The Full Monty

Disney+, 14 June

Don't

You can leave your hat on, baby. While you’re at it, maybe leave everything else on too; this isn’t that sort of magazine. It’s been 25 years since Gaz, Dave and the rest of the Sheffield striptease act took the country by storm in the original Oscarnominated film. This limited series follows the original characters as they navigate a changing Sheffield - a town that reflects the troubles the rest of the UK is seeing in its healthcare, education and emplyment sectors. It’ll be full of the charm of the original film where people suffering hardship find a better way forward together. The Full Monty was always more than meets the eye - in more ways that one.

Black Mirror Season 6

Netflix, June

Charlie Brooker’s critically acclaimed and unsettling series is back for another series. Since the show made the jump to Netflix, more and more Hollywood stars are appearing in the society-reflecting stories. This season look out for performances from Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), John Hannah (The Mummy), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and Salma Hayek (Frida, The Eternals).

Secret Invasion

Disney+, 21 June

Samuel L. Jackson returns as Nick Fury and finds himself swept up in a global conspiracy in this science-fiction thriller from Marvel. No-one is who they seem as the shape-shifting Skrulls that can make themselves look like anyone are invading Earth taking positions of power. This cross-over event will bring back some favourites from previous Marvel adventures plus there’re new characters played by Olivia Coleman (The Crown), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

The Witcher Season 3, Part 1

Netflix, 29 June

Toss a coin to your Witcher! I love a good fantasy series and as much as I enjoyed the first season of The Witcher, I didn’t have much of an idea of what was happening with the various stories sent during different times and all that. The slightly more linear narrative of the second season was much more palatable. The only problem with the new season is that we’re getting it spread over two halves! Henry Cavill is back as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, charged with protecting Ciri. Monarchs, mages and beasts of the continent are hunting down Ciri and it will take everything that he and Yenefer have to keep her safe. It’s a bittersweet return as it’s Henry Cavill’s last series as Geralt before Liam Hemsworth takes over for the fourth series.

The Idol

Sky Atlantic/NOW TV, 5 June

This brand new series, created by Sam Levinson, showrunner of Euphoria and music sensation, The Weekend, is sure to be a hot topic of discussion. It follows a rising pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complicated relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader, played by The Weekend himself. Expect scandolous scenes throughout.

Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run

2 July

The iconic Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run is set to return in style this year as the event races towards a fundraising total of £1m. Marking its 20th anniversary on Sunday 2 July a convoy of more than 100 decorated tractors swathed in pink will snake its way through south Norfolk and north Suffolk. To date, the event has raised £896,000 in aid of Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer appeal and this year the Pink Ladies hope to raise the £104,000 needed to reach £1m.

Organised by Annie Chapman, she said: “There is a great air of excitement about the Run this year, a real buzz! I have received above the average number of entries for this time of the year including quite a few new ones. To anyone who is thinking of taking part, don’t hesitate to fill out the form. If it’s a tractor you’re worried about then there’s always people willing to put their tractors forward. And if you’re scared, the support you’re given is like no other and always remember it’s one day of the year for us, that affects the lives of so many others.”

Jeremy Dunn, Owner and Chief Wine Tutor at Norfolk Wine School told me “Norfolk Wine School has been enhancing people’s enjoyment of wine for over seven years by hosting fun and engaging wine tastings, courses and food and wine events. I love seeing the light-bulb moment on guests faces when they realise the difference just a little bit of wine knowledge makes when choosing wines in shops, bars and restaurants.”

Jeremy explained why he wanted to get involved with Norwich Wine Week: “A weeklong celebration of wine is a great new addition to the local food and drink calendar. It’s a wonderful way for anybody interested in wine to meet with local wine experts and vineyards in a relaxed, festival environment and discover new wines from all around the world. It’s also a great chance to explore the wines made by local vineyards.

Awareness is increasing, but I doubt many people realise just how good they are. We’ve got the right climate, a rapidly growing number of vineyards and most importantly a whole bunch of enthusiastic and talented winemakers making awardwinning, world-class still and sparkling wines right on our doorstep. There’s a lot to get excited about!”

Meet the Vineyards

Enjoy a chat with a passionate wine expert from all of the featured local vineyards and more importantly (almost!), try their wines. There is a lot to learnfind out what goes into making wine in Norfolk, the variety of grapes grown, how our climate makes wine making so successful, sustainable practises, and how traditional wine making traditions are followed. You can also find out about the experiences they are offering on site, at their vineyards, if you want to head out and visit them another time. Which I thoroughly recommend!

