Thetford Open Gardens 2016 The 10th anniversary of Open Gardens in Thetford has been a huge success so far. There were some lovely pop up gardens open in the Spring. This started the quest for raising £10,000 in the 10th year raising money for St Nicholas Hospice Care. There was a plant sale held in May, which raised another £250 and on Sunday 26th June the biggest open gardens day yet took place. In spite of the showers at the start of the day and the rather cool weather for June, people came out to support the wonderful gardeners, who had worked so hard this year to make their flowers prolific, their patios scrubbed and their cream teas delectable! And it worked! Over £9,120 has been already and organisers are due to hold a concert in a couple of weeks time, so there is a real chance of making the target of £10,000 for the ten years.

Too busy?

Rachel Woods, one of the organising team said: “Thank you to all our visitors who so generously bought programmes, raffle tickets and glasses of Pimms or sandwiches to sustain them on their journey around 38 wonderful gardens, or took home plants to brighten up their own garden. Thetford is really a place to be proud of. Thank-you to everyone for your support”. Out & About Thetford Thetford Grammar School Art & Design Technology Exhibition

About Thetford was delighted to be invited to the annual exhibition at TGS of GCSE & A Level work. Every year the work exhibited includes textiles, photography and fine art. Speaking about the exhibition, Head of Art, Amanda Sherring said “You get so busy putting the work out, you don’t really realise what it looks like & suddenly, you get to this point & think Wow! Everyone is saying how amazing it is, & I really do think it is. This is definitely the best yet.” Head of Design Technology, Heather Pringle commented on the students progress “I think this year a lot of the pieces have been very much a personal journey for some of our students. It’s expressed in the standard of finish & work that they produced. We often joke about it in DT, DT isn’t a subject, it’s a way of life.” Bronze, Silver & for the first time, Gold Arts Award work from across Senior School was also showcased illustrating the school’s commitment to the arts.

Eyes Down for Bingo! Karen spent a lovely afternoon meeting the Abbey Senior

Club at one of their regular Wednesday Bingo sessions in the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre. Organised by Caroline Powell, the group plays bingo throughout the year and also goes on organised trips. One of the members, Lesley said “My friend Gill told me about the bingo, we came up, they made us so welcome & were very friendly. It’s like village bingo, then having the raffle makes its special and we have a laugh. Instead of one line or two lines we do 3 , 2, 1 and then we do the corners. It’s a lot more fun and it’s a cheap afternoon. We have tea and biscuits and on birthdays people bring cakes in. It’s lovely.”

Royal celebrations!

Tesco Community Champion, Sarah Douthwaite invited Karen to join her at Redcastle Family School to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday with the children & their families. Karen was greeted by a riot of colour and sound as everyone joined in the fun! Over 200 children and their families enjoyed food inspired by the commonwealth, including crocodile, kangaroo, rice & peas, curry and scones. Chair of Governors, Pat Pearson attending with Mrs Pat told Karen that he was delighted to attend. “It has been an excellent event thanks to the hard work of the head, teachers and kitchen staff. I was particularly struck that even though the school has 20% of children with English as a second language, every pupil joined in singing the National Anthem. We are very proud.” Tesco supported the event by supplying fruit, cakes, ice cream and sauces. Sarah said “I’ve had a fab time promoting our farm to fork trail, we love helping our community.”

New Cafe Opens The smell of bacon rolls filled

the air at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre when the About Thetford team were invited to the official opening of The Abbey Cafe. Keystone CEO, Louise Humphries told Karen how the new team in Thetford were committed to investing in the community, “We don’t want to take over the world but we do want to be able to provide the space, infrastructure and support that community groups need to get their own activities started. It’s been amazing, we knew we had the kitchen here, but it wasn’t a cafe. We got the funding from Breckland Council for capital works, & once we moved our offices here, people kept coming in and saying ‘when are you going to have a cafe? And now people are popping in and using it, and that’s what it’s all about.”

The Abbey Cafe team

Please sir, can I have some more? About Thetford was lucky enough to be invited to an Oliver! rehearsal by The Thetford Players recently. Director Caroline Foot, well known for the annual Panto has brought in new Musical Director Claire Lowe and some fantastic new acting talents alongside Panto regulars. Karen was treated to a fantastic rendition of ‘You’ve got to pick a pocket or two’. New leads, Madeline Soams & Thomas Chamberlin are fresh from Thetford Academy, and joined by Craig Plumley who is playing Fagin in his first performance since school (hard to believe—but true!) Tickets are available at Thetford’s Great Information Centre.

