A Note from Dr. Stowell Meeting alums of this university everywhere I go is a great blessing. I love to hear the stories of long-lasting Cornerstone traditions like enduring friendships, deep life-forming encounters, romances turned into years of shared journeys and the impact of faculty members that have imprinted lives indelibly. They are stories that matter. I also like to find out which Cornerstone alumni have graduated from. Whether you hail from GRBBI, GRBBC , GRBC, CC, CU or GRSBM – you’re part of the family! It reminds me of my niece, who has changed her name quite a few times. It’s kind of hard to keep up, but regardless of what we call her she is still the same wonderful person. Similarly, Cornerstone has been known by many names, but it’s still the same us! We continue to graduate individuals who distinguish themselves in the marketplace, the church and at home as they impact their worlds for Jesus. Our alums continue to build lives that matter as they transition from academics to their callings. What a great enterprise! I’m personally glad that God, in his grace and providence, brought you here and we get to share in your story. Treasure the memories, hug the friends you met here and pray for us – that we are able to create an environment where our students thrive as they become well educated, culturally savvy, devoted followers of Jesus who will influence our world for the Kingdom. All the best…

Joe

alumni Involvement

1 How did you become the person you are today? Whether you graduated one, five, 10 or 25-plus years ago, you are a different person today than you were in college. And most likely your growth directly correlates to the people and experiences in your life, with one or more of those people being influential during your college years. Just like you one, five, 10 or 25-plus years ago, the longings and hunger of current CU students have not changed. They too desire another person’s presence and life experience. The Sojourners mentoring initiative is designed to partner alumni with current students interested in having a fellow sojourner walk through the school year with them. Ideally you’d meet on campus every other week for an hour at a mutually agreeable time. We’ll connect you to training and resources to help make your relationship a success. Contact Christine Mutch, associate dean of discipleship, at christine.mutch@cornerstone.edu to complete a Mentor Profile. Pictured: Andrea Abrahamson (B.A. ’10) visits on campus with the student she mentors.

Alumni Board We are in the process of forming an Alumni Board, comprised of alumni who will prayerfully and strategically advise and advocate for alumni relations and offer alumni influence at the university. Join us in prayer and submit nominations to Darci at darci.irwin@cornerstone.edu.

It was great to see the excitement in the school community and the Men’s Basketball team. Winning the championship this year brought back those great memories of the ’99 championship. This team was very similar in character, leadership and Godly discipline. As far as my interaction with the team, I had the opportunity to share my testimony and a little bit about my recent battle with cancer while challenging them as they started WHAC tournament play and ultimately the National Championship play.

feature stories GRTS Spotlight: Craig Johnson (B.A. ’82; M.Div. ’87; Th.M. ’02)

Craig jonson recently began a new position at Grand Rapids

Theological Seminary as director of the Kern Foundation Scholarship. The Foundation awarded GRTS $1.5 million to distribute as scholarships for students pursuing a Master of Divinity degree. Here’s a little more about Craig:

Cornerstone University Alumni Journal

Build A Life That Matters

Since graduating from Cornerstone University and GRTS what have you been doing? My wife, Dorothy, and I worked in the Philippines with SEND International from 19902010. During this time we were involved in church planting among Filipinos, as well as leadership development through theological education and mission administration. Why were you interested in working with your alma mater? The Lord has given my wife and I a rich history with Cornerstone University and GRTS. We are both graduates of the undergrad program, and I have completed two degrees in the seminary. In addition to this, we worked with the school in various positions (recruiting, resident directors in Pickitt dorm, WCSG) prior to going overseas. Because of this, we have a long-standing love and appreciation for the school. In addition to this, I deeply value theological education. Working with GRTS provides a wonderful opportunity to contribute to Christ’s church by promoting the theological and ministerial development of those serving in church leadership. What will you do in your new role as it’s the first of its kind at the seminary? The immediate focus of my role is to recruit spiritually mature and gifted students for the Master of Divinity program – students who

are heading for senior pastoral ministry. We are planning to enroll eight students in this program this fall. Over the next five years we are trusting the Lord to bring 52 new students into this program. The Kern Scholars Program provides an unusual opportunity for young adults heading toward pastoral ministry. Those who qualify will receive significant funding toward their seminary education and enter into a relationship with the Kern Family Foundation, which has the potential to bless them in their ministry well beyond their years of education at GRTS. In addition to this, the program speaks powerfully to one of our values as seminary faculty and administration – assisting students in acquiring graduate theological education without incurring additional educational debt. Beyond this, the school and community will benefit as these young adults settle in and make contributions as students and as ministers-in-training in West Michigan. What goals do you have in the new position? My primary goal is to see spiritually gifted students invest themselves in GRTS by participating in the Kern Scholars Program – with a view toward maturing theologically and spiritually, as well as growing in their fitness for pastoral ministry.

ohn thompson serves as discipleship pastor at Armitage Baptist Church, a multicultural church with 37 nationalities represented in the inner city of Chicago. He has authored two books on urban ministry and teaches seminary classes on the topic He met his wife, of 40 years, Deborah, while she attended Cornerstone from 1968 – 1970. They have four grown children and 12 grandchildren for whom they set aside every Thursday calling it “Grandpa and Grandma” day.