Burn Valley Vineyard is situated on

a family farm in North Creake (3 miles south of Burnham Market). Born of an idea from John Robinson in 2015, his two daughters – Laura and Samanthawork on the vineyard whilst their brother farms the surrounding land. The family are immensely proud to call Norfolk their home and want to capture its essence in a bottle.

Chet Valley Vineyard can be found in Bergh Apton just 20 minutes-drive from Norwich in South Norfolk. In 2022 Chet Valley was named by The Times as one of the best UK vineyards you can stay the night – and having visited myself I can see why. Winemaker John

Hemmant, uses a uniquely sustainable philosophy, deeply rooted in respect for the natural element of winemaking and the beautiful environment of the vineyard. The vineyard has a collection of award-winning artisan English wines year-on-year, from fruit-forward rosés to aromatic whites with a wide range of still and sparkling wines. In fact, Chet Valley is the only Norfolk vineyard to make and bottle on site their delicious sparkling

vineyard on the outskirts of the village in North Norfolk. Their first vines were planted in 2016 by Robert Perowne, an experienced farmer, who had dreamt of planting his own vineyard decades before it happened. He chose three varieties to ensure they would thrive - Pinot Noir, one of the oldest known varieties, Bacchus, an earlier ripening, reliable, and consistent grape variety, and Chardonnay.

wine which is made by the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle. The vineyard estate spans over 10 hectares of family-owned land with sheltered and sun-soaked fields.

Babu’s Vineyard is a small artisan vineyard 17 miles northwest of Norwich in Weston Longville. It began in 2009 when retired Peter Ross decided to plant a vineyard with the help of friends and neighbours. Today, Peter has established a winery which has subsequently produced a succession of award-winning wines.

Cobble Hill Vineyard in Burnham Market is an award winning 3.6-hectare,

The Paper Palace

Teddy and Becca were best friends as children. They spent every summer together at the Paper Palace, their family’s beach house. But one summer, something happened that changed everything.

Twenty-five years later, Teddy and Becca are reunited at the Paper Palace. They reminisce about their childhood friendship and the summer they spent together, which ended in tragedy. As they talk, they begin to realize that they still have feelings for each other. But is it too late?

The Paper Palace is a moving and heartbreaking novel about love, loss and friendship. It’s a story about the power of first love and the importance of second chances.

The Midnight Library

Nora Seed is stuck in a rut. She’s unhappy with her job, her relationships, and her life in general. One night, she decides to end it all. But instead of finding herself dead, she finds herself in the Midnight Library.

The Midnight Library is a place where Nora can explore all the other lives she could have lived. She can be a famous actress, a world-renowned scientist, or a successful businesswoman. She can have the perfect husband, the perfect children, and the perfect house. But as she explores these different lives, she begins to realize that none of them are perfect. They all have their own problems and challenges.

Nora eventually realises that the perfect life doesn’t exist. What matters is finding the life that’s right for you. And that’s the lesson she takes away from her time in the Midnight Library.

Food, Glorious

it is simply a bag of chips, a stir fry, burritos, jerk chicken or churros, street food really is the current foodie craze. The dishes have global appeal and certainly get our taste buds going as you can find Thai, Indian, Chinese, American dishes, and more - all on offer.

Forget that idea from your youth, that it will be all greasy burgers or dodgy kebabs. Sure, you will find lots of burgers but they will all be homemade, freshly cooked and more likely to be made with halloumi and served with sweet chilli jam in a brioche bun!

Our passion for street food really took off in the pandemic. All that home cooking was fine for a while but we were desperate to eat out, for someone else to do the thinking, the shopping, the cooking and, of course, the washing up.

As we couldn’t, for what seems a lifetime, visit our favourite pubs,

restaurants and cafes, so street food became our salvation. Trailers, converted horseboxes, old VW camper vans, food carts and more started to pop up just about everywhere they were allowed - from village hall car parks, to pub gardens and more. And we tucked in with gusto.

Even as life slowly but surely returned to normal, our love affair with street food has continued and more and more vendors have started out. And the trend has evolved from pop up foodie concessions to permanent food courts, where a number of different traders offer a variety of different dishes.

Norwich-based chef and food blogger Zena Leech Calton says: ‘When Covid struck, us foodies still wanted feeding and many caterers and restaurants obliged with the original comfort food which is street food. Trailers and food trucks went for silly money and restaurants were selling out of their meal kits. The tail end of that is that Norfolk has shifted in style, with weddings and events now often catered for via food trucks.

‘Every fete which, in days gone by, had just a burger van now has half a dozen street food vendors, and the demand is there. Norfolk is one of the foodiest counties in Britain, and we love anything we can grab and eat. Tacos, bao buns, smashed patties, and plant based wraps have become the norm as we expect freshness, local produce and, above all else, flavour.’

