The Outdoor Issue Hello and welcome to your July edition of Cornfield M gazine. July is here already here! We have been super busy with our two magazines this month and we have some fresh new reads for July, including our cover story article from Winchcombe Farm. Home to three bespoke luxury holidays homes nestling in an idyllic area of outstanding natural beauty in the rolling Warwickshire countryside on the North East tip of the Cotswolds. We’ve also spoke to Suggs of Madness ahead of their summer racecourse shows, frontman Suggs talks about what makes them such an endearingly popular band. We take a look at David Walliams’ 2019 UK Arena Tour Grandpa’s Great Escape Live. Directors, Richard and Sam, had an action-packed day at Adventure Sports Activity Centre in Warwickshire, see their review inside. All of the above plus more can be found in this month’s issue.

Monthly Hair Care Column

With Celebrity Hair Stylist

Jay Birmingham Festival Hair Styles Festival season is my favourite season of the year! I love the use of bright, wild colours and the celebration of fashion and style that is a little more wacky than usual. I find the on-trend make-up and hair looks that appear during festival season are always incredible and inspiring. Festivals are all about big hair with lots of volume and that undone ‘chic finish’ which is why I predict that an off-duty model ponytail will be majorly popular amongst festival-goers in 2019. This look tends to work best on two or three-day hair - it is important to add some spray to add volume to the roots of your hair, before blow-drying when clean to ensure this style has lots of height and texture. Wave hair in different directions when clean to get a relaxed, beachy look - this will last for the first day or two of the festival - before tying into a ponytail. Add some texturising spray like JOICO Hair Shake to create volume and texture and backcomb slightly before tying hair into a ponytail just under the crown. Pull sections of hair loose around your face to give an edge, and then tie a piece of hair (about one inch wide) around your hair tie to cover this and give a sophisticated twist. If you prefer something a little more detailed, braids are always a win for festival season, with French, fishtail and Dutch braids being amongst the popular braided hairstyles. This year we will see more relaxed braids - pretty bow braids are certainly that! To create this look, start by taking a top section of the left hand side of your hair and with an elastic band secure it into a ponytail. In the top section that goes into the ponytail, make a hole with your fingers and take the ponytail and pull it through and under the hole. Next, pull out some of the top section of the hair to give it a looser effect. Then, take a section from the top right side of the head and merge this in with the ponytail, and repeat the same process. Continue down to the bottom of the neck and then secure with an elastic band to create a ponytail. Remember to relax and have fun this festival season!

In Review:

Solihull

Chiropractic Clinic

The Cornfield Director , Richard and Sam, visited Solihull Chiropractic Clinic following months of back pain and review it here: “I’ve suffered with back problems for years, but following a few months of severe pain, I decided to visit Solihull Chiropractic Clinic. I was booked in with David Evans DC MSC CCEP FCC FBCA, the Senior Partner at the Clinic. “David was completely professional, warm and welcoming. He explained the treatment I would be receiving and talked me through the process. Any questions I had, he answered them fully to make sure I was comfortable and felt relaxed. “On a visit to Solihull Chiropractic Clinic, it’s clear to see how experienced the team is. Degree-level training is essential for all chiropractors and therapists at the Clinic, so it’s reassuring as a patient to know you’re in safe hands.

If you feel you would benefit from diagnosis, advice and treatment from Solihull Chiropractic Clinic, or simply want to get in touch with a query, call 0121 744 6627, or email admin@solihullchiropractic.co.uk. 2 Northbrook Road, Shirley, Solihull, Birmingham, West Midlands, B90 3NT

“Since receiving my treatment, I haven’t suffered with back pain or problems, and I have been given exercises to perform should I ever suffer in the future. The advice and treatment I have received from David at the Clinic has been both successful and exceptional. I really recommend anyone suffering with pain or problems to book an appointment to see one of the team members at Solihull Chiropractic Clinic – it will give you a new lease of life!” - Richard Cornfield

“I am very active, and run a weekly fitness bootcamp to help participants to get fitte , as well as taking part in regular boxing training and sessions. Several months ago, I was suffering with bad back pain and was struggling to run my bootcamp sessions. I decided to pay a visit to Solihull Chiropractic Clinic after hearing good reviews. “I booked an appointment to see Senior Practitioner David Evans to see whether he could diagnose my condition and help to alleviate some of the pain. After a few sessions with David, my back pain eased significant y – I was able to take part in my bootcamp sessions, as well as continuing boxing training. “I have two young sons, so being able to run around and play with them is really important to me – I don’t want to be a father that can’t have a game of footie with my little ones on a weekend. The combination of my appointment with David, plus making sure I did the regular exercises he showed me how to perform at home, my back has really improved! “I know how to manage my back pain should I get any, and know how to prevent any injuries happening again when I’m exercising, boxing, or even playing outside with my boys. Solihull Chiropractic Clinic is a brilliant facility, with excellent staff, and I couldn’t recommend it more.” - Sam Fraser

Nothing is better than our own healthy teeth However, if they are lost, dental implants may be the answer Nothing is better than our own healthy teeth. However, if one or more are lost then dental implants may offer a way of replacing them to enable you to eat, speak and smile with confidence They may offer the following benefits • A fixed replacement of lost teeth without drilling down remaining natural teeth • An effective way of securing unstable dentures, particularly in the lower jaw • The prevention of bone loss which would otherwise occur after teeth are removed and could affect facial appearance • The implant systems we use are supported by scientific studies with proven long-term success

The earliest attempts of dental implants on record date back to 600 AD. Over the centuries various objects have been used to replace missing teeth ranging from pieces of shell, donated human teeth and gold but with, understandably, little success! However, in 1981 evidence showing the ability of bone to fuse with titanium was published which led to the birth of modern-day implants. Over the years their success and longevity have been supported by much published research. If you have missing or failing teeth or struggle with dentures implants may offer a solution. Paul Lowe is a surgical specialist and has a Masters degree in Implantology. If you would like to find out if dental implants could help you contact us to arrange a consultation. FASHION

The Best Trainers

for Every Summer Festival Scenario By George Sullivan, CEO, The Sole Womens

Because not washing for three days has never looked so fresh… For those of us counting down the days to ‘festival-season’, we all know how much planning goes into our outfits

Get a grip The UK has enjoyed some blistering heat waves in recent years but that doesn’t mean you’ll get lucky with the Great British weather.

