Next Generation Patented Drilling Blades Triton launched its unique deep soil engagement direct drill in 2018 to give plough based yields from direct drilling. 6 years later we are consistently achieving higher yields from the Triton than from ploughed trials on our own land. The Triton is the only all weather seed drill on the market that gives the flexibility to grow maximum profit autumn sown crops whilst reducing blackgrass from late drilling... several manufacturers are now also claiming all weather capability... if these are false claims then the farmer’s new approach will be thwarted.

John Deere enrols 86 new engineering apprentices • Next generation of skilled youngsters • Investment in future for major brand • Practical learning alongside mentors

A

n induction ceremony held at John Deere’s UK headquarters has marked the start of the journey for 86 young apprentices training to be qualified technicians. Since its inception, John Deere’s apprenticeship programme has ignited the careers of more than 1,200 youngsters, setting them on a course to grow their experience and expertise across the dealership network.

Earn while you learn The 2023 intake will complete their apprenticeships – provided by ProVQ – in either Ag Tech, Parts Tech, Turf Tech. The latest cohort also includes those working for the Wirtgen Group, the John Deere-owned

business specialising in road construction machinery; and learners from John Deere’s specialist forestry division. Apprentices are paid employees of John Deere dealers, spending most of their time in the workshop with a mentor. For a number of weeks in a year, they travel to John Deere’s Apprentice Training Centre facility in Upper Saxondale, near the company’s Langar headquarters in Nottinghamshire. John Deere Branch Training Manager Allan Cochran said: “In the three decades our esteemed apprenticeship has run we have produced many cohorts of talented individuals who have gone on to have careers across the John Deere dealership network.

“Our aim with the apprenticeship programme is to help young people make their first step on the career ladder, and to nurture and mould those with the skills and desire to work in our industry.” John Deere’s apprenticeship programme involves students being trained in engineering, electronics, hydraulics, diagnostics, communication skills, computing, sales, and marketing.

Career ladder Ag Tech and Turf Tech apprentices study towards the land-based service engineering technician qualification (Level 3), while in Parts Tech individuals complete a retailer apprenticeship standard (Level 2). Arthur Haynes is one of the apprentices joining the programme this autumn.

The 16-year-old works at Masons Kings’ Exbridge outlet in Devon and switched to working in agriculture after moving to the county from the Midlands. “When we moved to a house which also had horse stabling, there was a lot of equipment around such as tractors which has always interested me,” said Mr Haynes. “Years ago my dad built a sports car and got me into engines and mechanics, so I guess that’s really driven me to look into this industry for work.” Mr Haynes found out about the apprenticeship programme after seeing a Facebook post from Masons Kings and has been working with the John Deere dealer for four months. “I’m working on foragers, attending call outs to service and maintain maize headers as well as carrying out pre-delivery inspections on machines. It’s absolutely brilliant – really interesting to learn about this kit which is changing all the time. I can’t wait for the rest of the apprenticeship programme. It looks great.”

Huge sale of tractor memorabilia goes under the hammer

M

ore than 800 pieces of Ferguson memorabilia went under the hammer at the Cheffins Machinery saleground last month at Sutton, near Ely. Put together by the late Jim Russell, an enthusiast from Warwickshire, the sale represented the dispersal of the most comprehensive Massey Ferguson collections worldwide, formed over a 50-year period. It included models, toys, paraphernalia and a 1936 Ferguson Brown Type-A tractor. Mr Russell’s passion for Fergusons began after he was introduced to Irish inventor and entrepreneur Harry Ferguson – the man responsible for the development of the modern tractor. Mr Herguson asked Mr Russell to drive an early Massey Ferguson trac-

tor – an experience which kick-started his collection of Massey Ferguson memorabilia. Today, the collection encompasses toys, catalogues, instruction manuals, models and even a 1936 Ferguson Brown Type-A which was previously owned by well-known Massey Ferguson historian Ben Serjeant. One of the most important lots was the final signature written by Harry Ferguson, dated 6 April 1954, prior to his resignation as honorary chairman at Massey-Harris-Ferguson Engineering Ltd later that summer. In addition, there was a Ferguson Sherman Plough catalogue, which was used by Mr Ferguson to set out headings for a proposed tractor catalogue, and which has been annotated by him throughout.