Norwich is increasingly seen as a serious foodie destination, with the market as a real highlight

At Norwich’s Castle Quarter, centre manager Rob Bradley explains why he took the decision to open Castle Social which is home to four independent and local street food kitchens, a dessert emporium, and a bar last November.

‘Castle Social launched late last year as an independent-led street-food hall and entertainment venue and is very much part of this new wave of community food halls. Our former food court has been reimagined into a space where local, specialist street food kitchens offer an exciting, varied range of high-quality dishes. There’s lots of choice, all served up in a relaxed setting.

‘The Pinker and Green drinks palace sits in the middle, and around it, we’ve got Hank’s Dirty Norwich offering a full vegan menu, Curry Box serving

Another new face is Norwich’s historic Royal Arcade. Yalm is a Norfolk word meaning to ‘eat hungrily’ and you are encouraged to do just that! Run by Dan Searle, the two storey building has six kitchens and three bars, with traders including North Norfolk and house run by Norwich’s Derek Hardy. It opens six days a week, there’s no need to book and it is all very casual and fun.

Indian street food, Street Food box specialising in dirty burgers and loaded fries, Mamma Mia’s, serving authentic Italian dishes including arancini balls, pasta specials and pizzas and the Dessert Emporium for something sweet.

“The beauty of this type of casual dining is that the choice is firmly in the hands of the individual. When picking a restaurant, it can be tricky to find somewhere that caters for everyone in your party. There might be dietary requirements or different tastes, but with street food halls, individuals can order from a different menu and kitchen, there’s no need for compromise.

“We’re bringing lots of international flavours to Norwich via Castle Social, with a wide range of dishes, mains and specials, which are all affordable. People

want plenty to pick from, and they want something different, that isn’t expensive or comes with a service charge.

‘Norwich is a close-knit community, and people have been keen to support and discover local independent food businesses. We’re always interested to hear from more local independents and food start-ups who want to join us at Castle Social, so we can continue adding new kitchens and menus - as we continue to create an exciting, eclectic place to eat out.’

Junkyard in Norwich, situated in St Mary’s Works, opened in 2021 and offers changing vendors who might sell anything from pasta dishes to hot dogs to cake shakes in funky surroundings, with decent music. with street food options including pizzas,

burgers and vegetarian Mexican dishes from Eagle and Cactus which sound fun! It’s in the former Empire theatre, which dates back to 1911, so continues a long tradition of entertaining punters.

And in Lowestoft, East Point Pavilion, right on the seafront, is another great choice for some exciting street food. The bright and airy building is home to a selection of street food concessions, including Tres Hermanas which offers Mexican street food, plus a bar.

At Holkham, Feast in the Park is another example of something that started in lockdown and is continuing because of its popularity. Head of marketing Lucy Downing explains: ‘Feast

in the Park has proved an extremely popular and joyous event, giving people the chance to relish delicious local street food created by so many talented artisans, whilst enjoying the incredible views over the lake within Holkham Park.

‘It began in 2020 as a response to everyone coming out of lockdown and wishing to reconnect with close friends and family outdoors. This is still something our visitors wish to do, and so Feast in the Park returns for its fourth year this summer. The Adnams bar will join us again, providing refreshing drinks including ales made with Holkham malting barley.’

Food festivals

The region’s food festivals are another great way of trying a wide variety of different street food concessions. The Norfolk North Food Festival, held in the Walled Garden at Holkham on September 2 and 3, is offering 15 food and drink pop ups - all provided by local artisan producers. Think Algy’s pizza, Arthur Howell hog roasts, beers from Malt Coast Brewery and Thai dishes from Phat Khao. Festival chair Chris Coubrough says: ‘Our food concessions area is really popular and an important part of what the festival offers - we try to offer a good, diverse selection so all tastes are catered for. And we have certainly seen a big increase in the choice of food available - nobody needs to go hungry!’

The last Friday night in the month is Street Food Friday at Barsham Brewery, near Fakenham. Running until August, there’s live music plus a selection of great vendors like Double Dutch with their sweet treats, Elsie’s Pizzas and the South African Durban Grill - and plenty of beer! Admission is free and you don’t have to book so just turn up from 4-9pm. And you can bring the dog too.

The Fflolkes at Hillington in west Norfolk is another pub that’s really embraced the street food trend. Mollie Gallon explains that they started to host food trailers during the pandemic and quickly realised their appeal. ‘It was when we couldn’t do anything inside that we started to have street food trailers and people loved it - and it was obviously good for the traders, too.

