COSHOCTON – The public is invited to attend two community events that will be in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001. Brad Collmar will host a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 9 at 12:05 p.m. on the Coshocton County Courtsquare lawn. Collmar has been having Sept. 11 memorial services since 2002. At the time of the attacks, Collmar was a commander with the American Legion and the national legion sent information on how to conduct a proper memorial service. “I was a welder in Millersburg at the time,” said Collmar. “The guys were always joking around and that day, my supervisor came and told us that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. We didn’t think much of it and thought he was joking, and then when he told us the second tower had been hit, I said, okay stop joking around. He took me in to his office and showed me on the TV.” Collmar has been conducting memorial services every five years since the attacks. This year, they will

them with quality health care,” said Dr. Mary Wakefield, HHS Acting Deputy Secretary. “These quality improvement awards will support health centers to continue to deliver superior health care that engages patients, improves care coordination and bridges overall access to care.” Health centers are receiving these funds based upon high levels of performance in one or more of the following categories: Improving Quality of Care, Advancing Health Equity, Maintaining Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Recognition, Enhancing Access to Care, and Delivering Value. This funding comes from the Affordable Care Act’s Community Health Center (CHC) Fund, which was extended with bipartisan support in the Medicare

Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015. “Health centers are evaluated on a set of performance measures emphasizing health outcomes and the value of care delivered,” said Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Acting Administrator Jim Macrae. “These measures provide a balanced, comprehensive look at services to manage conditions among the vulnerable populations served by health centers.” Through adult primary care, women’s health, pediatrics, dental health, and behavioral health, MVHC serves nearly 34,000 patients across Muskingum, Morgan, Coshocton and Guernsey counties. MVHC received $94,818 for quality care provided to its 34,000 patients. MVHC will use these funds to expand current quality improvement systems and infrastructure and to improve primary care service delivery in the communities they serve. MVHC received funding based on improvements made in one or more clinical measures as well as having the highest clinical performance in one or more clinical measures compared to their health center peers. Presbyterians host organist and carilloneur COSHOCTON - The Presbyterian Church, 142 N. Fourth Street, Coshocton, will host guest organist and carilloneur W. Robert Morrison on Sunday, Sept. 11. Dr. Morrison will play the organ, carillon, and piano for 10:30 a.m. worship, assisted by church organist, Alice M. Hoover. The service will include a time of reflection on the 15th anniversary of our country’s 9/11 tragedy. At 12:15 p.m., Mr. Morrison will play the carillon keyboard from the front steps of the church, and the sounds of the bells will be heard from the church belfry by those seated on the courtsquare and by those listening as the music wafts over the city. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the sanctuary. The afternoon concert will include a medley of hymns chosen from a list of audience requests, folk tunes, show tunes, and patriotic favorites. Some folding chairs will be available or listeners may bring their own. The concert will last about an hour. The Presbyterian carillon has touched the Coshocton community since 1946. The current 61-bell Schulmerich instrument was dedicated in October 1997, and dedicated to the glory of God in memory of Richard J. Finnegan by Kathryn E. Finnegan. On Oct. 29 of that year, it began ringing the Westminster chimes and tolling the hours and half hours, 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. A hymn tune is played

after the noon and 5 p.m. tolls. On Sunday mornings, the church school hour is announced with a special toll, and a 10:15 a.m. peal reminds worshipers to gather in the sanctuary. The carillon is also played occasionally in worship, providing thrilling bell descants for hymn singing. The Sept. 11 concert will mark Dr. Morrison’s fifth visit since 2007. Morrison, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, has studied at John Hopkins University, the Peabody Conservatory, Reformed Episcopal Seminary, and Westminster Choir College. He moved to Canton, Ohio in 1951 to become minster of music at First Methodist Church, the church home of President William McKinley. Following his retirement in 1995, he was named minister of music emeritus of the now renamed Church of the Savior United Methodist Church. Since 1997 he has served at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Canton. Morrison holds an honorary doctorate from Malone University, and is a Fellow in the American Guild of Organists. He has also recorded for the Schulmerich Bell Company. All are invited to worship and/or the carillon concert. The Presbyterian Church is located across from the courtsquare, and ample parking space is available. Contributed | Beacon

What our city needs Families that stay together, love, respect for each other, parents loving their children, children loving and honoring their parents, love for our spouses, love for those in hurting and broken marriages and more smiles. Sure times are tough in Coshocton, times are tough everywhere. Let’s have a change of heart and start loving the people of Coshocton off of their drug habits, addictions and welfare dependency. It is hard or impossible for anyone

to do it on their own! Years ago I would have thought all of this was impossible. . . but then I met Jesus. He has turned my life around so much. I want many more people in our city to know there is hope. Find a great Bible believing church and experience this hope. It is time for a real change in our city, and we can do it. With love for our city, Greg Catrow