Annual General Meeting The Charles Burrell Centre is managed by an independent charity, appropriately named Charles Burrell Centre Ltd. Our AGM is taking place on: Wednesday 20th July 2016 at the Centre from 7.30pm

Update from Centre Manager; Mark Snowdon

This is open for anyone to attend. Shareholders will be able to vote on rule changes and choose a new shareholders’ representative to sit on the CBC Ltd Board. Shares can be purchased for just £1 in advance from the Centre.

We recently had the honour of hosting the Mayor’s Civic Reception at Charles Burrell Centre. And what an honour it was! (Pictures on left hand page). Councillors, Head Teachers, charity workers, military personnel and business executives were amongst the guests that toasted Councillor Jermy’s vision to raise aspirations of young people locally by breaking down barriers in order for them to reach their full potential - a fitting story told within a former school building which stood empty less than two years ago.

HatsDontSell

I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers at the centre for their outstanding commitment to ensure the centre was fit to host such an event. Once again we set our standards very high and proved that our level of service can match any occasion. We have a number of events taking place in the coming months from wedding receptions to awards ceremonies proving that Charles Burrell Centre has become a popular and highly regarded venue. Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting at the Captain Mainwaring statue on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 10th July at 11 am? The walk lasts about 90 minutes but recently our walkers have wanted to go on a bit longer; it’s down to you! We’ll be taking a trail through some of the fantastic wildlife habitat in Thetford, looking for birds and other wildlife. Whether you are an expert or beginner, adult or family with budding young naturalists, all are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome! There is no need to book but for more information, contact 01842 753732 or email us: thebrecks@rspb.org.uk There is always plenty of wildlife to see. There are ducks, geese, and swans on the river, and if we are lucky we might even see a kingfisher or grey wagtail. Each walk brings something different, and this time of year is a great time for dragonflies and butterflies, especially if the sun is shining. The walks are turning out to be a delightful, informal way of getting out and engaging with nature, sharing wildlife stories and just having a chat so if

West Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project Report In May after reports that the Ballpark was in a bit of a mess, I organised a ‘flash litter pick’. I was astounded by the number of people that attended and would like to thank them all for their hard work. A big thank you too to Peter Gibson who also came and mowed the grass. This event showed such great community spirit.

Do you have items that others could make use of? Have you tried advertising them on Freegle, Gumtree, Freecycle or other such sites? If you don’t have a computer or the knowhow, please give me a call on 07835316370 and I can help. During the summer holidays I will be organising a Family Recycling Funday at the Charles Burrell Centre. There will be games, things to make, prizes to be won and lots of fun. Entry is one item that can be recycled per person. Feel free to bring a picnic. Look out for the posters and information via ‘Thetford Forum’ on Facebook soon or contact me on 078353 163370.

Recently there has been many postings on social media regarding the Recycling Centre in Thetford. There appears to be some confusion about what can and what can’t be taken there and also about which items have to be paid for. The recycling centre is located at 15-17 Telford Way, Thetford IP24 1HU. It is open from 9am – 5pm, 7 days a week (1 April – 30 September). It is open as usual on bank holidays but closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

It is designed to provide a stimulating activity for restless hands and are particularly therapeutic for patients suffering from dementia. You can find out more about twiddlemuffs and lots of patterns at: www.knitforpeace.org.uk

Chair of the Trustees, Lynn Ready said: “We provide a valuable resource for retired and semi retired people in the area and I'm hoping we can get our members more involved in the local community. For example, our Musical Instrument Group recently gave a concert at The Red House Care Home. The residents sang along and everyone had a great time.”

With around 50 active interest groups, covering a wide range of subjects, as well as sports and social events, Thetford U3A is the largest voluntary group in the region.

