After years of promoting artists from behind the microphone, several Country radio veterans are now doing so from the other side of the desk, having left radio careers behind to launch and operate their own Nashville area-based artist management firms.
Among those who have made the move is former Forever Dir./Programming and WXCY/ Wilmington, DE OM/PD/afternoon host Brad Austin, who formed Forward Music Management in 2019 with his initial client, Average Joes Entertainment artist Sam Grow (CAT 9/26/19).
After departing SiriusXM two years ago, J.R. Schumann launched The Schumann Group, which includes country artist Angie K among its clients. Most recently, longtime morning host Kris Rochester – best known as half of the Tony & Kris show – formed Run The Roost (RTR) Entertainment (CAT 8/30), with flagship client Styles, the first artist signed to Keith Gale and Jake Owen’s Good Company Entertainment Records (CAT 8/22).
Austin’s move was inspired as much by what he viewed as the “winds of change” in radio as by his belief in Grow, who first suggested the idea. Initially hesitant, he told Grow he didn’t know anything about artist management, but Grow assured him he understood the industry “from the other side of the table,” and already knew the key players. Austin’s learning curve came more on the music creation side of things: interacting with studios, musicians, publishers and songwriters who he didn’t have as much of a connection to while in radio.
As a PD, Austin loved to take chances on new artists and songs, and ultimately decided taking a “leap of faith” into a new career would keep him connected to the things he was most passionate about. “One thing I thought I’d miss about radio is the direct connect with the fans, and getting them excited about new music,” he says. “But I still have that, and in a bit more direct way.”

Following the release of the September Nielsen PPM monthlies, Country Aircheck has analyzed Q3 numbers to determine the stations with leading shares and cumes in drivetimes. Quarterly averages eliminate the wobbles that can be present at a daypart level on a month-to-month basis. All figures are Persons 6+.
Mornings: The Q Morning Show with Andy “Riggs” Riggle, Katelyn Maida and Erica Rico gives KKBQ/Houston the largest wakeup cume, with 258,000. With an increase of 15,900, KSCS/Dallas’ Hawkeye In The Morning jumps from fourth to second with 251,800, pushing WUSN/Chicago’s Melissa & Austin to third with cume of exactly a quarter of a million.
In terms of share, the Wakeup Call with Zuko & Kayla on WCOL/ Columbus leads for the sixth consecutive quarter with a 10.0. Below them, a reset of almost the entire top 10, as only two other stations make repeat appearances from Q2. A 5.7 to 7.1 jump

This One’s For The Girls: WUBL/Atlanta’s Guitars For The Girls raises money for Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer. Pictured (back, l-r) are RCA’s Ali Young, iHeart’s Rod Phillips, RCA’s Chris Young, Records Nashville’s George Birge, MCA’s Kassi Ashton Strada and Angie Ward, SawGod/Columbia/Nashville Harbor ’ s Ella Langley, Nashville Harbor ’ s Ryan Dokke and the station Maher; (front, l-r) the station’s Mishelle Rivera, Nashville Harbor ’ s Liz Santana, Records Nashville’s Jamice Jennings Kristen Gates and MCA’s Shannon Hogan
lands KYGO/Denver’s Tracy & Fizz in second place, while a 4.8 to 6.6 jump puts WUBE/Cincinnati in third place tie. The Big Dave Show was on WUBE for most of the quarter, though it swapped places with afternoon hosts Jesse Tack and Anna Marie toward the end of the period. Also with a 6.6 is WSIX/Nashville’s airing of The Bobby Bones Show Afternoons: WUSN’s Scotty Kay remains in the lead with 401,400 listeners. KKBQ’s The Lo Show with Lauren “Lo” Sessions moves from third to second, swapping places with KPLX/Dallas’ Jason Pullman Except for that swap and KSCS and KILT/Houston trading places at fourth and fifth, the entire top 10 remains identical to Q2.
For the first time since Q2/2022, WCTK/Providence ’s Kevin Lawrence has the largest share in afternoon drive, thanks to an 8.3 to 8.8 rise which moves him from fourth to first. That snaps a seven-quarter
winning streak for WCOL’s The Boxer Show with Brandon “Boxer” Nasby , which slips to a second place tie with WSOC/Charlotte ’s Charlie & Debbie . See the 2024 Q2 leaders here ; Q1 here ; 2023 Q4 here ; and Q3 here . – Chris Huff
The Grand Ole Opry’s centennial will be marked with a yearlong rollout of events branded as Opry 100, including the venerable radio show’s first ever overseas show.
