!” (Kathy)

Fresh Outlook Over the last ten years, FO have established themselves as a commercially successful and highlyrespected garden landscape business within the industry. “Our business has grown as an organic structure, which has allowed us to develop our knowledge and true understanding of the sense of place.” Kathy’s close involvement in all aspects of the business ensures a personal touch is retained.

Service and Teamwork Fresh Outlook offers a full-service garden landscaping consultancy to clients looking for a garden which is both beautiful and practical. Their services range from the development of the design concept to the construction, planting and styling of a landscape. All aspects of installation are carried out in-house, by a small experienced and skilful team, ensuring the tightest quality control and strong focus on the unique vision. A crucial member of the landscaping team is Mike Kennedy. Working as her Construction Manager since 2005, Mike has a strong background in the civil engineering and building industry (more than 30years!) Mike helps to transform Kathy’s design ideas (often the flick of a pen!) into reality.

A Fresh Outlook Garden Typically Fresh Outlook gardens are recognised for their bold underlying structure, softened with full and naturalistic planting to reflect the tastes and requirements of their clients, their homes and the surrounding environment. Planting is selected to be sympathetic to the environment, carefully matching plants to growing conditions to ensure their gardens bring pleasure year after year “working with nature rather than fighting it.”

“Whether you need a small garden re-vamp or a large-scale transformation, we are happy to help with any stage of a project and to suit any budget!

CL St George’s Day

St George’s Day H

e’s most famous for slaying a dragon, but how much do we know about St George, the patron saint of England?

Born in Eastern Turkey in AD 270 to Christian parents, George later moved to Palestine where he became a soldier in the Roman army. He subsequently rebelled against the Roman Emperor for his persecution of Christians. Imprisonment and torture followed, but George refused to denounce his Christian faith. Enraged at this, the Emperor had George dragged through the streets, and beheaded him on 23rd April AD 303. George’s alleged encounter with the dragon occurred in Libya. The dragon is said to have built its nest by a fresh water spring and was offered sheep by townsfolk to distract him whilst collecting water. With all the sheep gone, they decided to offer a maiden instead. The lot fell on the poor crown princess, but at the moment of offering, George supposedly came by on his white stallion, dismounted and slew the beast with his sword. George is identified with English ideals of charity, chivalry and courage, and thus symbolises the very essence of ‘Englishness’. Campaigners are currently working to get St George’s Day recognised as a national holiday, but for now, it is traditionally celebrated by flying the English flag, wearing a red rose and singing ‘Jerusalem’ on the Sunday nearest the 23rd April!

CUMBERBATCH “I GOT LIVE TWEETED AS TO WHAT I WAS DOING IN MY OWN HOME”

The ‘Sherlock’ star talks about being back working with Martin Freeman on the new series of the show plus how a neighbour recently cyberstalked him. He also talks about how he is dealing with fame both here and in the States and how he is coping with the huge interest from ‘Star Trek’ fans ahead of the release of ‘Into Darkness’ this summer...

BY VICKY DEARDEN

B

enedict Cumberbatch was at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, where his series ‘Parade’s End’ picked up the Best TV Drama Award. At the event he also spoke about being back working with Martin Freeman for the new series of ‘Sherlock’. The popular TV double act posted a picture of themselves mucking around [Freeman had grapes in his eyes] as they began making the highly-anticipated next three episodes of the BBC One drama. The BBC One Twitter account teased: “Sherlock read-through over, plenty of surprises in store for series three!”

Cumberbatch stars soon in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, which is directed by JJ Abrams. Her Benedict also talks how a neighbour recently cyber-stalked him, how he is dealing with fame both here and in the States and how he is coping with the huge interest from ‘Star Trek’ fans ahead of the release of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ this summer... SO HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING BEING BACK WITH THE ‘SHERLOCK’ CREW? BENEDICT: Great, it was really good fun. It was lovely to be back, really lovely to be back. DID ANYTHING SHOCK YOU?

The actor also said he would like to continue making the programme beyond its fourth series, but that this is entirely dependent on his availability along with that of co-star Martin Freeman and show-runner Steven Moffat.

