CRAFT MATTERS

Passion for crafts makes a great partnership A passion for crafts has led to a partnership between a leading Plymouth artist and a popular city centre cafe. Make at 140 Vauxhall Street in the Barbican is run by Lizzy Evans and as well as being a cafe offers haberdashery, modern fabrics and making kits for sale. It also offers a diverse programme of workshops for all ages every week providing inspiration for experienced crafters, as well as encouraging beginners to try something new. After the success of her button shop Funky Poppy, Lizzy Evans opened Make in November 2015. Funky Poppy has moved into this new space, so customers can buy beautiful fabrics and buttons at the same time. Now a partnership has formed between the crafting haven and Plymouth based lino printer Jan Brewerton. Lizzy Evans explained: “When I met Jan, we discovered that we share a passion for crafts. I love the detail and contrast that Jan creates in her prints. It really makes them stand out. It was an easy decision to display them at Make and now our customers love them as much as we do. “What we’d like to do is keep Jan’s work on display and exhibit the work of other local artists and crafters across the year. Not only does this enhance our café, it also helps to profile the many talented artists who live in and around Plymouth.” Jan Brewerton, who lives and works from her studio in Plymouth and exhibits in galleries throughout the country, said: “All the pieces on show at Make at 140 Vauxhall St are

inspired by knitting and sewing, subjects very close to my heart. It is lovely to have my work on show in this fabulous new venture and to know that they are being seen by other knitters and craftspeople.” Make at 140 Vauxhall St is located next to Sutton Harbour, just a few minutes from the historic Barbican in Plymouth. Visitors can see a selection of Jan’s lino prints and treat themselves to a coffee and a delicious homemade cake while they are there.