While flower crowns and sequins are usually on the ‘essentials’ checklist (when else can you get away with dressing like a cross between a disco-ball and Frida Kahlo?), festival-friendly footwear is also a must.

There’s a high chance you’ll find yourself slipping and sliding in sludge and mud on the way back to your tent.

For one thing, the weather is always going to be unpredictable. One minute it’s boiling hot, the next it’s pouring with rain.

Sneaker saviour: Nike Air Max 95 The Nike Air Max 95 is not only an iconic style, which will get you noticed by festival fashionistas, it also has flex grooves in the outsole which supports natural motion and flexibility – even on the muddiest of campsites.

So you can look fleeky AF, The Sole Womens has listed its top ‘sneaker saviours’ for every festival scenario…

You want some rugged fl tform sneakers and a trusty treaded sole to keep you from face-planting at the end of the day.

It’s getting’ hot in hurrrrre The struggle is real when you’ve packed your most durable, water-resistant trainers and suddenly it’s hotter than the Sahara. Flip-flops at a festival are a definite nogo, with your feet subject to broken glass, burning cigarette butts and being stomped on by other over-enthusiastic festival-goers.

Standing in queues… all the queues… No matter how desperate you are to see your favourite acts, there will come a point when you need to eat, hydrate and pay a visit to the dreaded porta-loos.

Sneaker saviour: Nike Air Force 1 Sage Low Purple Taking both height and craft to new levels, the Nike Air Force 1 Sage Low features a platform midsole and a pared-down upper for a bold yet feminine look. Your foot is well covered, but the original AF-1 perforation pattern lets your feet breathe. This pastel purple colourway adds a modern twist to the all-white.

Going the distance Your Fitbit action will be off the chain over the festival weekends, as you have nothing but your feet to get you from A to B. Not only does this mean it’s important to break in any new trainers before you go, but you need a super comfy sole, that won’t rub and keep you blister-free. Sneaker saviour: Nike Sportswear Wmns P-6000 Described by Nike as ‘as mash-up of Pegasus’ past’, the leather, textile and synthetic upper of this trainer give you comfortable support all day long. The foam midsole also means your feet are cushioned - perfect for when you’ve lost your mates - and end up searching for them until the early hours… who needs sleep at a festival anyway?

These three things have one thing in common; queues. Everyone wants to look their festival best, but you also want a pair of comfortable sneakers, so queuing won’t ruin the experience. Sneaker saviour: Adidas Yung 1 trainers Crystal White clear orange collegiate royal Adidas literally describes this shoe as ‘built for all-day comfort’, because of its cushioned lightweight EVA midsole and breathable upper mesh. Bright blocks of colour and curved lines complete the ‘90s look.

Jumping is a low-impact activity that improves core strength (including stronger bones, better posture and increased leg strength); cardiovascular fitness and cognitive development in children (including coordination, mental strengthening, enjoyment and self-esteem). Regular trampoline exercise has also been proven to increase metabolic rate, helping the body process nutrients more efficient y and reduces the risk of osteoporosis by increasing the density of our bones. School groups are also encouraged to visit exclusively with special rates available for primary and secondary schools as well as colleges, universities, nurseries and home schooling groups. This is supported by a vouchers scheme when, every time a pupil visits they receive a voucher towards their school’s next trip. The more visits, the more vouchers! Rob Borg, Regional Manager, said: “We believe in getting children moving to support their physical and cognitive development. Trampolining is great exercise, which is the best way to improve concentration and memory. “Jumping alongside your classmates teaches persistence, improves self-esteem, effects learning success, develops motor skills and improves posture. It’s exercise in disguise!” And if you really can’t get enough jumping, organised sleepovers can also be arranged. JUMP IN tramplone park in Leamington has launched Rebound Therapy classes aimed at children and adults with autism or heightened sensory needs.

A range of optional extras can also be purchased for each child, including party bags, ice cream, popcorn, sweet pots and sweatbands.

He added: “Trampolines at our parks offer great physio benefits for those with low muscle tone who need to maintain/build their core strength. This is because trampolines encourage the participant to constantly correct their balance when jumping and landing, this also helps with co-ordination which has been linked to learning and neurological development.

The Crazy Glow Party adds some extra shine to proceedings with exclusive hire of the UV party room with special glow-in-thedark accessories provided. The 360-degree Interactive Dome Party includes 30 minutes of private ‘partying’ with surround sights and sounds on a film TV show or soundtrack of your choice as the perfect backdrop to a themed party.

The therapy forms part of inclusive relaxed sessions where those with special needs are encouraged to explore unassisted play with their families and carers in a safe, lower sensory environment. Trampolines are key to this specific type of exercise therapy which benefits those across virtually the whole spectrum of disabilities. It has been proven to provide a huge number of potential therapeutic and physiological benefits from cardio-respiratory, muscle tone and balance and posture through to perception and communication. Benefits that are more specific to autism include: improvements in calmness, focus, concentration, eye contact, memory, following instructions, motivation, self-esteem, confidence potential for learning across the curriculum, and happiness. Other benefits would be: reduction in tactile defensiveness, anxiety, agitation, shimming, rocking, self-harming, hitting, and anti-social behaviours. Rebound Therapy-qualified instructors are on hand to work either one to one or in groups after a full assessment of needs is carried out. Rob Borg, Regional Manager for Jump In, said: “Freedom to play and move unaided is often something that children and adults with special needs can be restricted on when participating in many physical activities. Trampoline parks can go some way towards offering more scope for unassisted play.

“Special needs schools and day centres have reported on how the trampoline has great benefits for autistic children and adults with heightened sensory needs. Bouncing on the trampoline can be very a very stimulating piece of play equipment for these individuals.”