‘As their popularity was amazing, we have adapted and developed our street food offerings under the name of Ffolkes Feast. Now traders come in and take over our kitchens - we have two at a time. Traders include Oishi Street Kitchen, and Guac and Mole Pie Kitchen.

‘People like it as there’s plenty of choice, it is always good for vegetarians and vegans and you get to try something different.’

Vikki Hunt, landlord at the Fox in Lyng, near Dereham, has a street food vendor each Monday, from 5-8pm, until September, with everything from curries to crepes, paella, pizza and more. ‘We’ve been doing it for about eight years after seeing it in operation in London. We have one savoury and one sweet offering and it changes every week. It is great for families and we can have up to 250 people - it’s really popular.

‘We shut our kitchen for the night but the bar is open so it all works very well.’

You’ll find the truck at leading concerts and festivals around the country including Glastonbury and he has a resident pitch at Spitalfields in London. Ed reckons street food trailers offer a great starting point for chefs, with foodies benefitting from restaurant quality food at reasonable prices. ‘It’s served quickly, and very well, and everyone loves it,’ he says.

Mr Ragu

Started by Gino and Millie in 2021 the passionate hospitality professionals are on a mission to bring the Italian love of food to Norfolk. They serve Italian food which is hand-made using sustainable ingredients from local suppliers.

Mr Ragu’s trademark sandwich, the Ragu Ciabatta, was inspired by a meatball panino at the legendary sandwich bar Mordi e Vai in Testaccio Market, Rome. This was during a cycling trip from Turin to Francavilla Fontana in Puglia where Gino and Millie learnt the Italian love for the very best food and experienced the warmth of Italian hospitality.

Gino said, ”We serve Italian food which is hand-made with love using sustainable ingredients from local suppliers. We offer our Build Your Own Wedding Feast packages which range

Fupburger

The idea was born out of a passion for quality; basically, Fupburger founder Tom got fed up with having to go to all the way to London to get a decent burger! The generic standard of burgers seemed to be so wide of the mark. Cold, dry buns. Cheap, pre-pressed beef trim pattys. Bog standard sauces. Tom knew that there was a gaping hole in the market for something with some real quality and thought behind it. By introducing his own blend of beef, ageing and grind process, from high welfare, fully traceable cattle, he believed that people would be able to taste the difference. Fortunately, that was indeed the case! All of the beef Tom uses is bred, reared, aged and butchered within a 10 mile radius; just north of Norwich. Does it get better than that? It doesn’t just

from nibbles all the way to a threecourse sit-down meal. One of these options is of course our classic street food menu - home to the one-and-only, world-famous Ragu Ciabatta. We have fantastic options across the board for vegetarians and vegans as well as being able to cater for a wide range of dietary requirements.”

“Whatever the format, our focus is always on the quality of the food, the enjoyment it brings to our guests, supporting a local food economy, and doing it all with nature in mind. This is the Italian way of eating; it is a food culture which goes beyond pizza and pasta. We know our food will be a special feature of your special day.”

stop at the beef though. A major part of Fupburger’s success has been to work with local independent bakers to supply them with their trademark, non seeded buttery demi brioche buns. Tom try’s to work with as many local producers as possible who share the same quality standards as he does and he always uses the best ingredients for the job. Tom is proud to be the first to bring smashed patty burgers to this most excellent part of the world.

Fupburger offers a dine in and collection service from the wonderful Ten Bells on St Benedicts Street, Norwich and also deliveries via their delivery partner UberEats.

Fajitas Chicken

This favourite Mexican sharing platter is fun, vibrant, colourful, and fabulous street food.

INGREDIENTS:

Makes 4-6

• 4-6 tortilla wraps (white, wholegrain or gluten free)

• 4 chicken breasts

• 1 Tbsp olive oil

• 2 cloves of garlic (chopped finely

• 1 red onion, chopped

• Sweetcorn, tinned or frozen

• 2 bell peppers (sliced)

• Your choice of ART’s chutneys: BBQ chutney, Allotment chutney, Southwold Sandfire, Indian Summer

• 1 bag of mixed leaf salad

Guacamole

• 2 to 3 avocados (smashed)

• 2 salad tomatoes (diced)

• 1 red onion (diced)

• Juice of 1 lemon

METHOD:

- Slice the chicken breasts (in to bite sized peices) bite sid- and season with salt and pepper. Warm the oil on a medium heat and then add the chicken slices to the pan, fry the chicken until it has become golden brown for about 15 minutes. Five minutes before the chicken is cooked add the sliced peppers, onion, garlic and sweetcorn to the pan in order to soften. Stir in two or three spoonfuls of your ART’s chutney of choice. When everything is cooked, place into a large dish and place on the table so everyone can help themselves.

