Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered – the magazine for the Leeds suburbs. Be More Image Conscious! First-time contributors that is. We’re lucky to live and work in such strong communities and we have a growing number of contributors from groups, clubs and societies in the area. As readers’ yourselves you’ll realise that it’s usually the image that draws you into an article. So many times we’ve been unable to run a good story or report a community event because of the absence of a printable image. Or I’ve had to speak very nicely to one of photographers, often giving them little or no notice of the job in question. So, a few tips should help your event get the coverage it deserves. Images drawn from websites are often subject to copyright and are rarely good enough for print. To print glossy, the original image should be a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longer side and have a file size of 500kb or more. Merely increasing the file size of a poor image doesn’t improve it. If you are in any doubt then please send us the image ASAP, even before the piece is written. Unless the subject is distant and in darkness, or fast-moving, most big-name compact cameras under £200 should be good enough. Our own photographers are of course happy to oblige where possible, though their images are not freely available for release to other local publications. If they expect images then they are always free to attend events and take their own. The deadline for editorial submissions and listings in our Really Useful Guide is 08/07/14 and the advertising deadline is 11/07/14. Until next month,

The Tetley We visited landmark Leeds venue, The Tetley, a short while ago but were intrigued to learn more about the food on offer in the Bar & Kitchen and to see how the their new outdoor ‘green space’ had come into fruition. Just a short walk across the river from the city centre, it was well worth a repeat visit. In front of the majestic Art Deco building, which was once home to the Tetley’s Brewery empire, now lives a lush, green wildflower meadow. Surrounded by tasteful pathways and benches this is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful picnic, or to watch

your children running amongst the flowers and it is fantastic to see an organisation giving such consideration to its surroundings and the community. Also outside The Tetley building itself is a new terrace area... perfect for an after work pint with friends, or even a spot of al fresco dining, should the Yorkshire weather hold up. It’s a real sun trap in
the right conditions and the lovingly maintained fuschias and garden herbs certainly seem to be thriving. Inside, the bar area is spacious and it’s a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a good spot for intimate business meetings, with free wifi available, or for enjoying a leisurely drink with the papers. There appears to be no great urgency here; whilst the staff are attentive and always around, they seem content to be on hand when needed and not rushing people out so they can clear the tables. The service is cheery and prompt though and the hospitality team is lead by General Manager, Sam Gundelfinger, who has 15 years experience and came to The Tetley after previously working for Arc Inspirations. Through the bar area is a more slightly more formal dining room, with furniture and fittings largely recycled from the old brewery headquarters. intact throughout the building and adds a warmth to the more industrial iron columns and contemporary design. Private parties and functions can also be catered for, including within the preserved original boardroom of the Tetley elite. The food traditional

