Big Loud,Wallen, Zimmerman Top ’23

To the surprise of exactly no one who listened to any radio at all this year, Morgan Wallen is 2023’s top airplay artist. His six top 15 singles, three No. 1s, six weeks at the chart pinnacle and three of the top 10 songs of the year powered Big Loud to the Label of the Year crown. A deeper look at the airplay totals, however, reveals a less obvious but no less momentous story. The No. 1 song of 2023 – Bailey Zimmerman’s “Rock And A Hard Place” – begins to tell the tale. Only his second single to date, that song joined “Religiously” (No. 35) and “Fall In Love” (No. 47) in putting Zimmerman at No. 4 on the top airplay performers list. Above him at No. Morgan Wallen 3, Lainey Wilson. Her “Heart Like A Truck” (No. 9), “Watermelon Moonshine” (No. 39) and Hardy collab “Wait In The Truck” (No. 23) put her in the top 10 performers for the first time. In fact, Zimmerman and Wilson are joined by Jordan Davis, Tyler Hubbard and Jelly Roll in breaking into the top 10. Beyond the five artists making their top 10 debut, Wallen only cracked the top 10 for the first time in 2020, while Kane Brown (2018) and Luke Combs (2017) are also relatively new airplay stalwarts. Bailey Zimmerman For 2023, it’s only Thomas Rhett and Jason Aldean checking in as long-tenured radio staples. (continued on page 6)

RADIOTHON ROUNDUP Country radio showed its power this past week, as dozens of stations aired their annual radiothons, the vast majority benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Across the 52 stations for which Country Aircheck collected results, more than $14 million was raised. Radiothons are demanding, require long hours and can be emotionally draining, but the list (pg. 5) is proof positive that all the effort is worth it. Country Aircheck salutes all those involved.

How Brenda Lee Rocked To The Top

All Cindy Mabe wanted for Christmas was for Brenda Lee to beat out Mariah Carey ... and Santa delivered early. Lee’s holiday staple “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the last two weeks, 65 years after its release – finally exceeding Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” And it was all part of a plan the UMG/Nashville Chair/ CEO set in motion a year ago. [Ed. Note: Today (12/11) is also Cindy Mabe Brenda Lee Lee’s birthday!]

St. No Mountain High Enough: The KSON/San Diego crew helps raise more than $290,000 for St. Jude. “Last year we actually overtook Mariah in audio streams,” Mabe says. “But when you added in video, Mariah was still No. 1. Looking at it from a catalog standpoint, I’m like, ‘We are leaning in and taking it this year. We’re going to give this woman her flowers while she’s here, and letting her celebrate with us.’” Mabe met with Lee in February. “She didn’t really know how big the song was. I told her we really need to do something special this year. I pitched her on a few things and she was just glad to have the conversation. She’s been retired for a while, but I asked if she’d do some performances. And to be honest, she’s been like a 21-year-old kid wanting to do everything we’ve put in front of her.” Crucial to the operation was Lee’s first-ever music video, featuring cameos by Trisha Yearwood and Tanya Tucker. Social media content was upgraded, as well. “Before we even entered into this, the fans had kind of gotten ahold of the idea, ‘This is neck-and-neck. Who’s the queen of Christmas? Grandmother deserves this.’ That’s how they refer to her. ‘Grandmother.’ Another batch of people refer to themselves as the ‘Brendanators.’” Lee made an appearance on TalkShopLive, performed on NBC’s Christmas at the Opry and at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s All For The Hall – her first performance at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

Part of Mabe’s mission was education, starting with her team. “We had Brenda talk to the staff and [journalist/historian] Robert Oermann walk them through her career. My kids needed to understand how important she is. Brenda Lee had The Beatles open for her and had them make a tape so she could tell the label to sign them. The label passed. She was with Elvis at the Opry the first time. She was Taylor Swift before Taylor Swift.” Lee was 13 when the song was released. “Brenda’s dad died when she was eight years old and, at 10 years old, she was the breadwinner for the family,” Mabe says. “In a sense, she never had a childhood – Christmas was when she went to work and made all her money. But when you look in her eyes, there’s a little kid in there – she just comes to life.” When Mabe delivered the news of the accomplishment to Lee (watch here), Little Miss Dynamite was moved. She recalled songwriter Johnny Marks and others who contributed to the track. “All these years,” Lee said through tears. “Mr. Marks would be proud ... Owen Bradley and the A Team. The Anita Kerr singers.” On a more humorous side, Jimmy Fallon opened one of his monologues last week with the No. 1 news. “The team went really hard after it – synchs, socials – everything we could find to push the song through,” Mabe says. “We made sure everyone knew this was the 65th anniversary and it had never gone No. 1. Brenda

Georgia Line as just the fourth artist to launch with three consecutive No. 1s, of which two are multi-week. Songwriters are David Ray and DeFord. Kudos to Ryan Dokke and the BMLGR crew on leading the final CA/MB Add Board of 2023 with 82 adds for Lady A’s “Love You Back.” It is their 16th Add Board leader and first in more than two years. Additionally, WIBW/Topeka has been removed from the Activator Chart panel due to recurring technical issues, while similar issues keep KSNI/Santa Maria, CA off the panel for another week.

News & Notes

She Is The Music, a global nonprofit working to increase women in music, has teamed with EngineEars to launch MixHer, a Dolby Atmos training and certification program for female-identifying audio engineers. McCreery the week of Dec. 18 and Jelly Roll the week of Dec. 25. Benztown affiliate sales team member Tim McDonald is retiring at the end of the year after a 40-year career. He has been with Benztown since 2019 after previous stops at Westwood One, RPMC, Transmedia, Jones Radio Networks and Grooveworx. Mickey Guyton’s “Heaven Down Here” inspired a Hallmark Christmas movie of the same name, which premieres Dec. 14. The movie stars Phylicia Rashad, Tina Lifford and Richard Harmon.

Big Loud,Wallen, Zimmerman Top ’23 (continued from page 1) Speaking of Combs, the No. 2 overall artist of 2023 also led a strong showing for country in other formats. His version of “Fast Car” is the No. 13 overall song at AC and Hot AC. The aforementioned Mr. Roll had the No. 2 song at Active Rock with “Need A Favor,” and Wallen’s “Last Night” landed at No. 18 for the year at Top 40. As for Big Loud, rising to the top of airplay chart share in only its eighth year of operation is perhaps another indicator of a sea change in country music. “This wasn’t just a promotion team goal,” says SVP/Promotion Stacy Blythe. “This was a company goal from the writers in the other building to Joey [Moi]’s studio to this whole Lainey Wilson building. With our processes and our people – everything and everyone contributed to this – we’re all that hungry.” Measured by our friends and partners at Mediabase, those airplay successes helped country music to its highest recorded music market share in seven years – 8.5%. Meanwhile, Nielsen PPM share for the format rose from last year’s worst-ever 6.0 to 6.4. Year-end music, top stories, a preview of 2024 label priorities and The Stacy Blythe Interview with Jason Aldean are featured in the December print edition of Country Aircheck. –Chuck Aly
