2018 Lipton Cup By Lipton Cup Chairman Steve Streifer
H
i everyone, it’s me again, Steve Streifer, and I’m pleased to announce the opening of our 2018 CYC Lipton Cup Pursuit and Fundraising Campaign!
This October will be the 104th sailing of the Lipton Cup Regatta, sponsored once again by the San Diego Yacht Club. In the interest of brevity (and also so that I have something interesting to write about in future articles), I will hold off on a history of the Cup for now. Suffice it to say, it is one of the major, annual sailing events held in the United States, attracting teams from some of the most prestigious yacht clubs (including … of course … our own CYC) from around the country; and we are honored to be invited to compete year-after-year. I’ve been asked by Commodore Eckenroth to chair the Lipton Cup Committee for a third year. Joining us again will be Jeff Jakus, responsible for publicity and fundraising. He will organize another sponsor recognition reception, repeating the very successful receptions of the past two years, in August. Also returning for a repeat appearance are Robbie Haines, who will work with the skipper and crew in training, development and tactics; and Jill Powell, who is instrumental in providing support for the crew as our campaign progresses. We’re very pleased to have Dave Hochart join us as crew leader and skipper, to work very closely with Robbie. Dave is stepping in for Jon Rogers, who did a fantastic job for the past few years, but who is stepping down to devote his full time to our great Junior Sailing Program; and for Patrick Powell, who also did a fantastic job as crew leader and skipper for the fast few years. Dave has been a CYC member for two years. He’s been actively competing in sailing events for twenty -four years. Dave began sailing competitively in Lasers as a youth sailor at the local level in California and throughout the United States in national championships. He attended University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he was a member of the collegiate sailing team and competed in the ISAF international match racing circuit. Dave currently competes in highly-competitive match racing and one-design keelboat events around the world. In addition to Dave, our crew this year consists of the following group of highly-qualified, experienced and dedicated sailors: Zack Maxam – Tactician; Pike Harris – Main Trim; Justin Bingham – Jib/Spinnaker Trim; Chuck Eaton – Pit/Strategy; Sterling Henken – Mast; Eric Bernsen – Bow. Many of these men are returning from prior Lipton Cup Regattas. What I think is exceptional about our crew every year is that most of them have come up through Jon’s Junior Sailing Program! They remain involved in our Club. Our success in the Lipton Cup is a testament to the Club’s success in developing great sailing talent. Now for the pitch! I believe that the Lipton Cup is a truly worthy endeavor for the reputation and prestige of our Club and as inspiration for our Junior Sailors. Mounting our campaign takes money: entry fee, damage deposit, chartering of practice boats, insurance, crew support, and so on. We rely on contributions from our members to continue to be able to compete in the Lipton Cup year-after-year, and we hope that your generosity will continue this year. You will receive a flyer in your future billing statement about the 2018 Lipton Cup Campaign, along with a slip that enables you to contribute through your monthly dues. Of course, you can also contribute through cash or check (made out to Coronado Maritime Foundation), or through a dues check-off slip, at the front desk. Your contribution is tax deductible. Any contribution of $150 or more will earn a handsome sponsor shirt … check out the members proudly sporting those shirts from last year and you won’t be able to resist! Last year we finished 7th out of 12 teams from around the nation. This year we want 1st … Please help us get there!
