As Radio Contracts, Syndication Surges

Consolidation, debt load, competing platforms and a pandemic have compounded into furloughs and permanent personnel cutbacks at radio. Arguably, the last several months aren’t as much a cataclysmic transformation as a greatly accelerated evolution. Amid the decline, there does seem to be at least one major growth area – syndication. Country Aircheck spoke with several with new and growing shows in the space for thoughts on the shift and resulting opportunities. “The pandemic has definitely sped things up, as there’s economic pressure everywhere,” says United Stations’ Andy Denemark, whose daypart show Backstage Country is Andy already holding down nights for Beasley Denemark stations. “Network radio has been growing in lots of different ways, and it’s all about resources, meaning that we provide resources that local stations need. Country has more stations in America than any other format – almost 2200 – so it has more room for more players, hence all the shows you are seeing.” Danno Wolkoff, COO of Sun Broadcast Group (formerly Envision) agrees syndication is expanding in many areas, including longDanno Wolkoff form weekend and daypart shows, 24-7 formats and voice-tracking. And while some of the growth is pandemic-related, he believes the need for stations to operate more efficiently has been steadily increasing, leading to the creation of new business models and opportunities for many out of work. “Personality On Demand is a new growth opportunity for us that came directly out of COVID-19 when stations started to send everyone home,” Wolkoff says. “We heard from operators who said things like, ‘I have an afternoon show on furlough’ or ‘We’re not set up to work remotely. Can you help us out?’ We saw the need for stations to have plug-and-play options, so we became like a clearinghouse for talented people who were let go and stations that needed help.” (continued on page 14)

Q&A: Records President Ash Bowers Tapped to head the newly formed Nashville division of Barry Weiss’ Records (Breaking News), Ash Bowers has seen the country business from multiple vantage points – artist, publisher, manager, producer and now label chief. The Wide Open Music co-founder spoke with Country Aircheck about his path and the plan. CA: How did you meet Barry Weiss? AB: I cut an EP on Matt Stell to get him a record deal, but I couldn’t get anybody to bite. I got a call from Steve Williams, my partner Ash Bowers in the management and publishing business, who told me his wife watches Chrisley Knows Best and we should try to put Savannah Chrisley in the “Prayed For

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Monument/ Arista’s Teddy Robb: The biggest change is that we aren’t on the road every day. Or any day, really. It’s strange being home on the weekends. Most days start with coffee and guitar in the morning. I like to ease into the day playing music and getting ready to be back on the road. I try to get in a hike and a workout … that has really kept me sane since March. Late in the morning, I usually have a write — which used to be exclusively on Zoom — but more and more I’ve been getting back into face-to-face writes. I have really missed that personal interaction. I round out the workday with some sort of online time — a radio Zoom meeting or an Instagram Live. Those are some of the only ways we’ve been able to connect with people. I wonder what this quarantine would have been like without the virtual outlets … or Call of Duty. I wouldn’t say Call of Duty is new, but my buddies and I haven’t played in years. When quarantine hit, we all put on headsets and picked up where we left off. It’s funny — everyone is a grown-up with real jobs, but as soon as the game starts, it’s like we’re right back in high school. That’s actually been one

of the best things to come out of COVID-19: reconnecting with some of my childhood friends. Quarantine has both hindered and enhanced my ability to be creative. At first, virtual writes were new and had some advantages over face-to-face. Specifically, the mute button let me tune out and work on a melody or lyric while my co-writers continued with another part of the song. Ultimately, I’d rather write in person. You just can’t beat that connection. The ability to go live on social media has helped keep that connection with fans. I’m ready to play shows in person! There’s nothing like real, live music. There’s a ton that I have in the queue (Yellowstone, for one), but I’ve been spending my time getting ready for live music to come back. That’s why I moved to Nashville, and I can’t wait to get back on that stage. I’ve been trying to eat as healthy as I can, but I’m a sucker for a good cheeseburger. Maybe that’s not a snack to most people, but I have a pretty big appetite! Having live music taken away from us has made me appreciate it that much more. Being

You” video. When we released it July 9, 2018, I was on vacation with my family and got a call from Barry. I wasn’t sure who he was, so he gave me a two-minute history lesson – Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, Jive Records. He said he was watching “Prayed For You” explode on YouTube and rise to No. 33 all-genre on iTunes and called it a “huge copyright.” Matt and I flew up a few weeks later, and that’s where the working relationship really started. He called me a few months back thinking it was time to open a shop in Nashville. I said, “Sure, I’m in.”