If you or someone you know might be interested in the U3A, please contact us through our website at: www.thetfordu3a.org Or just come along to one of our regular monthly meetings at the Carnegie Room (opposite the Library). New Project to Rebuild West Stow Flint Walls In March, the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme opened applications to their People's Pot fund. One of the new projects selected to be funded by this scheme is at St Mary's Parish Church in West Stow. This is a project to repair flint walls within the church yard, where volunteers of all ages will get together to clear up the church grounds and prepare the walls for restoration. A large tree has already been felled which was threatening the stability of the historic walls.

flint wall surrounding the churchyard for work to start on its rebuild, ivy needs to be removed and flints that have fallen out need to be collected up. The day's efforts will begin at 9.00am and finish at 5pm with a barbecue for all those who will generously have given their time. If you would like to take part, and you have not already informed the churchwardens, please contact them by telephoning 01284 728745. Participants will be provided with light refreshments during the day. It would help greatly if strimmers, mowers, secateurs and other gardening equipment could be brought along by those taking part!

If you would like to get involved, come along to the Open Church Tidy-Up Day on Saturday, 16th July. St Mary's Mon-Fri 9am-4pm Parish Church is holding a day when the community will join in to give the church and churchyard a face-lift. • Scooters • Wheelchairs • Walking aids • Bath Aids • Living Aids • Riser Recliners • Profiling Beds Members of the village, including the Parochial Church • Incontinence Supplies • Servicing and Repairs Council, will be tending and improving the churchyard by way of some serious mowing strimming, cutting and pruning. Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes for July After the lush richness of June, July can be a difficult month with great heat and dryness. If you can mulch beds after rain this will help retain moisture. Gravel provides the same benefit and also provides a good background to grasses and other plants. If you have a plant-free gravelled area, you might consider putting some grasses in one corner to give the area some interest. There are some attractive varieties from 6 inches tall to 6 foot and they require little attention. Plants are also our only source of oxygen so really rather a good thing! The lawn can need attention as we trample it more this month. Certainly it helps to raise the cutting height of the mower as the rate of growth will slow down during July – and that means less frequent mowing too! Any new area of grass, seed or turf, will need watering regularly to establish the roots. If you put a jam-jar out when you start up the sprinkler you will be able to gauge how much you need. Half an inch in the jar will show that you have given the area a thorough soaking, any more is just running to waste. Meanwhile moles may be visiting your lovely lawn. There are very few cures for this problem. As they are tunnelling to catch worms, the most radical solution I have heard of is to poison the worms. That won’t do your soil structure much good of course. Windmills stuck in the ground so that the vibration sends confusing sound waves do not seem to work very well. (Neither does my preferred variation which involves wine bottles sunk into the soil so that the wind blows over the open top giving a strange whistling.) I have a friend who swears by moth balls and castor oil in the tunnel but have not tried this method myself. You may have to use traps. To a generation brought up on “Wind in the Willows” the thought of killing jolly old Moley goes against the grain but it is no fun waking up to see a great mound of dirt and stones in the middle of the garden. Meanwhile cutting back flower heads as they die off will encourage a second flowering. This is particularly

important with hanging baskets or tubs but can be the work of a few moments each day while you are watering. If you did not provide supports for tall growing perennials, some twigs or sticks can be put in now to stop them collapsing. You also need to water any trees or shrubs you have planted in the last year. It takes time for their roots to establish and a good soaking once or twice a week will encourage them to send their roots deep into the soil. If you have a fast growing hedge that will need clipping this month and it would be a kind act to walk along your house boundary after rainfall to see whether any trees or bushes are likely to hit pedestrians in the face. You will be reaping the reward now for your work in the kitchen garden but keep planting salad crops to get the benefit of new young plants. It is time to start feeding tomatoes with potash to encourage bright fruits. Winter brassicas (sprouts, broccoli etc) need to be planted out and protected from pigeons. You can also peg down strawberry runners if you want to create new plants. Apples and plums need to be thinned to 3 or 4 to a cluster if they are to provide a good crop. Any new shoots developing on cordons or espaliers need trimming back to 3/5 buds and suckers need to be torn out if possible. If you cut them they will come again – but then there’s always something needing attention.... Our meeting this month is on Thursday 28th July at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church. The advertised speaker is unable to come so Barry Gayton will now be talking about Magnolias. All welcome – there’s a raffle and free refreshments, not to mention advice and chat – good value for £2. Thetfords Great Festival

Queen’s 90th Birthday Street Party

The weather may not have been very summery recently but the festival events will definitely give you that summer feeling. Running from August 19th through to September 4th, there are plenty of new events this year to whet your appetite such as a buffet and picnic in Kings House Gardens with Phil from Gaia’s Kitchen, a Barn Dance in the Carnegie organised by U3A and of course Midsummers Night Dream outdoor theatre at the beautiful Lynford Hall as Thetford celebrates the 400th anniversary of our most famous bard William Shakespeare.

