Radio & Records: A Family Tradition

People whose career paths were inspired and/or influenced by family members working in the country music industry share their experiences with Country Aircheck:

• iHeartMedia’s Tay Hamilton and father, National Radio Hall of Famer Sean ”Hollywood” Hamilton:

TH: My first understanding of what my dad did was when he let me sit in the producer’s room to watch him and his co-hosts do their thing through the big glass window.

SH: It was always a great show when Taylor hung out in the studio. One of the “bits” we had her do when she was a little girl was to have her read the weather. It was fun to hear Taylor try to pronounce “accuweather winter storm warning.”

TH:  In my early twenties I decided I wanted to give radio a try. My dad was over the moon and called Chris Pickett, the PD in Vegas at the time, to see if I could tour the iHeart studios. After begging Pickett to let me sit-in with the morning show, he finally caved for one show. I showed up every morning after that to learn how the board worked. After a few months, they offered me Saturday nights on-air and I worked my way up from there.

Drew Baldridge In A Family Way

Artist-funded record labels aren’t unheard of, but Drew Baldridge’s Lyric Ridge (CAT 8/4) might be a product of country music’s new streamingforward era. With a promotion team hired and first single “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” impacting this week, Baldridge is all-in on radio and relationships.

“We had this song take off in the last year-and-ahalf to the point where it’s got more than 100 million streams, and I would go into meetings with labels where it just wasn’t happening,” Baldridge says.

Drew Baldridge Tay To Play: The Hamiltons, then and now.

“But as I was playing fairs and festivals this summer, people were screaming every word. I thought, ‘I don’t want to look back in 20 years and say I didn’t try.’” The concept was not without precedent. His “Senior Year,” released in 2019, received airplay despite the absence of label support. “That was just me calling radio friends, and they started playing it,” he says.

Baldridge’s radio relationships were key in making the leap. “I called [Audacy’s] Tim Roberts first. ‘Am I freaking crazy? Talk me off this ledge.’ He said I wasn’t crazy and that I’d be leaving airplay on the table if I don’t do it.”

At the same time, airplay has deeper meaning.

“I love DSPs, but I don’t hear artists bragging about getting a song on Spotify,” Baldridge says.

“No, they’re cheering when they get a song on the radio. I have so many friends signed to label deals who’ve never gotten that chance. I could sit back and collect this streaming money, but 13-year-old me writing songs in my bedroom always wanted to be on the radio, and I still believe in that.”

Putting the team together – Louie Newman, Bill Heltemes, Steve Pleshe, Megan Youngblood and Chele Fassig – took a village. “I got [label vet] Royce Risser on the phone, who connected me with Lou,” Baldridge says. “[WYCT/Pensacola’s] Brent Lane, [WOKQ/Portsmouth, NH’s] Ginny Brophey and [WSSL/Greenville, SC’s] Kix Layton all texted me about Chele. I got several messages from people about Megan Youngblood, and Bill Heltemes and I worked together for years. Bill told me I was the only person he’d consider coming out of retirement for.”

On the job only a few weeks, Newman is already impressed. “I heard Drew’s relationships with radio were good, but wow,” he says. “As a promotion guy, it makes my life so much easier. This model is very refreshing because in working for a big corporation for 30 years, I now get to focus on the music without being hindered by the next HR meeting someone is making me attend.”

Adds Fassig, “I met Drew on the radio side in 2018 and was impressed with him right off the bat. The accessibility and innovation he’s bringing spoke to me. Plus the consumption numbers are just mind-blowing. They reinforce that you have to look at everything when deciding on music.”

While he’s not giving himself a VP/Promotion title, Baldridge is at the center of the conversation. “We do calls every Monday, go down the list and talk about who the targets are for each rep,” he says. “I’ve been blessed to be doing this long enough that I’ve played a show for almost all of the 157 stations. So, yeah, I know almost everybody. And then the question is, how can we be a better partner to each of them than a major? We get answers to stations in seconds. The request comes in, I look at the

calendar and we book it.”