Heaven On Dirt able to get on stage and entertain people is such a privilege. I’ll never take it for granted.

You’ve hired Andy Elliott and Jamice Jennings for promotion. Why now, and what’s the plan? Not having our own staff left us at the mercy of everyone else in town. [Consultant] Keith Gale has obviously been a good partner on Matt and in developing radio strategy with Chris Bandi. We thought if we added Andy to what Jamice was doing with Keith, we can go directly to radio and build the staff as we grow. Records is partnered with Sony, so distribution is through Columbia/New York. And Barry’s New York staff is amazing with marketing and analytics.

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of KSOP, Inc. KSOP/ Salt Lake City PD/morning co-host Deb Turpin: I’m kind of a homebody anyway, but I am not in the office all day like I used to be. Previously, I was there from 5:45am until 4pm or 6pm each day. Now, we do the morning show live in studio, and then I head home to finish the day remotely. I am usually finished, for the most part, sometime in the afternoon, which has allowed for more bike rides, dog walks, catching up with friends, listening to new music and television or streaming. It’s just me and my three dogs, and I am glad for the extra time with them. Scout is my new adoption, and she has been a challenge, so it’s good to be home with them. I love her, though ... no matter how many vacuum cords, pillowcases, comforters, stairs or collars she chews up, she is here to stay. I bought an e-bike, which I didn’t see coming. I was never a fan of biking. [CRB Exec. Dir.] RJ [Curtis] would tell me this isn’t really a bike, but it’s as good as it gets for me! I have been riding every day. I know the “real bikers” shake their heads when I track my trips on Strava. They need an e-bike category! With fewer office interruptions, I have more time to think about planning ahead and coming up with new ways to excite our audience. Our show is the same; that part hasn’t changed. We have been in the studio every day, and we are live and unscripted and have watched

the pandemic evolve politically into “sides.” We try to relate to what everybody is dealing with while avoiding preaching, taking sides or fighting. I binged Tiger King, but that seems like forever ago! I found Selling Sunset and loved it, so I was glad to see when season three was released. I’ve been on a Fleetwood Mac binge lately and have been watching some of their live shows and biographies. I’m really into documentaries! I started Vikings and am late to the party. I also love HGTV and Home Town, as well as any crime documentary or drama that comes along. And, I’ve been following the Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell case and watching those hearings. What a bizarre case! I’ve gotten pretty obsessed with Frito Lay’s Munchies Cheese Fix and Diet Dr Pepper with True Lime packets. That’s pretty standard fare every day. In some ways, I have loved having some down time. As an example, I have worked every July 4 since 1988, so this year it was nice to just hang out for the holiday. I spent that day at a friend’s pool with some fireworks of our own. I’ve also had more time free during other holiday weekends, too. I love radio and am so grateful to get to do what I do, but radio can be hectic, and it has been nice to have a bit of a breather as far as events and weekends are concerned. I know some are going crazy from the lack of events, but for me it has been nice. The city is putting a road in where my house is, and I just found that out as coronavirus hit. I raised the kids here, and it was hard to deal

What will your focus be? Finding new talent, artist development, and coordinating with promotion and New York. I’m not going to pretend I know everything, but I was able to spot guys like Jimmie Allen and Matt, who were beating bushes in town for years without anyone paying attention. Working the “Moneyball” angle and looking for outliers is what I’ve been good at. We built a management and publishing company that way. It’s about finding and placing the right bets.

turpin-time with. It was a case of eminent domain, but they were good to work with, and I have a beautiful new half-acre lot and am building a new house. I never saw that coming, and it’s nice to do it with some down time allowing me to focus on everything that goes into building. The sewer line went in today. Woot! Discuss the merits of road bikes versus e-bikes with Turpin here.

