E
very year it seems like the biggest holiday shopping days of the season move closer and closer to Halloween. There’s something about October that marks the transition from fall to winter and brings out the sales, coupons and long lines everywhere. Even in places that don’t see cold weather—like Las Vegas. Two ladies in the desert state started their Black Friday campout this year at Best Buy on Nov. 6. Twenty-two days in line, all for a TV. Though, is it considered a line if they’re the only ones? It’s stories like these that make me glad John and I moved to Clinton, because it’s the small communities that will keep the national stress level down come Friday, Nov. 28, with their seasonal traditions. Here in the Village, the Shoppers’ Stroll (see page 8) marks the official start of the holiday shopping season, and it’s refreshing to see that the shops are opening at 10 a.m. Friday, not 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. But it’s not even that these stores are opening at a reasonable hour, but that they’re letting each holiday pass as it comes. As I was out a couple weeks ago talking to many of the Village’s shop owners, I heard more than once that their holiday items were not even out yet—they wait until Thanksgiving to do that. What would it be like if big box stores were to do the same? This holiday season I’d like to challenge you to avoid the lines and
shop local. While that’s not to say the shops in Clinton are not busy— because they are—it is more to say you won’t have to learn WWF-style moves and fight your way into a store in order to get all the items on your shopping list. Aside from the Shoppers’ Stroll on Friday, Nov. 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is a special day, too. It’s what is known as Small Business Saturday, a day to encourage shoppers to visit local stores and put money back into the community where they live. We are fortunate to have a diverse set of shops in the Village, where we can purchase handmade items, local foods, clothing, shoes, housewares and more. Stop in to the shops on West Park Row, College Street and around town this weekend, and you’ll find unique items for everyone on your list (check out pages 6-7 for some staff picks). You’ll find great gifts (or items for yourself), while the local economy and business owners benefit from your purchase. Though The Courier will be closed on Black Friday (we have to go shopping, too), we wanted to mark the holiday season with something special for our readers—and with that I’m happy to say you’re holding our first full-color magazine. I invite you to take a look through the pages to see what area businesses are offering this holiday season and then go out and support them, as they are an important piece of the fabric of Clinton.

This year the Shoppers’ Stroll, happening from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., will feature carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides and, of course, the lighting of the tree on the Green. The 50th Annual Holiday Parade begins at 7 p.m. on College Street and ends at the Fire Department. Santa will be there waiting to listen to children’s Christmas wishes following the parade.
