Radio Reacts To CRS 50

In some ways, attending CRS is like going back to school. In addition to the education/extracurriculars combo, there’s often more going on than one person can take in. Because it is impossible to see and do everything, Country Aircheck asked a cross section of CRS 2019 participants to share their experiences. WRTB/Rockford, IL’s Joe Pitt: “This was my second CRS; I was a 2017 Rusty Walker Scholarship winner. This year, I really enjoyed the panel on metrics. As an MD with total control of music selection, it was beneficial to see how all those newer media [data points] – YouTube, Spotify, Shazam – can help shape my playlist to be more active and less reactive with music changes or adds. Musically, Garth [Brooks] was my favorite moment. Hands down. I could have [stayed] another two hours just listening to him talk and share Joe Pitt stories. Clay Hunnicutt’s Time Management session was also helpful, and I was grateful for his ‘white at night’ [email clearing] suggestion. That panel helped me realize my errors, and I started doing it right away! I spent time before leaving Nashville cleaning out my inbox.” WFYR/Peoria, IL’s Kristin Monica: “I had a great time during my very first CRS as a Rusty Walker Scholarship winner! I learned so much and took tons of notes. The mentoring breakfasts [were] an excellent opportunity to talk with people one-on-one. If I had to choose a favorite panel – I really liked them all – but it would probably be a tie between ‘What Leadership Looks Like in 2020’ and ‘The Art of the Artist Visit,’ because it was very inspiring to hear Kristin Monica from women executives in the business in one and you got to see what it looks like from all sides of an artist visit in the other. We don’t get a lot of artist visits, because we’re a small market, but it was really helpful for when we do get artists in the studio.” (continued on page 8)

Friends In Whoa Places: Hot Country Knights open for Capitol’s Dierks Bentley at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Friday (2/22). Pictured (l-r) are Dan Hochhalter as “Vinnie ‘Frenzy Fingers’ Pompanelli,” Tim Sergent as “Barry Van Ricky,” Steve Misamore as “Dillard ‘Monte’ Montgomery,” Bentley as “Big Rhythm Doug,” Jordan Bentley as “Lil Doug,” Sawyer Brown’s Mark Miller, Ben Helson as “Marty Ray Rowburn,” Cassady Feasby as “Trevor Travis” and Valory’s Thomas Rhett as “Cousin Daryle.”

Entercom All-In On NYC Country

“I found out at CRS like everyone else did.” That’s Entercom Country Format Captain and WYCD/Detroit PD Tim Roberts. The scene was opening ceremonies of CRS 2019 (2/13), which were barely underway when breaking news hit telling of a multi-station swap that has Cumulus giving Country WNSH/New York to Entercom. “That was absolutely one of the more exciting news bulletins I’ve ever received,” Roberts continues. “Having a New York Country station in the company is great for Entercom and for Tim Roberts the format.”

Page 3 Peeked My Interest: Warner Bros./WAR’s Chris Janson gives a sneak peek of new music to radio and streaming partners during CRS. Pictured (back, l-r) the label’s Chad Schultz, Apple’s Jay Liepis, iHeart’s Rod Philips, KRTY/San Jose’s Nate Deaton, the label’s Tim Foisset and Kristen Williams, KKGO/ Los Angeles’ Michael Levine, Spotify’s Laura Ohls and John Marks, the label’s James Marsh, WKLB/Boston’s David Corey and KMLE/Phoenix’s Tim Richards; (front, l-r) the label’s Tom Martens, Red Light’s Tom Lord, the label’s Ben Kline, Apple’s Madison Hanten, YouTube’s Rachel Whitney, the label’s Cris Lacy, Janson, KJM Management’s Kelly Janson, Spotify’s Brittany Schaffer and YouTube’s Margaret Hart and Erin Duvall.

Of course, the immediate question for many was about Entercom’s intentions for the station. Would it stay Country? “That was immediately communicated to me,” Roberts says. “We were definitely staying with the format and, if anyone asked, it was important to make sure it was known we’re staying Country. We already have an incredibly strong Country programming group, and this makes it even stronger.” Entercom’s format portfolio now numbers 20 stations, with two in the top five markets, three in the top 10, nine in the top 20 and a total of 14 in PPM markets. Some changes are inevitable, others have yet to be assessed. “We are working on some studio consolidation,” Roberts says. “WNSH will be joining us at our New York broadcast facility at some point.” As for audience-facing changes, WNSH was of course the flagship of Cumulus’ Nash brand. The station is still using the “Nash” moniker on air and online. “We have to take a look at the research, the brand strength and ascertain what’s going on,” Roberts says. “Nothing has been determined. We’re still getting to know [PD] John Foxx and the staff. We have to figure out the systems [integration], too. It’s just like any time a big acquisition is made. “I talked to John that day or the next,” Roberts continues. “He’s so well respected and is going to be a great part of the programming team. And our market manager in New York, Susan Larkin, has had Country stations in her portfolio before, so it’s an experienced group there. They just put Kelly Ford in mornings and had their first St. Jude radiothon last week. Exciting things are happening.” More than anything, Roberts sees opportunity. “There’s room for more collaboration between New York and Nashville, ex-