On Saturday 11th June Thetford celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a street party in the Market Square. Revellers arrived decked in red, white and blue with Union Jack hats, tops, balloons and cake stands.

We also welcome back some festival favourites such as Thetford Players Historical Character Walks, the variety evening and not forgetting Knight School.

A celebratory feast soon covered the tables as people settled down for an afternoon of live entertainment. The Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Terry Jermy welcomed everyone and invited everyone to sing the national anthem, which was sung accompanied by enthusiastic flag waving from the crowd. Ceroc were up next and put on a fantastic set teaching everyone a few new dance moves and then filling the dance floor with dance songs old and new. The second half on the afternoon was the Ruby Sisters who performed songs from the 20’s through to the 90’s as well as assisting the crowd in a wonderful rendition of Land of Hope and Glory and of course Jerusalem. A great afternoon was had by all with countless requests for another street party. So keep an eye on TTC events - you just never know!

Returning to Thetford’s Great Festival for a third time, Fine Time Theatre are bringing a brand new play entitled Pulp. Kiara Hawker, both company director and actress says: “This time we took inspiration from the story of Winston Churchill sending some of his secret papers to Thetford under an armed guard during World War II. They were to be transformed into one of the town’s unique products, Pulpware. We’re so excited to be premiering our telling of this story in the town itself!”

Flint & Obsidian Conference 14th - 16th July Ancient House Museum have organised an International Flint & Obsidian Conference which Thetford Town Council and the Staniforth Trust are proud to provide some of the venues for. Throughout the conference there will be events in Ancient House and the Carnegie as well as family events, such as flint knapping, Jormon cooking (Japanese Neolithic cooking) to taste and a civic reception in Kings House Gardens. So make sure you look out for more information as this is an event that is not to be missed.

Next month find out about our river day where they will be music, dance, Mens Sheds, pizza ovens, stalls, model boats, pond dipping, bike track and much more. To keep up with the latest go to the festival website www.thetfordsgreatfestival.org or follow us on Twitter: @thetfordcouncil and @Thet-fest.

Cre8tive Hair July AD_Layout 1 03/06/2016 09:58 Pag

What is Cellulite? For many years there has been a debate, does cellulite really exist?

SPECIALISING IN ALL ASPECTS OF HAIRDRESSING

Hello Summer...

The medical field do not have a term to describe it and also it is not found in medical textbooks. The skincare industry has recognised it is an issue for many women (approx 85% of the population) but men are rarely affected. It is also a multi-million pound industry for companies marketing products, lotions and potions and the beauty industry making claims of wonder treatments to help banish cellulite. So, what actually is cellulite? Well, the term cellulite is a word used to describe dimpled “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” skin usually found on the thighs and buttocks. There are two types of cellulite. There is full blown and visible on relaxed skin with the naked eye. This is the type which can only be seen when the skin is pinched together between the fingers. Studies have proved it is not caused by being overweight, even exercise fanatics and female athletes can have it. It is thought there is a connection between the male hormone testosterone, it appears to stop the cellulite forming, and hence this is probably why hardly any men get cellulite! The technical term is that cellulite is caused by the subcutaneous fat within the fibrous connective tissue becoming herniated, sounds horrid! Factors which affect cellulite are gender and race, people with poor lymphatic drainage, poor circulation, and sedentary lifestyles. Dieting seems to have hardly any effects on improving or worsening the appearance. High stress levels have also been connected and the wearing of tight underwear enhances the formation of cellulite by restricting the flow of lymphatic fluid in the hips and thighs. We have a machine in the salon called Venus Freeze, which we use to treat cellulite very successfully. It uses magnetic pulse and radio frequency which raises the temperature of the treated area significantly to induce lipolysis. The fatty acids then pass from the fat cell into the blood stream and the volume of the cell is reduced. It takes as little as 30 minutes per area with the Venus and treatments are one per week for approx 6-8 weeks. Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Beauty Geek Column by Caroline King Tan Commandments The Summer has been a bit hit and miss. So perhaps you are thinking of looking at the fake tanning route? There are numerous brands and products available on the high street and from professional outlets. All with the same desired results….to give you a natural tanned glow without the damage of UV. Tanning products are more popular than ever. This also means that the ingredients and products themselves have improved. No more looking like an orange! With this in mind, here are my top ten tips to a good fail safe self-tan application. 1. Before you even think to apply, carry out a full body exfoliation paying particular attention to drier areas and knees, elbows, hands and feet. Do this at least a day or two before. 2. Moisturise after you have exfoliated but not on the day or immediately before you apply, unless you have very dry areas, as this could cause streaking or the product could grab and cause it to darken. 3. Ensure all your hair removal has been done 24hrs before you apply. Otherwise you could end up with a patchy tan. 4. Use disposable gloves when you use self-tan to avoid orange hands. 5. Before you start to apply make sure you have dark underwear and loose clothing on to wear whilst the tan is developing. Tan should wash out of clothing but don’t wear your best items. 6. Start your application from the bottom of the body upwards leaving out areas that need less tan such as knees, elbows, feet and hands and face till the end.

