LAISH

PAUL LIDDELL

Friday 23 May 8pm FREE, with support Laish is the songwriting project of Daniel Green. Daniel writes original songs with honesty, pathos and humour and has a voice that is rich and frayed, accompanied by hypnotic fingerpicking and strummed guitar. A prolific performer, last year he played at some of the best music festivals in the country including End of the Road and The Big Chill, and gained support from Marc Riley, Tom Ravenscroft and Mojo Magazine.

Friday 20 June 8pm FREE, with support Cornerstone has championed Paul Liddell for the past three years and we are delighted to welcome him back. A prolific musician, Paul has released three albums and he gigs extensively. His songs are heartfelt and catchy, and are delivered with his distinctively gentle yet powerful north eastern voice. Through use of live sampling Paul creates beautiful layered vocal and guitar harmonies to create a sound much bigger than you would expect from one man. CORNERSTONE PRESENTS

SIXTH ANNUAL BEER AND MUSIC FESTIVAL Friday 1 to Sunday 3 August FREE ADMISSION The Cornerstone Meadow returns! This year’s festival has the biggest and best line up to date. Confirmed acts so far include local bands The August List, Reuben’s Rocket and Duchess with the amazing MAIA headlining on Saturday night. No muddy fields, no overcrowding, no hugely expensive tickets just three days of FREE music and the best local beers, ciders and food.

GALLERY AND VISUAL ARTS. FOR A RELAXING MOMENT DROP IN TO OUR FREE ART GALLERY. Each season offers something special with an eclectic range of artwork, craft and photography from local and national artists. There’s always something to enjoy, and much of the work is for sale at affordable prices, including jewellery and other crafts. OPEN EXHIBITION: PORTRAITS 1 May – 1 June

Cornerstone’s annual open exhibition is a feast of art displaying the skill and imagination of local artists. This year, entrants have explored the theme of portraits, so come and see how they have interpreted this traditional subject. The exhibition is part of Oxfordshire Artweeks, for more information see www.artweeks.org. On 6 May from 6 – 8pm all those who entered Cornerstone’s Open Exhibition, and those who are part of Artweeks (South), are invited to a free networking event and talk from Matthew Wright (below). Meet fellow artists, see new work and find out about local opportunities.

MATTHEW WRIGHT: THE FARRIER 26 April – 1 June

As you are passing by Cornerstone’s west side Window Wall do take a moment to stop and enjoy fine art photographer Matthew Wright’s compelling installation which captures the quietly timeless work of a farrier. Through racing yards and private stables, beautiful horses and English landscapes, these moving photographs explore the textures, colours and fabric of this ancient craft. A unique view of rural life today is seen through the exquisite and diverse scenes captured by Matthew’s camera. This exhibition is part of Oxfordshire Artweeks www.artweeks.org.

OXFORD SCRIBES: WRITE ON! 6 June – 6 July

Celebrating the diverse beauty of letterforms, the calligraphic society Oxford Scribes mark its 30th anniversary with an exhibition of work by its members. Artists range from internationally known professionals to beginners, who explore both traditional and contemporary interpretations of calligraphy. Exhibited will be 2D works of brush and pen on paper and vellum, as well as pieces made using more unusual and unexpected tools, surfaces and structures. Check our website for details of special events including demonstrations and opportunities to have a go at fine writing techniques to discover your own hidden talents!

SAMANTHA WADHAM: INTERIOR GROWTH 10 July – 16 August

Multidisciplinary Didcot artist Samantha Wadham interprets textiles through different materials and media, including paper, painting, film and 3D metalwork. Interior Growth recreates floral imagery to explore how society views the working class not as blossoming beauties, but as disregarded weeds that cause damage to the garden, or world. Giving a contemporary twist to the humble wallpaper pattern, this is an exhibition that will inspire and intrigue.

APRIL – MAY EVERYTHING YOU EVER NEEDED TO KNOW EVER (AND SOME EXTRA STUFF) FAMILY COMEDY If you like Comedy Club 4 Kids, you’ll love this. Funnyman Tiernan presents an hour of very silly comedy for children and adults. MARK STEEL’S IN TOWN COMEDY: STAND-UP Mark Steel is a big favourite at Cornerstone and he loves to talk about Didcot, using a picture of it as the main image for his Independent magazine article. The ‘In Town’ show is based on the Radio 4 series where Mark writes a show based specifically on an individual town. There’ll be pictures, ranting, and people calling things out. And of course, Didcot audiences will be much better than any of the others on the tour! Fri 9 May 8pm £15, £13.50 (concs)

1001 NIGHTS FAMILY THEATRE Nominated for Best Production for Young People in the Off West End Awards, and brought to us by Transport Theatre (As You Like It) and the prestigious theatre for young people, the Unicorn in London.