Cornerstone had a great impact. First of all, numerous professors like college professor Joe Crawford taught me doctrine in a very practical way. In seminary Dr. Victor Matthews did the same thing in Theology that Professor Crawford did. They fed my soul and helped me learn how to live the Christian life. Dr.

www.cornerstone.edu/alumni

At first I was going to be a child evangelist because I thought I could never minister to adults. Then with growth I decided to be a minister of christian education. I served in this capacity in two churches and also in a missionary agency.

The absolute best way to “Build a Life that Matters” is by passionately obeying Christ’s greatest command to “make disciples.” This has been my driving force for 37 years. I have had the joy of discipling many men and training them to do the same. Four of the men I discipled are now serving full time on staff at my church. These men come from a variety of ethnic groups, have been at different educational and professional levels of life, from being a county judge to the other end of the spectrum of being a former gang leader in Chicago’s largest street gang. God is amazing. If we will set our heart on following His great command he will empower and use us in ways we have never imagined. We can have amazing impact on eternity.

How did you plan to use your degree?

How do you incorporate your education into your daily ministry?

Cornerstone University Alumni Journal

About a month after my salvation I began to sense God’s call on my life, applied and made plans to go to the only school I knew of as a young believer, a school that my new church encouraged me to consider. I am so glad that even in my ignorance, God sent me to a good school that could disciple me and guide me in my preparation. CU had a profound impact on my life.

Ron Chadwick gave me a vision and burden for discipling people, which has been the cornerstone of my ministry for 38 years. For the past 12 years I have had the joy of following my passion as Pastor of Discipleship at Armitage Baptist Church in the inner city of Chicago.

What factors played into your decision to attend Cornerstone University?

PGS Spotlight: Joanna Schrecengost (M.A. TESOL ’10) J

14

Cornerstone University Alumni Journal

Build A Life That Matters

oanna Schrecengost, a native of Taylor, Mich., has served as the director of English as a Second Language (ESL) services at Angel House since 2008, a ministry in the heart of the Yemeni community in Dearborn, Mich. She and her husband, David, currently live in Lathrup Village, Mich. She attended Cornerstone University from 1996-99 and completed her degree at Rochester College in 2007 in organizational leadership. Why did you decide to attend Cornerstone University and what did you intend to do with your degree?

Can you tell us how you find yourself “Building a Life that Matters” in your daily routine or activities?

I searched for a university with an intercultural communications program because that was my main interest at the time. I researched the programs that Cornerstone had to offer because I knew Cornerstone’s reputation (from previously attending) and the quality of education that I could expect. I had no idea what God had in store for me when I entered the TESOL program. Looking back, I can see how God led me back to Cornerstone so that I could be of use to him at Angel House.

I work at “Building a Life that Matters” in baby steps. Each day I get a fresh chance. What can I do today? How can I serve God’s purposes in my life today? How can I meet my students immediate needs? What can I do right now to improve their lives? What can I do to better equip our volunteer teachers to teach our current program? How can I follow the path that God has laid out for me today? It’s in these everyday small moments that the real work is done. It’s impossible to predict what tomorrow brings, but if you do everything you can right now eventually you can look back at the bigger picture and see what you’ve built, or more accurately what God built.

How did the education at Cornerstone prepare you for your current vocation? What part did the university play in where you are at today? I came into the master of arts in TESOL program at Cornerstone knowing nothing about TESOL - not a thing! I had no knowledge, no experience, nothing but an idea and a calling to love and serve people of other cultures. Now, I facilitate a vibrant and dynamic English Language Program in the heart of the Yemeni community in Dearborn, Mich. Many of my students come from situations where they received little to no education in their home country. Many never learned to read or to write in their native language. There are many challenges teaching in this setting. I was called to love and serve in this community and Cornerstone provided me with the knowledge, the experience and the confidence to succeed. Everything that I do in my career on a daily basis is based on what I learned in the PGS TESOL program.

What were some of the most impactful events during your academic career at CU? Why? The Oxford Study Abroad Program through Cornerstone in the summer of 2009 has to be one of the most impactful Cornerstone-related events for me. To be at Oxford University, studying with a professor, like any other Oxford student, was unforgettable. It really gave me an added confidence being able to face the challenge and then see exactly what I could accomplish. I knew then that if I could do that academically -- there were many other things that I could do. I’d like to someday earn a Ph.D. and my Oxford experience gave me the confidence to aim higher. I also met my best friend at Cornerstone on my first day in Pickett Hall in 1996. We were roommates and we are forever friends.

pictured: Joanna Schrecengost teaches in the Yemeni community in Dearborn, Mich.

My Life at CU

Favorite Professor: Hands down, of course, Dr. Pasquale. He is incredibly intelligent but very humble. He’s a good man, and he’s been a great mentor to me. Best memories: A particularly memorable night that involved on-campus fireworks (literal fireworks). During the TESOL program one of my favorite memories was going to a TESOL conference in Boston with my good friends and fellow alumni Lisa Waite, Aubrey Goddell, Rachel Schrotenboer, and Zoe Lindsey. All five of us shared a teeny tiny waterfront hotel room. We were squeezed in like sardines but had so much fun together. Favorite CU Food: I worked in food service during my undergrad years, so I’d have to say that my favorite food was anything that we made in the back that didn’t make it out to the front. I was the Sunday night pizza cook for several years and sometimes we’d make some crazy combinations for the workers to eat.
