Family Tradition: Meet The Medeks

In an unusual dynamic for radio, the morning personalities behind Audacy’s WGGY/Wilkes-Barre, PA The Doc Show aren’t just on-air partners, they’re father and son. Ken “Doc” Medek and Sean “Chewy” Medek teamed up almost two years ago (CAT 8/17/22), and are starting to see the fruits of their labor with both local and national award show recognition.

Growing up, Chewy says, “My favorite day was ‘bring your kid to work day,’” both because he got to spend time in a radio station with his dad, and because the day always ended with a trip to McDonald’s. “I grew up going to station events,” Chewy says. “I always loved being around it. The radio station we’re in right now is the station I grew up in until Doc left to go to Philly.”

Doc was WGGY’s PD/morning host for 11 years until he departed for a six-year morning show stint at WXTU/Philadelphia, living in that city during the week, and commuting back to his family in Wilkes-Barre on the weekends. He returned to mornings at WGGY in 2016 (CAT 4/8/16).

Chewy joined his dad on the air at WGGY in 2022, arriving from the PD/afternoon post at Seven Mountains Top 40 WPQP & WQQP/DuBois, PA (CAT 8/17/22). Prior to joining WPQP & WQQP in 2021, he spent two years in afternoons at Top 40 WBHV/State College, PA.

Child’s Play: One childhood moment that helped solidify his decision to follow his father’s footsteps into a radio career came when Chewy was called out by his sixth-grade teacher for being the class clown. He recalls the teacher telling him he’ll never get paid for being “immature,” and clapping back, “On the contrary, my dad gets paid to be immature every single day.”

Chewy was 14 when Doc purchased WAZL-AM/Hazelton, PA (CAT 11/8/12). And while station ownership was a short-lived endeavor for Doc, the Classic Hits station provided a training ground for Chewy, who notes that he was “horrible … the absolute worst” on the air while learning the ropes as a young teen.

Now, Chewy adds, “Every single day I get to wake up and work with my hero, and somebody who taught me everything I know in the industry.

Q2 CDM Drivetime Leaders

Following the analysis of the format’s Q2 drive-time leaders in PPM markets last month, Country Aircheck has also compiled Country’s top performers for the quarter from Nielsen’s 44 Continuous Diary Measurement (CDM) markets.

For the second consecutive quarter, WIVK/Knoxville leads both drivetimes. Morning hosts Joey Tack and Nancy Barger retain their lead

WIVK’s Ted “Gunner” Ousley , who retired following the Spring book after 28 years with the station, went out with a bang, jumping 1.2 shares to a 12.4 to close out his career at the top. It’s an even bigger

Wagner and Greg “Styckman” Owens remain in third with a 10.9. It should be noted that WRNS/Greenville, NC , which placed 8 th in mornings and 4 th in afternoons in Q1, no longer shows as Nielsen ceased measuring that market. Previous results here: Q1 ; Q4 2023 and Q3 2023 – Chris Huff

OFF THE RECORD

The Reklaws’ Jenna and Stuart Walker go Off (The Record):

We have been fans of country music ever since we moved to a farm at ages six and eight. It became the soundtrack to our lives. The themes and subjects these songs are written about, and just the feeling that a country song gives you, inspires us to the core. We loved The Chicks, Johnny Cash, FGL and so many more … each of these artists have helped us to form our sound.

There have been years of competitive sibling rivalries, but there has been so many more years of working together and getting through the ups and downs of this career. It has been really special to have someone so close to home be there through it all. From the writing room to the stage, it has been an amazing journey to be able to say we did it together.

I think the main thing we’ve learned on America’s Got Talent is that timing is everything We could have said we were ready for something like this five years ago ... but I don’t know if that would be the truth. Doors and opportunities open up when they are supposed to, so we feel honored to be on this journey right now. No matter what happens, we couldn’t be more blessed to have gotten the opportunity to sing a song that is so important to us on a stage that size. Hopefully “People Don’t Talk About” has helped others like it’s helped us.

The outreach of fans from all over the world telling their story has been mind-blowing. Sometimes telling your story can put you in a vulnerable position, but it has been absolutely beautiful to see so many people reach out and thank us. On top of this, we also want the world to see how much fun we can be, and this will be our focus for what is next. Yes, we have been through something so deep, but life has fun moments too.

