Note from the Editor Well, we’re nearly there; Exam time! Gulp! No doubt you’re all very busy with your revision and endless amounts of homework… but hopefully you’ve got a few extra minutes to browse through this; our latest issue of the Student Eye. If you didn’t catch the last issue, it’s written completely by students, for students! (And you can all get involved!). On a college lunch break? Bored? Want more from your college? Well, instead of throwing me in the next bin you pass in the street, read on!
Interested? Well pop into the Enrichment Offices located room 1/17 Arts; 2/22 Clarence and 3/27 Duke.
Heard of Enrichment? Well just in case you haven’t, briefly, Enrichment is run by a team of college staff that offer activities, projects and events, these opportunities are available on lunch breaks and outside college time and usually take place on-site (or with transport provided), so you have no excuse! Give it a go! The Enrichment Team offer a variety of activities that range, from DJing to Bollywood dancing. As for this coming term, as well as the Health Awareness and Diversity Weeks here’s some of what’s coming up: • A fishing trip in Sat May 1st • Football tournament Wed May 19th • Sponsored Danceathon Sat May 15th Plus...the Lunch Clubs and Student Rooms
Whilst on the subject Enrichment, how about taking the chance to win £20 by entering the Student Eye photography competition? Simply take a photograph of an Enrichment activity going on in the summer term, hand it in to the team and the best one will be chosen. Lights, Camera, Community College? Yes that’s right LCC’s Got Talent has been and gone, but for those of you that didn’t make it, here’s a review of the show. 3:00pm came and the pressure was building, all of the acts were preparing for their last rehearsals before the show started. All were very nervous, so just to increase their nerves I decided to hound them like a true journalist and ask them some questions.
What would winning mean to you? Chris Buhagiar: I’m just here to participate, have fun, and help raise money, winning isn’t important to me. Amina Vernett: It would mean a lot and also boost my confidence.
How are you feeling? Becky Seaman: Nervous but excited. Sophie Banlin: Extremely nervous.
5:30pm, the contestants had little time left to prepare, the girls were rushing round, the sound guy was doing his tests, and as usual the bands were just chilling out and waiting for the show.
What do you think of the other competitors? Kay McGrory: Amazing, my nerves are so much 6:00pm the show finally kicked off and we worse now that I’ve met them. The comedians were in short supply, but none the less, they were still hoping to make the audience laugh. Our first comedian David Rowlands was hilarious and gave a really good performance, aside from running off the stage, which was later forgotten by him resuming the rest of his act that brought the audience to tears. The other comedian involved was Joseph Reynolds, who gave his comedic edge, good sense of humour and impressions to the talent show. What talent show wouldn’t be complete without dancers? The acts involved, although totally different styles, both showed the audience how to really dance. First up out of the dancers was Adam Sorrell (front cover image) who showed just how

Short Story - part 2 Claudia and Timothy a Night Forever More. Cont... ve ati g e r C tin i r w
Two months went by and the English vampire army began to call their father the Vampire King. Letters and Messages were exchanged between the French vampire king and their father and eventually it was arranged that a great war would be fought between the two halves in the deep underground tunnels below London on New Year’s eve of that year. The English vampires were to be led by General Timothy Icestone a handsome and charismatic young man the same age as Elizabeth and the French were to be led by General Henry Bloodstone, a ruthless young barbarian with an unquenching appetite for blood. On the eve of the battle as their father and Robert stood dressing in their armour Elizabeth came running in and clasped her arms around their father and wept begging him to stay safe. They left at midnight and descended deep into the pitch-black tunnels below the city. Elizabeth stood at her window and watched them go a tear rolling down her pale cheek her long flame red hair in sharp contrast to her pale face. Deep in the tunnels the two sides met and stood opposite each other in the dim green light that shone from strange mosses on the wall. Claudia slipped into the alcove with the other women and children as the war began. Timothy stood proud and strong in the candlelight his golden curls falling on the shoulders of his shining armour. His eyes flashed in anger 6