- Whilst the chicken is cooking, prepare the guacamole by placing all the ingredients into a bowl and mixing well.

- For each person, serve them a tortilla wrap and start the fajita assembly by first spreading your chosen ART’s chutney onto the tortilla. Spoon on some of the chicken mix, then add some guacamole and mixed salad. Then roll it up and enjoy!

Offer an Olive Branch

Theolive may be a small fruit, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in variety and flavour, which makes the topic of olives and wine pairing especially complex and interesting.

The mixture of flavours come from the many locations they are grown as well as the curing process used. This can impact which beverage to serve with your salty and sometimes bitter, antipasto. Our instore experts have pulled together three pairings to ensure your palate will be sated this summer.

Ask the Expert

Manzanilla, a Spanish olive, is light with a plump meaty texture and these Don Gastronom Ole Olives Almond Stuffed Manzanilla Olives (580ml, £8.50) combine the olives’ fruity flavour with the crunch of almond. This pairs well with a dry Spanish Cava or Fino and the Barbadillo Fino Pale Dry (75cl, £13) has a lovely pale straw colour and wonderful dry finish.

Cerignola is popular buttery, sweet olive from the Puglia region in Italy which works brilliantly in starters and salads. Pair this juicy olive with a refreshing white like Pinot Grigio and the Corte Giara Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie (75cl, £12) which has aromas of pear accompanied by wildflowers and a subtle, delicate, smoky nuance.

Kalamata is a famed Greek olive which is harvested fully ripe and then brine cured. Oblong in shape and ranging in color from purple to black, Odysea Vegan Big Kalamata Pitted Olives (165g, £4) make the perfect partner for this Louis Guntrum Pinot Noir (75cl, £18) which has cherry and raspberry-like flavours with a hint of oak.

Penne for your thoughts

There’s something about pasta this time of year – maybe it brings back memories of holidays on the Italian coast or we are looking for that summertime alternative to potatoes? The humble pasta dish becomes a Mediterranean feast to be enjoyed outdoors.

Seggiano

Organic Gluten Free Tagliatelle, 250g, £4 Gourmet, certified gluten-free pasta, slow dried and made using just mountain spring water and premium Italian rice and corn.

Cornwall

Pasta Co

Wild Garlic Campanelle, 350g, £8

Handf-oraged Cornish wild garlic is added to our signature organic semolina dough to produce this mouth-watering pasta you won’t find anywhere else.

I Love Italia

Pappardelle Bronze Drawn Egg Pasta, 250g, £3.50

Pappardelle goes excellently with strong meat sauces such as game, duck, or wild boar. This choice is ideal for capturing all the flavour and colour of the favourite sauce when pasta will be tossed in pan.

Rosé-tinted summer

Whether enjoying with your al fresco feast or after a busy day relaxing in the garden, nothing quite compares to that cool glass of pink-tinted wine to bring a smile to your face. Refreshing, crisp and fragrant, a bottle of rosé says summer and sunshine. Often with notes of summer fruits such as peach and strawberry, its chilled nature make it the perfect seasonal sip.

When looking for the perfect food pairings for rosé, even the food speak of lazy summer days. Soft cheeses such as Brie or goat’s cheese, seafood (especially salmon) and hummus with fresh flatbreads, are great partners for elegant glass of wine.

There are plenty of delicate rosés from across the Channel but there’s nothing quite like an English rose.

This crisp blush from Winbirri, a vineyard located right here in Norfolk, makes a delightful beverage to serve before a meal, or paired with seafood, but make sure it’s on your favourite garden chair in some glorious sunshine.

Double AT THE Insp ing women

Acle’s Olivia Nicholls is one of Britain’s leading tennis players in action at next month’s Wimbledon Championships Sarah Hardy finds out more

Olivia Nicholls

is a hard woman to track down. As a professional tennis player, she travels the world, competing in numerous competitions with her doubles partner, Alicia Barnett. I finally catch up with her in Portugal as she takes part in the Oeiras Open in Lisbon, and she was off to Germany the following week, or was it Morocco?

She tells me that in the opening four or five months of the year she has perhaps been in Britain for about two weeks, but she certainly isn’t fazed by her globetrotting lifestyle. ‘It’s just what I do - and I have been doing it for about five years. I’m away more than I’m home so it is pretty full on, but I can’t complain. I get to see some great places and I do a little sightseeing when I get some time off.’

She adds: ‘You certainly learn to pack light, and pick up anything you need along the way!’

