Spartan boys basketball competes at Districts By Carole Bettenhausen The boys Varsity team set off to the District Tournament in Colstrip on Feb. 19 with high hopes and determination to extend their post-season play. In their first match up of the tournament, they faced off against Lame Deer and lost to them 39-48. Senior Caleb Ploeger led the Spartans in scoring, finishing the game with 13 points; Caleb also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Senior Jacob Wang was next in scoring with a total of 11 points; Jacob also claimed the honors of most rebounds with a total of 8 for the game. Riley O’Donnell, another Spartan senior, put in 4 points and had 4 rebounds, while fellow senior Trent Collins had 3 points and 4 rebounds. The final Spartan senior, Teight Madler, contributed 3 rebounds to the Spartans’ attempt to defeat Lame Deer. Junior Konner Flint finished with 6 points and sophomore Jaxson Tronstad had 2 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
In the second game of the tournament, the Spartans went up against St. Labre and were able to secure a victory, which earned them the honors of playing for third and fourth place. The Spartans defeated St. Labre 41-31. In this second game of tournaments, Riley O’Donnell claimed the honor of being the high scorer, putting in a total of 13 points along with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Teight Madler was second highest scorer, finishing the game with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Sophomore Garrett Lesh saw a lot of action and scored 6 points for the Spartans and pulled in 6 rebounds. Jaxson Tronstad put in 5 points and had 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Caleb Ploeger finished the game with 4 points and was the tied with for the most rebounds with Jacob Wang; both Caleb and Jacob had 9 rebounds. Jacob also scored 3 points; Caleb had 2 steals and both he and Jacob were credited with 1 assist. While he didn’t score for the Spartans, Trent Collins had 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

In the third game of the tournament, Baker went up against Colstrip; unfortunately, the Spartans were not able to match the momentum of the Colts and fell to them in loser-out action 37-50. Garret Lesh was the high scorer for the Spartans, putting in a total of 10 points; Garrett was also the leading rebounder with 8 for his team. Riley O’Donnell was next in scoring, finishing with 7 points; Riley also contributed 3 assists and 3 rebounds to his team’s attempt to move on to the Divisional tournament. Teight Madler and Jaxson Tronstad each scored 6 points; Teight also had 3 assists, 1 rebound and 1 steal, while Jaxson had 2 rebounds. Scoring 3 Spartan Lady basketball competes at Districts By Carole Bettenhausen The Lady Spartan 2019-20 basketball season came to a too early end for the players, their families, and their fans at the 3-B District Tournament held in Colstrip.
In the first game of the tournament, the Spartans faced Lodge Grass and fell to them with a final score of 45-62. Senior Shelby Moore was the high point scorer for the Spartans in this matchup; Shelby had a total of 10 points along with 1 assist, 1 block, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Senior Macee Hadley was next in scoring, finishing the game with a total of 8 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound and 2 steals. Halle Burdick, another Spartan seBasketball Districts points apiece were Jacob Wang and Logan Graham; Jacob had 3 rebounds while Logan had 1 rebound and 1 assist. Trent Collins rounded out the Spartans’ scoring with 2 points. While he didn’t score, Caleb Ploeger contributed 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
The Spartans finished the 2019-20 season with a 5-16 record and fourth place at District Tournaments. Teight Madler commented, “We gave it all our all and played every game like it was our last and we definitely learned a lot of life’s lessons throughout the season.”

Emily had 3 rebounds and 2 steals, while Rilee had 2 rebounds and Mya had 2 assists and 3 rebounds. While they didn’t score, Ashlyn Lutts had 1 rebound while Harlee Graham had 1 assist, 1 rebound and 3 steals.
This loss to Lodge Grass put the Spartans in a loser out game with St. Labre, which the Spartans lost 34-62. Halle Burdick claimed high point honors for the Ladies, finishing the fame with 11 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Peyton Janeway followed Halle in scoring; Peyton put in 7 points and had 1 assist, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Shelby Moore scored 5 points and had 1 steal. Scoring 3 points each were Anika Ploeger, Alex Williams and Mya Hadley. Anika also had 2 assists and 1 rebound; Alex had 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Harlee Graham scored 2 points for the Lady Spartans and had 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Ashlyn Lutts contributed 2 rebounds and 1 steal, while Sophia Dulin and Rilee Pettersen each had 2 rebounds and McKenna Griffith had 1 rebound.