Nashville media got a preview of 2025 plans during an Oct. 11 “first look” press conference
held on the stage of the Opry House in Nashville, bookended by performances by 32-year Opry member Marty Stuart and avid Opry supporters Chapel Hart. Opry SVP/Exec. Producer Dan Rogers detailed plans kicking off Jan. 3 and leading up to the Nov. 28 anniversary. He promised a year “filled with fun, excitement, incredible performances and lots of Opry moments.” Among the highlights:
• The Opry will be staging more shows in 2025 than during any year since its 1925 debut: more than 230, sometimes offered up to seven nights a week. Every show is aimed at “celebrating the past, present and future of country music,” Rogers said. Opry 100 begins Jan. 3 with a show featuring the Opry’s longest-tenured member, “Whispering Bill” Anderson. Tickets for most 2025 shows go on sale Oct. 18.
• One hundred artists will make their Opry debuts in 2025, beginning Jan. 18 with Shaboozey.
• In what Rogers called “an historic first,” next fall the Opry will host its only show outside the U.S. at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with performers to be announced. Said Rogers, “The global appeal of country music, the Opry and Nashville has never been stronger.”
• A new Opry 100 Honors show series will be introduced to pay tribute to legends including Patsy Cline, George Jones, Minnie Pearl, Bill Monroe and others, with the Opry mining audio and video from its archives to augment these programs.
• Also in the works: new microphone stands, replacing ones with a
design Rogers said hasn’t been changed in more than five decades; a book, 100 Years Of Grand Ole Opry, authored by Nashville journalist Craig Shelburne due April 15, and featuring interviews with more than 60 artists; a children’s book, Howdy! Welcome To The Grand Ole Opry, coming in the fall; calendars, and a line of Opry 100 merchandise and home goods available in January. A Target-only edition of Shelburne’s book will include bonus content.
• Fan-voting for an “Opry 100 Greatest Songs” contest will be launched soon, and each of the selected songs will be recognized at an Opry show during the year.
• A monthlong Opry 100 Party of the Century will happen in October 2025, with every show during that month celebrating the birthday. (Ed. Note: And something was said about cupcakes. Stay tuned.)
• The Opry has also commissioned an artist to create a new sculpture to be displayed backstage, plus miniature versions to be gifted to every current member of the Opry cast.
Next year will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Opry Trust Fund, which assists members of the country music community in need. Rogers said there will be “really significant” announcements coming next year regarding the fund, which Chapel Hart member Trea Swindle tearfully told press conference attendees she utilized to treat a mass in her breast. A portion of ticket sales from all of the planned 2025 tribute shows will benefit the fund.

While also acclimating to being on the road two to three weekends a month, Austin says the biggest surprise was discovering that management is “a lot less show business and a lot more desk business. Organization is your best friend as a manager, especially when you’re juggling multiple calendars.” He’s also gained a better understanding that “artists don’t pop off overnight. It’s a series of small, meaningful moves in a dedicated and passionate series” that managers put together on their behalf that move the ball forward. “It’s more of a TSL game,” he says referencing terminology from his previous career. “You want to slowly build that with all of your artists.”
In radio, Austin might find himself standing next to an artist manager like Kerri Edwards in a backstage meet-and-greet for her client, Luke Bryan. “It seems simple,” he says of such events, admitting he now knows “the 17 steps that she had to go through that make that event possible.”
The parts of his radio career Austin thinks best prepared him for management are “understanding the listeners/fans,” and learning to navigate music industry politics. Five years in, he says he’s still learning something new every day. In addition to Grow, Austin works with several other clients, including Matt Freedman and Sam Stinson. He says of choosing acts, “It has to be someone I believe it. This is not just a paycheck for me, and never has been.”
His experience working with unsigned artists and their promoters, publishers and managers at the satcaster gave him a leg up in grasping the management role quickly. Still, he says, “I learn things every day,” particularly what to look for in contracts, and how to structure deals, things he says he got a “crash course” in initially.
Like Austin, Schumann says the volume of travel was an adjustment. “I don’t even know how many nights I’ve spent in hotels or how many airline miles I’ve racked up this year.” Another has been being responsible for the income of multiple people. “You eat what you kill,” he says of the gig. “There is no paycheck every two weeks. And if the artist isn’t making money, nobody’s making money. I’m responsible for that.”
One thing about radio that Schumann says prepared him well for management is the 24/7, non-stop nature of both businesses. “Every hour is a working hour,” he says. Dealing with strong personalities and creative people while in radio also helped prepare him for doing the same in his new life.