inspired. Good quality comfort food, locally sourced wherever possible. When The Tetley first opened its doors as a contemporary arts centre they consulted with renowned chef Anthony Flinn upon the menu. Many of the original dishes chosen by Anthony remain and are as popular as ever, but the current chef team of 7 are also
keen to lend new ideas, such as a fish mixed grill which was trialed over a weekend period, before making it onto the full menu. Firm favourites include fish and chips with mushy peas cooked in Tetley beer batter and individual toad in the hole with a pearl onion gravy which is cooked fresh from scratch and is worth every minute of the wait, I’m told. Burgers are thoughtfully presented on a wooden board, in a Tetley infused bun, and with dressings and garnish on the side so that you can leave out anything not to your taste. Sunday lunch is also highly popular and is served individually or on a sharing wooden platter, the idea being that you can share out your Sunday roast, as you would at home, but without the hassle of cooking it. Beef and pork are always provided for the roasts along with some of the biggest Yorkshire puddings ever seen and a hearty selection of vegetables to cater for all. a smaller appetite, there’s a nice selection of salads, chunky sandwiches and a brunch menu as well as a ‘Daily Bake’ cake of the day. The vegetarian choice is good too with homity pie, a mixed platter and shepherdess pie. Salt Baked Beetroot, Whipped Goat’s Curd and Watercress salad proves to be a popular summer dish. The children’s menu is inspired and there is not one chicken nugget on offer. Instead there are fish finger sandwiches, made from the same fresh fish as the adult dishes, bangers and mash and a children’s picnic which includes hummus and courgette fritters. Children’s desserts are also smaller replicas of adult dishes, ranging from fruit crumble to sticky toffee pudding or fruit with a strawberry sorbet. There are a wider range of
dishes and desserts available on the full menu including the creative Tetley’s strawberries and cream. Not just your average strawberries and cream, this is beautifully presented with a range of meringues, jellies and sorbet. Afternoon tea is also available. There’s a good selection of warm drinks and the coffee is fairtrade. The bar, not surprisingly, offers Tetley cask and gold beers and why not? After all, it was first produced in this very building around 200 years ago. Tetley Huntsman is also available in bottles, along with a range of draught and bottled lagers, ciders and spirits. There is a good selection of wine and Running Duck, an organic fairtrade wine, is one of the wines available to buy by the glass, as well as by the bottle. Plans are in place to launch
a classic cocktail list later this year and will offer several 1930’s themed cocktails to honour the Art Deco heritage of the building. The really nice thing about the Bar & Kitchen here is that all the profits go directly back into the artistic and educational programming. This means that The Tetley can continue to inspire artists and school groups alike and to offer free events such as Springboard Saturdays, a free family event held every Saturday. The Tetley is just the sort of community minded venue which Leeds will benefit massively from and it’s new purpose as an assessable arts centre has allowed this building to continue to be a fundamental part of social history and it’s well worth the short walk over the river to investigate. www.thetetley.org

fish and seafood It is tempting to pick up meat and fish along with the groceries, household essentials and drinks at a weekly supermarket shop – whether in the car or on-line. But a bit of research in your local area might suggest some alternative time well spent. As an example, let’s visit a fish and seafood supplier in Ilkley. There may well be comparable provision near you! The Ramus Seafood Emporium started life in Harrogate 40 years ago. In 2007, a second branch opened in Ilkley. Not a rapid rate of expansion, you might think, but as MD Jonathan Batchelor told Covered: “We need the right location, premises and customers.” The Ilkley premises in South Hawksworth Street are impressive, with an extensive range of fresh and smoked seafood as well as dressed and homecooked items. The home cooking is done in Harrogate and Ramus also supplies selected hotels and restaurants. Food miles are kept to a minimum – dressed Whitby crab is a feature – but the watchword is quality. Confrairie internationale de St Vincent St Vincent is the patron saint of wine makers and the Yorkshire/ Leeds confrairie (old French spelling for brotherhood) is one of three in UK. It was founded in 1981 as a direct consequence of Leeds and West Yorkshire’s school twinning arrangements with Lille, Leeds’ twin. Lille, in northern France, is well known for Flemish beers, hop spirit and its own local beer, Ch’ti (named after the local population and dialect), though not wine. But there was a vibrant confrairie in Lille to which many British teachers and lecturers had been invited. So it was only a matter of time before the Leeds community followed suit.

Leeds confrairie has four tasting evenings each year, with additional tasting dinners in January and July. The quarterly tastings are held in Castle Grove Masonic Lodge, Headingley, and the dinners at Devonshire Arms and Ruddings Park. The number of members has shrunk, through time, to a little over 30. The core of original members has diminished and, with French no longer being the universally taught foreign language at schools, the exchanges just aren’t generating enough new ones. COUNCILLORS COMMENTS: BARRY ANDERSON LEEDS CORE STRATEGY – HOUSING DELIVERY AND SUPPLY The Leeds Core Strategy which sets out housing numbers has recently been reviewed in light of the Planning Inspector’s examination of it in May 2014. The Inspector asked the Council to review this as a consequence to changes in the National Planning Practice Guidance (NPPG). One of the changes is to allow empty houses to contribute to the numbers provided they can be brought back into residential use. The Council has a robust strategy on this and around 400 are brought back each year. In addition the Council is now allowed to take into account its plans for housing for older people, including residential institutions. There have been 314