COMMUNITY: Remembering 9/11 FROM PAGE 1 be recognizing local first responders, veterans, and military personnel. The keynote speaker will be Jeff Corder, retired safety service director, and the emcee will be Ken Smailes. The Coshocton High School band will be present to perform patriotic pieces. Collmar, who has family in the military and has also served, hopes that Sept. 11 will be remembered for years to come. “Pearl Harbor was our first attack, and now it’s just another day on the calendar for most people,” he said. The Coshocton Nazarene Church will also give the public an opportunity to remember that day. On Sunday, Sept. 11, the church service at 10:45 a.m. will be dedicated to honoring our local first responders. A dinner in honor of police, fire, and EMS will be served after the service. “We have a number of police officers in our church and they do so much for us,” said Pastor Dave Boots. “It’s a thankless job.” A representative from the county commissioners and the mayor will read a proclamation during the worship service. They will also honor the Danville police

officer Thomas Cottrell who was killed in action last January. The public is welcome to attend the service or listen to it live on WTNS radio. “It was one of those things that you were nailed to the TV for the rest of the day,” said Boots. “The church I was in at the time had special services all day so if people wanted to talk with Jesus about what they were seeing on TV or ask me questions, they could.” The Coshocton Christian School is also having a memorial service on Friday, Sept. 9 for students only. “It will be a spiritual emphasis on what the day means to us individually and as a nation,” said Principal Stan Zurowski. Zurowski said they have a variety of activities planned, one program planned for kids kindergarten through sixth grade and one for students in junior high and high school. The event will feature a time for prayer, videos from the day of the attacks, and songs from popular music artists. “It’s a combination of remembering Sept. 11 and with coming into the presidential election and what this country means to us,” said Zurowski.

Both contests are nationally recognized through the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and different themes for each contest are announced each year. COSHOCTON – The Pomerene Center for the Arts request for volunteers from River View High School fall sports teams came at a perfect time for Dave Kridler, head coach of the girls’ soccer team. “We had a game last night and this gives them a break from their routine and lets them think about something other than soccer for the day,” he said. The team and their coaches helped stack bricks Aug. 31 at Baird Concrete that the company donated to the Pomerene Center for the Arts for them to use at the artPARK. “They were left over from other jobs and were just sitting around the yard,” said Anne Cornell from the Pomerene Center for the Arts She said there were about 5,000 bricks and they will be used to construct a wall behind the wooden platform at the artPARK. “They can move them for us, but needed them restacked on pallets,” she said. “We needed volunteers to help do that so Althea Szabo, a senior at River View who is doing her (school) community service project with us wrote the athletic director at River View and asked for volunteers. He floated the idea to the teams and the girls’ soccer team stepped up. We are so grateful for them.” Kridler was glad to help.

starts. Mike Cichon and John Larson who helped coordinate the creation of a giant BLT at the 2014 festival will have something similar at this year’s event. “It won’t be another BLT, but it will be something fun,” Brad said. Other bacon themed goodies will be available from the food vendors. “We will have some local food vendors and some from out of town, but we requested they all have at least one bacon related item,” Brad said. Helping sponsor the 2015 festival are: Kraft Heinz/Oscar Mayer, Central Ohio Technical College, the Coshocton Foundation, Wen Mar Farms, Ace Hardware, Bakers IGA, the City of Coshocton, Help Me Grow, HilschireClarke Electric, Marilyn’s Natural Foods, Michael Taylor Insurance, PSI Industrial Solutions, Raymond James Financial Services, Three Rivers Therapy, and Vinyl Frontier. “They mean everything to us,” Brad said about the sponsors. “We couldn’t do this festival without their financial support. Their generosity is why this is a free festival. We also partnered with Our Town Coshocton this year and they are helping us put this together and supporting us. In 2017 we are going to move the festival back one week to join Our Town. They will have their First Friday and then we will have the bacon festival on Saturday.” Brad wanted to make sure he shared that the Ohio State football game will be playing in the artPARK so no one should have an excuse to miss this family friendly festival. ENJOY THE FESTIVAL!