Olivia, now aged 28, has been playing tennis since she was four years old, benefitting, no doubt, from her mum,

Ann, being a coach at her local tennis club in Acle. Her older brother, Henry, also played when he was younger and so provided a great practice partner.

‘I loved all sports,’ Olivia says, adding that she has represented Norfolk at tennis in all age groups from the so-called ‘mini-red’ category for little ones aged just five upwards. But she never really thought about becoming a professional tennis player, saying: ‘I wasn’t sure I was good enough.’

She studied Sports Science with Management at Loughborough University, where she also played tennis for the first team. ‘I improved a lot there - there were great facilities and good coaching, and it opened my eyes to what might be possible.’

She graduated in 2016, and turned professional in 2017. ‘So I’ve been doing it ever since apart from breaks because of the pandemic, and I had a pretty serious shoulder injury.’

She cites this injury as a main reason for her move into playing doubles, saying that doubles put less strain on it. ‘You only serve once every four games, rather than every other game.’

She hooked up with her current doubles partner, Alicia Barnett, aged 29 from the Bath area, about 18 months ago. ‘We had played together before, on the university circuit, and did really well. And we are good friends too, which really helps.’

Olivia says they have different strengths which bolsters their overall game. ‘She is good at the baseline and I’m good at the net so we complement each other.’

Olivia is hopeful that she and Alicia will qualify for the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris in May, although it all depends on what other players opt to do, how they themselves perform, and more. ‘We should make the cut,’ she says, adding: ‘I haven’t played it before so I would really love to.’

She is sure they will compete at Wimbledon as they are the country’s number one doubles team, saying: ‘It is a special competition - I grew up watching it on television, and now grass is my favourite surface to play on. And my family and friends can come and see me too, so it is great fun.’

thrive on those big occasions - it is part of being a sportsperson. I have been playing for a long time, and I have played a few matches where the crowd isn’t really with you!’

Away from tennis, Olivia loves to cook

stretching, as well as gym work and on court practice, too. ‘It is a job - we travel with foam rollers and massage guns and on tour there are physiotherapists. You do have to work on your mobility, especially if you’ve had lots of long haul flights and you need strong muscles for long matches.’

She also pays tribute to her long term coach, Tom Kisiel, who is based at Loughborough University. ‘He knows me well and I trust him,’ and she says that she isn’t intimidated or nervous about playing high pressure tennis matches in front of big crowds - however hostile they might be. ‘I

although she admits she doesn’t get as much opportunity as she would like as she is often travelling. She is a vegetarian and knows how important a balanced diet is to her overall health and fitness levels. ‘I am on it. It is second nature now to make sure I get all I need, especially protein. And there is so much more choice nowadays, it is much easier.’

She also follows a strict exercise routine, making sure there is lots of

Olivia thinks she will carry on playing the tour circuit for another four or five years, and then reassess where she is. ‘I’d like to have a family at some point and I might just do something different - use my degree. I don’t think I fancy being a coach but I’m just enjoying what I do at the moment.’

Her advice to any young aspiring tennis player is simply to persevere. ‘Just keep on at it. Eat well and enjoy it and don’t worry too much about rankings and ratings.’

Gardening with Tom Strowlger

If the grass is growing quickly and is lush green, then we can cut it once per week. During very hot and dry spells grass can become straw like so we should cut the grass less often and on the highest setting to reduce stress and the risk of disease. We should also trim the edges of our lawns to keep them looking neat and tidy.

We can encourage butterflies and bees into the garden by letting a patch of grass grow to its natural height. If we want to create our own wildlife area in the garden, whatever the size, then we can choose a space to be a wild patch. The position should ideally be at the back of the garden and with part shade,

Weare in flaming June, the month us gardeners enjoy; sunny, warm and long days in our gardens. June is officially the midpoint of the gardening calendar, so far this year we have seen the garden progress from a state of dormancy into a colourful and lush green space. The garden is beautiful at this time of year, at its most verdant, and although a gardener’s work is never really finished we should not feel guilty for spending time enjoying the garden.

We should wander amongst our plants and flowers on a daily basis, a gentle and relaxing stroll is both good for our wellbeing and for spotting any little jobs to maintain and improve the beds and borders. We may notice that floral arrangements are overcrowded, if so we can thin them out and put the flower cuttings into a vase for indoor arrangements.

The lawn grass will be growing quickly if the weather is rainy and warm and slower if the weather is hot and dry.

this will encourage wildlife into the area and prevent too much disturbance whilst you are enjoying the garden.