‘Black’ tractor Among the models, a scratch-built Ferguson mounted combine, built to a two-inch scale and which took over 3,000 hours to complete, was available as well as a 1933 Ferguson ‘Black’ tractor model, built by Mr Russell himself. Mr Russell started collecting Marklin and Basset Lowke O-gauge railway locomotives in the 1970s, and by the 1990s his focus had switched to agricultural machinery, when he began buying models of the County tractors he was running on his farm. Tom Godsmark, Associate, Cheffins said: “This is certainly the largest private collection of Ferguson models, tinplate toys and memorabilia to ever have come to auction and is most likely to be the largest in existence in the world. “The sheer scale of it is quite breathtaking, as is the condition of these pieces which have been displayed for over half a century. “Jim has to have been one of the most devoted enthusiasts we have come across to date, even making major modifications to his house to fit his collection.”

LAMMA 2024

Machinery giants gear up for bumper LAMMA show • Latest models and upgraded brands • Huge range of agricultural products • Larger tractors, power and efficiency

A

full range of Massey Ferguson machinery will be exhibited at next month’s LAMMA event – as the company returns to the show after more than five years away. It will be the first time Massey Ferguson has exhibited at LAMMA since the show moved to the NEC Birmingham. It will do so with its UK dealer network to highlight the latest models and updated machines released this year. Held on 17-18 January, the twoday show will also see the return of a number of other major brands – including JCB and Case IH. It is seen as a big coup for LAMMA organisers coming just two months after the Agritechnica event in Germany. MF brand manager William Judge said: “There has been a high number of requests from both customers and dealers for Massey Ferguson to go back to LAMMA, and I am delighted to confirm that we will be returning.”

Dealer network Supporting its wider dealer network was a big factor in the decision to return, said Mr Judge. The Massey Ferguson team was looking forward to meeting customers and discussing their requirements, he added. “We’ll have our full range of machinery under the lights from tractors, combines and telehandlers, alongside hay and forage machinery. LAMMA will act as our dealer network premiere with our stand design which will mirror what customers expect.

The new Massey Ferguson 9S tractor was introduced this autumn

Our full machinery range under lights

JCB says it too will exhibit its bestever range of agricultural machines. The display is likely to include the new JCB Fastrac iCON tractor, boasting an all-new operating system, integrated precision technology and machine control. JCB Agriculture managing director John Smith said: “We are the largest machinery manufacturer in Britain, with a full range of agricultural products to support the farming, commercial horticulture and other rural industries.”

Biggest Quadtrac Case IH recently launched its most powerful tractor . The 778hp (572kW) Quadtrac 715 incorporates advances to operate implements at their ideal speed, producing higher workrates, even in tough conditions. “The principle behind the develop-

ment of the Quadtrac 715 is not simply more power,” said Case IH product marketing manager Franz Josef Silber. “We also wanted to ensure soil protection via a bigger footprint and fewer passes.” Case IH has also unveled a number of product updates for 2024. Designed for the largest farms and contractors, the LB 436 HD, large square baler receives some important upgrades, centered around a new load-sensing hydraulic system. This allows operations typically activated from the rear of the baler, to be controlled from the cab via the baler monitor or tractor ISOBUS terminal. It includes full or partial bale ejection and opening or closing of the bale chute. For full event details and to secure tickets, visit www.lammashow.com

Greater versatility for strip-tillage preparator

G

range Machinery has extended the versatility of the Strip-Till Preparator with wider working widths and a range of options to tailor the operation to suit conditions and crop requirements. A 6m Strip-Till Preparator will be unveiled at LAMMA, designed with the help of customer feedback to improve soil preparation for the establishment of maize, sugar beet and oilseed rape while preserving soil moisture and working a wider range of conditions. Extensive testing of prototypes on-farm over two seasons led to a range of modifications and the Strip-Till Preparator went into full production in 2023. The development process has produced a machine with a highly effective cultivation layout, says Grange Machinery.

