Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp

Year 10 Outdoor Education students accompanied by three teachers Miss Emily Bartholomew, Mr Joel Liddicoat and Mr Matt Schirmer and three old-scholar assistants Cooper Hough, Renee Hein and Sarah Howe embarked on their 3-day hiking expedition to the Flinders Ranges on Wednesday, 11 May. One group began their hike at Mambray Creek, another at Melrose and the final group departing from Alligator Gorge. Students travelled approximately 40kms across the three days carrying all of their belongings in their rucksacks including tents, sleeping bags/mats, food/water, cooking equipment and clothing. For most students, this was their first real experience of hiking and camping where they were completely reliant on using only the items they had packed. Students developed their leadership, collaboration, navigation, campcraft and their perseverance through some of the more challenging sections of walking. Below are some quotes from the student’s experience: Best moment of camp was….. “Was walking in to our first campsite after a challenging first day of walking up a hill”- Eleanor “Just talking to people I usually wouldn’t and finding out how funny some people were”- Lucy “When I realised I finished the 20km day and seeing the view from the battery”- Lachy M “Getting to camp and setting up the camp and cooking a good meal”- Ruby “The views and the lookouts”- Jenny Something I learnt was…. “When you spend three full days with a new bunch of people, you get to see sides of people that you wouldn’t normally get to see and get to know them better”- Henry “It does get easier to pack a rucksack when I began to work out where everything went”- Lucy “How to lead the group and ensure everyone stayed together”- Alex “How to navigate using a map and compass”- Jamie “Never underestimate the map (it’s bigger in real life)”- Raphin My biggest challenge was… “Staying patient with others when I was tired and sore”- Dylan “Having no choice but to keep going”- Ruby “Climbing up the steep hill and pushing myself to keep going and get over them” - Raphin Emily Bartholomew Health, PE & Outdoor Education Learning Area Leader