BENEDICT: Erm how much Martin’s eyes look like grapes sometimes [laughs]. Yeah.

He added: ‘It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.’

BENEDICT: I’m not at liberty to comment.

Cumberbatch and Freeman have found major Hollywood success since ‘Sherlock’ began, Freeman starring in ‘The Hobbit’ and

BENEDICT: Not really, not without spoiling it but you are in for an absolute stonker of a resurrection. It’s going to be a treat. It’s a

CL Benedict Cumberbatch terrific episode. And I’ve just turned round from doing another job so I’m sort of as fresh to it as people probably will be when they first view it. So I’m kind of in that privileged position of getting a head start on you guys. But I really recommend waiting to find out any more. It’s going to be great.

BENEDICT: I’m not going to tell you that! You’re as bad as the neighbour – your the people that feed the appetite for this stuff.

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST FAN ENCOUNTER THAT YOU’VE EVER HAD?

BENEDICT: No, they were telling the world what I was doing in my own home, which was quite interesting.

BENEDICT: Sometimes, it just depends. Sometimes people are really respectful and other times it’s just the excitement gets the better of them and there’s a lot of stuff that goes on, rather like yesterday’s event, that’s sort of remote. I find that the weirdest. I understand why people feel a little bit inhibited but it’s kind of an odd world we’re living in whereby people walk along with a phone like that pretending to be on the phone and then look at the photograph and then look back at you. It’s very strange that. Just ask and unless I’m in a real rush I’m fine for it. I’ll stop and take a photo.

HOW DO YOU REACT TO THAT KIND OF THING?

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST DOWNSIDE TO FAME?

BENEDICT: Well, how would you react? It is a bit strange. But yeah, how would you react?

BENEDICT: Oh you know, I’m enjoy-

BENEDICT: Well I got live tweeted the other day as to what I was doing in my own home – that was pretty strange. But that wasn’t a direct encounter but then that’s the modern world for you. WHAT THEY ASKED YOU WHAT YOU WERE DOING?

SO DO YOU GET STOPPED IN THE SUPERMARKET WHEREVER YOU GO?

ing myself at the moment. It would be really churlish to complain about anything to be honest. I’m very, very fortunate to be in the position that I’m in.

AND YOU HAVE A MASSIVE HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER COMING - ARE YOU READY FOR THE TREKKIES? BENEDICT: I think the Trekkies have already started. I can’t wait – I’m really excited to see the whole of the film. I think we’re in for a good film in the summer. It’s really exciting. AND DO YOU THINK JJ ABRAMS SHOULD DO ‘STAR WARS’? BENEDICT: Should do Star Wars? He is doing Star Wars. WOULD YOU LOVE A ROLE IN THE FILM? BENEDICT: I don’t know. HOW LONG CAN ‘SHERLOCK’ KEEP GOING FOR?

I think we’ve agreed to two more but I could get in trouble for saying that in front of the national press. I genuinely don’t know.

BENEDICT: No you don’t call the police, you just kind of go, well, maybe there might be a way for a message to get back to them – and that’s what happened. DID YOU WORK OUT WHO IT WAS? BENEDICT: I’m not saying. Not saying. HOW DID THEY KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING IN YOUR HOUSE?

CL Benedict Cumberbatch BENEDICT: I don’t know, again I don’t know. We’re not sure. We love doing it as we’re doing it at the moment in the format that we’re doing it at the moment. It just depends on Martin and I’s availability. We’d love to keep it going. It depends on Steven’s availability as well. I’d love to keep it going for as long as possible. I think we all would. SO YOU’VE AGREED TO ONE MORE AND THEN SEE HOW IT GOES? BENEDICT: I think we’ve agreed to two more but I could get in trouble for saying that in front of the national press. I genuinely don’t know. All I know at the moment is we’re doing these three. That is the honest truth. I just don’t know what there is beyond it. But yeah. DID YOU READ ANY OF THE ONLINE THEORIES ABOUT HOW HE WAS GOING TO SURVIVE? BENEDICT: A few but it’s fun to

