This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

Couturier Pauline Bellamy’s experience on Marcus Garvey Day and the exhibition now on at Queen’s Park Gallery .
“Last Thursday evening, I got dressed up and headed out on my own to celebrate Marcus Garvey Day at Queen's Park House.
I started the evening off by taking in the visual arts exhibition at Queen's Park Gallery entitled "We Came On Merchant Ships - Rites, Rituals and Religion". Then, it was selfie time, in the midst of these amazing paintings.
The entire exhibition was outstanding but something about this painting was captivating. Thank you @art_of_deolivere for capturing this moment.
This is my friend and artist Juliana Inniss discussing her ceramic pieces on show at the exhibition.
The band Riteside Of Red was a whole conscious vibe. These are just a few of the artists that performed that evening.
I read a quote somewhere that said that women should spend a significant time alone and that it's important to know that you can do it all by yourself. Well I had an enjoyable time.I danced, ate lentil patties and drank rum punch.I saw some familiar faces and connected with some new ones too. Had some inspiring conversations and returned home feeling like a winner.
I've been wearing pieces from my sister's wardrobe since she had passed. The top was hers but I've had the mud cloth skirt for over 15 years. I shifted the front of the skirt to the side and yet another funky look was born.
I read another quote that said that wearing an outfit and looking exactly the way you imagined is one of the best feelings ever. From my experience as a fashion designer, I know, this is true.”
- Pauline Bellamy
The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is pleased to announce the exhibition
LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze, launched on 20 July 2023.
LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze is a powerful collaboration between five women artists working primarily in photography – Risée Chaderton-Charles, Jalisa Marshall, Joy Maynard, Amber Newton and Kia Redman.
Responding to the Historic Postcard collection of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the artists offer unprecedented narratives through original works, and critically engage with, challenge and dismantle the ways in which Black bodies have been objectified, dehumanised, and reduced to stereotypes through the lens of colonialism.
The artists invite us to reconsider the power dynamics at play in the production and circulation of images, and offer alternative visual languages of the Caribbean that center Black agency and subjectivity.
For more information, please contact Curator Natalie McGuire at info@barbmuse.org.bb or +1 (246) 538 - 0201.
Congratulations to artist Jeannie Taylor who has had 2 etchings accepted in the Original Print exhibition ‘Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers International Original Print Exhibition’ at Bankside, UK, in September.

Artist Dustin Harewood refreshed his mural in Britton’s Hill.
“A refreshed mural in the small community called Brittons Hill where my mother was raised. For that reason this was a very special project for me.
A gift to a very special neighborhood in honor and memory of my grans Clifton and Loraine White.
As usual with any public art there's the gift of the people that you get to see and speak with while working. I included pictures of just a few..”
-Dustin Harewood
The Sugar Imagined mobile mural popped up in Bridgetown at Golden Square.
The mural was painted as a moving backdrop initially for the official opening ceremony of the delivery of the last canes. Also, to be used for crop over events.
It was painted on 14- 4×9' canvases, making it easy to assemble almost any where.
Artists who collaborated on this are Shane Eastmond, Don Small, Christina Murray and Heather- Dawn Scott.

Congratulations to Mark King whose designs are in the permanent collection at The International African American Museum.
“The IMMERSION pieces take inspiration from workwear and traditional garments. The woven pattern is informed by the wrought iron garden bed frames found throughout Barbados.”
“Thrilled to share that @iaamuseum has acquired three garments from Enclothed Cognition @enclothedcog , my ongoing collaboration with the amazing Bregje Cox ( @noirnearfuture ). Our jacquard-woven IMMERSION kimono, shirt, and trousers are currently on view in the Atlantic Worlds exhibition. It’s an honor to be included in the permanent collection of an institution that celebrates the African diaspora through art and artifacts.

Sadly the 250 year old bearded fig tree at Andromeda has collapsed.
In turn I have asked if it can be reused and so have another life.
The “beards” can be used for wall hangings, basketry, art and more.
Andromeda says artists can come and gather for themselves.
I have also asked if any of the wood is any good for sculpture and when I hear back perhaps the wood sculptors can go and gather trunks and branches.

“
Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

‘Barbados Ah Come From' at Drift. Holetown.
Open Tuesdays to Saturdays 5 p.m until late. @driftloungebarbados.
“Barbados Ah Come From is a tribute to the beautiful island that I call home! Combining different styles and subjects I've added my unique take to a collection of "Bajan icons".
Hi! I'm Shara and l'm an acrylic on canvas kinda girl. I love chocolate and bright and beautiful things and I try to capture that beauty in my artwork. I believe that you can find art in everyday life and that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy something beautiful. I guess I'm on a mission to make art relatable, inclusive and accessible. I hope you enjoy Barbados Ah Come From!

“
Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry
