"In the creative economy, we are conscious that artistes of every type are not currently working or selling their art during this period, my government has developed a programme to buy literary works and serialise, or make documentaries or films of them. For the performing artists a series of concerts and shows with social distancing, will be sponsored by the NCF to ensure our performing artists. Similar programmes will be provided for the visual artists and crafts-persons. Our creatives must also live. • Culture will be seen first as a tool of development to reinforce identity and confidence in our people. That is why it is now located in the Prime Minister’s Office. It allows for synergies also with the task of reparations which has both a local and international dimension, especially at this time when the world has finally accepted that racism and anti-racism and unconscious bias, all matter and must all be confronted.“ (The Governor General's Throne Speech, 2020.)

CHRIS WELCH Chris Welch exhibition ‘A1 Chattel’ at the Gallery of Caribbean Art. Sept 21st - Oct 17th ”Machine Learning generated Barbadian chattel houses. AI Chattel is a model that dreams of Bajan architecture, connecting the past, present and future of these unique structures. AI Chattel bridges the gaps between art, technology, culture and architecture. Machine Learning (ML) is the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience. It is seen as a subset of artificial intelligence. ML algorithms build a mathematical model based on sample data, known as "training data", in order to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so.”

ANNALEE DAVIS Curator Pepe Baena Diví @pepeb.divi & artist Annalee Davis on Saturday 26th September for a walk through of Annalee’s studio at Fresh Milk, St George, from 10 am - 12 pm. Image from Annalee’s solo exhibition Re: wilding at @haarlemartspace in the UK. Photo credit- @willslater53

Annalee Davis’ display in the UK in Barbados Today newspaper. https://epaper.barbadostoday.bb Barbados-based artist Annalee Davis has launched re-wilding, her first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom at Haarlem Artspace in Derbyshire, which opened on September 12. Presenting a new installation commissioned by Haarlem alongside recent drawings and a largescale photograph, the works reflect on the rural, reconstructing meaning and connections. The exhibition is also part of re: rural - four contemporary artists un-learn and re-imagine the rural, which also presents the work of women artists Feral Practice, Deirdre O’Mahony and Pauline Woolley on the gallery’s new online platform Haarlem Periodical. Haarlem Artspace is in Wirksworth, a town with a radical political and industrial history in Derbyshire. In Haarlem’s interior and exterior spaces, Davis presents drawings, photographs and a sculpture inspired by the multi-layered history of the site where her studio is located, on a former sugarcane plantation.

The Wild Plants (2015) and F is for Frances (2015-16) series of coloured drawings function as graphic interventions into 1970s plantation ledger pages, where entries were primarily economic: registering wages, field activity and rent rolls, measuring rainfall and signing out agricultural implements to plantation labourers. The detailed drawings of wild plants with their root systems, and a former slave girl’s name drawn in found pottery sherds, counter the daily logging of plantation activity to offer alternate ways of reading the site. Outside the gallery is Davis’ new sculptural work, (Bush) Tea Plot – A Decolonial Patch for Mill Workers, which is a reversioning of an earlier (Bush) Tea Plot work, linking the industrial and colonial on both sides of the Atlantic, and exploring environmental resilience, regeneration and healing. A one-metre tall glass vitrine on a plinth is filled with limestone soil, 18th and 19th century clay and porcelain sherds, and plants that travelled to the Caribbean from the UK through colonisation and those indigenous to both places. Traditionally held to have medicinal properties, the plants were used in the brewing of bush tea, a now almost-extinct practice. Curator of the exhibition, Liv Penrose Punnett said: “It’s been fantastic working with Annalee and her drawings and new sculpture. It feels like it has really highlighted the cross Atlantic historical connections and shown audiences here the importance of the plantation in terms of our collective rural economy, the history of this and our relationship to it now.” The ideas in Davis’ works are further explored at Haarlem Online as part of re:rural- four contemporary artists un-learn and re-imagine the rural. The Haarlem Periodical includes: Annalee Davis Wild Plant Series, Sweeping the Fields, (Bush) Tea Plot - A Decolonial Patch for Mill Workers: Feral Practice Mycorrhizal Meditation & Homo Mycelium: Deirdre O’Mahony, SPUD, A Village Plot: Pauline Woolley, The Sky Calls to Me & Beyond the Celestial Sphere. Davis is a visual artist, cultural instigator, educator and writer, with a hybrid practice. She works at the intersection of biography and history, focusing on post-plantation economies by engaging with a particular landscape on Barbados. Her studio, located on a working dairy farm, operated historically as a 17th century sugarcane plantation, offering a critical context for her practice by engaging with the residue of the plantation. Haarlem is an artist-led studio and gallery space encouraging practice and research into contemporary art created in rural environments through residences, exhibitions and events. (PR)