just let that all spin and just see what happens really. So I didn’t engage with many of them but some of them are brilliant and we’ll see. DO YOU KNOW ROUGHLY WHEN IT WILL BE AIRING? BENEDICT: I think they’re talking about the winter, as in, near or around Christmas, but I’m not sure when exactly no. AND WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AFTER ‘SHERLOCK’? BENEDICT: I’m not sure quite yet. I’ve got an inkling but can’t talk about it yet. DO YOU GET TOGETHER SOCIALLY WITH MARTIN? BENEDICT: Well, when we can. It’s a bit crazy. He’s been away from home and two small children and Amanda for a long, long part of the last two

years. So that’s obviously a very precious commodity when he gets time to get back home. I leave them to it a bit. WHAT SORT OF THINGS DO YOU GET UP TO IF YOU GET TIME AWAY FROM THE CAMERAS? BENEDICT: Well we often weirdly end up socialising at things like this, which is a bit bizarre. But yeah, we like our music. I’m trying to think what the last thing... I mean the work schedule is crazy when we’re doing the show. And then afterwards it is usually at events like this that we get to cut loose a little bit. FINALLY, BACK TO ‘STAR TREK’ – ARE YOU FINDING IT HARD NOT TO SPILL THE BEANS ON WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THAT? BENEDICT: Oh no I’m loving keeping the secret! ENDS

Three feisty cars for the new 13 registration plates

F

ROM 1 MARCH the 13 registration plates were available for all new cars. Many of us secretly yearn for the latest plate because we like to show we’re driving what’s ‘up-to-theminute’ in terms of automotive technology and style. They are also important for business as manufacturers tend to offer deals on cars with new plates, so it’s always worth considering when you’re buying a car. With that in mind, we’ve chosen three of the most up-to-date sets of wheels that might whet your appetite for doing some sporty, executive-style motoring this year – or at least until September when the 63 registration kicks in!

2013 Porsche Cayman The third generation Cayman aims to set the class benchmark for driving performance. Its longer wheelbase and new chassis further enhances the credentials of the mid-engined sports coupe. Since its debut in 2005, the Cayman has earned a reputation as a significant driver’s car. For the latest model, the two-seater has been developed from the ground up and - after the 911 Carrera and Boxster roadster - is the third sports car model series from Porsche to feature lightweight body design. The German company offers two flat six ‘boxer’ engines in the Cayman, a 165 mph, 2.7-litre and a 176mph, 3.4-litre, which both combine ample shove with high power in the upper engine rev range. The 2013 Cayman employs a six-speed manual transmission and a Sport button as standard that lets you choose between sport-oriented tuning and that which is optimised for fuel efficiency. The model arrives in Porsche Centres in March 2013 and is priced from £39,694.

The 2013 Range Rover takes the capabilities of the marque’s flagship to new heights, with greater luxury and improved handling on all terrains. With order books now open, the 2013 Range Rover is being introduced in 170 markets worldwide and produced in a high-tech manufacturing facility at Solihull in the West Midlands. While recognisable as a Range Rover, the SUV takes a step forward with a smoother and more streamlined profile. The cabin retains the characteristic strong, architectural forms, and these are emphasised by elegant surfaces which are executed using the finest leathers and veneers. With over 118mm more legroom, the rear compartment offers serious space and comfort, with the option of a two-seat Executive Class seating package for the ultimate in rear-seat luxury. Pricing starts from £71,295 for the 130mph Range Rover Vogue 3.0L TDV6, rising to £98,395 for the 140mph Range Rover Autobiography 5.0L Supercharged.

2013 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet Audi has removed the wraps from its most exhilarating RS convertible to date – the new RS 5 Cabriolet. Complementing the beauty and brawn of the RS 5 silhouette with a fast-acting lightweight fabric roof, the open-top offers the best environment in which to savour the hot-blooded 4.2-litre V8 shared with the RS 4 Avant. The lightweight ‘acoustic hood’ offers sound absorption that runs its fixed head counterpart remarkably close, and at the press of a button opens and closes fully automatically in 15 seconds and 17 seconds respectively – even at speeds of up to 31mph. Not surprisingly the body benefits from the same subtle revisions that brought the RS 5 Coupe into line with new generation A5 models recently. In the Cabriolet, a subtle matt carbon fixed spoiler lip on the boot lid boosts downforce and, inside, the cabin includes a new flat-bottomed RS three-spoke steering wheel. The 4.2-litre V8 powers the Cabriolet from rest to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, and where possible can take it to 155mph. Deliveries of the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet have begun in Germany, where its base price is 88,500 euros (£70,154). UK-specific pricing has yet to be confirmed and will be announced by Audi shortly.

