Second verse, same as the first. Déjà vu all over again. Pick your poet –Herman’s Hermits or Yogi – the message remains the same: Big Loud and Morgan Wallen
When we last recapped the year-end races for labels and artists in June, Big Loud and Morgan Wallen dominated. The only thing that has changed is both have widened their leads over their nearest competitors. Big Loud popped an extra percentage point on its leading chart share since June, moving 12.2-13.2%. It extended its lead over second place Broken Bow from 4.3% to 4.8%, an incredible move this far into the chart year. Making Big Loud’s feat even more impressive is that it came as Broken Bow added an extra half point onto its own chart share, increasing 7.9% to 8.4%. The biggest leap since our June recap is Stoney Creek, with a 1.2% bump.
Big Loud and Broken Bow’s chart shares are powered by Wallen and Jelly Roll, respectively, who are also the top two most-heard artists of the year, thus far. To give you an idea of Wallen’s increasing format dominance, he led Jelly Roll by about 700,000 airplay points in June. In just three short months, Wallen’s lead is now more than 1,060,000 airplay points. Nate Smith and Lainey Wilson rank third and fourth in the artist airplay race, but trail Mr. Roll by more than a half million points.
Smith’s “World On Fire” is the most-heard song thus far, leading by more than 170,00 airplay points. That’s followed by Warren Zeiders’ “Pretty Little Poison” and the Jelly Roll/Lainey Wilson collab “Save Me,” which are neck and neck.
Methodology: The 2024 chart year runs Nov. 12, 2023 to Nov. 9, 2024. Airplay points for this update are tabulated through September 21, 2024. One hundred-twenty-four songs have spent at least one week on the current chart in that window and are credited for all current and recurrent airplay. Collaborations are credited to each artist’s label in full – each receives 100% of the airplay points amassed by the song. As always, airplay is from our friends and partners at Mediabase 24/7

As with many awards shows, the Sept. 26 People’s Choice Country Awards at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House provided a series of hit and miss moments for Country radio programmers, who also had quite a lot of thoughts about the prominent inclusion of mgk (the artist formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly) in the mix.
The show did well in the ratings, but didn’t draw the eyes of a lot of Country radio professionals. Nielsen overnight ratings gave the show 3.29 million viewers, according to Programming Insider (CAT 9/27). But of the nearly 50 Country radio pros contacted for this story, half said they hadn’t watched the show – which was on against football and coverage of Hurricane Helene, as well as Thursday night station events in many markets. Beasley VP/Music & Entertainment and WSOC/Charlotte OM John Reynolds thought NBC “barely promoted it.”
JVC Broadcasting Dir./Country Programming Phathead thinks the show got its
(continued on page 4)
winners right. “They hit on all the major stars: Morgan [Wallen], Luke [Combs], Lainey [Wilson], Jelly [Roll], Zach [Bryan], Dan + Shay, Post [Malone], Shaboozey, Dasha. That’s the heat in the Country format right now. All deserving. All huge years,” he says.
Consultant John Shomby calls the show “decent. Nothing that made me jump out of my seat. The major artist award winners were spot on, and I hope the ACMs and CMAs took note of Morgan Wallen’s [four] wins.” Shomby’s favorite performance of the night was Lady A’s cover of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” calling it “totally unexpected, but a familiar tune that really fit the group well.”
But Shomby thinks some of the show’s award categories, like Storyteller Song and Cover Song are “a bit of a stretch. How many covers have become close to hits this past year,” he asks, noting that the show “needs to reflect the genre a bit more in that sense. What makes this show different is that the public picks the winners. That should be enough of a differentiation. No need to create award categories.”
Consultant Joel Raab found the show “entertaining. I like how it saluted the Grand Ole Opry. Parker McCollum rocked it with his new song, and I loved seeing Brad Paisley be so well received. The fan-voted awards seemed spot on except for the Old Dominion cut that I’m not even sure they remembered!” That band won in the Group/Duo Song category for album cut “Different About You,” which WCCQ & WXLC/ Chicago Asst. Content. Dir./MD Drew Walker calls “a monster fan favorite that was never released to radio. Wish it had been.”
