Our News
to the New Year Edition of
2017 is here and we at Cornwall Care are looking forward to another fantastic year, full of engaging events and positive changes. Last year we welcomed some integral new team members, such as our new Directors, Dawn Matthews-Smith (Operations Director), Stephen Clague (Finance Director), lots of new Home Care employees and various new staff in our care homes. Several members of staff were also nominated for awards and Luke Bond, one of our Home Care Area Managers, won the Home Care Co-ordinator category of the Regional finals for the Great British Care Awards. Throughout last year we also asked our existing Cornwall Care employees what mattered most to them, updating our vision and values to take into consideration what we all felt was best about Cornwall Care. We were delighted with the amount of responses and how many of our employees felt cared for, supported and valued.
Within that time, we aim to be the company that people want to work for, delivering a transformational cultural shift to become the employer of choice. We will be financially sustainable, investigating new markets and new opportunities. We want to transform care, so our clients have the best days of their lives with us. We are also looking forward to the second year of our Cornwall Care Outstanding Staff Awards this Autumn, where we will be celebrating our wonderful staff and their incredible care achievements. From myself and the management team, we would like to thank everyone for their hard work, dedication and participation, and wish all our wonderful residents, clients and employees the very best for another great year to come.
From that research, we also announced our Five Year Plan, to be recognised as the provider of choice with world renowned services by delivering a new care model to our communities.

Cornwall Care is delighted to announce Philip Rees as our new Chairman of the Board of the most vulnerable people in our society.” Dr Alan Stanhope Philip Rees joined the Board of Cornwall Care as a Non-Executive Director in 2013 and started as Chairman on 1st January 2017.
Philip Rees has succeeded Dr Alan Stanhope, who has retired having served the maximum Cornwall Care tenure of 10 years as Chairman. He first joined the Board in 2006. “It has been a pleasure to be involved with Cornwall Care for almost a decade and humbling to witness the great lengths our staff go to every day caring for some
He has considerable experience at senior level, across a range of businesses including a 32-year career with a major construction, housing and property development company. He also owns and runs a small holiday complex in North Cornwall. “I am honoured to have been appointed by the Board to be the next Chairman. We strive every day to improve the lives of the people in our care and I look forward to working closely with our strong executive and nonexecutive teams to drive forward the vision and values of Cornwall Care.” - Philip Rees
Cornwall Care’s Donation
Employees are at the heart of the services Cornwall Care provide. Taking part in the Sunday Times Best Companies Survey gives our employees the opportunity to have their say. For the past two years, a commitment has been made to donate £1 to a chosen charity, for each survey that has been completed by a member of staff. This year we were delighted to elect Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust as our charity of choice, presenting them with a cheque for £447, to go towards the great work they do across the county. Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust fly more than 700 lifesaving missions each year, either treating individuals on-scene or transporting them to hospitals across the UK. Thank you to all Cornwall Care staff who participated.
A warm welcome to our new Assistant Operations Directors We are delighted to welcome Diana O’Hare, Len McMorrow and Jo Cauchi as our new Assistant Operations Directors. Diana, Len and Jo bring a wealth of experience and have different specialist areas which will help various services to develop and grow. We are sure you will join us in welcoming Diana, Len and Jo to Cornwall Care.

GOALS FOR 2017
• Creating and implementing a new 2016 was busy and full of changes. this work across each of our homes and are also excited to be looking into additional homes and services, such as more Supported Living flats. Wadebridge care village We want to lead the way in transforming care for Cornwall by creating high quality care villages that are designed with the future in mind. Our first project will be in West Hill, Wadebridge, where we plan on building a range of much needed extra care independent living accommodation, alongside a purpose-built care home, whose design and facilities will assist the team in delivering the very best quality local care. It is an exciting project that we hope to see underway this year.
New staff intranet This year we are working on the completion of a new staff intranet. This will be a portal for all employees to access important documentation and notices, as well as industry news and upcoming plans for Cornwall Care. We are still in the process of developing the service but are hopeful that this will be available for use this year. Our 21st birthday This year we will also be celebrating our 21st year of being an independent Cornish charity, with a variety of fun events and activities for our clients and staff. We will also be enjoying the Cornwall Care Outstanding Staff Awards for a second year running, celebrating all of our incredible employee achievements. Get ready for an exciting 2017! 5
OUR NEWS
HOMES IN THE SPOTLIGHT Over the past year we have made great strides in improving the look of our care homes, with newly refurbished bedrooms and some beautiful redecoration in our living areas. We have been updating and refreshing our homes, redecorating and refurbishing, as well as adding new bedrooms. We have added new bedrooms to Penberthy in Newquay, Trevern in Falmouth, St Breock in Wadebridge, Redannick in Truro, Blackwood in Camborne and Woodland in St Austell, and they look lovely. Cornwall Care has been through a lot of great changes in the past year or so, and we look forward to more to come. This is just the beginning of our drive to update our homes and become the care provider of choice in Cornwall. As well as updating the interiors of our homes, we have also been creating new spaces, such as family areas, sensory gardens and therapy rooms for our residents, their carers and their loved ones to relax in and enjoy quality time together. These areas are great for promoting independence and engagement, particularly for our residents with dementia, and they have been extremely well received. We have been delighted at the response to these changes and look forward to seeing more wonderful spaces added and updated throughout the coming year.