How do you view this unique career trajectory you’ve been on? I was pretty good at failing. As an artist, I came here in ‘07 and got a record deal lightning fast. I was the first artist with a new team and felt like a guinea pig. After a few singles failed, I just wanted out. I was jaded, the passion had been sucked right out of me and I was planning to become a police officer. But I was commuting back and forth to write and connected with Steve

Williams, who had a publishing company and said he’d love to keep something going with me. I felt I’d spent my entire time in Nashville listening to everybody else and never going with my gut. I told Steve I was in if I could do it the way that makes sense to me. He said, “Free reign.” We built a profitable publishing company. Through that we found Jimmie, who I had no intention of managing. I also had no intention of producing, but he’d never even done a demo session. In helping him through that, I was in the producer role. Same with Matt. I put it all to the Lord’s favor that I keep falling into these things. Will you stay involved with Wide Open? Yes, I’ll continue in management for Jimmie and Matt. I never would have taken on this role with Records without being sure we could have the management covered. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with a great team. They don’t need me, but they will get me whether they want me or not. I will continue to be deeply involved. Meanwhile, I’m so honored to be a part of what Barry’s doing here in Nashville. –Chuck Aly

As Radio Contracts, Syndication Surges

(continued from page 1) Motivations driving programmers to bring in syndication are varied, according to Denemark. “Sometimes the need is economic and sometimes it’s convenience,” he says. “And sometimes, it’s that we have exclusive talent or content. We love bringing star power to radio. That started with Dick Clark as a co-founder of our company, and that’s where the Backstage Country concept of artists as guest hosts came from.”

Talent Fo Sho: For personalities, reimagining what a career in radio might look like may have been coming either way. “A lot of what is happening now would have happened eventually,” explains the namesake of SBG’s Sam Alex Show. “The pandemic is speeding everything up, so there’s more of an immediate need.” Alex is one of many air talents featured in the Sam Alex new book Go Syndicate Yourself! by syndicated personality Randy “R Dub!” Williams. The tome hails syndication as “a pathway toward expanding your broadcast career and as a backup to protect its very existence.” To that end, the mindset for personalities may need to shift toward running their own shop. “I’ve always considered myself more of an entrepreneur than just an employee,” says Alex. After leaving Townsquare’s Taste of Country Nights, he was encouraged by several musician friends to start and own his own show. “They would say, ‘Hey, even though we are represented by a record label, we are entrepreneurs and our own boss.’” Looking at his career as a brand and small business led him to realize those aren’t platform specific. Hence Alex’s broadcasting camp, television work and new book. Brand Knew: Those extensions can even be across dayparts. Not only is Silverfish Media Dir./Programming Carsen the cohost for Big D & Bubba, she’s also the host of syndicated midday show Country With Carsen. “We’re used to syndication in other dayparts, so it’s a matter of expounding the benefits of a live midday jock who is there to talk to listeners and be there with breaking news,” she says. “It might take a few discussions to get through to a PD that I’m really there live and not tracked a few days ahead.” Once the brand is established – with owners and listeners – living up to it is key. “To an Carsen audience, it’s the one-to-one interaction,” Carsen says. “Creating relationships on the air, then taking it to socials, then utilizing socials to interact with other people who might not have been P1s but had interests in common. Then bringing that content back to the air, keeping it circular and moving.” Late last month, Bryan “B Dub” Washington expanded his B-Dub Radio Saturday Night to weeknights with Skyview Networks. That’s in addition to his afternoon drive show on KNUC/Seattle. “B-Dub Radio will have the same energy and quality I deliver every weekday in Seattle,” he says. “It has to be major market sounding, or there’s no point in doing it in the first place,” he says. Local support is also key. “Syndication works best when you have a buy-in on the local level. I’ve seen stations that run shows and have embraced them as part of their own brand, and they do quite well. If it’s not woven into the fabric of the station, you are less likely B-Dub to achieve success.” Ultimately, syndication needs to be part of the greater evolution. “We need to think bigger,” says Wolkoff. “Not just radio, but audio. I have no doubt radio will continue to exist 100 years from now, but in a different form. Someone in one part of the country or the world will be communicating and connecting with others elsewhere through audio. We need to embrace that communication and find new ways to make it happen.” –Sue Wilson Lon Helton, lon@countryaircheck.com Chuck Aly, chuck@countryaircheck.com Caitlin DeForest, caitlin@countryaircheck.com Monta Vaden, monta@countryaircheck.com (615) 320-1450 ©2020 Countr y Aircheck™ — All rights reser ved.