Walker thinks “the show moved better than last year’s inaugural awards and had its share of fun, surprise moments. [Host] Shania [Twain’s] outfits were definitely a highlight, as was the standing ovation after the incredible performance from Lady A. Chills on the song and the reaction.” Walker also enjoyed Country Champion Award recipient Kane Brown’s “honesty – and laughing at himself – that he was supposed to say something from his publicist and completely forgot, but then being brutally true and reflective, speaking the words many of us have felt in our own lives.” Similarly, he enjoyed Country Icon Award winner Miranda Lambert noting that her success took “years, tears, beers and Tito’s,” a catchphrase Walker thinks “could go well on a sweatshirt or a tattoo.”
KUZZ/Bakersfield PD Brent Michaels calls the show “a good representation of where the Country format is right now. We know Morgan Wallen is one of the biggest music stars on the planet, but Shaboozey and Dasha winning also shows
Play It Again/Columbia’s Dylan Marlowe goes Off (The Record):
The title track, “Mid-Twenties Crisis,” came to be after praying that God would help me find the title. One night, I woke up at 4am (about a week before the record had to be turned in) and the title “Mid-Twenties Crisis” popped into my head. I ended up writing it and we recorded it just in time. I’m really pumped that it made the record.
I didn’t have a theme when I made this record, but I knew I was digging into my pop-punk roots. I also wanted to make sure there were some good country songs on there where I really focused on the songwriting. We probably worked on this record for the last three or four years and this is the final product of the songs that I’ve been writing for it.
I’ve found the balance between the fun and deeper songs by playing so many shows a year. If I had too many deep songs, the show would be boring, but if I had too many fun songs, the show probably wouldn’t be that dynamic. I wanted to make sure that half of my songs dug into the deeper songwriting, and that the other half were really fun and great to play live.
Usually, I just write songs for me, and I make decisions a few weeks after. I like to live with songs and, if I decide a song isn’t for me, then we’ll pitch it. I never really go in and try to write for somebody else. I just kind of write for me and, if the song finds another home, then that’s how it works out.
I learned from touring with Dan + Shay that the road is supposed to be a fun place. It really matters who you hire because everybody from Dan + Shay themselves to everyone on their crew were just great people and really fun to be around. They’re like family. I hope one day when we have a tour that big, the people opening for us feel the same way we did.
I just hope the fans feel all the hard work we put into the new album. All the late nights that went into recording the vocals and writing the songs. The album is very authentic to me — every song on there is something I’ve been a part of or personally been through. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to the album.
I think the coolest thing that happened was when we were in Jones Beach and a fan had just gotten back from [deployment] like two days before the show. He said that listening to the music helped him get through being overseas, so that was really cool to see.
“Deer On The Wall” was inspired by a real argument with my wife about hanging deer on the wall. I obviously won that argument because, if you go to our house, there’s still a deer on the wall, and I’m proud of that!
“Mid-Twenties Crisis” is a true story. I was going through some mental health stuff last year, and I think that was great for me to put into a song. Writing the song helped me heal, and I hope the song helps other people to heal too.
how country has really infiltrated other genres, not to mention Machine Gun Kelly winning for crossover. It’s definitely not the ACMs or CMAs, but it’s always great to have a showcase for country music available to watch on a mass scale.”
Highlights for Michaels also included Brown’s acceptance speech.
“Taking the time to use it to inspire others to give back is classic Kane Brown. I also loved Elaina Smith as the voice. She does such a great job at these award shows and is a great representative for Country radio.”
KUPL/Portland MD Danny Dwyer was “disappointed” by the show. “The production felt off, and the intro of Shania just got lost.”
Like Michaels, a highlight for Dwyer was seeing Brown “recognized for his hard work and giving back as a great humanitarian. That production piece was spot-on and incredible.” And, like Walker, his favorite performance came from Lady A, which Dwyer says, “gave me goosebumps. Their harmonies are just sick.”
While he appreciates “any mass media outlet or TV show that presents country music in a positive way to a wider audience,” Music Choice Dir./Country Programming Jim Murphy thinks the PCCA show “hasn’t yet found its lane in the country awards world” and doesn’t yet “have a look that makes it unique.” His highlights include seeing Paisley “debuting new music after a too-long hiatus and lighting up the crowd,” and Keith Urban “showing us again why he is one of music’s top entertainers of all time, all genres.” Murphy also appreciated “all the winners who acknowledged Country radio and their record labels, as both have important roles to play in building careers.”
While he liked seeing both Dasha and Shaboozey recognized with awards, Murphy was disappointed that neither artist got to perform, predicting, “the ratings would have benefited from those moments.”
