ENDLESS ADVENTURE A haven for lovers of the great outdoors

V

isitors to the historic town of Cottage Grove will find it and the surrounding area to be a gold mine of activity and exploration for all ages. There are nuggets to be found in both the town and country for those willing to search them out.

Dorena Lake is six miles east of Cottage Grove by way of Row River Road. This large lake covers 1,900 acres when full and features camping, a large boat ramp and picnic area at nearby Baker Bay Park. Schwarz Park is nearby and also offers camping.

The entire family will want to explore our historic downtown with its beautiful city parks, colorful murals, museums and small businesses.

Umpqua National Forest boasts a wide selection of hiking trails, campgrounds, picnicking spots, waterfalls and places to commune with nature. The forest covers 984,602 acres of mountain woodlands and is about 15 miles east of town, beyond Dorena Lake.

Recreation opportunities abound for those who are inclined to get out and explore the countryside, including a covered bridge tour and the Bohemia mining district. There are two U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs located outside of town that draw locals and visitors from around the state to their shores. Serene Cottage Grove Lake is a short five-mile drive south of town going out Sixth Street to London and Reservoir roads. The lake is three miles long and covers 1,158 acres when it’s full. Tent and RV camping are available at Pine Meadows Campground, in addition to a nearby primitive campground. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available at Shortridge and Wilson Creek Parks.

The Row River Trail is a popular Rails-to-Trails project that begins in Cottage Grove and winds 17 miles along the Row River, passing Dorena Lake along the way. It is a safe, scenic path that is paved for walking, biking or horseback riding. The gentle hills are possible for most stages of fitness, and the gorgeous scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Culture comes in many forms and includes performances at the Cottage Theatre’s beautiful state-of-the-art, $1 million facility that attracts and features local actors in a variety of plays. Other annual events include the rodeo and Bohemia Mining Days celebration in July, the WOE Heritage Fair in August, and the December lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree.

Cottage Grove’s disc golf course draws visitors from throughout the region.

CULTURE AND CLASS A taste of the finer things

Cottage Theatre

C

ottage Theatre has a reputation as one of Lane County’s finest community theatres. Now in its 34th season, Cottage Theatre performs to audiences of more than 11,000 people in over 75 public performances annually. The theatre’s current facility, which was built with community support in 1998 and expanded in 2006, is the only community theatre facility in Lane County that was custom-built as a theatre rather than being remodeled from some other use. Part of the mission of the theatre is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers and crewmembers are all local volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers are always welcome. Cottage Theatre currently produces a year-round main season of six productions annually. The 2016 season opened with “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in January and continues April 8-May 1 with the musical comedy classic, “Annie Get Your Gun.” June brings a fun-fi lled farce called “Scapino!” ( June 10–26). Shakespeare’s murderous tale of royal revenge, “Hamlet,” is next in the line-up, running Aug. 12–28. The Tony Award-winning musical “A Chorus Line” follows in the fall, Oct. 7-30. CT’s 2016 season closes with a family-friendly holiday play: “A Christmas Story” (Dec. 2–18) about a young boy who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. In addition to its main season, Cottage Theatre offers camps for youth ages 5 to 14 each summer. SKIT Camp, which will be held June 20-24 this year, is a week-long morning day camp especially for young actors ages 5-8. The camp includes instruction in acting, singing and dance and culminates in an informal performance for families. From June 30–July 15, Cottage Theatre will host

its 10th annual Melodrama Camp, a performance camp for actors 9-14. Melodrama Camp culminates in three public performances of an original melodrama (written by Cottage Grove playwright Keith Kessler) on July 15, 16 and 17 during Bohemia Mining Days.

Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village Drive in Cottage Grove, just across the street from the hospital. For more information about becoming involved, or for a current show schedule, visit www.cottagetheatre.org or call the theatre box office at (541) 942-8001.

or decades South Lane County has been known for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. The rivers and lakes have long attracted visitors. But in recent years, South Lane County has added a new attraction: wineries. The Willamette Valley, with its rich topsoil and mild weather, is a great place for vineyards. In recent years several growers have planted

hundreds of acres of grapes — pinots are a favorite — and their efforts have paid off. Many wineries have added tasting rooms that allow visitors to sample their products, and one can easily visit several in a day. A suggested route is to start with Saginaw Vineyard, approximately two miles north of Cottage Grove. It is located on Delight Valley School Road, off Saginaw East Road, and can be accessed either from Interstate 5 (Exit 176) or Highway 99. From there one can return to Cottage Grove and drive through town on Main Street to Lorane Road, then continue westward to Territorial Highway. Chateau Lorane, King Estate and Silvan Ridge-Hinman Vineyards can be accessed from Territorial. Sweet Cheeks Winery is another welcome stop on the route. The Umpqua Valley south of Cottage Grove also produces fi ne wines of many varietals, with wineries in Elkton greeting travelers on Highway 38 and award-winning vineyards such as Henry Estate and Abacela further south. A word of caution: Having a designated driver is suggested. Many of these wineries are accessed by narrow, winding roads, and driving under the influence (.08 in Oregon) is illegal.

COVERED BRIDGE CAPITAL OF OREGON Centennial Bridge This bridge was constructed in 1987 by volunteer labor to celebrate Cottage Grove’s centennial. It rests on abutments of the old Main Street Bridge, which stood until the 1950s. Swinging Bridge Located a half-mile upstream from Centennial Bridge, Swinging Bridge was built for foot and bicycle traffic and was mostly used by children crossing the Coast Fork to get to school. Chambers Railroad Bridge Built in 1925 by lumberman J.H. Chambers to cross the Coast Fork of the Willamette River from his sawmill to the timberlands west of town, this is the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. Restored in 2011. Mosby Creek Bridge Constructed in 1920 and restored in 1990, this is the oldest bridge in Lane County. Its one lane remains open to traffic today.

Stewart Bridge Constructed in 1930 and restored in 1996, this structure has semi-circular portal arches, ribbon openings at the eaves, and decorative S-curve brackets. The deep water below the bridge is considered one of the best swimming holes in the county.

Dorena Bridge Constructed in 1949 and restored in 1996, this bridge was built after the construction of Dorena Dam on the Row River, forming the present day lake. The Dorena Bridge once tied the roads on the north and south sides of the lake. Closed to traffic, the bridge is a popular wedding site. Currin Bridge Constructed in 1925 and restored in 1995, this bridge features white portals and red sides. Currin Bridge replaced an earlier covered bridge built in 1883 by a prominent local bridge builder, Nels Roney.

A stroll around Cottage Grove just isn’t complete without a walk over the Centennial Bridge, constructed in 1987.

The Currin Bridge and its counterparts are one of the most frequently cited reasons for a visit to Cottage Grove by out-of-towners.

HISTORY AND ITS STEWARDS Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history

he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white setters who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last fullblooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the Columbia River to Oregon

James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove in 1865.

Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city.

Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove.

A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out between west siders and those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which

Fire and Ambulance

Cottage Grove’s fi rst police department consisted of Samuel Veatch, who was elected as the fi rst town marshal in 1887.

South Lane County Fire and Rescue was created through a merger between Creswell Fire Department and Cottage Grove/South Lane Rural Fire Department July 1, 2003. The fi re district covers 132 square miles and provide EMS to 800 square miles with stations in Cottage Grove, Creswell and Saginaw. Camas Swale also has a substation. There are 19 crewmembers in the department and a target of 40 volunteers. These include paid and volunteer fi refighters, paramedics, EMTs and other staff. The department has four medic units (ambulances), three water tenders, one aerial apparatus, four brush trucks and five fi re engines for fi re response and suppression, emergency medical response and transport and rescue services. South Lane County Fire and Rescue, located at 233 Harrison Ave., can be reached at 541-942-4493. For emergencies dial 911. More information about the Department can also be obtained at southlanefi re.org, and SLFR regularly updates Twitter at @southlanefire.

Today, the town’s police department consists of the police chief, an operations commander, two investigators and 14 patrol officers. In addition, there are eight administrative and support-services personnel, one part-time Peer Court administrator and five volunteer reserve officers. These staffers provide full-time, 24-hour police coverage plus a full-time 911 dispatch center. The department also maintains a 16-cell correctional facility and provides police services for municipal court. Call the Cottage Grove Police Department at 541-942-9145.
