CORNWALL, Ontario - The Tri-County Literacy Council celebrated literature and local history during the 50th Anniversary of International Literacy Day on Thursday, Sept. 8. To highlight Literacy Day and the Tri-County Literacy Council’s history, they invited Cornwall’ Little Historian to come and visit them from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sara was on hand to answer history questions from local visitor’s and was taught some new things herself. The Tri-County Literacy Council is housed in the former Rectory of the Trinity Church on Second Street West. Tri-County Literacy Council Executive Director Dina McGowan explained that the first minister of the church was actually an impostor and a fugitive on the run from the United States. The Literary Council wanted to open their doors on Thursday so people could come and learn their history and about the services that they offer. Beyond providing basic literacy skills, the TriCounty Literacy Council also provides daycare worker training, Microsoft Excel classes, healthcare worker training and above all they say, a connection to employment. “Our goal is to create a workforce that attracts employers to Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry,” McGowan said. The United Way is greatly involved in the work of the Tri-County Literacy Council and one of their success stories, Emily Grant-Gray spoke at the United Way 2016 Kickoff Breakfast on Friday, Sept. 9 to tell them about the impact the United Way and the Tri-County Literacy Council has had on her life.

CORNWALL, Ontario - All of the Tim Hortons’ in the Cornwall area, as well as the one in Lancaster are giving the money raised from the sale of their Smile Cookies this year to Rachel’s Kids. Rachel’s Kids support sick kids in the Cornwall an SD&G area. One such kid who has been helped by Rachel’s Kids is Kohen Paschek. 4 year old Kohen was home recovering from his fight with advanced brain cancer when Rachel’s Kids bought and built for him a special playe centre in his backyard. The play centre was specially designed so that it was more easy for Kohen to navigate. Kohen was not able to go out to other jungle gyms or play structures while he was recovering because his immune system was weakened by his treatment. “Giving the gift of play is the most amazing gift anyone could have given him,” said Kohen’s mother Jessie McDonald. Each smile cookie costs $1 and 100 percent of that $1 will go to Rachel’s Kids so they can help sick children in Cornwall and SD&G.