The most remarked-on show participant was mgk, who not only had the night’s closing performance, but also won two awards. WGKX/Memphis PD Kay Manley wondered, “Why was Machine Gun Kelly there?” While Dwyer says, “I love that we are integrating others into the forrmat, [but] I would have loved to see Old Dominion, Dan + Shay or Cody Johnson perform instead of mgk. That was a terrible ending to the show. They need to do better.”
But for Raab, “It was touching when Kelly got to say hi to his idol, Shania Twain.” That moment was a highlight for Walker as well. And Murphy loved mgk’s acceptance speech, which he called “especially heartfelt.”
Far from the Opry House, some New England programmers were attending Jelly Roll’s show at Boston’s TD Garden that night, including WOKQ/Portsmouth,
NH Brand Mgr. Ginny Brophey. Because Mr. Roll was nominated in several categories – including one he won with mgk (Crossover Song) – he set up a TV in his backstage lounge for radio guests to watch. Brophey shares, “Jelly sent mgk a video of all of us in the radio room watching the TV while he was being interviewed on the red carpet. Then Jelly tried to FaceTime mgk. He didn’t pick up, but it was a cool moment backstage.”

Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on holding “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma” at No. 1. Thirteen of Combs’ 19 No. 1s have now been multi-week chart toppers, giving him 37 total weeks atop the chart. Among artists with 15 or more No. 1s, 68% of his have been multi-week, placing him second all-time behind Kenny Rogers, who had 70% of his No. 1s spend multiple weeks at the top. Songwriters are Jessi Alexander, Jonathan Singleton and Combs.
Kudos to Andy Flick and the Warner/WMN crew promotion team on scoring 109 adds for “I’m Gonna Love You” by Cody Johnson with Carrie Underwood. It is Johnson’s third time to lead the CA/MB Add Board and now his largest add week.

Wallen Leads The Way: Big Loud’s double-digit chart share and Wallen’s massive airplay lead is driven by a quintet of hits in the year-todate Top 100 – “Thinkin’ ‘Bout Me” (4), “Cowgirls” with Ernest (13), “Man Made A Bar” with Eric Church (33), “Everything I Love” (52) and the current single, “Lies, Lies, Lies” (75). Big Loud’s Top 100 haul also includes Hardy’s “Truck Bed” (7), Ashley Cooke’s “Your Place” (26) and Miranda Lambert’s “Wranglers” (87). Contributing heavily is a bevy of Post Malone collabs, including “I Had Some Help” (Wallen, 12) “Pour Me A Drink” (Blake Shelton, 64) and “Guy For That” (Luke Combs, 110).
Broken Bow’s runner-up spot is fueled by the Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson’s “Save Me” (3), Dustin Lynch’s collab with Jelly Roll, “Chevrolet” (14), Lynch’s solo “Stars Like Confetti” (42), Jason Aldean’s “Let Your Boys Be Country” (32) and Wilson’s “Wild Flowers And Wild Horses” (35) and “Hang Tight Honey” (56).

Nate Smith California Gold (RCA)
Smith’s 16-track sophomore album includes previously released track “Wish I Never Felt,” collaborations with Avril Lavigne (“Can You Die From A Broken Heart”) and Alesso (“I Like It”), as well as multi-week No. 1 “Bulletproof.”
Tucker Wetmore Waves On A Sunset (Back Blocks/EMI Nashville)
“In a lot of ways, this feels like my introduction to the world, so I wanted to share some sides of me y’all haven’t seen yet,” Wetmore says of his eight-track debut album, which features five new songs. “These songs have been mine for a while, but I can’t wait to make them ours.”
Little Big Town The Christmas Record (Capitol)
Produced by Dave Cobb, the group’s first Christmas album features originals, like “Glow” and “Holiday,” and classics, including “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Tennessee Christmas.”
Conner Smith The Storyteller (Valory)
“I think for better or worse, my natural state as a songwriter is thinking deeply on big picture themes and the captivating power of stories,” shares Smith. “It’s amazing to think about how stories can really move people and I’ve always been fascinated with how to do that through music, ever since I was a little kid writing songs. The Storyteller feels like a rare creative moment that I wanted to capture by telling stories in a cool way.”
Tim Dugger Stars Over Alabama (Curb)
The 13-track project gives nods to Dugger’s musical heroes, like Hank Williams Jr. (“Do It Like Hank”) and Merle Haggard (“Mama Tried”).