BARBADOS NATIONAL ART GALLERY To provide dynamic, creative leadership in bringing the visual arts to the people, in order to facilitate their discovery, understanding and enjoyment of the visual culture of Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

barbadosnationalartgallery@gmail.com BNAG FACEBOOK PAGE https://www.facebook.com/barbadosnationalartgallery

NEW HOME FOR BARBADOS NATIONAL ART GALLERY The Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG) now has a place to call home. This announcement came from Minister with responsibility for Culture, John King, who revealed that after consultation with the BNAG, Cabinet agreed that Block ‘A’, The Garrison, would be reallocated to the Ministry as the permanent home for the gallery. A section of the Old Town Hall Building in Cheapside, Bridgetown, will also be made available for additional exhibition space due to its ease of access to pedestrian traffic. Minister King also indicated that a paper would be submitted to Cabinet detailing a proposal for a public/private partnership to undertake the major repairs and renovations, as well as the out-fitting of both buildings. The public, particularly the artistic community, has long advocated for a national gallery. Successive committees and boards of the BNAG have been working with Government, particularly since 2007, when the Barbados National Art Gallery Act was proclaimed, to make this a reality. Last Friday, members of the Board of the BNAG were on hand to witness the handover of the keys to Block ‘A’, The Garrison, by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Rural Development to Minister King. During this visit, it was noted that Block ‘A’ was in generally good condition, but transformation of the property, into a world class gallery space, would require significant investment to upgrade the building. The Ministry will be working closely with the National Art Gallery to bring this project to fruition, in the shortest possible time. paula.harper-grant@barbados.gov.bb https://gisbarbados.gov.bb/blog/new-home-for-barbados-art-gallery/

'It's such an inspirational place': Life in Tasmania an artistic inspiration for (Barbadian) Melanie McCollin-Walker By Guy Stayner https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-09-12/life-in-tasmania-inspires-melanie-mccollin-walkers-art/12654876

Flinders Lane Gallery (Australia) is pleased to present Melanie McCollin-Walker’s (Barbados) first solo exhibition with the gallery. Drawing upon a combination of memory, observation and emotional sensitivity McCollin-Walker’s evocative landscape paintings directly reference the beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness. Atmospheric, light-filled and intricate, her images resonate with a sense of calm and inward reflection. Exhibition is online and at the gallery from 11 August to 5 September 2020. Link in profile for full suite of artworks. Melanie McCollin-Walker began her artistic journey whilst growing up on the island of Barbados. Always the wanderer, Melanie has lived all around the world and it is this nomadic lifestyle, which has been the major source of inspiration for her work. Without the aid of photographs, she relies on her innate sensibilities using a combination of memory, observation and emotion. Subtle layers of paint are juxtaposed with bold and intuitive painterly marks and gestures. The landscape and in particular her signature stormy seas and skies, provide the framework within which the artist’s journey takes place. The resulting paintings are light-filled and dramatic. The essence of natural forces which she is able to capture on the canvas creates a sense of place, simultaneously evoking both mystery and curiosity. Each painting providing a window into her subconscious, while also challenging those viewing her work to delve deeper into their own. McCollin-Walker has been invited to participate in several solo and group exhibitions and was shortlisted for the Clifton’s Art Prize in 2013 and 2016, winning the People’s Choice Award in 2013. Her work is represented in private and public collections globally. https://www.flg.com.au/exhibition/light-within

GAIL RILEY Putting the almost-final touches on my minigama today, under the watchful eye of tutor Akyem-i Ramsay, who is apparently in love with the chimney. I was thinking today of all that we learned in this workshop, about new materials, new uses for everyday materials, building in this way, constructing a functional sculpture for firing in. It wasn’t a surprise that when the vision of my minigama came to me it reflected my preferred forms - generously curved volumes and an undulating lip, this time as the top of the chimney. Working with and getting to know our tutor and fellow workshop participants was great as well. A great bunch of people! Good vibes. Thanks again to the National Cultural Foundation - Barbados for running this. Please run it again! Lots of others want to learn. #claymonsteratwork #minigamalove #ilovethisstuff Follow me on IG for more on my journey with clay @touchedbyfirebarbados