Work in small areas at a time, working up the body. Remember less is more! Use fewer product, work it in and then, if needed, go back for more. 7. On areas such as hands, feet, knees, elbows and the face mix a small amount of the tan with your regular moisturiser. This will not only dilute the product it will stop the product from grabbing on drier areas. Orange hands and feet are a self-tan give away! 8. Once you have applied it to the body, use a tanning mit or a flannel and start from the first area you applied with very gentle buffing action over the areas you have applied tanning lotion. This will ensure excess is all removed and the tan is nice and even and buffed in. 9. Leave the hands till last. Spread fingers out and work in between the fingers, around the knuckles and blend into the wrist area so you don’t have a harsh line. Avoid getting it around cuticles and on natural nails as it will grab. 10. Allow between 6-8 hours to develop depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. Then wash off trying not to rub the skin whilst towel drying. Rinsing off the next day will remove all the excess tan and you will be left with a lovely glowing tan that should last 5-7 days. Remember to moisturise your tan otherwise it will dry out and start to go patchy. Best wishes, Caroline King - Beauty Geek

For a man more familiar with 2 minute weather reports he managed to entertain for over 40 minute with his talk on his career, detailing the advances in weather reporting since his early days with the Met Office at RAF Mildenhal and RAF Honington in the 1970’s. He emphasised the unimaginable development in computing and satelite technology over the last 50 years which has reduced the guesswork required for weather forecasting. He donated his fee to the East Anglian Childrens Hospice. Pictured below, left to right: Tom Muir (President), Janey Macky (Inner Wheel Chairman) and Jim Bacon.

Cats And The Law Much of the law in relation to animals has now been consolidated in the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which applies in England and Wales, The Animal Health & Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011. The Act contains provisions which are aimed at preventing cruelty and promoting and ensuring the welfare of animals. The Act applies to both domestic and feral cats. In addition to cruelty offences, the Act now places an obligation on owners, as well as those in charge of or responsible for cats to ensure that their welfare needs are met, emphasising the need for a suitable environment. A place to live, a suitable diet, to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, to be housed with, or apart from other animals, and to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

ensure that their cats do not cause injury to people or damage to property. Cats Protection is a welfare and rehoming charity and as such, is not set up to investigate or prosecute animal welfare offences, whereas the RSPCA is structured in this way. If you do suspect an animal is being neglected or subjected to cruelty, you should call the RSPCA’s 24 hour cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.

The penalties for committing an offence of cruelty or for failing to provide for an animal’s welfare needs include a ban from owning animals, a fine of up to £20,000, or a six month prison sentence. Cats are regarded in law as the ‘property’ of their owner. A cat that is lost or has strayed is generally regarded as the property of the original owner. It is therefore necessary to make all reasonable endeavours to locate the original owner whenever possible. Because the law regards cats as property, an offence may be committed under this Act if a person, without lawful excuse, kills or injures a cat belonging to another person. Is a commonly held view that cats have a ‘right to roam’ wherever they wish. The Road Traffic and Dangerous Dogs Acts do not apply to cat owners. arrangements

If mediation is not successful it may be necessary to seek legal advice and consider making an application to court for a Child Arrangements Order. That court process will encourage parents to reach an agreement which may then be encompassed within the terms of a court order. All of this can take a considerable amount of time whether it is reaching an agreement between parents, attending mediation and especially if an application to court is required. It is therefore important to plan well ahead of school holidays so that if an agreement is not reached there will be sufficient time to seek the necessary advice and assistance.