More focus is given to the performance of the market and the housing industry to deliver the growth required. There is a pessimistic view of this within the industry
about being able to deliver the numbers required. The Council has therefore engaged with the housing providers and the Home Builders Federation and discussions have identified that they are only building the numbers of houses they can sell and state that this is around 20 to 30 dwellings per annum. At present there are just over 80 outlets for new housing in Leeds. In order to meet the requirements of the Core Strategy there would need to be between 146 and 218 outlets. Only sites that generate 20% or greater profit are considered viable prospects by volume house builders. To that end they are not planning, and cannot plan to deliver the Core Strategy. Cllr. CHARITY CHALLENGE
Last month I completed my latest fundraising charity challenge; I climbed Cotopaxi, a 19,347ft active volcano in Ecuador, to raise money and awareness of the Royal British Legion’s Battle Back Centre in Shropshire. Our challenge to climb Cotopaxi was almost derailed due to bad weather and the mountain being closed the days prior to our climb. However, our successful Cotopaxi summit attempt was carried out despite fresh snow and treacherous conditions; I knew I only had one chance to climb Cotopaxi and I didn’t want to let down the Battle Back Centre! This was the toughest physical challenge I have ever done; the incessant steep slopes were endless and the snow made it so much harder. 5 members of the team gave up part way up the mountain but I persevered with 6 others, including two former soldiers who have been through
COUNCIL COMMENTS: HORSFORTH TOWN COUNCIL Horsforth Town Councillors have elected me as their chairman for 2014/2015; a one year term. I am greatly honoured by this, and look forward to serving Council and the people of Horsforth. The previous chairman of three years was Cllr. Jude Arbuckle, who devoted himself to this important role. Council and Horsforth are in his debt for his work for the community. The business of Council has already started this year at a Full Council meeting on 28th May at which the formal policies and procedures of Council were set for the forthcoming year. the Battle Back Centre, to finish the 15hour climb to the summit. Pushing me through the gruelling Cotopaxi climb was the thought of raising much needed funds for the Battle Back Centre. I was fortunate to visit the Centre before the trip and see the
amazing work they do there for myself. Serving soldiers and veterans who have been through the Battle Back Centre joined us on the Cotopaxi climb, as well as a team from Carnegie Great Outdoors, based at Leeds Metropolitan University, who provide the world class coaching at the Centre. The Battle Back Centre is an adaptive sport and adventurous training facility for wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel. Participants undertake sports such as climbing, caving, wheelchair basketball, clay shooting and archery to help overcome physical and psychological challenges, promote self-confidence and improve motivation to aid recovery. After hearing firsthand how important the Battle Back Centre is, I am proud to have raised money to support their work. ADEL NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM

A recent public meeting took place in Adel, arranged and Chaired by Cllr Anderson in response to residents’ objections to two planning applications on the land off Otley Road and off Church Lane opposite The Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Adel.
The issue of traffic onto Otley Road and Church Lane was a major concern for residents. The Highways Consultant responded that Hallam Land own the northern parcel of land and the access would be on to Otley Road opposite Kingsley Drive. The southern parcel of land would access on to Church Lane. These traffic flows would be in additional to those from the two developments already planned for Adel Lane plus the one at Bramhope.

Exploring Leeds A WALK AROUND OTLEY PART 2 The second walk around Otley concentrates on the western part of the town. Starting at the Jubilee Clock walk diagonally left across the market place until you come to Boroughgate. Take the small narrow passageway which will take you into the Bay Horse Yard At the end of the passageway turn right onto Courthouse Street. On the right is the veterinary surgery, which is on the site of the former Laithe House. On the left, after a further 50 yards, you will see the former Courthouse, now a major arts centre in the town. At the end of the street turn left and go downhill passing the Licks Car Park on the left. This is on

the site of the Licks Cattle Market where in the 19th century animals were traded. Downhill on the right is a turning onto Riverdale Road. Continue along here and on the left you will see Garnett’s Field. Paper making was one of the key industries in Otley and Garnetts mill was located on the side of the river near to the weir. Paper making dates back to 1722, but The front of the Methodist Church
there is evidence of a mill here back as far as 1195. The Garnett family owned the mill until 1935 when Associated Paper bought it from the family. It closed in 2006 and the land is currently being developed into a 200 home estate. At the end of Riverdale Road, turn right up Hamilton Terrace which leads you up to the Civic Centre, formerly the Mechanics Institute. This was built on the site of former thatched cottages and was completed in 1871. Opposite you at this point you will see the Maypole on the corner of Boroughgate and Manchester Square. Turn right here along Boroughgate and continue for 50 yards until you reach the Methodist Church on your left. The Methodist Church in the town was formed in 1750, originally at Silver Mill Cottages just off Leeds Road. John Wesley visited the town on a number of occasions, usually stopping with the Ritchie family on Boroughgate. The Wesley Hall, next to the church, was erected in the early 20th century to house the Sunday School, which was previously in the former chapel

