Country Peddler Publisher Every fall, over 55 million children across the U.S. head back to school. We motorists need to be especially vigilant during the morning and afternoon hours when children are walking to and from school and getting on and off the school bus. Over the last decade, about one in four pedestrian fatalities occurred beween 3pm and 6pm. Drivers should slow down and watch out for school-age pedestrians. Children can be easily distracted, especially around other kids. They are smaller and less visible to motorists and may be unable to accurately judge traffic situations because their peripheral vision is 1/3 narrower than an adult’s. In short, kids are not adults--and it’s up to drivers to compensate for these differences and focus solely on the act of driving. Having a heightened sense of awareness around children and following these recommendations will help to keep everyone safe on the road: • Slow down in or near school and residential areas. • Drive cautiously in school zones, around playgrounds, and school buses. • Eliminate distractions. • Reverse responsibly. • Come to a complete stop; don’t roll through stop signs. • Watch for bicycles. • Look for clues, such as crossing guards, which can indicate children could be in the area. • Scan between parked cars. • Practice extra caution in inclement weather.