CREATE HISTORY AT CHIPSTEAD I can’t explain how proud I am to stand alongside Mum in her year as Lady Captain and I know she feels the same.

O

n Sunday 3rd March Stephen O’Brien took over the captaincy at Chipstead Golf Club and joined his mother Beryl who currently holds the position of Lady Captain.

This is the first time in the clubs 107 year history that a Mother and Son have held these positions at the same time. Stephen who has been at member at Chipstead since 2001 stated “ Standing on the first tee on Sunday morning as Captain of Chipstead Golf Club for the first time was definitely the most nervous I have been during my golfing career but in the same token it was also my proudest moment in golf. I can’t explain how proud I am to stand alongside Mum in her year as Lady Captain and I know she feels the same. It will be a truly wonderful experience and I look forward to all the Club matches and functions that we will attend together”. This is a real family affair at Chipstead as Stephen’s twin brother Michael, father John and son Matthew are also club members.

CL London marathan

2013

London Marathon

This year’s London Marathon will be held on April 21st. This iconic event first took place over 30 years ago, in 1981. It was the brainchild of John Disley and Chris Brasher who after taking part in the New York Marathon, wondered if London could stage such a festival. 7,747 runners took part in the first London Marathon, whilst in 2012 there were over 37,000 participants. The Marathon is now a calendar highlight for competitors, spectators and charities alike. Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich will take part this year and is expected to complete the 26.2 mile course in just over 2 hours For most of us a marathon would prove too gruelling, but there are half marathons, 10k and 5k runs or sub 5k events which anyone can enter. There are running events nearly every weekend somewhere in Britain. Running has many benefits, firstly it’s free. Once you have your basic kit, it costs nothing to simply ‘go out for a run.’ As you are not tied to a specific class or opening times, you can go running whenever you please. Studies extol the health benefits. Runners tend to be stronger and live longer. Regular exercise, along with a healthy balanced diet, can also reduce your risk of cancer. So how does a fledgling runner get started? Most beginners’ guides suggest doing a combination of run/ walk/run on your first outings and building up your distance gradually. You should always stretch, warm up and cool down and ensure you are hydrated. You should not run too fast. You should always be able to maintain a conversation and not breathe too heavily. Training programmes suggest that subject to satisfactory health, beginners could train to complete a 5k run within six weeks, training three times a week. Someone preparing for a marathon would probably have a training plan of at least 16 weeks. It’s important to have the correct equipment and in particular the right shoes. Specialists will use biomechanics, your weight, the surfaces you wish to run on and the shape of your feet as influencing factors when determining which shoes to recommend for you. Serious runners will alternate between two pairs of shoes during training, and shoes should be replaced after around 500 miles. Other items to consider include running socks, tights leggings or shorts, a stop watch, technical t shirt, a heart monitor, training log, drinks carrier, energy drinks and a lightweight jacket. Ladies will also require a high impact sports bra. Many find they are more committed to running if they have a training partner, and some join local running clubs for increased support and guidance. CRAMP Cramp is a common and usually harmless condition where muscles suddenly become tight and painful. Mostly cramps occur for no apparent reason, but certain things can trigger them such as pregnancy, exercise or some medications. During cramp the affected muscle fibres contract or shorten suddenly, causing pain. This spasm can last from a few seconds to several minutes. Afterwards the affected muscle might remain tender for a few hours. Most cases of cramp require no medical treatment and can be relieved by simply stretching the affected muscle. Applying warmth to the area can help too. Consult your doctor if you suffer frequent night-time cramps which affect your sleep, or if you have other symptoms such as numbness or swelling, which may mean you need blood or urine tests to rule out underlying medical conditions. Useful tips for night cramps: - Stretch your calf muscles before bed - Sleep with your feet rested against a pillow to keep them pointing upwards - If you sleep on your front, allow your feet to dangle over the edge of the bed so calf muscles are not tensed. -Keep sheets and blankets loose. -Wear bed socks to keep your feet toasty. Warm muscles are less likely to spasm.