Quantifying success and the ultimate goal may be relative to how deeply personal the endeavor is for Baldridge. “I’ve never had a song in the top 40 before,” he says. “My dream has always been to hear my song on the countdown. If I do, I’ll cry. That will be a big moment, but we’ll still be pushing it up the hill. And if we do well, I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t do it with another song.

“I’m funding this with the streaming from this song and my catalog,” he continues. “If radio is playing it, that’s only going to go up, so we’ll keep building this team. Maybe a partner wants to come alongside, or there’s a spot for a VP. I’m open to all of it, but right now it’s no stone unturned with this song.”

Putting his name on the line, literally, puts Baldridge in an uncommon role for an artist. “There’s no investor and it’s not play money,” he says. “There can be discomfort at radio when dealing directly with an artist, because they don’t want to hurt feelings. But I’ve heard ‘no’ a million times in Nashville. You’re not hurting my feelings if you don’t think the song is going to work. If you’ll come to the show and see the response –give it a chance, that’s great. But shoot me straight. Tell me how I can be the best possible artist partner for you, and I’ll do it. This is literally my family business and you won’t find anyone more focused than we are.”

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord), Carson James, Shelley Hargis, Scotty O’Brien, Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek promotion team on holding “Need A Favor” at No. 1 for a third week. Songwriters are Rob Ragosta, Joe Ragosta, Austin Nivarel and DeFord.

Kudos to Kevin Herring and the Triple Tigers promotion team on scoring 120 adds for “Cab In A Solo” by Scotty McCreery. This is just his second time to top the CA/MB Add Board and his first time to do so on Triple Tigers. This is also the largest add week ever for the label.

As programmers – as well as the industry and fans – wrestle with whether Oliver Anthony ’s “Rich Men North Of Richmond” is moment or budding musical movement, the song remains far from charting. Eight stations have double-digit spins: WGH/Norfolk (38), KMLE/Phoenix (34), KWJJ/Portland (19), WPAW/ Greensboro (16), KKWF/Seattle (16), KBAY/San Jose (10) and WOLF/Syracuse (10). Also adding the song are KSON/San Diego and WUSY/Chattanooga . Six of the eight adding the song this week are Audacy stations.

Radio & Records: A Family Tradition

(continued from page 1)

SH: Outside of advice, I never pushed my influence to achieve her progression. She did it all on her own. Taylor’s incredibly talented, and I’m so proud of her.

TH: The first advice he ever gave me was “be prepared to work harder than most,” because some are going to look at me as just the daughter of “Hollywood Hamilton.”

However, he always assured me I was going to make a name for myself. He also taught to not let anyone walk all over me or take advantage of my work ethic.

One thing that will always stick with me is seeing how connected my dad was with his listeners. They would talk to him as if they’ve known him forever. I learned early in my career that’s what I wanted – to build connections and a sense of community with listeners.

• BBRMG Coord./Promotions Regan Donato and father, Forever WGTY/York, PA PD Scott Donato:

SD: Regan spent a good bit of time at concerts, events and even on-

air. She and her younger sister (Camden) starred in multiple parody music videos over the years – some featuring the actual artist from the song. I couldn’t even count how many artist/rep dinners Regan has been to with me. She would typically sit quietly, forced to listen to me reel off my Jim Carey act time and time again. I’m happy to know that she learned a lot about her own hopes and dreams during those moments while also discovering that her father is out of his mind!

RD: My sister and I would spend our days off of elementary school waking up at four in the morning, being on-air, telling funny stories and giving the news or weather. We’d often sleep on the office floor in the afternoon while he would work.

SD: Regan was always interested in not only the music itself, but

Mic, Check: Regan and Scott Donato.

the process behind the life of each song. And furthermore, the behind-thescenes interplay between the radio and records side of the business. By the time she reached high school, she actually became a great resource for me, as downloads, streaming, and TikTok started to have a greater impact.