as he drew his sword and raised it high, his angelic face twisted in a terrible anger. Henry mimicked him at the opposite end of the tunnel his pale ugly face was lined with scars. His eyes were black. His fangs were bared in a wicked smile and his armour was blood red. Timothy gave the war cry first and Henry followed. The two groups charged at each other down the tunnels shrieking and howling, fangs bared, armour glinting and then with a terrible crash of armour and metal on bone the two sides came together. The fight was terrible bloody and violent both weapons and fangs were used. Claudia could see Timothy halfway up the tunnel fighting with Henry but going down hard. She turned and saw her father take out two at once by leaping from a ledge in the roof and spinning around, his fangs bared, waiting for the next opponent. She turned back again and watched in horror as Henry forced Timothy to his knees with his sword. It was in that moment Claudia had realised she was in love with Timothy and that he mustn’t die. She flew out of the alcove and into the midst of the battle but Robert had seen what was happening. He flew forward and threw her back into the alcove his face flecked with blood his fangs red and an open wound glistening just under his red hair. She stared up at her twin and looked into his huge dark eyes. “ I’ll protect him I swear but you have to stay here with the others. I know you love him and I promise he won’t be harmed “. She nodded silently. Robert flew towards Timothy, fangs bared and tackled Henry to the floor. Henry was too strong, he threw Robert aside like a ragdoll and leaped on top of him. Claudia watched in horror as he slammed her brother’s head into the tunnel floor knocking him out cold and then flew towards their father. Their father threw himself forwards with a menacing roar raising his sword and the two slammed together in a whirl of fangs and blood. Timothy was struck from behind and turned to face his attacker leaving their father to fend off Henry alone. Suddenly their father fell to the floor hard and Henry pulled out a giant wooden stake from the depths of his armour and his black eyes burning with sadistic pleasure plunged it through their father’s heart. ...to be continued in the next issue - By Jenny Lamont

At some point in our lives we’ve all felt a little anxious, angry or upset; frankly I wouldn’t want to meet the person that hasn’t. Many of us take out what we feel on others or even ourselves but what if there was a way to express what you feel without hurting yourself or starting those silly little arguments that happen when someone says the wrong thing just when you’re feeling that little bit overstressed.

“Without realising it at the time, art became my cure when I was about 17. Like a lot of people I was going through a very low time and didn’t know how to escape. Also like a lot of people, I wasn’t able to put how I felt into words, I felt trapped within myself. Unable to verbalize my thoughts, I turned to draw them. This could be something you keep to yourself or express to others, by sharing your experiences through your creative medium you could help people going through the same situation by encouraging them yourself to find their creative outlet. So if you are feeling a little stressed around exam times or just having one of those days, why not mess around with some paint, a pen and

Beauty and Body Image in the Media
Today the beauty industry in the media is bigger than ever and more influential on teenage girls than it’s ever been. It seems the standards being imposed on women and teens to be “beautiful” today is extremely immense, not to mention costly. Is it possible that these days school girls are more interested in their appearance than their studies? A new study, carried out by journalist Niovi Moore, shows that 90% of girls aged 12-15 wear make-up to school and 50% of girls as young as 10 have been taught or taught themselves how to apply make-up. This kind of behavior carried out by young girls just shows the impact the media can have by advertising “beauty” to such an extent. Media can have a huge impact on how people can and basically should, in their view, look. Lynsey Lohan is thought to have used surgery to ‘enhance’ her looks The pressures of Britney’s role model status and the media is believed to have resulted in her ‘breakdown’

Anorexia and Bulimia are both serious eating disorders which are believed to have increased within young people over recent years. Decisions A man is sitting in a darkened room all by himself. Behind a desk. Same old routine. Same old boredom. Regular as a clockwork. He wonders if this is how he is going to spend the rest of his working life. Day in, day out.
Where exactly did it go wrong though? He wasn’t meant to be here, not in this dump. He was meant to be in Oxford by this time, according to his little book, giving lectures to intellectuals that would shape the future of our planet. It was good luck that he actually got accepted into a university – albeit a lesser known one. He managed a lowly degree, not the PhD he was planning and luckily got a job in a small town in Northern Scotland, away from home, away from family – no employer close to home wanted him. And day in, day out, the routine began. The next nineteen years slipped by. He hasn’t even realised they’ve gone. It seems like yesterday he came here. He’s unmarried, lives in a small flat by himself . Not his fault though. How many times has he repeated that phrase?
He once again keeps telling himself that as he contemplates the bad choices that have led him to his current position. But it University was forgotten. wasn’t his fault, was it? Although this seems a familiar story it differs from all the many childish versions in many ways. One of these ways is through the classic, dry humour of Jane Lynch (plays Sue Silvester) who is better known for her part in Role Models as Gale Sweeney and the rest of the cast’s classic antics. The music isn’t bad either with songs such as Somebody to Love by Queen and Don’t Stop Believing by Journey the viewer’s ears are sure to be intrigued. The dancing could use a little work but I won’t be too harsh as the cast aren’t professional dancers their actors.