If entering the summer gardening planting party a little late then don’t worry; we can still plant out nursery grown begonia, petunia, aster, salvia, rudbeckia, zinnia, verbena, dephinium, pansy, geranium, lobelia and thunbergia. Once planted into your borders, beds, pots and tubs, the established plugs will grow bigger and give you a summer of floral colour. We must remember to regularly water our plants and flowers to get the very best displays from them.

The rose flowering season is with us and many will have had a first bloom in late spring continuing into early summer. We should deadhead the faded and spent roses by pinching and pruning to ensure the plants energy is preserved for future blooms. We need to look out for aphids amongst the new growth and ideally remove them with a soapy spray or the gentle stroke of a clean and unused soft paintbrush.

June is a great month to take a step back from the gardening jobs and admire what we have created so far, whilst also taking note of what we want to see in the garden next summertime. The sun never completely sets on our gardening jobs and projects but whilst the sun is shining we really must choose a peaceful spot for our sun lounger and get comfortable.

Able Community Care has been in the same family for four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK.

Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home.

Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers.

Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information.

Recently these questions have been asked of us...

ask Angela

Question: I am seeking care for an older relative of mine and I note that the national association for home care providers is recommending an hourly rate of £25.95 per hour. Local agencies may not charge this rate but how can I find out for any hourly rate how much the care worker will be paid per hour without actually engaging with a company? Online web sites do not break down the cost.

Answer: When looking for a care support service it is always a good idea to contact more than one care provider in order that you can contrast the services that are being offered. This includes asking any questions about the service that you wish to ask, and asking how much per hour the actual care worker would receive is a valid question to ask.

Question: Do you know which supermarkets and large stores provide wheelchairs for customers use?

Answer: We recently ask our live-in carers this question and the response showed that the main stores providing a wheelchair for customers use are Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrison’s, M&S and B&Q.

Question: Is there a sugar free, substitute for ordinary icing sugar?

Answer: Canderel Bake is an icing sugar alternative. Tesco’s and other supermarkets will stock it.

Question: I must attend hospital on a regular basis for outpatient treatment. The car parking charges are expensive and I would like to know if there are any reductions available.

Answer: The following comes from NHS car parking guidance 2022 for NHS Trusts and NHS Foundation Trusts: Frequent outpatient attenders Parking will be provided free to all outpatients who attend hospital for an appointment at least three times within a month and for an overall period of at least 3 months. A ‘month’ is defined as a period of 30 days It is however ‘guidance’ so check with the hospital you attend.

Resistance Training

This month we’re talking about Resistance Training

The

Resistance

training, also known as strength training, is exercise that uses weights or resistance to build muscular endurance, strength and size. There’s a wealth of evidence to suggest that it can play an important part in protecting us from a huge range of health concerns including some cancers, dementia, menopause, bone density and heart disease. That’s just the tip of the iceberg; dive a bit deeper and you’ll find that there are very few health concerns that wouldn’t benefit in some way from resistance training.

The thought of lifting weights can conjure up all sorts of intimidating images of gyms full of hulking great muscle-bound types, lifting impossibly large weights, which can be enough to put some people off before they even get started! Fear not! Resistance training doesn’t have to be done in a gym, but if you do want to join your local facility there will be staff on hand to show you round and help you settle in.

With the right approach and a bit of guidance, anyone can begin to build strength and see results. Here are some tips for getting started.

GET SOME ADVICE

Whether you find a simple fitness plan online, or have a personal trainer write a bespoke plan for you, it is important to have a plan. This will ensure that you are working the various muscle groups in a balanced and effective way. It also ensures that you make effective use of your time as you’re not wandering around wondering what to do next!

START WITH BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES

If you’ve never used weights before, it’s a good idea to build a foundation of strength using your own bodyweight. Exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges can help you develop strength and improve your form, without the need for any equipment. They’re also a great way to warm up before moving on to heavier weights.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WEIGHT

When you’re ready to start lifting weights, it’s important to choose the right amount of weight for your fitness level. Start with a weight that feels challenging but not too heavy, and gradually increase the weight as you get stronger. Aim for 8-12 repetitions of each exercise, and try to complete 2-3 sets of each exercise.

FOCUS ON

PROPER FORM

I'm a 41 year old mother of two and Personal Fitness coach. I work one to one, in person & online with clients aged 18-80. My specialisms include pre and postnatal training, cancer rehab, pilates, and GP exercise referrals. I run fitness classes online and in person in the Suffolk Coastal area. I am also a Mental Health First aider.

training. Aim to work out at least 2-3 times per week, and try to stick to a regular schedule. Sessions don’t have to be long and arduous to be effective! A 30 minute workout is more than adequate to see health benefits.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

A set of dumbbells like these are a great place to start if you want to workout at home

Body Sculpture 19kg

Smart Dumbbell Tower £49.99

www.workoutforless.co.uk

One of the most important aspects of resistance training is proper form and technique. This not only helps prevent injury, but also ensures that you’re targeting the right muscles and getting the most out of each exercise. In my experience this is something that people struggle with the most. If you’re not sure about proper form, consider working with a personal trainer to learn the basics.