CHOCOLATE ORANGE MOUSSE

Preparation time: 10-15 minutes | Chilling time 4 hours + Serves 4 INGREDIENTS:

150g good quality, high cocoa content dark chocolate 125ml double cream 3 eggs - separated Tbsp orange oil

METHOD:

1. Melt your chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the water isn’t too hot otherwise the chocolate will start separating and you’ll be left with an oily mess 2. Once the choc has melted remove from the heat and allow to cool for five mins, then slowly stir in the egg yolks one at a time 3. Add the orange oil, then fold in the cream 4. Whisk your egg whites until stiff, then gently fold into your chocolate mixture one tablespoonful at a time. You want as much of the air in your eggs as possible to be transferred to the mousse 5. Divide into small glasses or bowls and place in the fridge to set for at least four hours before serving TIP: SAVE TIME ON THE DAY BY MAKING THIS DESERT THE DAY BEFORE

LEG OF LAMB WITH BUTTERNUT SQUASH Serves 6 | Preperation time 15 mins | Cooking time 3 Hours INGREDIENTS: - 2-2.5kg whole leg of lamb - Tbsp finely chopped sage - Large knob of butter (sliced into 4 pieces) - 4 med sized red onions (peeled, left whole) - 4 large carrots (top, tailed, peeled and halved) - 1kg butternut squash (peeled, deseeded and cut into 6 chunky slices) - Freshly ground sea salt and black pepper - 2 tbsp port (optional)

METHOD:

1. Preheat the oven to 200C fan assisted/220C non-fan/Gas Mark 7 2. Slash the lamb skin four times with deep cuts, season with salt and pepper then cover with sage and put the butter slices into the cuts 3. Roast for 30 mins then remove from the oven- add the veg to the tray coating each piece with the buttery lamb juices. Place the lamb on top of the veg and return to the oven 4. Turn the heat down to 160C fan assisted/170C non-fan/Gas Mark 3 5. Roast for a further 30 mins per kilo for med-rare and 40 mins per kilo for med cooked meat 6. When your lamb is done, remove it from the tray and allow to rest for at least 30 mins 7. Transfer the butternut and 6 of the 8 carrot pieces to another tray. Return to the oven and turn the heat down to 130C fan assisted/140C non-fan/Gas Mark 1. This will keep the veg warm without cooking it any further 8. Tip the onions, remaining carrot and juices from the original tray along with the port (if you’re using) into your blender or food processor. Whiz on the high until nice and smooth. Transfer to a small saucepan and keep warm over a low heat until you are ready to serve 9. If you do not have a blender then mash the onion, carrot and juices up in the tray with a fork or potato masher. Once you have a thick pul stir in the port (water or stock would also work well if you do not want to use alcohol), then strain through a sieve and into a saucepan to keep warm- serve your lamb and gravy with the roasted butternut and carrots, along with a nice pile of seasonal veggies. Cauliflower, cabbage and kale are just marvellous at the moment. TIP: MAKE A FRESH MINT SAUCE FOR THE TABLE BY COMBINING A HANDFUL OF FINELY CHOPPED MINT, 2 TBSP COLD PRESSED OIL, 1 TBSP BALSAMIC VINEGAR AND 1 TBSP HONEY

FRESH THAI CURRY Preperation time: 10 mins | Cooking time 30mins | Serves 2 INGREDIENTS - Meat/veg - this recipe lends itself well to being poured all over whatever leftovers you have. Jasmine rice (cooked as per packet instructions) FOR THE SAUCE: - bunch of flat leaf parsley* - 200ml coconut milk - med sized red onion (peeled, left whole) - Red chili (for a fairly spicy curry use half a chili with a quarter of the seeds. - 2 cloves of garlic (peeled) - Stick of lemongrass - 2 inch piece of fresh ginger (peeled) - Juice of a lime - 3 tbsp Thai fish sauce - 1 tbsp honey (a good way to compliment the spice) - Tbsp sesame oil, plus extra for drizzling - Tsp soya sauce, plus extra for drizzling