For further details on parties visit: www. gojumpin.com/activities/trampolinebirthday-parties

Paul Kaye, CEO of ReboundTherapy.org (international body and training course provider for Rebound Therapy) said: “I am delighted to see so many trampoline parks introducing Rebound Therapy into their programme. By providing Rebound Therapy, trampoline parks are able to provide a much needed ‘fully inclusive’ service by offering sessions to learning disability care homes, special needs groups, schools and charity agencies and health groups.” The Relaxed sessions, which cost £7, run every Sunday morning at 9am and are free for carers. Assessments for the Rebound Therapy-specific session, with a qualified Level 2 Rebound Therapy practitioner, can be booked online at: https://www.gojumpin.com/activities/relaxedsessions

Cornfield Top Pick:

The Cheese Grotto

is the wine cellar for cheese

It’s the ultimate home storage solution for any lover of fine heeses. About the Founder Founder and Cheese Specialist Jessica Sennett invented the Cheese Grotto after working in the specialty cheese industry for 10 years. Jessica worked as a cheese maker in France and as a specialty cheesemonger in California, Massachusetts, and New York. She recognized there was no optimal way for fine cheese lovers to store cheese at home - many customers were throwing away high quality product after a week due to excessive molding or drying out of their cheeses. If storage and serving tools were available for wine and its requirements, why not cheese?

How Does the Cheese Grotto Work? Fine cheese requires a balance of humidity, airflo , breathability, and temperature in order to stay fresh. The Cheese Grotto is a humidor for cheese that uses a humidifying clay block, natural materials (bamboo and birch), and a ventilated back panel to create an ideal environment for cheese. Simply submerge the clay block in water for two minutes, place in the base of the Grotto, and the unit with achieve 70% humidity without cheese inside. Cheese can then be stored, unwrapped, on the removable serving trays and they will add their own humidity to the Grotto - bringing the whole unit to 80% or more in humidity which is ideal for cheese. In cooler climates, the Grotto can be stored on the kitchen counter (as the French do) for 7 to 10 days. For month long storage of cheeses, the Grotto is designed to fit the footprint of your refrigerator.

International Recognition In 2018, Cheese Grotto received a dairy innovation award by Agropur, the leading dairy cooperative in Quebec, Canada. The Grotto was tested in their dairy lab and discovered to be more effective than cheese paper. In 2019, Cheese Grotto has been recognized globally as the Best Equipment Innovation in Dairy by the World Dairy Innovation Awards.

The Ultimate Gift for the Gourmet Foodie The Cheese Grotto storage line is the ultimate gift for the gourmet foodie in your life. Keep your cheese fresher, save hundreds of dollars on cheese over time, and have a beautiful heirloom piece to showcase at your next dinner party. www.cheesegrotto.com Cornfield Magazine | 2

Dolce Caffe A taste of Italy in the heart of Henley-in-Arden. The Cornfield Directors, Richard and Sam, visited Dolce Caffe on Henley’s High street to review their Italian-inspired menu. “When we first entered Dolce Caffe, what was instantly evident was the cosy, relaxed atmosphere of the place. The décor is modern and unfussy, allowing customers to enjoy their food and drink in comfortable surroundings. “After ordering two fresh Lavaza coffees, along with the Italian meats and cheese board, we enjoyed the buzz of the venue and the delicious smells coming from the kitchen.” Richard Cornfield Dolce Caffe not only has an offering of delicious Italian dishes, but also serves Champagne and Prosecco for customers that fancy a little fizz With homemade cakes, snacks and pastries, this independent business certainly has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re ordering a hot coffee to take on your journey to work, or a rich meal of hearty Italian food in the evening with friends, Dolce Caffe can cater for you. “I loved my experience dining at Dolce. The food was particularly good - our meat and cheese platter was extremely filling and was filled with high quality, tasty ingredients. We watched our coffees being made freshly on the venue’s barista style machine, and had a relaxing, enjoyable meal. “I’d return to the venue in a heartbeat, and have already recommended it to my friends and family. If you’re in the area, you should certainly pop in to see the friendly team at Dolce Caffe and sample some of their marvellous plates and gorgeous coffee.” - Sam Fraser The reopening of Dolce Caffe this month marks a proud moment for its owner Roberto Cukaj, whose business marks his first UK venture since moving from Modena, in northern Italy, in 2016.

He ran his restaurant there for seven years after learning the trade since entering his first kitchen t the age of just 16. Now 41, he has made his home in Warwickshire with his wife and two children in Meon Vale, near Stratford-upon-Avon – and took over at Dolce Caffe earlier this month. (May) He said: “We had visited friends in Stratford before so we knew it would be a beautiful area for our family to settle and grow up in. “I spent a couple of years working for other bars and restaurants in the area but always looked out for opportunities to start another business. Henley is a lovely quiet community and I saw there was an opportunity to introduce some authentic Italian food and wine, so I decided to bring my experience of Italian cuisine to the community.”

New business grows

from foundations of the old

- New lodges being built on site of old nursery buildings which were forced to close - Expansion comes despite couple’s financial and health setba ks including pregnancy complications and heart attacks

WHEN Jo Carroll and Steve Taylor wake up to the picturesque view from their window each morning, they are thankful. Nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the rolling Warwickshire countryside, their neighbouring boutique glamping retreat has been one of the area’s best kept secrets – until now. Since word got out, demand is already outstripping supply for Winchcombe Farm’s three beautiful bespoke holiday homes in Tysoe. And following a busy first year of trading - and recent planning consent - work is now under way on two more luxury lodges, the first of which will open its doors to guests in the autumn. But, it’s been a long and emotional road to success for the couple who are happy to be marking an exciting new chapter in their lives. The holiday lettings business which was established last year, was not the entrepreneurs’ original vision. They were forced to make a change in 2017 following the financial collapse of their nursery business - after 14 years. Steve headed up a campaign following proposed changes to The Childcare Act 2016 which committed to giving families with working parents an entitlement to 30 hours of free childcare for three and four-year-olds. His petition to Stratford MP Nadhim Zahawi, warned that the resulting chronic underfunding for nurseries would render many of them unviable. Steve, 62, said: “It was heartbreaking to close the nursery but it came to a point where we didn’t have a choice. We were subsidising the running costs by £5k a month and our savings ran out; the business just wasn’t financial y viable any longer.