What can happened to the children when parents separate...

It is now essential for there to be a referral to mediation before an application to court is made, indeed an application to court has to be signed by a mediator (there are some limited exceptions to this).

The Grand Unified Theory of Everything Branding

if you’re really brave YouTube. Brands are becoming a visual voice in this digital age and having a brand that customers can trust is priceless.

by Ryan Windsor

So to help you unify your company’s brand I’ve come up with 5 tips:

So I have something to admit… I’m a huge fan of The Big Bang TV series and this article was inspired by one of their episodes and a conversation I had with a local entrepreneur this month at Charles Burrell Centre.

1. Be consistent – Make sure your logo, type and company colours is consistent across all platforms both print and digital. 2. Know your customers’ needs and wants – Modern customers are extremely brand loyal. Knowing what your customers like will have them coming back time and time again. Not knowing might see them leave to a competitor.

Now I’m not going to talk to you about partial physics I’ll be talking about branding but it’s strange how The Grand Unified Theory has so much in common building a company’s identity. Just check out this quote: “Smaller singular forces, are merged into one larger single force. This unified interaction is characterized by one larger gauge symmetry and thus several force carriers, but one unified coupling constant.”

3. Brands are a perception – Not yours but your customers. Listen to them and change with the times. 4. Focus – Any successful company and brand knows they can’t be everything to everyone. Focus on one customer segment.

I’m definitely not trying to say that I understand the science behind it but what I get from that quote and from The Big Bang series episode is that smaller parts often become the whole. Let’s take Branding as the example. In a traditional company there are many products, people, and places. These aspects of the company may all be slightly different but ultimately come from one company. The company wanting to build and grow needs to let people know who they are and what they do so they brand their goods and services. In a traditional company this takes the form of a logo. This first step gives the company an identity and helps set the tone of the business which is communicated to its customers. Today things are a little more complicated but don’t worry I’m here to help. Now we don’t just have to worry about brand design and logos but also social media, websites, blogs for content creation and

5. Be real – We live in a digital age and anything less than authentic might lose you customers. Would you like to ask Ryan a question? Email: ryanwindsor89@gmail.com

Re-Skims

Thetford Society

Grammar School Cricket Success

The June meeting of the Thetford Society welcomed Lord Iveagh who spoke about the changes the Elveden Estate had seen over the last 121 years. The newly dualled A11 had brought benefits to the village and to the transport movements on the estate, as had the advances in technology. He spoke of his conservation interests and particularly the protection of the stone curlew nesting areas. Elveden Hall, untouched for 24 years, had proved an attraction for film companies. Members then saw a CD made some years ago of buildings in Thetford by a group from the Society which is currently being reproduced for sale. Details from Mike Brindle 753566. The Society barbecue will take place on July 30th and members were encouraged to sign up for the trip to the Cromer Pier Show in August. For more details contact Pat Smith 752854. The next monthly meeting on July 5th sees the return of Rachel Duffield who will give an insight into the life (and costumes) of Elizabeth 1st. New members always welcome.

On Wednesday the U15 team took on Norwich School in the final of the T20 Norfolk Cup held at Thetford Grammar School. After beating Wymondham College in the quarter-final, the semi-final opponents conceded the match as they could not make the chosen date; this meant that Thetford Grammar School qualified directly for the final. Thetford Grammar School lost the all mportant toss and were put into bat on a damp, muggy and overcast afternoon. This made batting very difficult and with the quality of the Norwich bowlers they bowled TGS out for a low score. Norwich reached the required target in rapid fashion. The competition was a great experience for the boys and they all did extremely well to reach as far as they did and should be proud of their runners up trophies.

earnings from investments, such as property or savings. If your total income is less than your personal allowance of £11,000, you won’t pay any tax. If it is above £11,000 you’ll be taxed at 20, 40 or 45% as usual. Don’t rush into any decisions and find out more about your pension options at: www.pensionwise.gov.uk If you need advice on this or any other issue, please visit our website www.citizensadvice.org.uk, or pop in to see us. We are open from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m., four days a week (Tuesday to Friday) and we are based in Breckland House, St Nicholas Street, IP24 1BT (opposite the bus station); Telephone 01842 752777.