er ring which breaks down any clods that have flowed through the system as well as consolidating the row in readiness for a planter.” A one-pass cultivation system, the Strip-Till Preparator can be used immediately before planting or at the convenience of the operator, with no need to freshen up ahead of the planter. “The Strip-Till Preparator provides an intensive cultivation in the row, which preserves soil moisture and facilitates drilling into the perfect environment for successful establishment,” says Mr Jones. “The discs are uniquely ad-

justable from the cab for varying soil types and conditions.” Options include the application of granular or liquid fertiliser down the low disturbance tine, offering valuable starter nutrition. To adapt to different crops and conditions, the Strip-Till Preparator can now be specified

in 0.45m, 0.5m, 0.6m, 0.75m and 0.8m row spacing and with either shear bolt or hydraulic autoreset leg protection. For the establishment of larger acreages and to work with more powerful tractors, a 6m version of the Strip-Till Preparator has been added alongside 3m, 4m and 4.5m models

Independent rows Managing director Rhun Jones says the machine has been designed to be strong, efficient and versatile. “Three independent rows of 450mm diameter cultivation discs can be hydraulically adjusted while working in harmony with our low disturbance tine and point, which creates a perfectly cultivated row that is ready to plant into. “The seedbed is then finished with a zonal Guttler prism roll-

Merlo to showcase new compact telehandlers

T

elehandler specialist Merlo UK has announced the launch of two additions to its product range at LAMMA. The Turbofarmer 30.7 is specifically designed to meet the demands of those working in confined spaces such a traditional farmyard settings. It is described as the much-anticipated successor to the P32.6 model favoured for many years by livestock farmers.

The compact overall dimensions of this new model at just 2m wide and 2.10m high which can be lowered further still to 1.90 mtr high with a low cab option, meaning it can reach places many other handlers in its class cannot.

Performace Despite its compact dimensions the new TF30.7 packs a punch when it comes to performance, powered by a 100hp Deutz TCD

12 Essential Farm Machinery December 2023

4-cylinder Stage V diesel engine this new model offers almost 7m of reach and a 3-ton lift capacity.

Performace Meanwhile, the new Merlo Turbofarmer 27.6 represents a compromise between size and power, with compact dimensions still offering excellent performance. The TF27.6 offers several new features including an enhanced hydraulic system with flow sharing

control offering hydraulic flow to 95l/min ensuring the possibility of operating up to three hydraulic movements simultaneously. The machine has a 6m reach and 2.7t lift capacity and a new high torque hydrostatic driveline transmission. This has been developed with a 150cc oversized hydrostatic motor, allowing the vehicle to reach a maximum road speed of up to 40kph, says Merlo.

Agricast to launch its latest press roll ring

R

eplacement parts supplier Agricast will unveil its latest press roll ring on Stand 320 in Hall 20 at LAMMA 24. The company has been supplying Cambridge roll rings, disc blades, subsoiler wear parts and custom-made packers for over 35 years. It will use the two-day event to launch its 560mm lightweight ring. The PRR-560-LW is the fourth product to feature in Agricast’s press roll ring range, which was introduced in 2018 and includes the 610, 710 and 610-LW.

Greater durability Designed for the Simba Mounted Xpress machine and retrofittable to other cultivators such as the McConnel Shaker, the new ring has a 560mm diameter, making it slightly larger than the original. It is also slightly thicker for greater durability and longevity.

The Agricast press roll ring range, with the new PRR-560-LW on the left.

“Our new 560mm lightweight ring completes our range of press roll rings,” says William Robinson, managing director. “Our PRR 610 and 710s have been incredibly well received since they were introduced in 2018. “Since then, we have sold more than 150 tonnes of this style of ring and are only starting to see our first customers ordering replacement rings – that’s how well they’re made and how long they last.” Mr Robinson spent 18 months developing Agricast’s first two press roll rings, which fit Double Press and CultiPress packers. The rings are manufactured from heat-treated Bo-

ron steel, which offer greater longevity than cast ring wheels. The ring is a closed wheel to prevent stones from jamming it, which can happen with cast rings. Agricast has improved the design by adding small cutaways to the outer edge, which improves traction and the wheel’s ability to shatter or fissure hard, dry soil. “As well as being around 30% cheaper than the original, Agricast’s press roll ring offers greater durability,” says Mr Robinson. “With 20% more metal, we are offering a longer-lasting product that will not wear through as quickly on the shoulders.”
