A part of the body’s affected each time that a cancer is found. The prayers then offered are many that God’s grace and mercy abound. The journey is only beginning, to travel alone there’s no need. The love and support of a family most treasured as any should be. The end of the road we don’t see yet, the outcome we truly can’t know. But God’s love and strength will support us as onward toward healing we go. Wilda Caplinger wrote this poem July 25, 2011. She is a member of the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Support Group, which donated $1,100 to Relay For Life this year.

Miss Relay 2012: Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m.

Jessie Tubbs knew there was no way she wouldn’t enjoy working on the Miss Relay contest. “It’s a great time and a fun part of fighting cancer,” she said. “It’s the one time the bleachers are packed full.” Tubbs chairs the Miss Relay contest and purse auction, two events that happen during Relay For Life, which is held Friday and Saturday, May 18-19 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Miss Relay takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday in the main stage area and the quilt, craft and purse

auction will happen Saturday at 2 p.m. in the commercial building. During Miss Relay, one man from each Relay For Life team is invited to dress up like a woman and show their glamour’s side. “You will see everything from beautiful gowns to moo moos from Goodwill,” Tubbs said. “Some of them will go all out with makeup and jewelry and others won’t shave. We’ve also had girls participate.” A panel of judges will choose a winner based on personality, evening wear and stage presence. They also will give out the titles of Miss Congeniality, Most Original and Miss Relay. “The contestants usually go with the theme of the year,” Tubbs said. “With this year being, ‘Planting Seeds of Hope,’ I expect to see more to do with gardening and flowers, but you never know what you are going to get until they show up.” She just asks that the contestants keep it G rated. “It’s a family friendly event,” Tubbs said. “Everybody is welcome. It’s been comical every year.” The Miss Relay contestants also get to advertise their team’s purse during the contest. “In the end all the teams win because people know what is in their purses and they go for higher amounts at the auction,” Tubbs said. All teams are invited to participate in the annual purse auction. This purse can be any container filled with items worthy of bidders to help increase the team’s total funds raised. Teams are asked to list all items included in the purse, with an estimated value, on a card for the auctioneer and bidders. “There is a lot of effort put into them,” Tubbs said. “Some will be packed full of gift cards and coupons. They usually go with the team’s identity. We’ve had golf bags, coolers and even baskets.” You don’t have to have a purse to participate in Miss Relay and you don’t have to participate in Miss Relay to have a purse. Over 40 Years of Service

Tyler McKee and Jenna Fowls Tyler and Jenna have been playing together for little over a year now. In July 2011 Tyler and Jenna competed in the Sundown Showdown at Buckeye Lake and placed third out of 46 different artists. Tyler grew up listening to Garth Brooks and always had a dream to play in front of people. He taught himself how to play guitar at age 11. Jenna has been singing since she was 2-years-old and won talent last year in the Miss Ohio Competition. Together they play a wide variety of different music such as Lady A, Carrie Underwood, Adele, Garth Brooks and Eric Church.

Walhonding Rube Band There was an African American barber who came to New Castle about 1913 and got some of the boys together with instruments. He taught them to play and they made the original Walhonding Band. Somewhere

Mike “Wacky” Wikoff Mike “Wacky” Wikoff has been singing since he was a child, from the rocking chair at home, in the shower and even in the church choir. Wikoff spent 13 years with the local band, “Midnight Riders”, and now performs as a solo act appearing as “Wacky Country”, which he has done for the past eight years. Wikoff said, “I have always enjoyed singing and entertaining people.”

COSHOCTON COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE PROGRAM

Jody’s Dance Group Jody’s Dance is a dance studio in West Lafayette that began on a patio at the Ridgewood High School in 1973. Still going strong after all these years, we offer tap, jazz, hip hop, baton, gymnastics, and beginning ballet. The dancers learn to dance with the greatest focus being on the child’s spirit and confidence. The child can forget about the concerns of their hectic week for just a little bit and get lost in the fun of dance as they look forward to a Spring Recital. Thank you to the community for all your support.

in the 1950’s, they allowed girls to join and at this time they played only marches. Around 1980, under the direction of Don Nixon, they began to play other types of music as well as marches and became the Walhonding Rube Band. We incorporate musicians from several counties in the vicinity and will accept anyone who has an instrument and knows a little about playing.

Maxine Metheney Band The Maxine Metheney Band is comprised of several local members. Maxine Metheney plays piano, rhythm guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals for the band. Maxine came from a talented family of which she, her three sisters and both parents performed as “The Clay County Sweethearts” around the state of WV. She continues to play music as does other members of her family including her 73-year old mother. Sam Stotts is a bass player and sings lead and harmony vocals. Jamie Shamel is a very talented singer and drummer. Randy Stotts runs the sound for the band. Sam Cox plays lead guitar and sings lead vocals. We love what we do and to please the audience is an added bonus. Our music ranges from old country to new rock and roll and a touch of blues with a smooth sound mix.