METHOD:

1. Get your rice cooking before you do anything else; prepare as per packet instructions 2. Drizzle your onion with a little sesame oil and soya sauce, then place on small non-stick baking tray and roast for 30 mins in a hot preheated oven. When done tip the contents into your blender or food processor, along with all the other sauce ingredients. Whiz on the highest setting until smooth 3. If you do not have a blender you will need to pound your ingredients to a paste in a mortar & pestle, slowly adding the coconut milk at the end to transform the paste into a sauce 4. Add your meat and/or veg to a large saucepan along with the sauce. Cook gently over a low-med heat for around five minutes and serve over the cooked rice TIP: DOUBLE UP ON INGREDIENTS AND MAKE A BATCH FOR NOW AND A BATCH FOR ANOTHER TIME. THIS SAUCE KEEPS HAPPILY IN THE FRIDGE FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS

CL Home Tips

Tips for around the home Bleed Baby Bleed If your radiators feel cold at the top and warm at the bottom, it is likely that air trapped inside them – a common problem that can be fixed quite easily by bleeding them. First, determine which radiators are affected. Switch your central heating on, and then check that each radiator is heated uniformly. Any with cold spots will need bleeding. Before bleeding, turn off the central heating to prevent more air entering the system. Bleed the radiator by inserting a bleed key (supplied with your radiator and available at DIY stores) in the bleed valve at the top of the radiator, whilst holding a cloth or small bowl underneath to catch any leaking water. With your hand wrapped in a cloth for protection, slowly turn the key anticlockwise until a hissing sound occurs. This is the trapped air escaping. Once the hissing stops and water starts to drip out (usually after a few seconds), close the valve back up. Repeat this process for all affected radiators. Turn the central heating back on once finished, and check your radiators after a couple of hours to ensure they have a uniform temperature, and that no water is leaking from the bleed valve. Do this once a year to keep your central heating in tip-top condition.

Loft Insulation We all know that heat rises, so if your loft isn’t adequately insulated your home could lose as much as a quarter of its heat through the roof. This is why loft insulation is so important. There are four types to choose from. Mineral wool matting is sold in rolls and is laid between the joists, with a second layer placed at right angles to cover the joists. Rigid insulation boards can be laid in lofts used for storage. Laid on top of mineral wool, wooden boarding is then fitted on top of the insulation boards. Alternatively, floor boarding pre-bonded with insulation board is available. If your loft space is irregular use loose-fill insulation. Sold in bags, this is poured between the joists to the right depth. Finally loose, fire-retardant insulation material should be blown into loft areas that are hard to access. A professional should be hired for this job which takes no more than a few hours. In all other cases if you are experienced at DIY you should be able to fit the loft insulation yourself, but wear a protective mask and gloves if handling mineral wool. To get a list of possible installers go to the National Insulation Association website or call your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre free on 0800 512012.

FLEES

Cures and Prevention

o one wants fleas on their pet or in their home but unfortunately it often happens when you have a cat or a dog. Just killing the fleas on your pets is not enough; 95% of the flea life cycle takes place in your pet’s bedding and home surroundings such as carpets, soft furnishings, etc. To prevent re-infestation, you must break the life cycle of the flea. Fleas are small, brown, mobile insects which bite the skin and suck blood. They breed rapidly, often unnoticed and can quickly cause a major problem for pets. They can infest your home and can feed on humans. Dogs and cats usually become infested from contact with other animals, including wildlife such as birds, rodents etc., particularly during summer and autumn months. Prompt treatment is necessary, as flea bites cause severe irritation and pets often become allergic to flea saliva, leading to inflamed skin, sores and loss of coat.

most of their life cycle in pet bedding, carpets, rugs, furnishings, etc. A serious infestation can quickly occur in summer months and even in winter, in warm homes with central heating and fitted carpets. Fleas are carriers of tapeworm eggs and are a major cause of worm infestation in dogs and cats. If you discover that your pet has fleas it is very important to treat them for worms as well as fleas. In warm conditions, the life cycle of a flea can be completed in only 3 weeks, but may take up to 1 year or more. To prevent re-infestation, it is necessary to break this cycle, which is in 4 stages: Eggs: 50% of life cycle. Hundreds of eggs are laid, usually on pets, but fall off into bedding, carpets, furnishings, etc., where they soon hatch into larvae.