“The Government introduced 30 hours free childcare for parents in September 2017 and we were being paid less to deliver a service than it was costing us to provide. Warwickshire still receive one of the lowest funding rates in the country and even our local MP, who ironically is the Early Years Minister, couldn’t help us when we presented him with a petition with 6,000 signatures on from other nursery owners who found themselves in the same situation as us. “Having spent all our savings trying to keep the 80-place nursery aflo t, we took out a huge loan to open the holiday let business and crossed our fingers that it would work. We just had a gut instinct it would, and thankfully the gamble paid off.” But the couple have also had to overcome major health setbacks along the way. Steve, who carries out most of the building work on site, does so despite having suffered two heart attacks in the past 10 years - and Jo was hospitalised for 11 weeks following complications in her second pregnancy. But the pregnancies themselves came as a huge surprise as Jo had previously been told she could not have children. “I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and had resigned myself to the fact that I couldn’t get pregnant. I was delighted when I met Steve because he already had children and I didn’t feel under any pressure. “But then an ultrasound scan discovered that I had a 13.5lb ovarian cyst – AND that I was also 13 weeks pregnant! I had surgery to remove the cyst at 16 weeks and thankfully Will was fine. Her second surprise pregnancy, four years later left Jo seriously ill when she developed a blood clot on her lung and, at 20 weeks, contracted a dangerous condition called Pre-eclampsia resulting in the premature birth of Bob, at 31 weeks. He weighted just 3lbs. Today, two of the lodges stand as an affectionate reminder of their journey ¬they’ve been named Bob’s Lodge and Will’s Tree House. In their first year of the holiday lettings business Jo and Steve have hosted more than 600 groups from over 14 countries, with demand already outstripping supply. They now employ a team of eight full and part-time staff to help run the lodges, including three members of the original nursery team. “It eased the blow of having to make 25 people redundant when we closed the nursery,” said Jo, 48. “Our former nursery manager now helps out with the admin, our baby room manager helps with housekeeping and we kept on our maintenance man.” She added: “We believe the secret of our success is offering people affordable luxury in totally unique properties in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Having spent all our savings trying to keep the 80-place nursery aflo t, we took out a huge loan to open the holiday let business and crossed our fingers th t it would work. We just had a gut instinct it would, and thankfully the gamble paid off.

Cover Story: “We are truly blessed to be surrounded by a working farm and hidden away in a valley, surrounded by only sheep and cows. Lots of people come to star gaze due to the unpolluted night skies and we also have lots of guests who love the wildlife, including the couple’s ponies, a resident heron, woodpecker, badger, chickens and ducks.” It’s even rumoured that alpacas will soon be joining the Winchcombe ‘family!’ And the couple’s vision for the future is already taking shape with building work on the new lodges under way. The former nursery baby room is being transformed into a three-bedroom luxury lodge that sleeps between 6-8 people, including a geodesic dome or tepee on raised platform and spacious decking, plus private hot tub. Early plans for the second – and largest lodge - on the site of the nursery’s old garage extension, include four bedrooms and three bathrooms plus private hot tub. Will’s Tree House – originally converted from the former nursery forest school classroom – is also set for an expansion with the couple planning to create one of only a handful of treehouses in the country that will sleep six people. Steve said: “This is a huge project in itself, as it involves building a 30-metre-long bridge to a remote cabin and taking the roof off to replace it with a glass ceiling”. INTERIORS

The Local

Horticultural Centre Providing Therapeutic Care Stuart Bryan

Link Nurseries, based in Worcestershire, is well-known for its communityfocused attitude, providing therapeutic activities and vocational services for people recovering from physical and mental health issues, along with plant and produce sales. For all its appearance of a typical nursery, Link Nursery is far from ordinary. Since opening in 2016, the Nursery has been operating as a horticultural therapy project by the Warwickshire College Group (WCG) and run under the passionate guidance of manager Phil Woodhead. Situated in Powick, the NHS had previously run the Nursery, but when funding dried up, an opportunity arose for WCG to take over the project. Up until recently when an apprentice started, Phil had been the only paid employee and so relied heavily on Occupational Therapy students, volunteers and clients to share the workload out. This sense of collaboration and shared ownership leads to what Phil describes as, ‘We are one big family.’ Anyone can attend the nursery, but the emphasis is on people who are experiencing ill health and challenging social situations. One such person is Trevor Williams, who has attended the nursery for a year since being discharged from hospital with anxiety and depression. Trevor, who travels in two or three times a week from Worcester, was busy in the poly tunnel when I met him. ‘I’ve always enjoyed gardening and being outdoors and it has helped to meet new people and learn new skills’, explains Trevor. Insulating the Summer House is Kevin Leach, who enjoys similar benefits to Trevor by attending the nursery. ‘I love it here’, says Kevin, who has recently been diagnosed with dementia. ‘It gives me a break from my house and everyone here walks away feeling better by being in nature.’ Being outside and in nature is the key to horticultural therapy as Phil explains. ‘People come here and forget about their worries. They hear the birds and escape from the hustle and bustle.’ If people do need some even quieter time, nestled in the corner of the nursery is a designated ‘Quiet Garden’ for rest and reflection Much of the outside space at Link Nurseries is taken up by boxes, which are divided into 16 sections each growing a different vegetable or flowe . This constitutes the ‘Well Bean Gardening Club’ and runs alongside other groups for veterans, stroke victims, and residents at a school for Autism. A Flower and Plant Painting Club is also available.

Horticultural

Therapy Stuart Bryan

How gardening and plant-based activities can improve our mental health, encourage mindfulness, and allow us to connect with others. How can horticultural therapy enhance our wellbeing? • Looking after plants gives us a sense of responsibility. Caring for plants is a good way to learn to look after and respect other living things. • Horticultural therapy allows us all to be nurturers. Caring for plants can boost our self-worth if feeling isolated. • Focusing on the great outdoors can encourage us to be less insular, as it keeps us connected to other living things. • Tending to plants allows us to tap into the carefree part of ourselves so we are able to relax and let go. • Horticultural therapy releases happy hormones. Working outside increases levels of feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine and less of stress-related hormone cortisol. • We may become mindful by being more present and aware of our senses - the natural world reminds us of the cycles of life. • It allows us a time to feel in control. Organising beds and borders can be a soothing activity. • Horticultural therapy is easy. Start small and the basics can soon provide big results.