RD: When I started high school, I began thinking about my career aspirations. I’d ask regionals what their day-to-day looked like, just out of curiosity. Being able to understand the promotion department of a record label is much easier when you have seen the radio side firsthand. I have so many memories of being in the backseat of the car while my dad was on the phone with reps, saying yes or no to adds, conversions or shows. I understood what a regional’s job was before I entered a record label, and I’m grateful for that.

SD: This is a relationship business. My advice has been to make connections, work hard, don’t get caught up in drama and be respectful. But, at the same time, don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard.

RD: The best advice he gave me was to make connections with everyone in the room.

• Red Light’s Autumn House and father, National Radio Hall of Famer Gerry House:

GH: Autumn grew up in the music business. I watched her stay calm and move on when things got rough. After college she returned to Nashville and interned for the late great Stan Moress. One of her first assignments was to pick up Donna Summer at the airport. She was an early Uber.

AH: As a kid, my dad would play me records that he played on his show. He would say, “This guy is a star.” We would listen together, and talk about the lyrics and the star factor. When Larry Willoughby hired me in A&R, I knew I had to find a star. Not just a pretty girl that can sing like a bird or a handsome guy that used to barrel race. It had to be a person with that undeniable “it” factor. Luckily, I’ve found a few of those.

GH: On-air I talked about Autumn all the time. She had name recognition but earned her way up through the ranks on her own.

AH: When you’re a teenager and people tell you that “your father is so

House Party: Autumn (r) with Gerry, mother Allyson and her two children. ©2023 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. Sign up free at

funny,” you don’t really get it. My parents may not know this story, but once I was pulled over for speeding. I was so nervous. The officer looked at my license and said, “Is your daddy Gerry House?” I said, “Yes, sir.” He let out a big laugh and said, “Your daddy is so funny! I listen to him every morning! Now slow down.” That day, I was really happy my dad was funny.

GH: Over the years, it went from her being Gerry House’s daughter to me becoming Autumn House’s father. As a songwriter, I hired two ladies for $1000 a month to pitch my songs. Six months later I went to their office to let them know their communication skills were bad to say the least. One of them said, “Before you fire us, we have an appointment in the morning with Autumn House!” Six grand and they had no idea they were going to meet with my own daughter.

AH: We’ve always been close, but I didn’t realize just how funny – and smart – he was until I got older. –Caitlin DeForest, Sarah Skates

AUGUST 25

Tim McGraw Standing Room Only (Big Machine)

Produced by McGraw and Byron Gallimore, his 17th studio album features 13 new tracks, including the first single and title track. “As an artist, I always want to dig deeper and get better every time I make a new record – it’s a big part of what drives me, and I really believe this is one of the best projects we’ve made,” he says. “I’ve been working on this album since 2020, and this collection of songs are some of the most emotional, thought-provoking and life-affirming music I’ve ever recorded.”

Morgan Wade Psychopath (Sony Music Nashville)

Wade worked with songwriters Ashley Monroe, Julia Michaels, Angaleena Presley, The Love Junkies (Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Liz Rose), Butch Walker and more for the first time on her Sadler Vadenproduced, 13-track sophomore album.

Turnpike Troubadours A Cat In The Rain (Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers)

Produced by Shooter Jennings and recorded at Muscle Shoals’ Fame Recording Studios and Dave’s Room in Los Angeles, the ten new songs mark a return for the band following their self-imposed hiatus in 2019.

Craig Campbell The Lost Files: Exhibit B (Grindstone) Campbell unearthed another 17 songs for the continuation of Exhibit A , 12 of which he co-penned alongside writers including Blake Bollinger, Kenton Bryant, Rodney Clawson, Josh Dunn, Styles Haury, James Kelly, Wyatt McCubbin, James McNair, Lance Miller, Phil O’Donnell, Houston Phillips, Taylor Phillips, Dave Turnbull and Brad and Brett Warren.