COSHOCTON – Brad Fuller, his wife Cathy and a team of volunteers from the community are ready to once again celebrate all things bacon. The Appalachian Bacon Nation Festival, which was first held in 2014, will be held again Saturday, Sept. 10 in the 300 block of Main Street. “We were going to make it an annual event, but skipped 2015 because Cathy and I got married in August and there was no way to plan a wedding and the bacon festival,” Brad said. “We decided to skip a year, regrouped and got people in line for 2016 and will continue from here.” The festival starts at 8 a.m. with registration for the Bacon & Legs 5K Race and then families can enjoy activities all day long including the final event of the day, a family movie night starting at 8 p.m. or dark in the artPARK. Brad is excited to see many of the events from 2014 return, including the king and queen contest that will be held at 3 p.m. “We will crown a king and queen who are seniors at one of our three county schools and in addition to getting a crown they each receive a $500 scholarship for their next level of education,” he said. The 5K also should be once again successful. “Our inaugural race had almost 80 people participate and that was really good,” Brad said. “The organizers of the race have told me that with the people who have already registered for this year and those who will the day of the race, we should have over 100 in this year’s race.” A new event he’s looking forward to is a free family pancake breakfast with bacon put on at 8:30 a.m. by the Coshocton Fatherhood Initiative. “Their primary goal is to serve families and they will be bringing them together through food and fellowship,” Brad said. Families will enjoy the children’s play area that is being organized by the

Family and Children First Council and other volunteers. “They are taking the lead on this and there will be lots of good stuff going on,” Brad said. “There will be children’s games and different activities happening every hour. This event is designed for families. There will be no admission charged for the festival or the kids’ games. We want to provide an event families can come out to and enjoy together.”

COSHOCTON - It’s one thing to see an English splatter mask or a German “potato masher” grenade, but quite another to hear the background stories about how and why they were made. You’ll have a chance to hear about these two items plus learn more about the history and technology of World War I at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum on Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. Bill Given, curator of the museum’s special exhibit, Remembering the Great War, will give a tour of the show. Hundreds of collectibles are on display from uniforms, helmets and regulation supplies to presentation swords, hate belts and trench art. Given has been researching and collecting military items for more than 30 years. Admission for the WWI Exhibit Tour with Bill Given is $4 for adults, $3 for students, and free for Friends of the Museum. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum will offer monthly programs to commemorate the 100th anniver-

sary of WWI through 2017. This year’s programs include WWI Firearms with Jerry Meyer on Oct. 17, Family Stories on Nov. 14, and Film Night—Joyeux Noel on Dec. 12. The special exhibit, Remembering the Great War, will be on display through Dec. 31. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. through October and is located at 300 N. Whitewoman St., in Historic Roscoe Village. For information, contact JHM at 740-622-8710, e-mail jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org or visit its website www. jhmuseum.org. COSHOCTON – The minute Ed Penland ran out of apples he was asking for more so he could hand them out to attendees of the Kiwanis Club free produce market. Penland attends the day program at Echoing Hills, which is directed by Kassondra Reed. “He told me he likes this better than coming to workshop,” she said. Volunteers are a key part of the produce market as they register attendees, help hand out items and carry them back to people’s vehicles. “She asked so I came and I’m enjoying it very much,” Penland said. Susan Brinker, government and community relations specialist at Echoing Hills, said she is relatively new to Kiwanis Club and thought the produce market fit right in with the goals for their clients. “We are embarking on community integration and focus on keywords live, learn, work, play and worship,” she said. Penland was one of two Echoing Hills’ clients who volunteered and Brinker said she hopes next time they can bring more. Also helping out the Kiwanis Club members were students from the Coshocton Opportunity School. “This helps them out because they are around the public and get experience being with adults and helping our community,” said Shawn Cheney, Jobs for Ohio Graduates instructor. “I see it helping guide them because it shows them what it’s like to work. COSHOCTON - Saturday mornings usually find Jodi Shrimplin at Coshocton Farmers Market on Main Street, selling her handcrafted essential oil products with a friendly smile and “hello.” Jodi’s offerings include body scrubs and butters, lip balm, essential oil scents, and specialty products like roller ball insect repellent and calming lavender “monster spray” (for getting rid of monsters in children’s bedrooms). “I make and sell my products to show people that toxins and artificial fillers aren’t necessary,” says Jodi. “I began the toxin-free journey myself and want to show it to others. Especially after having children, it’s nice to use products that won’t injure them or bring on health issues down the road.” She says her scrubs and roller balls are always a favorite at the market, and her lip balm is a popular item, especially in the fall. Jodi was born and raised in Coshocton, and has been back and living in Roscoe Village for five years. She and her husband, Trey, have two boys, Connor (4) and Finn (2). Besides raising her children, Jodi is a substitute teacher in the River View Local School District. She also sits on the board of Coshocton Farmers Market, belongs to the Three Rivers Herb Society, and works for the board of elections during election season. You can find her at Roscoe’s polling station on election days. Jodi also began a regular clothing drive that supplies clothes to students in the River View School District. As for the farmers market, Jodi says, “I really enjoy meeting and talking to all the people shopping at the market. It’s great to meet new people with similar interests!” Summer squash is still going strong this season. Here is a tasty dish from allrecipes.com.