across the road now occupied by Chevin Court sheltered housing. At the traffic lights, turn left into Crossgate and continue up as far as the HSBC Bank. Cross here and then over the pedestrian crossing to bring you to the side of the Memorial Gardens, commemorating the men and women from Otley who gave their lives in the two World Wars. Continue until you reach Bondgate. Turn right until you come to Wetherspoons then right again into Newmarket crossing the narrow street Mercury Row, originally called Rattan Row. Newmarket is again a street dating back to the 16th & 17th centuries, which leads you back to the Market Place, passing the yard of the Black Bull one of the oldest buildings in the town. From here walk back to the Jubilee Clock where our tour ends. The Market Place

Beryl Burton One name which was not being mentioned a great deal in the Yorkshire media, for a while, is Beryl Burton – arguably Britain’s greatest cyclist ever. Perhaps the world’s. But things are changing, due to Yorkshire’s present feverish interest in all things cycling and a play at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Born Beryl Charnock in Halton in 1937, she was hospitalised with rheumatic fever as a child. Her husband introduced her to cycling. They married in 1955. Within two years

she had won a silver medal at a national event and within five she had won three world titles. Domestically she was unbeatable for over twenty years. Her most remarkable achievement was in 1967 when she set a new record of 277.25 miles in 12 hours. The remarkable element isn’t in the record itself (though it still stands). No, it’s the fact that it took a British man until 1969 to beat it. Perhaps it is a sign of the times that, whereas two of our male cyclists have been knighted relatively recently and quickly, Burton was awarded only
an MBE, later elevated to OBE. There are tributes to her in Morley and there is a short cycling track between Harrogate and Knaresborough that bears her name. On 27 November 2012 a radio play about Burton written by actress Maxine Peake was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This year’s Tour de France wasn’t the inspiration for the play, but is responsible for Beryl running at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 30 June to 19 July. There have also been recent supportive events in Morley, Ilkley and Knaresborough.

Covered Website Covered’s website has just undergone a long overdue overhaul. With the magazine’s continued expansion and improvement, the old website had become relic of times gone by. After discussing plans for a revamped site with a number of digital gurus, editor Chris Barnham settled on the extensive talents of Modern Circus. Modern Circus is the professional identity of local digital media producer Jim McGuire. Now digital media can mean a lot of things, so let’s be specific; Jim specialises in video production, website management and online marketing. He achieves this all as a sole trader by working closely with a passionate, localised network of close-knit ‘creative types’; in his own words “the kind of people to which I’d gladly entrust the protection (but not consumption!) of my girlfriend’s homemade carrot cake”. In the space of 4 years, Jim has lent his talents to a multitude of local, national and international organisations, working with notable names such as bestselling author Philip Pullman CBE, evolutionary biologist Prof. Richard Dawkins and BBC radio presenter & comedian Robin Ince. Poachers Bold – the latest album from Duncan McFarlane Duncan McFarlane has a loyal following in the Wharfe Valley and at folk festivals up and down the country. Fans have waited a couple of years for this latest album thanks to some health problems, now mercifully behind him. Duncan and his acoustic trio (Anne Brivonese on fiddle and Steve Fairholme on melodeon) were in fine voice at Otley RUFC in early May, playing a number of these tracks. The lineup on the album is electric, with Geoff Taylor on electric guitar, Martin Ward on bass guitar and
Nick Pepper on drums, but the added resonance merely enhances the appeal of a deeply thoughtful compilation. Some tunes are traditional, though often with the Duncan touch, like Rufford Park. This sinister tale of poachers gives the album its title and makes starkly
clear the gulf between haves and have-nots. Poachers Bold is not a protest album, though it does expose issues such as bullying and question the morality and the aftereffects of sending ever more troops into battle. There are more personal themes too; one song inspired by his memories of his grandparents and one by the funeral of Jane Tomlinson, who touched the lives of so many. A lovely instrumental piece recalls a special time with his daughter. All rounded off with a rollicking drinking song celebrating good cheer and friendship. The Shock of the Fall – book review The Shock of the Fall was the Costa book of the year 2013 and you can see why. It is a totally authentic first-person account of how it feels to be someone with a personality disorder, struggling to come to terms with a traumatic event and the inevitable guilt surrounding it. Written by Nathan Filer, a psychiatric nurse, it could so easily have been a pale shadow of Mark Haddon’s Curious Incident of the Dog in the Afternoon. She is a lovely girl, but unfortunately has struggled to find loving adopters. She was a very poorly kitten when she came into the organisation’s care but she has come a long way and now deserves a forever home where she can thrive with a family that understand her needs.

