How can you prevent a chimney fire?

Keep your chimney clean. If enough creosote (a dark brown or black flammable tar deposited on the walls of a chimney) builds up in your chimney and the internal flue temperature is high enough, you could have a chimney fire. That’s why it is important to have your chimney regularly inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep.

If you think your chimney may be on fire, err on the side of caution and call 911. The Fairfield Fire Department would rather respond to a false alarm than for your life and home to be threatened by a chimney fire.