MY TUNES: Travis Denning Mercury’s Travis Denning discusses his most influential music: 1. The Allman Brothers Band: They had the artistry, the mystique, the legacy, the culture and of course, the songs. I’m the guitar player I am today because of Duane. They are the pinnacle of all my influences as a musician. (More here.) 2. AC/DC’s “Shoot To Thrill”: If I could ever Travis Denning capture the magic that song has and stretch it out into a 75-minute set, it would the best live show ever. Angus Young showed me that if you want to be a rock star, you have to unapologetically be you onstage. 3. The Raconteurs, Atlanta, 2011: I have never seen a purer example of rock ‘n’ roll than Jack White and Brendan Benson fronting that show. It was the loudest powerhouse set list I’ve ever witnessed. I was at a weird place in life, wondering if I needed to stick with college or move to Nashville. That night decided for me. Sorry Mom, blame Jack White. 4. Jason Aldean’s My Kinda Party: I felt like someone was telling my stories. “My Kinda Party” was my weekends. “I Ain’t Ready To Quit” was a moment I faced in my first love. “Tattoos On This Town” was Warner Robins, GA. “See You When I See You” was my buddy Jake Johnson who passed too soon. That album really struck deep. 5. George Strait: He’s cut a lifetime of some of the most meaningful country songs. “Run,” “A Better Rain,” “I Can Still Make Cheyenne,” “Troubadour,” “You Look So Good In Love.” I’m in awe that he has never strayed from who he is. (More here.) • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’ve never really listened to Khalid. I’m usually a good six months late to new stuff. • “Important” music you just don’t get: The Beatles. I just wasn’t raised on it. They do nothing for me. I respect the hell out of them, though. • An album you listened to incessantly: Halsey’s Badlands. Most of my friends know I’m a super fan. That record is a masterpiece with great songs and insane production. (And he met her.) • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott, because it’s an absolute jam for all occasions. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I am 100% shameless about the music I love. That being said ... maybe cranking Christina Perri’s “Human” isn’t the manliest thing in the world.

Chart Chat

Congrats to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the Capitol promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1 with “What Makes You Country.” The song is the fourth chart-topper from the album by the same name. Writers are Dallas Davidson, Ashley Gorley and Bryan. And kudos to Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow reps on securing 39 adds for Jason Aldean’s “Rearview Town,” topping this week’s board.

A Joe-Brainer: RCA’s Ryan Hurd with radio friends and label staffers before his show at Joe’s Bar in Chicago.

Radio Reacts To CRS 50 (continued from page 1) KXKT/Omaha’s Erik Johnson: “I really enjoyed the ‘Voice & Talent Coaching Workshop’ with Marice Tobias. She had fantastic tips, tricks and tactics to make your reads stronger. I can put that to use at my radio station immediately, and I wish that session were another hour or two longer. The overall experience this year was great. Sessions were solid, and I liked that we hit the Erik Johnson ground running on Wednesday rather than wading into it with some throwaway sessions. Returning to the station, we will tighten up our promotions department with a specific game plan using the ideas I learned in the ‘Turning The Remotes of Yesterday in to the Remotes of Today’ and ‘Digital & Social Media Boot Camp’ panels.” KXXK/Aberdeen, WA’s Philip Luce: “This was my first CRS. I enjoyed the panel for small market PDs and hearing how other small market PDs wearing many hats balance their time. It’s always great to pick up new skills when it comes to time management. I also enjoyed the artist interview with Jason Aldean; hearing how he overcame obstacles on his way to superstardom was very inspiring. Seeing Tim McGraw at the New Philip Luce Faces show was pretty huge, and the Garth Brooks one-man show at the Bridgestone Arena was epic!” WIVK/Knoxville’s Nikki Thomas: “’The Metrics That Matter’ and ‘Understanding Parents, Teens and Country Music’ were both pretty informative. As a person who loves music and research in general, it was interNikki Thomas esting to see how consumption in the market relates to demand and what that looks like these days for radio. I loved the focus on young listener cultivation, too; it’s so important. As far as the performances, I really love the UMG Luncheon every year. I’ve decided that Royce Risser has missed his calling

and should have been in stand-up. I don’t know who writes for him, but the material is solid year after year.” WKHX/Atlanta’s Scott Gaines: “There were so many great musical moments that it would be hard to pick just one. The lunches were incredible, Garth was impressive, and Keith Urban in a suite was ... pretty sweet! Scott Gaines See what I did there?” The Big Time With Whitney Allen’s Dana Swearingen: “I really enjoyed The Hidden Demo panel. Very eye-opening to hear about the latest trends with the younger demo and what we can do in radio to cultivate future listeners. I also appreciated the React & Recover panel. I Dana know it wasn’t easy to relive the events that Swearingen happened, but I think the speakers did an excellent job talking about their experiences. Attendees had great questions on how to move forward in programming after disasters. Also, I went to the UMG suite with Caylee Hammack, and holy shit-balls, I was blown away by her talent!” KAJA/San Antonio’s Bree Wagner: “I loved the addition of the Warner Luncheon this year and being able to see their roster – as I do with UMG and Big Machine – in one place. I was also super impressed by the new group on Triple Tigers, Gone West.” WSIX/Nashville’s Amy Paige: “This Bree Wagner was my first time at CRS as an attendee. I really loved the Garth Brooks and Amazon Music panel, because I enjoyed his perspective on the importance of buying albums and supporting songwriters, and I appreciated how he encouraged the relationship between streaming and radio. I also enjoyed the Edison Research panel, because it helped me understand how audio is being consumed and how relationships are changing.” Amy Paige –Monta Vaden CAC