Link Nurseries is a special place where you can grow friendships, new skills, and confidence - as well as fresh produce! If you are interested in attending or supporting the Well Bean Gardening Club, please email linknurseries@wcg.ac.uk or call 01905 831881. David Walliams’ Grandpa’s Great Escape Live 2019 UK Arena Tour Comes To Birmingham The first ever stage adaptation of Grandpa’s Great Escape, the exhilarating number one bestselling children’s book by actor and comedian David Walliams, is to tour UK arenas this Christmas. The live version of the kids’ favourite, which has sold over two million copies around the world begins at Arena Birmingham on 23 December. Grandpa’s Great Escape Live follows the acclaimed television film which aired on BBC One in December 2018, and will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sean Foley (The Catherine Tate Show Live & The Painkiller). Grandpa’s Great Escape is the eighth book by Walliams and was published in September 2015 by HarperCollins Children’s Books David Walliams said: “Grandpa’s Great Escape Live is an incredible new development for the book. We’re not just turning it into a live show, but into a spectacular live arena show for all the family this Christmas. Being in arenas means we can have a life-size Spitfire a tank, the London landscape and a dramatic escape from the Imperial War Museum. It’s great because we can really go to town with all of those elements and this story demands that scale. I’m delighted to be involved with this arena tour of Grandpa’s Great Escape Live, working with fantastic people like the director Sean Foley and Kevin Cecil, who’s written the script. I couldn’t be more excited about it!” The wonderous stage design for Grandpa’s Great Escape Live will see arenas around the UK transformed into London and its landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and the River Thames, from thousands of feet in the sky, as Grandpa’s life size Spitfire soars through the air. The set has been created by entertainment architects Stufish Productions (Beyonce & Jay Z, Madonna, The Rolling Stones). The script adaptation of the book has been written by Kevin Cecil (Little Britain & Gangsta Granny television film) Grandpa’s Great Escape, which has been translated into 39 languages received a wealth of glowing reviews with the Evening Standard declaring Walliams as “the new Roald Dahl”, while The Times describe the story as “a beguilingly funny, original and thought-provoking tale… hilarious”. Many years ago, Grandpa was a World War II flying ace. But when he is sent to old folk’s home Twilight Towers – run by sinister Matron Swine – it’s up to Grandpa and his grandson, Jack, to plot a daring escape. Little do they know, the wicked matron is on to them. Adventure

Sports

Popular outdoor activity centre goes from strength to strength A POPULAR outdoor activity centre is continuing to expand after nearly three decades in Warwick – and it realises a lifetime ambition for its founder. Adventure Sports was established at a 100-acre site at Wedgnock Rifle Range in 1990 by Steve Richardson from Leek Wootton who was already running Paintball and Clay Shooting on neighbouring land that he was farming. Since then the number of activities have grown to more than 50 including Mixed Activity events, Karting, Junior Karting, Clay Shooting (including 20 and 50 Shot Experiences for novices, Lessons and an extensive Sporting layout, Sportrap, Skeet and DTL for regular shooters, Quad Bike Trekking, Mud & Mayhem, Axe Throwing, Hovercraft, 4x4 Taster Sessions and Safaris, Rally Karts, Powerturn Karts, Reverse Steer Jeeps, Archery, Segways, Digger Driving, Treasure Hunts, Junior and Compact Paintball, Pistol and Rifle Target Gallery, as well as a vast selection of Team Building Activities. Steve said: “Thirty years ago I had been looking at ways of diversifying from farming and when I saw the rifle range land had gone up for sale I quickly realised that it was the ideal venue for me to expand my business. I had already been running Paintball for three years – it was the first Paintball site in the Midlands actually. Then I introduced clay pigeon shooting and it grew from there, gradually adding more driving activities such as 4x4 Off Road driving, Quad Bike Trekking, Tank Driving and Karting.” An Advanced Clay Pigeon Shooting Association Instructor, Steve heads up a small and proud team who organise and deliver hundreds of events every year, catering for corporate team events and stag and hen parties as well as family groups and children’s parties. He said: “The name of our company Adventure Sports, tells you everything you need to know. We live and breathe adventure and we aim to give the best experience. “We all love our jobs and offer amazing activities that leave you breathless and give you a sense of accomplishment that will last a lifetime.” “I am immensely proud of how adventure sports has evolved over the years. Our main assets are our friendly and hugely experienced staff who we are always being complimented on, and our 100-acre purpose-built outdoor activity centre that allows us to provide so many different activities.”

He added: “Quite a few of our corporate activities involve team working in a fun way, including full- and half-day packages designed around: Tradition and Targets - Country Pursuits; Speed and Safari - Adrenalin Driving; Challenge and Champion – Team building. Adventure Sports offer a wide range of fun activities ranging from Off Road Karts, Reverse Steer Jeeps, Digger Challenge, Quad Bike Trekking, Hovercraft, and Segways, through to fun Team Building Challenges. Mixed Activity Events are designed around the customers’ needs. The team can take Team Building activities to other event sites around the country. (Subject to prior inspection) The new Kart track, which opened earlier this year, boasts a fleet of 14 fast and powerful twin-engine 400cc Biz Le Mans Karts, fitted with state-of-theart electronic De Haardt safety systems and Tag Heuer timing. There is also a fleet of 200cc Biz Junior Karts, with full safety cages and harnesses suitable for ages 10 and upwards, including adults, so ideal for family parties! Members of The National Karting Association, the site offers three different karting packages: Have-a-Go - Race against the clock - ideal for individuals and small groups (1 to 12 people); Grand Prix - perfect for groups of friends or corporate events (8 to 36 people); Endurance Racing - the ultimate team-building corporate event (12 to 72 people). Adventure Sports is also the only site in Warwickshire to offer the new, and lesser known, addition to its activities menu - Axe Throwing. Here, groups of between two and 24 people are taught how to throw axes at wooden roundel targets, introduced first to the basic techniques using a small 10-inch metal axe called an Angel from a distance of three metres before progressing to the larger Tomahawk axes from a longer distance of six metres. Each session ends in a scored competition. And Steve is quick to dispel any fears surrounding safety. He said: “A lot of our corporate clients had been increasingly asking about Axe Throwing so we looked into it more seriously. But we’ve done a lot of research and expert training and it is one of the safest in the country with the way it’s run. All you have to be able to do is throw and we help with the rest. It’s a lot of fun, particularly when you’re watching couples do it!” For further details about all the activities available, visit: www.adventuresport.co.uk/karting To discuss corporate events call 01926 491948.

Adventure Sports Directors of Cornfield Publishing, Richard and Sam, had an action-packed day at Adventure Sports Activity Centre in Warwickshire like no other! After hearing about the outdoor activity centre, Adventure Sports, Richard and Sam were desperate to head over to Warwickshire for a day of intense competition.