Constant scratching or biting of coat, twitching of back muscles, also skin and coat problems. Fleas and ‘flea dirt’ (tiny black droppings) may be seen when the coat is examined closely or combed out over damp paper, when a small reddish circle will form around the black spots. Flea bites on humans can be seen as small red spots up to 2.5cm (1 inch) apart. Fleas feed on dogs and cats, but spend

Larvae: 35% of life cycle. Larvae feed on organic matter (e.g., from flea droppings) then after a few days spin a cocoon and become pupae, hidden in the furnishings. Pupae: 10% of life cycle. May develop into adult fleas in a week, but can remain in this stage for many month. Adult Flea: 5% of life cycle. Emerges from it’s cocoon when temperature conditions are suitable, also in response to vibrations from pets or humans and jumps on to a host for the first of its meals. Eggs then start to be laid and the cycle begins again. There are 3 stages of complete flea control and Pets Galore Coulsdon have a full range of products for each stage. Your pet: Tablets, sprays, shampoos, powders and spot-on’s are all available in store Prevention: Collars and spot-on treatments are available to give long lasting protection against future infestations Your home: Carpet powders, household flea sprays, bombs and foggers are all in store to reduce the risk of re-infestation.

LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER Having both the girls at the shop has just made all the top to tail team want an old English sheepdog but more specifically a Roxie baby!

R

oxie and Luna are two beautiful old English sheepdogs that belong to the Smithers’ family. Roxie is Luna’s mummy and is very chilled out she is such a pleasure to have at Top to Tail as she is always ready to lay back and relax to be pampered! Luna takes after her mum and also enjoyes being groomed. She is slightly more lively than her mum but brings such a character to the shop you can’t help but give her cuddles! Roxie was welcomed into the family as not just their pet but a true family member. In 2008 the family apopted two orphaned kittens, Ant and Dec, at just 8 weeks old Roxie took to them straight away and became their new mum; this then got Roxie’s owners, Mark and Tina, thinking of breeding Roxie. Roxie passed her hip and eye score with flying colours which gave them the go ahead. Although Roxie’s scan showed she was going to have 4 puppies, Roxie unfortunately lost all but one puppy which was her daughter Luna, she arrived on Halloween in 2011 and so was Roxie’s little miracle puppy and just as gorgeous as her mum! Roxie tried again the following year and with her second litter she wowed with 6 puppies. She was such a proud mum and one of the puppies from this litter, Bree, qualified for Crufts 2013! Another one of the pups, Tess, is a regular at Top to Tail coming in for her pampering session, we have watched her grow up and follow in the paw prints of her mother into a calm and relaxed girlie! Roxie and Luna are both such great girls in both their own unique ways and all the top to tail girls can see how much Roxie loves her daughter and Luna her mum as they can just about stand to be separated in different baths! Having both the girls at the shop has just made all the top to tail team want an old English sheepdog but more specifically a Roxie baby!

CL Where was TED?

ow foll an itterc You on Tw h for us searc local t jus vered o @c

S

Thomas Byron III 1809-1863

o you found Ted.... but who WAS Thomas Byron III? Well Ted was on the grave of Thomas Byron III which is in the graveyard of St John’s church, along with a few other local names such as William Webb.