CATAPULT | A CARIBBEAN ARTS GRANT Kingston Creative, Fresh Milk and the American Friends of Jamaica | The AFJ introduce CATAPULT | A Caribbean Arts Grant – a group of six new initiatives supporting Caribbean Creatives. These funding opportunities will increase the visibility of over 1,000 Caribbean-based artists, creatives and cultural practitioners to global audiences, provide much needed financial support, and develop the creative skills of our artists. CATAPULT will target participants living and working across the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish regions. This four-month comprehensive arts programme includes online events, art writing and journalism sessions, technical training, residencies and virtual discursive salons. CATAPULT is particularly interested in working with practitioners who are exploring the broad critical themes of Culture, Human Rights, Gender, LGBTQIA+, and Climate Justice from Caribbean perspectives and especially welcomes applications from those who do not have permanent employment at this time. CATAPULT will increase the capacity of Caribbean-based artists to navigate the digital space and learn new ways to connect with diverse global audiences. It will also promote the visibility of selected cultural practitioners by expanding online content from the region, enabling the region’s artists to engage wider audiences while contributing to the potential of earning beyond their borders. Gecko Getaway by Sue Trew When author and illustrator Sue Trew was asked by Carla Daniel from the University of the West Indies (best known for her work with turtles) and Isabel Vique from Fauna & Flora International to produce her next book about the Barbados leaf-toed gecko, she readily volunteered. With her Turtle Tracks Family series of books designed to inspire young environmentalists, Sue was enthusiastic to be part of a campaign - also involving the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification - to increase awareness of the island’s endemic gecko. In her studio at home, she worked on the project during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Sue enjoyed weaving facts about the gecko and about its plight, into a story, creating nocturnal illustrations and designing a plush toy of Gink, the story’s main character. The complete series can be found in her family’s Best of Barbados Gift Shops which she runs with her husband, Chris. Their airport location is already open, on-line shopping with local pick-up is available and their south and west coast locations will be open towards the end of October. www.best-of-barbados.com

The 2020 Studio Art Barbados Fine Arts Portfolio exhibition from Barbados Community College is online! https://studioartbfa.wixsite.com/antidote No exhibition this year, but that didnt stop us... Antidote, the 2020 Studio Art BFA Portfolio exhibition. Online now! Meet the latest group of BCC Studio Art final year students, see their work, learn more about the programme and our dedicated faculty. When the world gives you lemons... The Studio Art BFA programme culminates with a Portfolio exit review. The final year students present a cohesive body of work to their advisors and a guest external examiner. This assessment comes after a series of Advanced Studio courses in which they develop both technical and theoretical aspects of their practice. Finally, a curated exhibition of their best work is unveiled in the Morningside Gallery at the Barbados Community College. The global pandemic gave us an entirely new set of challenges. The programme was thrown into turmoil, but we adapted. The students and faculty found ways to continue. Separated from the studios, the students produced, installed and documented work in their own homes. Though far from ideal, courses went online and the final review was re-conceived as a series of video conferences. After all of this, it is with great pleasure that we present the 2020 Portfolio exhibition, reimagined online. As always, it is a curated selection of what the students have produced. We hope that Antidote will offer some needed relief from all that ails in this moment. But true relief does not come as a candy-coated sugar pill, this is not escapism. This antidote is about interrogation and reflection. If we seek change we must learn to look at ourselves, at how we encounter, construct and navigate our lives. Yes, some of the work has been inspired by recent events, but the thematic concerns were established long before. It is no surprise that the work feels particularly prescient, issues do not suddenly appear out of thin air.... those that look, see. -Ewan Atkinson

Therese Hadchity on the publication of The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism as Post-nationalism. “We talked to Therese Hadchity , the author of The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism as Post-nationalism. Focusing on the Anglophone Caribbean, The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde describes the rise and gradual consolidation of the visual arts avant-garde, which came to local and international attention in the 1990s. The book is centered on the critical and aesthetic strategies employed by this avant-garde to repudiate the previous generation’s commitment to modernism and anti-colonialism.“ -Purdue University http://blogs.lib.purdue.edu/news/2020/08/10/the-m aking-of-a-caribbean-avant-garde-qa-with-theresekaspersen-hadchity/

ARTIST’S STUDIO TOURS POSTPONED! The studio tours scheduled for February and March 2021 will now be November 13/14th and December 11/12th, 2021 “The world news regarding Covid-19 is unsettling to say the least and it does not look as though the virus will loosen its grip soon. Although Barbados has been spared so far, there is great uncertainty in the artist community and elsewhere. So it is with much regret that we have decided to postpone the studio tours scheduled for February and March 2021. Instead, we are planning to host the tours a little later in the year —November 13/14 and December 11/12, 2021— in the hope that we can host the tours in a safe and responsible manner. We will, however, continue to introduce you to the fine art and artisans of this island who have already been accepted to the 2021 Artists Studio Tour...after all, artists create all year round and need your support! So watch this space!“ -Artists Studio Tours

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit. Dan Rather