Supported by Mercury established as the World’s most authentic Queen Tribute, Garry Pease as Rod Stewart and local bands Killglass & The Clause. This year also reveals a second stage hosted by HedKandi as part of their 20th Anniversary Tour, featuring Sandy Rivera, Stonebridge, Alison Limerick, Mark Doyle, Andy Norman and many more artists. Exclusive VIP tickets are available and include entry in to the VIP area, which includes a VIP garden, VIP bar (plus cocktail station), luxury toilets and Gold Circle access to the front of the stage. Festival Director Terry Runcorn said: “Come along and experience all the fun and excitement of a festival on your doorstep! It’s fantastic to think we are now in our fourth year and are becoming such a popular fixture in the local and wider music festival entertainment scene.

“We always try to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy – and this is promising to be our biggest and best Solihull Summer Fest yet!” For more information visit our website or pop into our High Street shop in Solihull www.solihullsummerfest.co.uk

With over 29 years’ of experience, the owners of Adventure Sports really know how to deliver an exciting day of events, games and activities. Offering clay pigeon shooting, axe throwing, driving unusual vehicles, race karting, paintball, archery, hovercraft experiences, and more, it’s fair to say the Cornfield Directors were thoroughly looking forward to their visit. First testing out their hand at axe throwing, Richard and Sam were given an intense lesson on how to safely throw an axe into wooden roundel targets. Feeling like Vikings, Sam and Richard were taught basic techniques before practicing hitting a target at close range. The real fun began when the lads were given Tomahawk axes to throw – and certainly their competitive sides came to the surface! “The experience was amazing. I’ve never thrown an axe before, and it really got my adrenaline pumping. You feel safe at all times with experienced instructors, and learn the difficult techniques behind wh t seems like an easy task. It’s harder than it looks!” – Sam The Directors then headed out on an exciting racing experience on the karting circuit, driving twin engines 400cc Biz Le Mans karts fitted with state-of-the-art electronic De Haardt safety systems. The guys loved racing, and highly recommended the activity for big groups or corporate events. The final event of the day was clay pigeon shooting – a qualified instructor showed Sam and Richard how to handle the equipment, before allowing them to aim and fire at the rabbit clays! With expert tuition and support, and lots encouragement, the Directors thoroughly enjoyed their experience. “I was clearly the top shot at the clay pigeon shooting experience. It’s the kind of activity you never really get the chance to have a go at, so to be given thorough advice and training by such knowledgeable instructors was incredible. I highly recommend it!” – Richard To book a group activity at Adventure Sports, or for more information, head to: www.adventurespot.co.uk

Suggs An Interview with

of Madness

Fronted by the charismatic Suggs, Madness’ ability to write songs that sparkle with the stuff of British life, that find poetry in everyday reality, has lead them to have many hits including Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, Driving In My Car, Our House and House of Fun. Ahead of their summer racecourse shows, frontman Suggs talks about what makes them such an endearingly popular band. What are the qualities that make Madness endure? I think the reason we endure is that we genuinely do enjoy ourselves. From the very beginning you could see the joy in the early videos we made and hear it in the records. The fact that we were friends before this band started is key. I genuinely think the whole spark or art of craft and creativity was a by-product of our friendship. I think that’s what people feel. It’s a genuine experience. It’s not manufactured. I can’t ever remember being onstage and feeling fed up with the people around me. It’s been very fl ttering and marvellous to see so many different age groups enjoying the band. We are looking forward to this on the tour – people of all ages. How will you keep yourself match fit for the summer shows It’s like preparing for war, a war of fun you know? A war of fun and frolics but unlike the Romans, we are going to unleash heaven. I have a suspicion that if I didn’t have a few tequila shots before I went onstage I wouldn’t be quite as lubricated in the joints. Tequila and orange juice is the secret of keeping those limbs loose! I suppose our rituals are now so ingrained that I don’t notice what the rest of the band are doing. Traditionally, we don’t tour for months and months - we gave up on America and they probably gave up on us. Touring for years on end is what drains the lifeblood out of a lot of acts that I see, so each tour we do we try and make unique – and special. We can change the set-list nightly if we wish, the main thing is to keep it exciting for yourselves, that’s the way to ensure the audience is kept excited too. Racecourses make up quite a bit of your itinerary, are you fond of a flutter or a day at the track? Racecourses are great we’ve played a few in the past where they have been a few races and then you get a bit of Madness. It’s an unbeatable combination. I have a few flutters every now and then and have a bit of luck on the horses.

I’m not a gambling man generally but I like it when you can see the steam coming out of the horses’ nostrils and that whole thing in front of you. I do like it but I’m terrible loser, which has been my saving grace as far as gambling is concerned, as it’s stopped me getting too involved. I did wake up with a greyhound in my bed once. We had been to a charity auction at Walthamstow dog track and there was an auction for the greyhound and we won. I came home with a greyhound, which my wife was quite thrilled about. He did all right actually, we called him Nutty Boy and he went on to win quite a few races. That was quite a nice time and the nearest I ever got to be an Alex Ferguson-esque racehorse owner. Turning up at the track as a dog owner was quite an experience. I really look forward to all the racecourse shows. Catch Madness at Wolverhampton Racecourse on 30th August 2019! Grease

The Musical

Comes to Birmingham Hippodrome this August! By Roz Laws

It’s going to be electrifying! Get ready for a fresh take on one of our favourite musicals. The show about to start a UK tour, including Birmingham Hippodrome for two weeks in August, is the first new production of Grease in 25 years And while the fantastic songs and story remain the same, expect this version to be young, dynamic and bold. The two (so far) unknown but talented leads look like they could still be in high school. Sandy is less of a sappy walkover than we remember from Olivia Newton-John’s sweet character. And there’s an underlying grittiness to the plot and setting of urban Chicago. Audiences can also look forward to an authentic 1950s feel, thanks to new choreography from Strictly star Arlene Phillips who has researched the dances of the era. Flying in for most of the Birmingham performances will be Peter Andre as Teen Angel. Producer Colin Ingram says: “This is Grease for a new generation – fresh, relevant, vibrant and young. “Grease has become a little bit stale but this is an opportunity to refresh it. “If you’ve seen Grease before, come back and see the show you love in a completely new and exciting light. “It’s still got the wonderful songs but this is not a karaoke version. It’s about telling the story and putting the grit back into Grease. We’ve given it an edge which will work better with a modern audience. “The show is a timeless story about growing up and falling in love. I believe we have found a complete star in Martha Kirby, who hasn’t even graduated yet.” Martha, 22, says: “My Sandy has more of a backbone. Our generation of women are strong-

