VISUAL ARTS EVENTS BARBADOS on Instagram. @visualartsbarbadosevents Visualartsbarbadosevents The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott

ERIC BELGRAVE

The global pandemic has affected our lives in ways both alarming and profound. The struggle to cope with great upheaval and loss has come with revelations that were perhaps unexpected. The pandemic shone a glaring light on social and political inadequacies and failures, cracks in the systems that govern our lives. With trust broken, fact and fiction apparently rendered indistinguishable and dependability suspect or erased, we have watched keystones crumble and load-bearing walls fall apart. The artwork that surrounds you was created while turmoil held the world at ransom It is impossible to deny that the pandemic influenced every student as they set out to give shape and form to their individual concerns, while hindered by social separation and online schooling woefully inadequate for art education. Artists have always been driven to respond to the world they inhabit, often drawing the viewer's attention to alternate points of view, to things often unconsidered or difficult to knowledge. After facing challenges for years, it is no surprise that each of the artists in this exhibition has endeavored to uncover, reveal or pick apart pressing social concerns, for that is the way of their world, the pandemic, and where it has led us all. They too illuminate cracks in "The System" In each case the students refer to both the communal and personal ramifications associated with troubling societal norms. Destiny Dottin aims to make visible the struggle to manage mental health. Comparing plants dismissed as weeds to humans that exist on the peritery of society, Steffani Jemmott builds a compelling metaphor that brings social stratification into conversation with colonial taxonomy and questions of value. Jeriah Walcott sees a loss of individual creative expression in the decline of automobile personalisation and trend shifts in Barbadian architectural design. Donné Haynes asks us to consider that in being encouraged to "perform" cultural stereotypes for the benetit of the tourist economy, we sustain the commodification of Afro-Caribbean women and we all become little more than shallow entertainment for paying customers.

A final revelation: the title of this exhibition was actually inspired by a large crack in one of the walls of this gallery. This crack is no metaphor, it is a reality we have long been burdened with. A decade of financial neglect, disregard and bureaucratic impotence have crippled The Barbados Community College. With broken equipment and crumbling facilities, the Division of Fine Arts stands incapable of providing students with the education they deserve, that Barbados deserves. It is hard enough to operate in an island where art education has almost no value in our failing educational system. This is a disaster we continually try to bring to light, but in vain. We are literally falling apart. Governments past and present hail the importance of the creative economy in ignorance, misguidedly assuming that excellence is achieved magically, out of nothing Excellence cannot be achieved without education and practice. What you see around the college is not magic. Look past the fragile illusion that suggests all is well. We are not 'managing We are not 'getting by We will not survive. THE EXHIBITION STATEMENT: “A hunter-gatherer is a nomadic living a lifestyle in which most or all food is obtained by foraging (gathering edible wild plants), hunting and fishing, in the same way that most natural omnivores do. Hunting and gathering was humanity's original and most enduring successful competitive adaptation in the natural world…” Whilst this is considered a primal/basic life dependent process that seems foreign in our existence today, Hunt & Gather is paying homage to these early humans, and the way in which they lived. We may no longer be in a fast paced chase to survive, but the three artist have been on daily treks in and around their environments; to the art store, to the beach, hiking, village/neighborhood walks, in cities/towns, collecting items that have been discarded, rotted, washed-up, left-over-from, assembling, repurposing, archiving, zooming-in-on, finding-accidentally and exploring-further the topics and materials that are available to them. The survival today is to find something that will act as a translator for an idea to communicate to the viewer what is in the artist's mind. It was Oneka that best summed it up when she said… “We are hunting and gathering. Using what we found and making the best of it.” Adrian DaBudzman Burnett Full-Time Creative Photography of the art in exhibition by Sian Pampellonne

DENIS BELL Ceramicist. Machinist. Pioneer. Entrepreneur. Teacher. Advocate. Dean of The College of Old Iron. 24 April 1933 (Jamacia) – 21 June 2022 (Barbados) Denis Bell, an icon of the arts community joined The Eternals. Mr Bell is best known as the proprietor of Red Clay Pottery (later Fairfield Pottery) producing 100% Bajan souvenirs, utility items and clay for studio potters and schools. His giant clay pots were once a must-have garden item. He was a first-class machinist, and his skills were sought by manufactures and owners of heavy equipment as his “mcgyvering” kept operations running until genuine parts could be sourced. Mr Bell studied in England - ceramics at North Staffordshire Technical College now Staffordshire University, and art at Central School of Art and Design which was incorporated into Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design. Staffordshire is the home of famous ceramic labels including Doulton, Wedgwood and Twyford. He first came to Barbados as a 24-year-old to work at the Apes Hill Brick Factory. He expanded his reach providing technical assistance to the Greenland Clay Works to solve the problem of ‘blown tiles’. With Christopher Russell (Christopher Russell Pottery) he pioneered pottery from village cottage craft to commercial industry in Pelican Village. In 1970 he went home and in 1980 returned to Barbados. Recalling that Jamaica was in the belly of the IMF during the 1970s he returned to Barbados penniless, but piece-by-piece established Red Clay Pottery on family land, first processing clay for other potters including Courtney Devonish and BIDC, until eventually he had “a factory that refined its own clay, produced its own machinery, trained its own staff and a catalogue of 150 items.” With his son Peter he built all the clay processing equipment, production tools and kilns with materials salvaged from sugar factories, mechanics and the metal dump

