The crises in Gaza, Iraq, Ukraine and beyond tend to be reported as separate tragedies. In fact they are all linked to the increasingly aggressive western foreign policy promoted by Nato. Western leaders’ disgraceful response to the Israeli attacks on Gaza was a direct result of the fact that Israel remains their main ally in the Middle East. The horror in Iraq is a product of the seven year occupation of Iraq. The destruction of Iraqi infrastructure, the brutality of occupation and the divide and rule tactics used to sustain it have brought Iraq to the brink of breakup. The war in Ukraine is the result of two and a half decades of Nato expansion in Eastern Europe, including the incorporation of twelve new countries.
1949 The flip-side of the west's wars is their obsession with free market policies. They impose them at home and abroad to maximise their profits, wrecking the lives of millions in the process. We have to mobilise against the cuts consensus. The October 18 TUC demonstration needs to be turned in to a massive display of anti-austerity anger.

As calls grow for Britain to join the US bombing of Iraq and Syria, the anti-war movement needs to escalate its campaign and insist that Western intervention is the central problem and therefore can be no part of the solution. We have already had an impact. The tide of opinion has been turned in favour of the Palestinians. So far, the British government has hesitated to join the bombing of Iraq. We have to keep them on the defensive.