Fell Running Fell running differs significantly from cross country running. The gradients are steeper and the climbs more frequent. Whereas crosscountry and road races are defined by distance, a fell race is also classified by the amount of ascent, eg 10 miles/2000 ft. A quick scroll through the events listings of the Fell Runners’ Association (FRA) shows that the majority are won in under an hour. All runners are fit, dedicated and healthy. The fact that some take twice the winning time shows the difference the climbs make between runners of otherwise similar ability. The earliest fell race was reputedly an eleventh century test for potential messengers by the King of Scotland. More realistically, today’s competitions originated at agricultural and rural shows in Victorian Britain alongside other tests of throwing and pure strength. We contacted one of the clubs, Otley AC, to get a general idea of how they operate. Otley AC was founded thirty years ago by a handful of runners. It now has 140 members with a thriving junior section. Members compete at all levels from 5k road races on Saturday mornings up to representing Great Britain in 24hour events and include disciplines such as fell running, cross country and road racing. Some join just for a run though are often drawn into competitions. The club meets for training every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:15pm at Otley Cricket Club, with a beginners group each Tuesday at 6:30pm. In July ‘Le Tour de France’, cycling’s most famous competition, will be making its way to Yorkshire for the Grand Départ. For the first time since it was established in 1903 the Tour is heading to the North of England and it gives sport lovers in Yorkshire the chance to see this historic and prestigious event first hand in their home county. The vibrant city centre of Leeds will see the cyclists speeding through the Headrow before making their way around one of the most scenic routes in the UK. If you want to be present to give Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish some home crowd encouragement as they start their quest to try and get their hands on the fabled yellow jersey, then make sure you get to the Headrow in Leeds on the 5th July because as of 11.10am the 2014 Tour de France will be underway; from here the cyclists will then travel 190km to Harrogate during stage one of the Tour. Yorkshire does have a big link to the Tour de France besides hosting it this year – before
Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome won the last two Tours and put British cycling truly on the map, it was Yorkshire born Brian Robinson who was the first Brit to win a stage of the Tour de France way back in 1958 paving the way for the success of today. The beauty of the Tour being held in the beautiful Yorkshire hills is that they are here all year round and can be ridden by anyone, including you! Obviously fitness is key if you want to cycle the whole 190km so here are a few tips to get you started (buying a bike is a given…) : • Get involved with spin classes, they are a great way to build stamina and fitness levels whilst being motivated by an instructor. • Be prepared to gradually build up your cycling skills and fitness levels, it will come with time and cannot be rushed. • Make sure that your technique is correct when in the saddle – poor technique will affect your overall ride. • If your plan is to participate in a road race, make sure that you are
tackling plenty of road routes for practice – don’t expect to be able to go into an event just having taken a few spin classes – hill climbs cannot truly prepare you for the real thing. • Make sure you stay hydrated whenever you cycle (even on a stationary bike or in spin class) and if you’re on a road bike outdoors then make sure that you’ve got a helmet on. (Letour.yorkshire.com has plenty of cycling events that you can get involved with if you are struggling.) If you don’t fancy tackling the Tour route itself, Trinity Fitness is offering the chance to participate in a stationary Tour de France as part of their summer fitness challenges. The challenge starts as the Tour begins on the 5th July and must be completed by the 27th July as the Tour ends. Anyone for Tennis? During the annual tournament at Wimbledon many of us are inspired to pick up a racquet and take to the tennis court ourselves. Tennis is a great sport to get you moving and whole family can join in, whatever their skill level. The courts in most parks are free to use, all you need is your racquet and ball. Tennis is also a sport with a low risk of injury, research shows less risk than football, running and even golf. Here are the most common injuries that do occur, and some simple steps to avoid injury stopping play:
