“Lo” Sessions calls it “one of my biggest highlights … it was so inspiring to connect with other women in the industry and hear their stories.” Ahead of last month’s event, we asked some of the industry leaders chosen to be “mentors” to keep track of the questions they were asked most often and the advice they shared.
iHeartCountry Dir./Programming & Brand Strategy and WNOE/New Orleans PD Casey Carter says of the experience, “It was great to see eager, young college women wanting a career in radio.” Audacy/Houston VP/Programming Melissa Chase says there was a lot of feedback “about how approachable so many of the women are now, and how people felt comfortable asking their ‘scary’ questions without feeling judged. It was cool.”
KFRG/Riverside PD Heather Froglear notes, “It’s been so fun to watch this breakfast grow since Brook Stephens, Jen Shaffer and I created it in 2016. I remember in the mid ’90s being terrified to go speak with all the men Brand Managers because it was intimidating, so I’m grateful that there’s something for the girls today.” She says this year’s event attracted “a great group of women.” Most wanted to know her career history and how she “got from point A to B in radio.”

Charlie has a longstanding passion for the countdown format. “It has always been a fever dream of mine to do a countdown show,” he says. “I listened to Casey Kasem riding to and from church with my parents, and got my start in radio running Bob Kingsley’s countdown off of records.” Although his early influences were steeped in the classic countdown tradition, his current favorite is the VJ Big 40 Countdown on SiriusXM’s 80s On 8 channel. He wondered, “Is it possible to take the same concept and apply it to country, capitalizing on how nostalgic people are for ‘90s and ‘00s country music?”
Recognizing Petty is both a country music fan and a Charlotte local, as well as already hosting a NASCAR show on PRN, the network pitched him the collaborative opportunity. Petty recalls, “They knew in the deep dark recesses of my past I harbored a dream of being a country music star.” Prior to launching the show, the trio met over chips and salsa; the chemistry (or the bottomless chips) kept them there until they were kicked out after two-and-a-half hours.
Their show features a countdown of the top 20 songs for a specific week and year, interwoven with stories and pop culture insights from that period. While many of the songs have withstood the test of time, others have not fared quite as well. “We’ve looked at particular weeks in a particular year and, honestly, God bless them,” says Charlie. “But if I were to go through the top 20 songs right now, I could point out eight that we won’t be playing in two months. That’s just the nature of music.” Debbie adds, “You have to lean into it and find a way to make it entertaining, and that’s where Kyle comes in.”
Debbie continues, “He is just an amazing storyteller, so we find relatable little things that make sense with the music we’re playing and that time in history.” Their discussions often include personal anecdotes – from Chris Stapleton playing at Petty’s daughter’s wedding reception to how many presidents his father, Richard Petty, met, culminating in a story about his sister throwing up in the rose garden while they waited for President Reagan. “Those are the kinds of priceless things that come out in casual conversation with Kyle Petty each week,” Charlie says, to which Petty adds, “I never know what’s going to come out of my mouth.”
Listener feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “I haven’t gotten this
much feedback on Twitter since I wrecked Dale Junior,” jokes Petty. After a 40year career in radio, Charlie describes the show as “one of the most enjoyable projects” he’s ever done, adding, “It just feels different than anything else, like friends just hanging out for a couple of hours.” –Caitlin DeForest

radio?’ We talked about jumping on any opportunity that comes along early on and about the catch 22 of it all – you’ll have a tough time finding a job without experience, but you can’t truly get experience without having a job.” She advised those seeking advice to “get every bit of experience that you can get at first, even if it’s not 100% what you want to do, because those experiences will help lead you to a job that’s the right fit for you.”
Audacy Regional Brand Mgr. and WUSN/Chicago PD Marci Braun calls this year’s event “one of the most attended breakfasts I’d seen in a while,” joking that the free mimosas may have been a draw. “I was asked for tips on on-air delivery and how to sound more conversational,” Braun says. And like Froglear, she adds, “There was a lot of sharing of stories on career trajectories and how that led us to where we are now.”
At Chase’s table, topics included company culture and what defines success. “I got asked about what it was like working for one of the biggest radio companies, and my response was about how your local experience is more important” than the company, she says. “Your day-to-day coworkers, market managers, sales managers and PDs are far more important because they set your daily culture. For a couple of people looking for new opportunities, we brainstormed how they can [investigate culture] before agreeing to move across the country for a new gig.” Additionally, she says, “We had a lot of discussions about finding the role that makes you happy –