minded so we’ve brought a modern take to it.” Danny Zuko is played by 26-year-old Dan Partridge, who says: “I am obsessed with Grease. It’s a joke with my friends how much I love it. It was the first show I was in, playing Danny at 12 with a leather jacket that was too big for me.” He’s looking forward to coming to Birmingham for some Summer Loving, and making better memories than his only “disastrous” trip to the city. “I was stuck in Birmingham one New Year’s Eve after I missed the last train. I was working in Hereford and caught a cab that cost £90. Then I left my wallet in the taxi.” Teen Angel sings Beauty School Drop-out to Frenchie, with the message – don’t drop out of school – that’s particularly close to Peter Andre’s heart. He’s telling it to his own children and it’s a lesson he was taught by his father when he won New Faces in Australia at 16 and was offered a record contract. Peter, 46, remembers: “I was the happiest person alive, but Dad was very strict and said I had to stay on at school. “I was panicking, thinking they would back out of the deal but they waited for me to finish Then my first job was opening or Madonna. “Dad would say ‘You want that prize at the top of the mountain? Get climbing’. Now my kids see me at the top and don’t understand about

Jump Trampoline Park climbing. But I tell them they have to do well at school and put the effort in.” Making his musical debut in Grease is a dream come true for Peter. He smiles: “I loved the film Grease, I must have seen it at least 15 times. That, along with Back to the Future, are my two favourite films If I could have a time machine, I’d go back to the 1950s. “At school I dressed like the Fonz, with a leather jacket, white T-shirt and blue jeans. “Now I get to fly in on wires as Teen Angel. I haven’t told them yet I’m scared of heights! I’ve never sky dived or bungee jumped. But I’ll be fine I hope.” Peter is missing some of the performances due to other commitments. But he may be returning to Birmingham more regularly if an investment goes through. “I love Birmingham, in fact I’m thinking of buying a property there. I think it’ll be a gold mine when they’ve built the new high speed train line. I’ve been talking about it with my wife Emily. “When I think of Birmingham I think of great curries and loyal fans. Some of them still wait outside the hotel.” Pete has four children – Junior, 13, and Princess, 11, and Amelia, five and two-year-old Theodore with doctor Emily, 29. His eldest two have grown up in public but he tries to keep his younger two out of the limelight, which has recently meant some explaining. “Amelia had never seen me on stage but I took her to the cinema to see Thomas the Tank Engine, as I was the voice of a car called Ace. She could hear my voice and was really confused. How could Dad be a car? “Then she said ‘People at school asked me, is your dad Peter Andre? Are you? How do they know you?’. I didn’t know what to tell her but I said ‘I’m friends with everyone’. It is a weird thing.”

Jump Trampoline Park brings the outdoors in! With open jump, dodgeball, air bags, a foam pit, tumble tracks and more, it’s the perfect place to host a children’s birthday party this summer! The award-winning kids trampoline birthday parties on offer at Jump Trampoline Park are the best in the area, with VIP packages, amazing themed rooms, and added extras available!

The Cornfield Review Our Director Sam booked Jump Trampoline Park for his little one’s birthday party and sung his praises for the venue! Sam booked the Crazy Glow Party for his son, which included a safety briefing an hour to enjoy the venue’s fantastic activities, time in the private party room, an awesome party host, as well as pizza and hot dogs for all the children attending! Sam said, “The party hosted at Jump Trampoline Park was incredible! All of the children had an amazing time, and it was great to see them fully entertained and having lots of fun together. “The team at Jump are brilliant - they are professional, welcoming and make sure everyone is safe at all times which is great news for parents. I highly recommend booking children’s parties at Jump - my little one hasn’t stopped talking about it!” Jump In and check out the fabulous party experiences available online now at: www.gojumpin.com

Teen Angel’s halo is fitting for nice guy Pete. But there is one thing that brings out his devilish side – food. “I think food is such a joy. I exercise a lot so I can eat whatever I want. What’s my favourite food? Everything! There’s nothing you can put in front of me that I’d say ‘no thanks’. I love it all.” Grease runs at Birmingham Hippodrome from August 13-24. Doves, Johnny Marr

and The Coral

to Perform at Birmingham

Inner City Live 2019

Doves, supported by Johnny Marr and The Coral, are set to play a summer show at Birmingham Inner City Live taking place at Perry Park, Birmingham on Sunday 28th July 2019. One of British music’s rare treasures, Doves’ reputation as a committed and consistent albums band is gilded by timeless singles including ‘There Goes The Fear’, ‘Pounding’ and ‘Black And White Town’. Doves promise a superb night of entertainment. Be sure to get your tickets for a perfect summer’s evening. Support for the Birmingham – Perry Park show now includes Johnny Marr and The Coral, plus more to be advised.

Johnny Marr Recorded over nine months in his new studio and HQ just outside Manchester, ‘Call The Comet’ is a vivid, immersive, brilliantly evocative record, which develops the music explored on its two predecessors – 2013’s ‘The Messenger’, and ‘Playland’, released in 2014 – and adds a new emphasis on atmosphere and drama. In response to our confused, fretful times, many of its songs look to ideas of an alternative society and utopian futures, while retaining an all-important openness and sense of mystery. Most obviously, the album is also full of the pre-requisites of compelling music, which Marr understands as a matter of instinct.

The Coral The Coral’s past speaks volumes having sold over a million UK albums since their debut EP release in 2001, five of those hitting the top ten, including the chart-topping ‘Magic and Medicine’ and eight top 40 singles. Without so much as a glance over their shoulder, James Skelly (vocals/guitars), Ian Skelly (drums/percussion/vocals), Nick Power (keyboard/vocals), Paul Duffy (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Paul Molloy (guitars) stride into the future to fortify their indefin ble position in modern music. There are no full stops in The Coral’s story, but their return with a seventh album, ‘Distance Inbetween’ in 2016 turns a distinct new page within it after an unapologetic five year hiatus. Picking up the band’s story from the release of 2010’s Butterfly House, theirs is a tale of uninterrupted individual creativity punctuated by the surprise release of their lost album, ‘The Curse of Love’ in 2014. Suzuki Swift Attitude 2019 UK review By motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay - Twitter @carwriteups Instagram @tbarnesclay

Suzuki’s Swift is a good seller for the Japanese automaker. And now it hopes the latest Swift Attitude will boost sales even higher.