OUR EVENTS HOMES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Blackwood, Camborne Betty Oliver recently celebrated her 100th birthday at Blackwood in Camborne, where our staff made the day exactly what she wanted. Our staff at Blackwood put on a special day for Betty’s 100th, presenting her with cards and gifts. When Betty opened her cards, she was completely overwhelmed with gratitude and was very emotional. It was a very special moment for everyone involved. Betty was delighted by her telegram from the Queen and her gifts from the home. Turning 100 years old is the biggest birthday milestone any of us can hope for and Betty’s beaming smile says it all – it was a truly special day enjoyed by all. We wish Betty all the best for many more fabulous birthdays to come.
Trengrouse, Helston Residents and their loved ones had a wonderful time at Trengrouse on Valentine’s Day, where the staff provided a delicious three-course meal and decorated the home with lots of love-themed decorations. “Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful time on Valentine’s Day. It was clear that the staff put in a lot of effort to ensure that both residents and relatives had an enjoyable time. Mal’s cooking skills were brilliant and all the staff were very attentive to our needs.” Melanie, relative of a resident at Trengrouse “To the staff at Trengrouse, I just had to write to say what a lovely Valentine’s Day party you put on this year. It was such a happy time to see all the residents and relatives enjoying themselves. The staff dressed up the tables so well and the food and service were superb! Redannick, Truro Edna Barnes had a wonderful time meeting the Mayor of Truro over Christmas. Edna is well-loved by our staff at Redannick. They were delighted to see how she lit up when she was visited by the Mayor. A little bit about Edna: • Edna joined us in Redannick in December 2015 • She was born in Westfield, near Hastings • Edna married George at Westfield Church on May 11th 1963 • Edna and George had two daughters, Hayley and Tracey, and they all lived in a flat on Corris Brook Road, St Leonards • At first, Edna was a stay-at-home mum, before she became a dinner lady at Snowdown School. She also did cashier work for the Stade - a fun-fair business where they had a guard dog named Ben • Edna’s children helped at the fun-fair during holiday time and weekends • Edna’s family moved to Cornwall to

be near their mum who was diagnosed with MS • One of Edna’s favourite places is Malpas Park • Edna used to walk from Penzance to Newlyn • She loved watching the boats at Falmouth docks • Edna enjoys listening to music; her favourites are Nat King Cole, the Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis and Alfie Boe • Edna also likes to watch old movies
We had a wonderful time at Pengover in Liskeard in the run-up to Christmas, where we held a mince pie and raffle afternoon to raise money for our residents’ Amenities Fund. This pays for things like activities, entertainment and gifts for our residents. We were delighted to raise a total of £218.06 for our residents for Christmas. If you would like to support us by donating to our Amenities Fund please get in touch, we would love to hear from you. All donations, big or small, make a big difference to our residents.

OUR EVENTS HOMES IN THE SPOTLIGHT Redannick, Truro Our residents and staff had a lovely evening at Redannick when the Dean of Truro Cathedral came to visit us around Christmas. The Very Reverend Roger Bush, Dean of Truro, did a small speech and sang some carols with our residents and families. We had some mulled wine, mince pies and hot sausage rolls too. Everyone involved had a lovely time and it was great to see the Christmas tree lights switched on. We all wrapped up warm for it and even Santa came along! Our team at Redannick would like to thank the Dean of Truro and also Manuella and Debbie from Central Office, who came to support us and join in with the festivities.
Trewartha, Carbis Bay We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas. We had lots of great events and activities scheduled over the festive months and we really enjoyed decorating our home for the season. We would like to thank Di and Wendy for their hard work and compliment them on their nativity display. Our residents loved it and so did we! 10
Blackwood, Camborne Our residents and staff had a lovely time at our Christmas Bazaar held at Blackwood, where we enjoyed entertainment, stalls and some tasty Christmas treats. We had entertainment by Jumping Out and David Knightley, along with festive themed stalls, a raffle and some very yummy mince pies. We raised a total of £504 to go towards our residents’ Amenities Fund, which pays for things like entertainment, activities, decorations and gifts for residents. We would like to thank all the staff and families for their help and support, as well as the local businesses for donating the raffle prizes. We couldn’t have had such a great event without you. At Blackwood we hold regular fundraising events, raising money for our residents’ Amenities Fund. We like to put on lots of activities and events, as well as celebrate birthdays and special occasions, so every penny really helps. Almost all our events and activities are funded through raffles and tombolas like this and our team works really hard throughout each year to raise money to create fantastic experiences for our residents. We want our residents to have the best days of their lives with us.
Mountford, Truro A comment from Denise Trugeon about Christmas: “Christmas Day at Mountford has always been a lovely time to work but I felt I had to write this to say that in my 26 years of working here, this Christmas Day was possibly the best. From the moment my shift started the home was buzzing. Teamwork was second to none. To see so many smiling faces was wonderful. The home was filled with happiness. Thank you Mountford.” Denise Trugeon. 11
CHRISTMAS WITH CORNWALL CARE Christmas is a special time of year for many people. It is an opportunity to spend time with loved ones, celebrate the season and rejoice in the year that has passed. Across Cornwall, our care and nursing home residents have been celebrating with various festive activities and events, and employees of Cornwall Care have done a wonderful job, making our homes vibrant with decorations, lights, games and activities.
Some of our residents do not have family who are able to visit and for some residents it can be too stressful to travel, which is why Cornwall Care makes Christmas Day and Boxing Day that extra bit special. We have lots of interesting and fun events available, from carol singing and choir performances to Christmas raffles and nativity plays, so the festive spirit is never lacking in entertainment. activities such as Christmas card and decoration making. If our residents wish to get involved, we try our very best to ensure they can make the season their own special time. It is a great privilege for us to be able to spend Christmas with our residents and we are always grateful to our employees who work over the festive period. Many of our employees dedicate their time by working over Christmas,