While Schumann admits there are things about radio he misses “a lot,” especially hearing a great song and being able to rush it on the air, he says, “I don’t regret the decision” to make a career change. “I wouldn’t go back and do anything differently. I got into radio to be close to the music, and in this job I’m probably even closer and more involved. It’s exciting. It’s terrifying. It’s fun. It’s wild. It’s crazy, mind boggling, mind numbing all rolled into one.”
80% A Manager: Rochester and longtime on-air partner Tony Randall left WIVK/Knoxville in 2022 after nearly five years (CAT 6/28/22), following prior runs at KSON/San Diego, KUSS/San Diego and in national syndication via USRN. Two years before that, Rochester had already begun developing Styles, whom he was introduced to by Rochester’s songwriter wife. Impressed by Styles’ work ethic, Rochester began pitching Styles around town to other managers, all of whom told him “development acts are tough because there’s no money in it.”
When Styles broached the idea of Rochester managing him, the radio veteran found immediate encouragement among the established artist managers he’d been pitching, all of whom came through with guidance to get him started and have continued to serve as a sounding board. Rochester recalls veteran manager Clarence Spalding telling him, “You’re already 80% a manager because you’re willing to admit when you don’t know something and seek out answers.”
Eat What You Kill: Schumann was Sr. Dir./Country Programming at Sirius/XM for nearly seven years until his departure in 2022 ( CAT 6/22/22 ), culminating what was to that point a 17-year career in radio. In addition to Angie K, Schumann’s current clients include alt pop band Nicotine Dolls (his first signing), and pro wrestlers Marshall and Ross Von Erich. He jokes, “Everything you thought was crazy or wild about the music business pales in comparison to professional wrestling.” He calls signing Angie K as a client “a full circle moment for me,” because she was one of his “Highway Finds” in 2019 while at SiriusXM.
Schumann has had the same experience, saying, “I have a great community around me when I run into things I’ve never seen or dealt with.” And Schumann and Rochester both say they’ve relied on each other for support as they have learned the ropes.
Like Austin, Rochester offers what he terms an affordable consulting package for some clients, which currently include country singer Steven Cali and sibling duo Arbo. But he chooses carefully, weeding out the ones who are going to be unhappy about not landing an immediate booking on The Bobby Bones Show. He says the “organization and preparation” skills he learned in radio have been most helpful in his transition into management.
All of the managers say the best way to break into that field is to find a developing act you believe in and think you can really help. “If you can find that person that gets you excited, and you wake up every day thinking about what you can do for them, it’s going to be the easiest transition on the planet,” Austin says. “If you don’t have that, and this is just a job for you and a paycheck, I don’t think you’re going to last very long. You’re not going to have health insurance, a guaranteed paycheck every two weeks or a 401K.”
Still, Austin predicts we’ll see more broadcasters transitioning into management and related fields because radio has become “like musical chairs: every time a song stops, they pull out another seat. There’s a lot of really smart, really good people still left in radio that might – like me – find an opportunity on the other side of the industry. And I say to them, ‘Come on!’” Reach Austin here, Rochester here and Schumann here. –Phyllis Stark CAC

Riley Green Don’t Mind If I Do (Nashville Harbor) Green’s third studio album was announced at the opening of his Duck Blind bar in Nashville and releases on his birthday (10/18). Among the 18 tracks, produced by Dann Huff along with exec. producers Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, are collabs with Ella Langley (“Don’t Mind If I Do”) and Luke Bryan (“Reel Problems”).
Wyatt Flores Welcome To The Plains (Island/Republic)
“It’s an album about home and a search for happiness,” Flores says about his Beau Bedford-produced debut album. “It’s an album about Stillwater, Oklahoma, and all the other little towns that have raised people like you and me. It’s an album about my family, and the people and places in my life who have defined who I am today. This album is happy on one side and heartbreak on the other, and whoever you are, I hope you find something you love in here.”
Ryan Larkins Bones (Red Street)
The project follows his debut EP, 2023’s Meet Ryan Larkins, and features the title track, penned alongside Paul Sikes, and latest release “Home State.”
Breland Project 2024 (Bad Realm/Atlantic)
The six-track project was inspired by Breland’s time in Selma, AL, where his family is from. “On this new project I wanted to honor and acknowledge those ancestors and the name that they carry because it is bigger than me. It has always been. There are so many people that fought for me to do this, and a lot of those stories have been erased. I have the opportunity to share some of those stories of the people that are still here.”
Blanco Brown Back 2 Basics (BBRMG)
“The world can be tough, Back 2 Basics is about the comfort we find in the simplicity of being with the one we love,” says Brown.