Sprained ankle
- Wear appropriate shoes, fastened properly. Avoid playing on very uneven or slippery surfaces.
Calf strain
- Warm up with a gentle knock about before chasing after shots, it’s the strong push off when the calf is most vulnerable. Stop
before you get tired, most muscle injuries occur when legs are fatigued.
Shoulder injury
Increase the time you spend playing gradually, it’s the repetitive action of tennis strokes than can lead to shoulder injuries. The serve action places the most stress on the joint
Tennis elbow
- This is inflammation of the muscles and tendons of the forearm, usually caused by prolonged gripping activities (often not tennis!). Make sure you use a racquet with the correct size handle, try not to grip too hard and take regular breaks. Seeing a tennis coach to improve your technique can help avoid many injury problems but if you do get injured a sports physio, such as those working at Physiofit can provide treatment and tennis specific rehabilitation. By now many garden birds will have fledged their first brood of chicks, and may be starting on a second. You could see fledglings at your feeders for the first time. They are often as big as the adults, but can look very different, a bit like “unfinished versions” of their parents. Young robins are speckled brown where the adult is red, and young goldfinches lack the striking red and black patterns on the head. The parents will be introducing them to your garden as a food source, and will feed them less and less. winds. This also applies to dahlias, delphiniums and other tall flowering plants, where staking early ensures the flower heads are enjoyed without damage. If you have the time and energy, soft wood cuttings of shrubs taken now will root in a reasonably short time. This is a month to enjoy yourself, as flowers are blooming everywhere and your carefully grown crops are starting to reach maturity. Start harvesting your vegetables, fruits and salads, as they reach their peak of perfection. Eating, pickling, jamming or freezing as your fancy takes you. This is also the last month to sow final quantities of brassicas, peas, beans and beetroot, ready for autumn and winter. If this month becomes dry, it is important to water all your growing crops to ensure they grow healthily – and do not bolt (run to seed) prematurely. Feed your tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers on a regular basis, picking out the side shoots on tomatoes to maximise the crop. Dead head roses and other perennials, to encourage repeat flowering. As the first flush of flowers go over, feed the plants with a general balanced fertilizer – then spray with a preventative fungicide to keep on top of rust, mildew and any other garden problems. If there is an infestation of green fly, black fly etc, spray with your own favourite remedy to control the situation. Still, the tractor drivers were probably on constant duty during arrivals and departures. INSPIRATION FROM SAFE HAVEN A player is no longer required by a top league team so he is put onto the transfer list and sent packing to another team who eagerly await his involvement in new plans for their team. With success in mind the teams forge ahead with their team plan and no one is aware of what really took place behind the scenes. Some may say it was a bribe or another transaction that took place but was it entirely as seen by the average fan? No, in many ways all they are interested in is; will their team win? When a body is no longer needed it disappears into the abyss, it is only reconciled when it reaches the point of true arrival at its new destination. That destination has its roots in someone else’s decision to do good or leave it well alone. A do-gooder comes along very rarely, as in the well-known story of the Good Samaritan, but his actions were lifesaving. When a person is in need they are desperate, they want to know you care enough to step off the ladder of success and jump into their world for a time, time enough to realise their position AND understand it very well. Intervention is the answer, it comes when we