During a good 40 years as Red Clay Pottery he moved the ceramic industry forward helping young people with technology, techniques in molding and kiln building. Hamilton Wiltshire (Hamilton’s Pottery), Winston Jean Paul (Highland Pottery) and Shaquille Hewitt (Banzai Workshop) are three of his ‘graduates’. He assisted Earthworks Pottery (before it was Earthworks) in its early days and provided technical assistance in Anguilla, Antigua, Guyana, Jamaica, Monserrat and Saint Lucia through the British Council in the Caribbean and Caribbean Development Bank. He designed the Saint Lucia Brick Factory and assisted it to acquire the equipment from the abandoned Apes Hill Brick Factory which he refurbished, shipped and installed. The factory remains in operation today. Mr Bell loved clay and was an advocate and activist for the ceramic sector pushing for a National Clay Reserve to standardize clay quality. The multiple clay deposits of varying properties require testing and experimenting every production cycle that causes much anxiety and trauma with cracking, breaking and revenue loss. He was involved in several trips to the Scotland District with government and quasi-government officials, returning discussions and much documentation – “lots of time over the years, and minister after minister” – and yet no national reserve. The facility he built at Fairfield, dubbed “The High-Performance Centre” by Akyem Ramsay, offered phenomenal production space for artists and in 2021 it was the creative hub for three of the works in Golden Square Freedom Park: “The Wall of Freedom” by the Ras Ishi and Akyem Collective, “Pelting Bare Big Rocks” by the Juliana Inniss Collective and the “Clement Payne” bust sculpted by Art Edwards and cast by Akyem Ramsay and Shaquille Hewitt. He was involved in all the works, discussing design and techniques and very much getting his hands dirty. He was appreciated and respected as the Great Teacher and Overseer by the artists. Denis Bell, thank you for journeying with us. Rest well. Condolences to his widow and seven children. Text and photos: Norma Springer

R.I.P. Denis Bell. Deepest Sympathies to his family and friends. DENIS BELL Denis Bell studied at North Staffordshire Technical college and Central School of Art London from 1952 to 1956 after which he came to Barbados as a production manager for Apes Hill brick factory. Later he would partner with Christopher Russell to create the Christopher Russell Pottery which would lead to the development of Pelican Village. He then left Barbados in 1970 and returned in 1980 to establish Red Clay Pottery a family pottery producing large vases, thrown ware, clay, kilns and technical support to local potters. Denis's mastery of his technical and industrial skills with his artistic ability has lead directly to the development of the local pottery industry.

“The Bathsheba Visual Arts Hub at the Andromeda Botanical Gardens is taking shape and will open sometime in July. The BVAH will Create, Teach, Earn. All welcome. Don’t miss it.” Peter Jan Boos The Bathsheba Visual Arts Hub Concept Paper Introduction “The Bathsheba Visual Arts Hub (BVAH) is an exciting new creative sector project that aims to support local artists by providing a venue for art courses that enable them to develop self-sustaining careers and provide a permanent place to exhibit their work. Set in the idyllic grounds of Andromeda Botanical Gardens in Bathsheba St. Joseph, the startup funding for this project is provided by The Peter & Jan Boos Family Foundation. The group of artists involved at this stage of the project, Sheri Anne Nichols, Steffani Jemmott and Joanne Reed, are working alongside Sharon Cooke, curator of Andromeda Botanical Gardens. Purpose ● to build the pool of creative artistic talent in Bathsheba by utilizing local, established artists; ● to develop the technical creative talent of the people involved; ● to develop the business and financial capabilities of participants so they are not only able to produce work of a high artistic standard, but can also use their work to develop a business that can financially support their families. Project Description Objectives BVAH’s vision is to develop a thriving business adding to the Bathsheba Experience and enhancing the lives of local people in the community. We have developed a new creative business model that encompasses and capitalizes on the ecosystem already in Bathsheba. Locals and visitors alike are already attracted to the area’s scenic atmosphere, its people, and its relaxing vibe. The location, Andromeda Botanical Gardens, exemplifies the biodiversity and connection of the region and by extension the island.

In addition, the BVAH will provide a new opportunity for the tourism industry as the growing market for experiences and engaging in learning whilst in holiday environments is becoming a popular concept. What benefits will the BVAH provide? ● the teaching of visual arts in the community ● creates an additional unique tourism attraction in Bathsheba ● an outlet for local artists to show & sell their work ● provides space for local artists to work and teach ● creates opportunities for children and budding artists in the area to learn about visual arts ● will attract more visitors to Andromeda Gardens and Bathsheba ● will help to promote and be a catalyst for visual arts development across Barbados ● will offer residencies for visiting artists ● provides a great venue for events We look forward to welcoming interested and budding artists to our initial courses commencing July 2022 and are very eager to see the development of this project and give a wonderful experience to all who participate.” The Bathsheba Visual Arts Hub Nature Themed Art Workshops Andromeda Botanic Gardens, Bathsheba https://m.facebook.com/bathshebavisualarts/ Based in Bathsheba, St Joseph, Barbados and spearheaded by the Peter and Jan Boos Foundation, the Hub is led by a team of local artists Sheri AnnMarie Nicholls, Steffani Jemmott and Joanne Reed. Jeena Chatrani Antilles Gallery. https://m.facebook.com/AntilleanGalleryofArt/ “Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art! My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online. I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling. With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.” -Jeena Chatrani

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather

Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression. OBJECTIVES of the NCF are: To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry Rodney Ifill, Cultural Officer Visual Arts 424-0909 ext.234 rodney-ifill@ncf.bb www.ncf.bb Annette Nias Cultural Officer - Film and Photography 424-0909 Ext 238 annette-nias@ncf.bb