We owe our career to Canadian country music. They have supported us from the getgo, and for that we are so thankful. Country fans are the best fans. Doesn’t matter what country you’re in, the country crowd can’t be beat. Us Canadians love a good time (and beer) and there is no better place to enjoy a cold one than at a country show.

The US country scene has been a goal of ours since we were little kids on the farm. Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to play at some amazing US festivals. We’ve also had the opportunity to collab with some amazing US country artists like Drake Milligan and Jake Owen. We spend more than half our year in Nashville when we’re not on the road playing shows north of the border. There is such an incredible community of talented musicians and songwriters down here, which naturally forces us to continue working on our craft and get better every day. There is no town we’d rather live in, and we’re looking forward to what’s to come.

“People Don’t Talk About,” even though we put it out two years ago, continues to surprise us. It has a bigger job to do than just be a song. We also love “Long Live the Night.” This one is a few years old now, but each time we play it live, we still get shivers at how the crowd sings it back. Then, this new three pack [“If I Drink Enough,” “All the Time” and “One Beer Away”] is just a taste of the next season of The Reklaws. A Jenna song, a Stu song and a song we both sing on ... this is something we have been wanting to do for a long time now and it’s exciting to see it all coming together.

Family Tradition: Meet The Medeks

(continued from page 1)

It’s the coolest thing. And we’re having a little bit of success. We’re having fun.”

That success includes 2023 and 2024 Pennsylvania Assn. of Broadcasters Awards wins for Outstanding Local Radio Team. This past spring, they received citations in the state capitol for their charity work, and won their first ACM Award for Medium Market Personality, with WGGY also winning an ACM for Medium Market Station. Then last week, they were nominated for an NAB Marconi Award in the same category.

Winning the ACM and going to Texas to accept it was “the coolest thing in the world,” Chewy says. “I always wanted to win an award – not for bragging rights, but just to have somebody else say, ‘What you’re doing is good.’” With the addition of the Marconi nomination, he says, “We’re getting nationally recognized for what we’re doing, which is having fun. This is what radio should be.”

The younger Medek thrives on the recognition. “Whether it’s an award, or just someone telling us it’s good – my boss or a listener – makes us so happy. It means we’re doing something right. It’s so cool to see what having fun can do.”

Now well over 40 years into his radio career, Doc remains fascinated with the job. “I never got bored with it,” he says, but adds that partnering with his now 27-year-old son brought “a whole different energy” to the show that remotivated him.

As two of only three local personalities at WGGY (afternoon host Crockett being the other), Chewy says, “We’re always trying to find larger than life ideas. We’re trying to make radio like it was in the ’80s and ’90s.” Adds Doc, “Where it was fun to listen to. You got up and looked forward to listening. There’s obviously a lot of work involved, but we try not to let listeners see that.”

“We’re trying to bring that old school radio feel and make people have fun,” Chewy adds. “I just want to make people smile and forget that we live in a crazy world.”

In conversation, Chewy alternates between calling his father “Doc” and “Dad,” and says their on-air dynamic is a mixture of partner and parent. “Doc is my best friend and my dad, so people get to see a different side of a father/son relationship,” he says. “They know we’re best friends, father and son, and on-air partners. It all kind of combines into the perfect little mesh. And I think listeners enjoy that it’s not just all hokey, fun family stuff. There’s also some serious things that we get into here.”

Doc adds, “There’s a lot of busting chops back and forth.” But he says that makes them relatable. “A lot of listeners are parents, and they’ll tell us, ‘What happens to you guys goes on in our house too.’”

Doc says their familial relationship helps the show’s dynamic. “I’ll get on

him about something that happened on the air, or he’ll get on me. Normally in that situation, whenever I worked anywhere else, all of a sudden that person [who was critiqued] would shut down for the rest of the show. But we put on our big boy pants and we’re fine. We’re ready to go.” Adds Chewy,

“We both know we’re coming from the point of view of helping the show.”

That’s not to say they don’t have pet peeves about each other. Doc jokes that he “has to buy lunch every day, because very rarely does Chewy offer.” And Chewy complains about how loud his father crunches his daily apple in their shared office. But neither would trade it for the world.

Doc says his favorite part of his job now is “having the opportunity to work with my son.” Agrees Chewy, “Every day I get to be with my dad. These are memories that will last the rest of my life. Someday, when Doc retires and I have a new co-host, it will be very hard to top this experience.” Reach Doc here and Chewy here. –Phyllis Stark