And even though the cabin is awash with plastics and the steering column doesn’t have reach adjustment, it offers a lot for just £14,599. Certainly, for this amount, the Suzuki is a sensible second car, or it could even serve as the main car for a small family.

The special edition model is anticipated to account for up to 40 per cent of all Suzuki Swift sales in Britain during 2019 and beyond.

Fast Facts (Suzuki Swift Attitude 2019 • Max speed: 111 mph • 0-62 mph: 11.9 seconds • Combined MPG: 51.4 mpg • Engine layout: 1242cc 4-cylinder petrol • Max. power (PS): 90 • CO2: 124 g/km • Price: £14,599

The £14,599 Attitude is centred around the mid-spec SZ-T grade but includes a slightly sportier body kit, a new spoiler, a mesh grille and 16-inch alloys. However, where the standard Swift SZ-T trim houses a 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit, poke in the Attitude come from a non-turbocharged 1.2 Dualjet powerplant. This has been harvested from the basic SZ-3, driving the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission The Attitude’s engine may sound a bit lame in comparison with a turbo assisted one, but it’s still a fun, nimble hatch to drive. This is because the car only weighs 980kg and has a short wheelbase. The Swift Attitude is forgiving, too. You can chuck the little tyke into corners at the last second without any worry that the Suzuki might have a tantrum. Indeed, the car almost enjoys being driven hard. Of course, the Attitude is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a seriously engaging supermini – if burning along twisty rural lanes is your thing. Mind you; its off-theline performance isn’t quite so exciting. A zero to 62mph time of 11.9 seconds isn’t going to mean you’ll be changing your underwear any time soon. The Swift isn’t unacceptably underpowered, though - its light weight helps with this; you just need to stir the gears hard and keep your right foot down to feel the speed. The car is also economical, returning over 50mpg on an average run. When it comes to ride quality, you’ll find the Swift Attitude comfortable, for four-up.

E-cycling is it time to switch up the gears

on traditional bikes?

The Cornfield Directors review their experience testing out one of The Electric Bike Shop’s most popular products. After opening the second branch of his Electric Bike Shop at Hatton Shopping Village in Warwick, entrepreneur Karl Haden was keen for us to test out the e-bikes on offer at his store. Having never previously ridden an electric bike before, Directors Richard and Sam were unsure what to expect from the experience. “I always felt e-bikes were a slightly lazy way of getting around, and didn’t require half as much effort as a regular bike,” admitted Sam, “that was before I tested one out for myself.” The truth is, as our Directors found out, that electric bikes aren’t a way to ‘cheat’ exercise, but can actually be adjusted to suit the needs of the individual rider. Power levels can be turned right down for riders wanting a bit of a workout, whilst those that prefer a little extra boost need only amp up the power. Electric cycling is certainly legitimate exercise, and can be used as part of a workout routine. Richard commented, “I can see how these bikes would benefit riders that have previously suffered with an injury – because of the adjustable power settings, users can find the right level for them and even continue to cycle after going through something like physio without pushing themselves too hard.” Sam also noted, “I’m not an experienced cycler, and sometimes I’m put off getting on a bike because I don’t want to encounter any difficult and steep hills. With an electric bike, I’d be able to ride up hills and still complete moderate exercise. When riding the e-bike, my joints were under no pressure and I really enjoyed the experience.” The Electric Bike Shop encourages customers that haven’t tried e-bikes to hire one before purchasing, and owner Karl is more than happy to give first-time users advice and a helping hand in the selection process. If you’re inspired to test out electric bikes and think they might be for you, pop in to The Electric Bike Store at Hatton Shopping Village and give it a try - the Cornfield Directors strongly recommend you do so! Look at

Wimbledon By Alex Dudley

The third Grand Slam of the season comes from Wimbledon, and it’s the one that all the main players target at the beginning of the season. The historical event is always a special occasion with hundreds of thousands of fans grappling to get tickets to see their favourite players. Those that are unfortunate in getting tickets are still able to go to the All England Club for a day out. The competition is the only one of the Grand Slams that is played on a grass surface, and is the top prize that has been competed for since 1887. Again, this year it will take place over two weeks spreading across June and July.

Men’s

Wimbledon is renowned as a place where legends are made, and that is highlighted when you browse down the past winners of the competition. Players such as Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Fred Perry have regularly won during the Open Era. But, no player comes close to the dominance that Roger Federer has achieved at Wimbledon. Away from Federer, players such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will also be prominent in the field Djokovic will be looking to add to his four Wimbledon wins and repeat his feat in 2015 of successfully defending his title. Nadal, on the other hand, has disappointed at Wimbledon in recent years and hasn’t won the competition since 2010. However, he will remain as one of the main contenders due to his recent exploits in the French Open. The home fans will be hoping that Andy Murray will be fit for the competition after undergoing surgery following his first-round defeat in the Australian Open. A return to Wimbledon for the Brit could see him given a chance to equal Fred Perry’s record of three Wimbledon championships.

Women’s

While the men’s title has been a hard fought battle between three or four players, the Williams sisters have dominated the women’s side of the competition. Since 2000, 15 of the 18 finals have included one of the sisters, with 12 of them being won by either Serena or Venus. Serena Williams will have one eye on the all-time record; currently the star is the only American currently two titles behind Martina Navratilova. The champions from 2014 and 2018 will also be prominent in the Wimbledon field with Petra Kvitová and Angelique Kerber looking to add to their title successes. French Open champion Ashleigh Barty will be looking to add a second Grand Slam success to her CV. Meanwhile British semi-finalist from France, Johanna Konta will also be hoping that she is among the contenders come the second week. Naomi Osaka will round off the leading challengers, as the 21-year-old will be looking to win her third Grand Slam title. However, Serena Williams remains the woman to beat as she searches to get her hands back on the famous trophy for the first time in three years 62 | Cornfield Magazin