not about being in a certain size market.”
WHKO/Dayton PD Nancy Wilson was “really blown away” by the number of women who took part in the breakfast early on a Friday morning, noting, “It was nice to talk with up-and-coming programmers from smaller markets who want to know how to handle it all.” Other topics at Wilson’s table included how to keep things local at a station with no real staff and how to make music decisions without a research budget.
On the “local” topic, Wilson advised attendees with a largely out of market, voice tracked staff that, “No matter where their folks are, assign them a local town, and educate them on local schools, stores, streets, venues and happenings in the area. I have sent my out-of-towners local college
gear so they can wear it on social media. Being local takes some work. Every morning, I send out a daily prep sheet to the jocks letting them know what’s going on – school stuff, weather and business openings/closings.”
As for the research question, Wilson told attendees, “We pay close attention to what listeners request or vote on our app (they rarely call in anymore), and have weekly music meetings with a good cross-section of our target audience. I ask them what their kids like and what songs the kids sing over and over. Record labels will cram streaming numbers down your face. I suggest using those as guides, especially to look for trends. But since we can’t know who is actually doing the streaming, it can only be a guide. Don’t hesitate to ask the record labels for numbers near you. I ask about Cincinnati, Indy, Akron and Columbus. I also suggested they look into having a ‘club’ made up of 10 P1s. Bring them to the station and do an abbreviated old school music test to see what they’re liking.”
WFMS/Indianapolis PD Brooks O’Brian recalls that several people at her table “said they can’t help being worried if their pursuit of a radio career is smart since they’re worried about the volatility of the industry.” She was also asked about striking a balance between work and mental health, advising an attendee who was “wearing many hats in her job” that, “It’s important to watch out for yourself and to speak up when you’ve reached the point where you don’t have the bandwidth to take on more. And check in on due dates. If everything is due tomorrow and that’s simply not possible, can the due dates be moved forward? Ask questions and always get clarification. Supervisors and coworkers can’t help you if they don’t know.”
O’Brian also suggested taking advantage of any mental health services offered through your company. “Never feel bad for using those tools; they are there for a reason,” she says. “If you don’t feel comfortable with that, there are lots of other options out there in the form of apps and help lines. It’s easy to make radio your life; parts of it are fun. But you have to carve out ‘you time.’”

Valory’s Mackenzie Carpenter shares the stories behind tracks from her full-length debut, Hey Country Queen: I wrote “Gone Fishing” with Mia Mantia and SJ McDonald, and it all started with this title I’d been sitting on for a while. I wanted to create my own version of a female rage country song, because all the “Country Queens” before me had one. When I came up with “Gone Fishing,” I thought it was such an unexpected phrase — it’s the kind of thing you’d see on a shop door and not think twice about. But I loved how it could have this clever twist, like “he’s off and not coming back.” I pitched it in a few writing rooms, but not everyone was on board. When I brought it to Mia and SJ, they totally got the vibe and were all in. I’m so glad it turned out the way it did … it really captured the energy I was going for, and I couldn’t be happier with how it came together.
Writing “Dozen Red Flags” was such a fun experience. I co-wrote it with Brandon Hood and Nicolle Galyon on Nicolle’s back deck, and I came in with this hilarious meme I’d seen of a guy on his knees holding a bouquet of red flags for a girl. The moment I saw it, I knew it had to be a song. We dove right in, but the challenge was figuring out how to blend a dozen red flags with a dozen red roses. It took some work, but I feel like we found the perfect mix of fun and relatability. We went through a list of all these red flags but ended with “but man, he was cute,” because let’s face it, that’s where we all get caught up. Writing it was so much fun, and it’s definitely become one of my favorite tracks on the album.
The day that I wrote “I Wish You Would” (f/Midland) with Jonathan Hutcherson, Jamie Moore and Chris Tompkins, we initially struggled to get to a starting place for what we were going to write that day. I came back from a break, and Jamie threw out the idea of what would become the chorus (“I wish, I wish, I wish you would”). Chris picked up his acoustic guitar and started playing a throwback “Islands In The Stream” kind of melody, and we were off to the races. From that point, we probably wrote the song in less than 30 minutes. A cool tidbit is that what you hear on the final track is actually my original vocal from the demo recorded on the day we wrote the song.
I wrote “Country Queen” with Jessie Jo Dillon and Ben Johnson, and I like to call it a “cousin song” to my track “Don’t Mess With Exes.” Essentially, the song is a piece of advice that I’ve both been told and have given about the importance of knowing your worth and not dimming your light or changing yourself for anyone or anything. It ended up inspiring the title of the album, and I love that it closes out the project and leaves listeners with that message.