There were many Byrons over the years of Coulsdon dating back to 1611 but we’ll concentrate on Thomas Byron III or it will all get a bit complicated. The Byron family inhabited Coulsdon Court from 1850. Thomas Byron built what is the present Coulsdon Manor hotel and golf course of today. This was built on the old site of Hartley Farm in the 1850s, with his son Edmond laying the first foundation stone at the age of 6. During the process, this cut off an old road; most of which is no longer used but now called Hartley Old Road. The last section of Hartley Old Road is a short strip that looks towards the bottom half of the golf course today, this originally would have continued through the old estate, past Coulsdon Court and onwards towards the Coulsdon Road. Today all that remains of this old road is the entrance that leads you towards the Coulsdon Manor Hotel and golf course called Coulsdon Court Road. The old original road is still traceable in the form of a rough footpath through the grounds of the hotel and golf course. The footpath starts at the top end of Hartley Old Road and when followed uphill leads you to outside the hotel. The reason for this is that he just didn’t want the general public walking past his manor house! So he cut the Queens highway in half showing us the power he had as the landowner. Hartley Farm was relocated, which still stands today as a private residence in a private road simply called Hartley Farm surrounded by newer developments. Thomas married his first cousin Julia Jeffreys (1813-1899) and their son Edmond Byron (1843-1921) inherited the 2,000 acre estate at the tender age of 19 in 1862. He remained Lord of the manor for the next 58 years. During those years Edmond was a massive land owner of Coulsdon and at one point refused to give up land for even a memorial park. But in 1920 he sold 11 acres of Marlpit Lane for a fair price and today we have Marlpit Lane Memorial Park. The government wanted to build homes fit for heroes after WWI which is now Stoats Nest Village but had to obtain a compulsory purchase order before he would sell up! Edmond then, soon after, set up a line of Yew trees along the Coulsdon Road to hide the view of new houses and tenants who were not of his choice. When Edmond died in 1921 his coffin was carried by his tenant farmers from the house 600 yards towards St John’s Church while the tenor bell tolled 77 times, once for each of his years. Soon after his death, the estate was sold to the developer Charles Cearn. The Cearns commissioned Harry S Colt to design a golf course next to Coulsdon Court. Colt was a famous golf course architect and known for his designs of short holes. The golf course was leased to Croydon Council in the 1930s on the proviso that it was always kept as a public course. The Coulsdon Court Golf Course was formed in 1938. So that’s Ted’s historical adventure this month and what a journey he’s been on! CL Book Review Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams

When Douglas Adams’ novel was adapted for television, purists complained that the version shown bore little resemblance to the original. That may be true, but it is perfectly possible to enjoy both.

You can follow us on Twitterjust search for @coveredlocal

The ‘detective’ element in the title is not entirely misleading - there is a detective story here, albeit one that doesn’t follow any of the usual patterns of the genre. As might be expected, Adams interweaves humour, science fiction and a strong sense of the absurd, along with characters who are essentially believable and sympathetic, creating a novel which is much more than the sum of its parts. The plot is almost impossible to summarise. There is a horse stuck in the bathroom of a Cambridge college for a start. An Electric Monk is on the loose. And Samuel Taylor Coleridge is particularly important. Early in the story, electronics entrepreneur Gordon Way, finds himself unexpectedly murdered and refuses to accept that death is indeed the end. His employee Richard MacDuff, soon finds that the sofa stuck halfway up the staircase to his flat is the least of his problems - not least when his old university acquaintance Dirk Gently, telephones him unexpectedly as he is in the middle of breaking into his girlfriend’s flat... What follows is often complex, mostly impossible, but always funny. If nothing else, it will make you think about time in a completely different way.

Winnie’s Dinosaur Day - Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul

It is easy to see how Winnie the Witch has become such a favourite character for young readers everywhere. This is her thirteenth outing and, as always, things don’t go totally to plan. Accompanied by her faithful cat Wilbur, Winnie loves to visit the museum. Not only are there buttons to press and levers to pull, there are dinosaurs! Not real ones sadly - just bones and skeletons. Winnie would love to see a real dinosaur - Wilbur is not so keen. So when the museum runs a competition to draw or model a dinosaur, Winnie is determined to win...even if she needs some magic to help. Thomas and Paul work as a perfect team to bring Winnie and Wilbur to life. The words are well judged and often understated, whilst Paul’s illustrations help to draw the reader in, giving depth and detail to the whole story. Winnie may not always get it right, but it is bound to work out in the end - and children will love returning to the story again and again and again.
