Bedeque New Community With Strong Link To The Past The community of Bedeque and Area is one of the province’s newest municipalities, although it has a long history. The community of Bedeque and Area was created in November of 2014 with the merger of the neighbouring communities of Bedeque and Central Bedeque. The area has the distinction of being settled by United Empire Loyalists

following the American Revolution. Its name derives from a native word meaning “the place that lies on the backward turn.” Agriculture remains the backbone of Bedeque and Area, with lush fields of potatoes and grain a common site during the summer months. The Dunk River is a popular spot for anglers and the nearby Provincial Park in Chelton of-

fers great swimming in some of the warmest waters on the east coast -- with a bird’s eye view of Confederation Bridge as an added bonus. The new Community of Bedeque and Area is one of the smallest municipalities in the province with a population of only 310 residents stretching over 2.2 kilometre. Andy Walker

The Good Old Summertime “For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” Psalm 33:4,5b (NKJV)

Lauretta Balderston free-lance writer The summertime is the season when our beautiful island reflects the “goodness of the Lord” in the green fields, lush bushes, and radiant flowers of every color of the rainbow. The rich, red soil gently pushes the crops to the surface reminding us that the Lord is faithful and He has chosen to bless our island yet again. We enjoy all the new produce fresh from the farms to the markets making mealtime seem better than even last year. We depend on God’s faithfulness to allow everything to come forth in due season. “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NKJV) The fields dotted with large marshmallow bales of hay remind me of when my father would take the children to my aunt’s farm on the weekend for haymaking. He worked the old fashioned way with pitchfork and sweat. We really weren’t any help because once

there was enough hay piled together, we delighted in jumping in it making it spread all over the field again. Little did we realize we were making more work for him but he would only shoo us away and, pitchfork in hand, resume his task. Our reward after all daddy’s hard work was a bowl of fresh berries from the garden topped with the warm cream skimmed off the top of the milk pails. Nothing can replace those fond memories of the family gathered around enjoying the summer days and good company, food and fun. Driving the back roads of our island allows me time to reflect on this new season of life and recall family get togethers from a much more appreciative perspective. Our journey of faith is strengthened when we know that God is indeed in control and blesses us in many ways- even by simple reminders of a former season from yes-

terday. Our journey of life is more content when we accept the wonders of the goodness of God in the world around us today- and make memories that will warm our thoughts and hearts in the days ahead. “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” Psalm 33:5b