Bramhope in Bloom Spring had just turned into summer when we found Sue Julian and Marie Hotham of Bramhope in Bloom refreshing these tubs near the Fox and Hounds. The dominant colour of yellow is, of course, a tribute to the Tour de France. The first stage passes nearby in Pool in Wharfedale and then again in Otley. Another tribute lined up
this year is a commemoration of the centenary start of The Great War, a display likely to vary over the next four years. The focus for that is a refurbishment and new planting in the memorial garden (opposite the Methodist church). Bramhope in Bloom was reformed five years ago after several years’ lull and has a dedicated team of a dozen volunteers. Bridge Inn Beer and Pie Festival As reported in last month’s edition, Horsforth’s Bridge Inn on Low Lane is a community hub offering a wide range of social events. The Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend saw it return to more traditional pub activities – a beer festival, with pies an added theme. The weekend an additional twelve real ales on offer, making a total of twenty on offer. Of the guest beers, Old Tom, Myricale & Timmy Taylors Golden Best were the most popular.

The Bridge Inn is due to close for refurbishment on 4 August and anticipates bank holiday reopening on the 26th August. If you have a heart to listen you will understand why . Someone, somewhere is interested in making money and it is not your concern who, but to then direct your thoughts to the promise of wealth you will then rely on, until the thing is defaced and cast into the bin where it belongs, only to cause yet more destruction to the environment it was supposed to have helped in the first place. It’s a really sad way to start this appeal isn’t it but true for so many of us ...false hopes after genuine trust in an authority that’s supposed to take care of us.

So Safe Haven has reached its fourth birthday , yet it is so much older than you think. It’s existence is beyond reality and has its source in Wisdom and understanding. If you thought you were going to hear from us that we have reached a level where we are content then think again! We have only just touched the surface of the problem. Our eyes have been opened to the reality of the state of lives that have been blown apart by bureaucracy and harshness. Lives so torn apart they have no earthly way of being put back together again by earthly measures alone. Do you know someone in need, I do, and that person cannot be ‘fixed’ she is torn in every way and she stands alone now waiting for my solution, but I don’t have one. I can
only stand by and watch, yes I can make promises and give gifts but the real pain is still in attendance throughout and will remain so until something significant changes. Safe Haven is on a brink, does it settle and remain as it is or does it do the spectacular and resist the temptation to stay where it is. No it has to change, it has to grow up into something so big it stands with you all and says...’here my friends is the difference... the living proof there is a God after all’ What Safe Haven is about to achieve is phenomenal, it is turning its authority entirely over to God Himself and relying totally upon His authority and wherewithal to do an even greater job in helping society regain all it

HEATHER PEACE: The Thin Line Regular Covered contributor Dawn Kilner is more used to visiting the city’s best restaurants and venues, this month she caught up with Heather Peace in HMV to find out about her new album, The Thin Line. Bradford born actress and singer songwriter, Heather Peace, made a welcome return home to Yorkshire when she performed a short acoustic set in HMV Leeds before greeting fans and signing copies of her new album 'The Thin Line.' She may have headlined with such acts as KT Tunstall, Alison Moyet and Brian May but, after starring in many mainstream TV programmes, Heather is perhaps better known as an actress. She has always had a passion for music though and often performed alongside her acting roles. Having learnt to play the piano at age 6, she went on to sing at her local church before leaving Yorkshire to study drama at Manchester Metropolitan University. After landing a role in Emmerdale in 1996, as Anne Cullen, her television career began and she appeared in show's such as London's Burning, Ultimate Force, The Chase, Lip Service and, most recently, ITV's Prey. This year though, Heather decided to leave her role in Waterloo Road to focus more on her music. She released her debut album 'Fairytales' back in 2012 under her own covered_ed_40_AREA_A.indd 60
record label, Kaleidoscope, after been signed to Simon Cowell's label in the past. This move for independence was, undoubtedly, assisted by Heather's strong and loyal fan base, who have travelled from as far as Australia and the USA to see her play numerous sell out tours. 'The Thin Line' was 3 months in the making and was produced by James Lewis, who has also produced the Arctic Monkeys. Heather describes being much
more involved in the production process for this album and they recorded onto tape to create a warm, soulful sound reminiscent of Motown and not dissimilar to a modern-day Dusty Springfield. Heather says that she had a clearer idea of the vibe she wanted for this record and was keen to inject more energy. "This is definitely more of a pop album" she says, and describes the first single from the album, 'We Can Change', as "an empowering tribute to equality." Heather's rich and strong vocals shine through this blend of tender ballads and up-tempo pop songs and covering the delicate subjects of love and break ups, with often emotional lyrics, can only help Heather's music reach out to yet more people and increase that fan base even more. Heather returns to Leeds City Varieties, with full band, on 27 October as part of a UK tour and will be playing at festivals throughout the summer. 2014 KIRKSTALL FESTIVAL The 2014 Kirkstall Festival will be on Saturday 12th July, 11:00 – 17:00, and the theme for 2014 is ‘Le Grand Festival De Kirkstall’, taking inspiration from the Tour De France. There will be some cycling themed events but also some French themed ones; including a newly constructed Pètanque court! Kirkstall Festival is a community fun day that takes place every year on the second Saturday in July in the beautiful grounds of Kirkstall Abbey, providing a full day of free entertainment that appeals to the whole family and community. The event is organised entirely by local volunteers with the kind