This year’s new hit in town is none other than Glee! Yes this is another High School Musical type show, but before you start to sigh and moan about actors who are about 30 trying to be high school kids and singing cheesy songs you should read this review. The story follows Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) who is a young aspiring football star and also the most popular kid in his school, that is until he joins Glee club. Finn has always had a passion for singing but until he is trapped into Glee club by his teacher, Mr Schuester (Mathew Morrison), he begins to realise how big that passion is. Although not a very good decision with his friends, Finn continues to sing in Glee even with the objections of his cheerleader girlfriend Quinn Fabray (Diana Agron) and his best friend Noah Puckerman (Mark Salling), but to the delights of Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)
With many interesting and upcoming stories to the rest of season one, which currently airs on E4 on Monday’s at 9:00, I shall leave the decision to watch up to you, however I recommend that you do!

The geek files part 1. Magic....... We all have a bit of a geek inside of us whether we like it or not. We should cherish and nurture it as it can bring us some of the best times in our snazzy little lives. I’m going to start this epic ‘Geek’ mini series with magic. Magic! I know what you’re thinking. No really I do. Taa daaa. Impressed? I didn’t think so. Well, old men in top hats, pulling rabbits out of places they shouldn’t come from and dusty wands come to mind. It’s an image I hate. Being a rather large geek, I take my magic quite seriously (yes I do magic) and therefore strive to demolish this terrible image.

Liverpool - Student Paradise?
Did you know that there are 4 universities in Liverpool? You’ve got to wonder what the attraction is, why do so many of us students flock to Liverpool every year to study here, so, is it really great to study in Liverpool?

would only set me back £3.49, that’s what was on the menu (which then set my dad back £3.49…can’t knock a day out with the parents). So, Boots meal in hand we made our way to the new canal. The new front looks fantastic, (lucky Birkenhead!) The Liverpool – Leeds canal has now been extended right into the centre of Liverpool, so we walked as far as the path would let us, this was great on a sunny day and didn’t cost us a penny to do. Along the way, we noticed the new building being built on the front. It’s a weird looking building but I can’t wait for it to open in 2010, it will be a new museum to add to Liverpool’s collection. There’s also the Maritime Museum to pop into, and the old Harbour master’s house to go and have a nose round. If you haven’t been they’re worth having a poke around. I would have on the day (for the millionth time) but something caught my eye…the ferry! Financial total so far - £6.89

We did the loop, though you can actually get off, there’s a guy on a voice who will fill you in on all the interesting facts about what you can see and the story behind it, but to be honest I was sitting there like a big kid because I hadn’t been on the ferry for years. We were on it for 50 minutes and it flew by! (Well...sailed) And for us lucky students, its only £6.40. This may seem a bit steep, but if you’ve got an hour to kill and someone to go with, it really is a laugh. Financial total so far - £13.29
So, it’s pushing 3:30pm and our little legs have done about all they can manage. While sitting on the 52A home, I had to think about the amount of stuff we’d done while we were there. We’d been trying to keep our time down in each place to get to the next and it still took up our day, if you were doing this purely for the 2:00pm – and we’re in the ticket office sake of doing it then you’re looking rushing the girl counting our change at doing it all over a few days, (if you out in pennies so we can make a run have that kind of time!) and the whole for the ferry. 2010: The Year of ‘Sharks’
A new decade, a new year and now you’re looking for your new favourite band. Where should you be looking? The home of Sharks; Royal Leamington Spa. The 5-piece punk band has been making a big impression on the press and the music scene over the past year, being tipped by the likes of NME for big success this year.
‘Gallows’, and 2010 promises only more. The 5-piece fuses a successful mix of The Clash’s punk attitude, with the artistic musings of Joy Division and Nick Cave.
Not content with a small town life, they reflected this in their songs, as the boys look for the big lights and a creative outlet.