BE CONSISTENT

Like any form of exercise, consistency is key when it comes to resistance

Finally, it’s important to listen to your body when you’re starting out with resistance training. It’s normal to feel a bit sore after a workout for up to around 48 hrs, but if you’re experiencing sharp pain or discomfort, it’s a sign that you may need to adjust your technique or take a break. Don’t be tempted to push yourself too hard too soon, aim to start with 2-3 sessions per week and try to allow a couple of days between each workout for your body to recover.

It’s that time of year

again when we, the British collective, turn our faces upward in the hope of seeing brilliant blue skies coming to move those grey clouds on their drizzly way. Because - if nothing else - we are baselessly optimistic. Regardless of the weather, the summer solstice will arrive on Wednesday 21st June heralding the astronomical start of summer in the northern hemisphere. Coming from the Latin ‘sol’ and ‘sistere’, the term translates roughly as the ‘sun standing still’ which is attributed to the day as it has the most hours of daylight. Having the sun’s undivided attention certainly feels like cause for celebration so here are some subtle nods you can incorporate into your mid-June hum pday to acknowledge

worm, preferably with a large cup of something strongly caffeinated.

Over in Sweden our continental cousins will be getting ready for their Midsummer celebrations. Dating back to the early 1500’s and rooted in agrarian society, Midsummer was originally a festival of fertility. Flower crowns were worn as a sign of potency and young women would pick seven different types of flowers to place under their pillows in the hope of dreaming of their future husbands. Today, Swedes often migrate to the countryside with family and friends to partake in festivities like dancing around maypoles, decorating the house with greenery and enjoying food, such as pickled herring and cured

salmon in the great outdoors. Try dialling into the Scandinavian way of life and decorate with florals, make a picnic or have your lunch in the park. Flower up your outfit and wear those blooms with all the pride of a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. If you’re feeling daring, think like Kirstie Allsopp and make your own maypole. There’s bound to be a tutorial for that online.

If pickled herring isn’t cutting the mustard, why not try actual mustard, on some barbequed meats? The Finnish also celebrate Midsummer, albeit it with a pyrotechnic twist. Nordic inhabitants’ light large bonfires on the eve of Midsummer to keep away the evil spirits and to promote a healthy harvest. Save next door’s fence and a visit from the fire brigade by enjoying a conservative evening round the fire pit. Throw some burgers on the barbeque and partake in a pared down (but delicious) version of the Finnish festivity.

Similarly, Spaniards celebrate the Night of San Juan (St. John) with large bonfires on the beach and a cleansing dip in the ocean. St John’s Eve is June 23rd but is closely associated with the summer solstice due to its proximity on the calendar. Fire is symbolic of St John’s celebrations from Croatia to Ireland. The fires are lit to burn away bad memories and to make wishes for the new season whereas taking a plunge in the ocean is said to come from the romantic notion of finding a partner. Whilst some people like to see in the New Year with a bracing seaside splash, why not try the North Sea for the (mildly) more agreeable June water and welcome summertime feeling refreshed and rejuvenated? Just don’t forget your towel. It’s still England.

Rise with the sun, bedeck yourself in florals and spend some time appreciating Mother Nature this solstice. Take as much inspiration as you see fit. Just be as keen as a double texter for the arrival of brighter days and the chance to revel in the light fending off the dark for the next few months. Summer is coming. So let’s go! Because there’s always the possibility that you’ll blink and miss it.

the arrival of British summertime.

Down in Wiltshire, June 21st will start at dawn for the many making a pilgrimage to Stonehenge. The sarsen standing stones hold deep significance to Pagans and Druids alike, as their arrangement frames the sunrise at summer solstice and the sunset at winter solstice. 5000 years after their inception and it’s busier than a Next sale as crowds gather to watch the sun rise to the left of the Heel Stone, with the first rays of the day illuminating the heart of Stonehenge. Whilst I’m not suggesting a mass exodus to Salisbury, why not set those 4am alarms and be ready to greet the day in your favourite place, whether it be the beach or your own backyard. Be the early bird catching the summer

Charlie Smith-Knight welcomes the onset of summer by looking at how we can all have a sensational summer solstice celebration.