Rhinos’ New Partnership with NHS There are three clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in Leeds, each covering a different area. Each also takes a citywide lead in different aspects of care. Leeds North CCG leads on emergency health care and on 6 June launched a new partnership with Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Rugby Foundation. The launch was at LGI’s Accident and Emergency Unit with ambulance drivers, A&E staff, GPs, the NHS CCG, LRF and Leeds Rhinos all represented.
As the Festival is largely selffunded attendees are asked for their support by buying a programme for £2 on the day. This will give details about everything that’s on across the day, and it’s a small amount for a fabulous family day out. Wherever possible attendees are encouraged to take public transport though there is limited free parking available, as well as disabled parking close to the site.

NEWS FROM LPS During the past months the Leeds Photographic Society has had success with two wonderful exhibitions. Their annual exhibition at Salts Mill attracted over 800 visitors and the 'Beauty in the Natural World' exhibition at the Atrium Gallery in the Bexley Wing of Saint James' hospital was heralded a great success and will continue to run until the end of July. This exhibition is open to the public and features 16 stunning framed prints, all of which are for sale with all proceeds going to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre charity. Meanwhile the society's summer events have continued with tutorial evenings and an opportunity for members to practice their street photography with an outing to the Appleby Horse Fair. Vintage, Vintage, Vintage Covered makes no apologies for featuring vintage fashion yet again – though this time the subject is broadened by the inclusion of music, dance, and vintage and classic home wares and vehicles. Once upon a time there were retro stands at antiques fairs, societies re-enacting whichever battles or periods, themed dance evenings such as swing, vintage fashion fairs and classic car shows. Those stand-alone events have now joined forces with devastating effect. There being none in Leeds, at least as far as we are aware, enthusiasts and the simply curious are going to have to venture further afield – Haworth Forties Weekend and Whitby Goth Festival are two of the best known. In June, Covered was invited to the second annual event at Scampston Hall, near Malton. The two-day event, Scampston Does Vintage, was an imaginative product of the two organisers’ passion for all things vintage. Rather than confine the event to any element or period, it is a wish list of everything they wanted to see, hear and taste at retro and vintage events. And at a venue that lent itself to the theme, rather than in some sports hall taken over for the afternoon - between the play group and the badminton club.
Take a look for yourself. Scores of multi-award winning classic vehicles as clean under the bonnet as they were outside. Dozens of vintage fashion and home ware dealers, including a specialist in menswear (very uncommon).
Jazz and swing bands performing throughout the event, including the Saturday night - and at two on-site venues. Visitors living the dream at a venue that complements and doesn’t conflict. By the way, the three visitors seated are on the display of a vintage prop hire company. The event had all angles covered. Such a charming and civilised event, and so were all the exhibitors and visitors with whom we spoke. June to September is the season for these events. Admission was £8.50 on the Sunday. Scampston has set the standard for others to follow.

in this issue’s letter I’ve emphasised the need for reports sent in to be supported by good images. While I’m not necessarily plugging ours here as being the best possible, they do illustrate the point I’m trying to make. We couldn’t have given the event or subject as much as a mention without at least one good image. Don’t deny your club, cause or event the publicity and recognition it deserves by relying on microscopic web images or one taken on a dusty mobile phone.