“I’m 55 and looking into my plans for retirement. I want to cash-in part of my defined contribution pension pot worth £60,000 but I’m confused about tax. How much can I take out of my pension pot tax-free and how much tax will I pay on the rest?” Pensions are taxable income, however special rules mean you can usually take up to 25% of your pension pot tax-free. You can take your 25% tax-free lump sum out of your pension in one go. For your pension pot of £60,000, if you take a 25% tax-free lump sum you’ll get £15,000 tax-free. For the other £45,000, you’ll need to buy an annuity or drawdown product, which is subject to tax. If you don’t want to take your 25% tax-free lump sum in one go, another option is to take multiple cash lump sums (UFPLS), rather than buying an annuity or a drawdown product. If you do this, you will get 25% taxfree of each lump sum. For example, if you were to take £1,000 per month out of your pension, £250 would be tax-free. The remaining £750 is taxable.

Young Obsidian Ambassadors Last summer Teenage History Club visited Nagawa, Japan to explore the links between flint and obsidian. During their visit the young people gathered information and evidence to allow them to contribute to the enhancement of an Online Resource for Japanese Archaeology. Their research included visiting the Obsidian Festival in Nagawa and knapping obsidian artefacts themselves! The teens also had the chance to dress and paint their faces Jomon-style (see left) This summer Nagawa Town is sending 14 young people to Thetford. The group is known as the Young Obsidian Ambassadors. The group will be involved in East Meets West Flint and Obsidian Family Day on 16 July teaching visitors how to knap obsidian. Do come along to say hello!

Kuk Sool Won - Thetford Student of the Month for May 2016 is Edgar Da Silva. Edgar is currently working towards his blue belt (pictured here with the orange Student of the Month belt) and is always an energetic and enthusiastic contributor to our classes. He is extremely attentive and listens very carefully to input from instructors which has seen his skill levels increase massively over recent months. Congratulations and keep up the good work! Edgar was also one of 19 students that competed in the Kuk Sool Won European Championship tournament on the 3rd and 4th June. The tournament drew over 900 competitors to the UEA who competed in events such as sparring, forms, self defence techniques and weapon demonstrations. The tournament was a huge success and our students from Thetford represented the school with passion, commitment and style. Congratulations to Gabby Royal, Philip Da Silva, Edgar Da Silva, Abbie Reeve, Mari Parker, Izzy Nicolaou, Beatriz Da Silva, Gustavo Pacheco, Marcos Baretto, Josh Eves, George Carter, Leon Racey, Paulo Da Silva, Samuel Nicolaou, Chris Nicolaou, Tom Parker, Karen Parker, Kevin Baretto, Daniella Dunsmore. Thetford Town Boxing Club

sport is what kept me on the straight and narrow, off the streets and away from drugs and alcohol. I believe the youngsters of Thetford deserve that opportunity as well. I believe there is some great champions in the town.

The Club is well on course to becoming a reality after some real progress over recent months. The club was founded by Matthew and Sonny Dean in January of this year, the first boxing club in the town for 24 years. The club has secured premises after some fantastic support from the Keystone Development Trust. A strong committee is currently working its way through all the official procedures required to run an club affiliated to England Boxing. A number of local Thetford businesses, individuals and a boxing club from Hertfordshire have made some fantastic contributions. Any future donations or contributions would be very welcome. A group from Thetford are walking the whole length of the Angles Way from Great Yarmouth to Thetford to raise funds for the club. A dedicated team of volunteers are currently working hard behind the scenes to get this club off the ground and open for the new boxing season in September. Watch this space for news of this up and coming community based club.

For more information search for Thetford Town Boxing Club on Facebook or @ThetfordTownBC on Twitter.

Head coach Matthew Dean said: “Having boxed myself for Thetford Silver Ring as a youngster, I know the benefits of being part of the sport, the disciplines it teaches people, and the guidance it can offer young people who may not have guidance in their life.
