Prepare Your Wooden Structures: Purchase or make your own houses out of scrap wood. Start by sanding the wooden structures lightly to create a smooth surface. If you like the texture of the rougher wood, you can keep it as-is!

Choose Your Winter Palette: Select your winter colors – Look to our winter colors for a great guide! Think of serene blues, soft grays, and warm whites. These colors will form the base of your village, creating a calming and inviting winter atmosphere.

Apply Base Colors and Layers: Begin by applying the base color to your wooden structures. Depending on the size of your small homes, our Artist Brushes are a great choice as they have a range of sizes and shapes.

A Perfect Craft for Kids: How to Make Cornstarch Ornaments In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the process of making customized cornstarch ornaments.

These ornaments are perfect for decorating your Christmas tree or as personalized gifts for your loved ones.

Supplies Needed: 1 cup Corn Starch, 1 cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons Canola oil 1 cup water, Optional: 5 to 10 drops of your favourite essential oil, try cinnamon for a lovely holiday scent Equipment Cookie sheets, cookie cutters, textured rolling pin, cookie stamps, or anything you can press into the dough to create texture. To complete your ornaments, decorate with paint, glitter and/or a Clear Coat, ribbon or string. Food dehydrator for faster drying, but not necessary.

Mix Ingredients: Combine all ingredients in a pot over medium heat, stir constantly with a wooden spoon. Mixture will begin to bubble and then quickly turn into a dough resembling mashed potatoes, about 4 to 5 minutes.

Create Ornaments: Roll out to ¼“ thick using a rolling pin.

Add texture at this point, or begin cutting out shapes with cookie cutters. Place on a cookie sheet and allow to dry at room temperature overnight.

Kneading the Dough: Remove from heat and turn out onto counter. Once cool enough to handle, knead dough until it is smooth and pliable.

If it is slightly sticky you can dust with a bit of cornstarch while kneading.

Let the Ornaments Dry: Flip over to dry the other side a second night. If you have a food dehydrator that also works to dry faster, use on lowest temperature setting and dry for approximately 2 hours. Make sure ornaments are completely dry before painting.

Place the cleaned pinecones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a single layer. Bake the pinecones in the oven for 1 hour. The low heat helps to kill any remaining insects and larvae.

Paint the Pinecones: Using a variety of winter colors, paint the pinecones individually.

Start with a base coat and let it dry completely. Apply a second coat if needed for a more vibrant color. Let the pinecones dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Prepare the Wreath Base: If you’re using a Styrofoam wreath, you can leave it as is or wrap it with ribbon for a polished look. If you’re using a wire frame, consider painting it in a coordinating color to blend with the pinecones.