pipes into enchanted telescopes and even a mop into a magic carpet! Compelling and funny, and perfect for everyone aged 6 and up. One hour long so home in time for bed and some wonderful dreams! ‘If this doesn’t warm your heart then I don’t know what will’ A Younger Theatre ‘An utter delight’ The Telegraph Sat 10 May 6pm £8, £6 (concs)

MARK GRIST: ROGUE TEACHER COMEDY: STAND-UP This year, millions watched an ex-English teacher defeat a teenage grime artist in a rap battle. Mark Grist was that teacher. Mid-recession, he quit his teaching job to embark on a series of challenges, leading him to become ‘an internet sensation’ (Sun) and ‘unlikely heart-throb’ (Guardian). He became Poet Laureate of Peterborough in 2008, Chief Bard of the Fens in 2009 and Edinburgh Fringe Slam Champion in 2010.

This show is a comic story of his life and how he got to this point – through stand-up poems. He recounts touching words about inspiring young people, and then some very unsentimental ones about the revolting things schoolchildren can get up to! His poems are fluid, clever and funny, his delivery crisp and his self-deprecating persona endearing. A great show to come to with or without your own teens, this is a like an hour and a half with the teacher you always wish you’d had! Fri 16 May 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs), £10 (under 16’s) Ages 13+ (strong language)

FORMBY THEATRE If you liked Morecambe and Eric and Little Ern, then Formby is for you. This beautiful one man show follows George Formby’s rise from awkward stable boy to one of Britain’s biggest stars. Ewan Wardrop plays Formby and all the key characters in his fascinating life, and brilliantly performs the classic hits live. It’s a funny, touching play about an essentially ordinary man with an extraordinary talent. ‘Wardrop mesmerises his audience’ Three Weeks Sat 17 May 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs)

THE RUTLES: WILL BE APPEARING AS THEMSELVES MUSIC Icons at Cornerstone! They started as a spoof of The Beatles but were so popular that they became an actual group to great acclaim, recording, touring and topping the charts. Originally created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes for the comedy sketch show Rutland Weekend Television, they are back, touring again for a brief period following a great gig at Glastonbury. So for your slice of pop/comedy/anarchy/history look no further. John Lennon loved them, George Harrison loved them, Paul McCartney came round!

Sun 18 May 7.30pm £20, £18 (concs)

A transaction fee of £1 per transaction (not per ticket) applies to on line bookings

BITCH BOXER THEATRE ‘The precision, muscle and commitment in her performance is, at times, breathtaking.’ Telegraph

Don’t be put off by the title, this is a thoughtful, beautifully realised and performed play about a young girl who becomes a boxer, and her growing up. Written and performed by Charlotte Joseph, it won the Holden Street Theatres Awards 2013 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Soho Young Writers Award 2012, and lots of praise from audiences. You’ll be impressed, and moved. Chloe got into boxing aged eleven, after her mother left. It brought her peace and made her a rather good boxer, with a real chance of being picked for the Olympics. Two things threaten this – her father’s sudden death and falling in love, which makes Chloe feel girly in an unfamiliar way. Charlotte brings high energy and absolute authority to the part of Chloe – shadow boxing and jumping rope to Johnny Cash, or just sitting and talking with us. She’s determined to prove herself to the world. The show builds brilliantly to the excitement of the climax at the Olympics qualifying bout. Sat 24 May 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs), £10 (under 16’s) Ages 14+ (strong language, sexual references)

PIRATE GRAN CHILDREN’S THEATRE Meet Gran. She bakes. She knits. You’d never guess she was a Pirate with a pet crocodile under her bed, a wicked sense of humour and a raft of adventures to tell! Pirating isn’t the life for everyone but Gran says if you don’t mind sleeping in a hammock and being called Scary Mary, then it’s a career more girls should think about. Presented by Scamp Theatre and Watford Palace Theatre ‘I think the quality of what Scamp do is amazing’ Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse Sun 25 May 2pm £8, £6 (concs) Ages 3+ and adults

FAIRPORT ACOUSTIC CONVENTION MUSIC: FOLK They’re an institution nationally, in Oxfordshire and now at Cornerstone. Every year they want to come to Didcot and every year we want to have them as we hear the fans clamour. As ever, a great show of old favourites, some reworkings, spontaneous banter and some previously unheard material from their new studio album.

Fri 30 May 8pm £20, £18 (concs)

THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE THEATRE Thursday 14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening of The Importance of Being Earnest, but less than 100 days later Wilde was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. What happened? This fascinating play reveals Wilde’s own sparkling words from the trial and seeks to explain how his world fell apart. ‘archaeological curiosity…timeless fun…a perfectly judged rendering by the European Arts Company’ Sat 31 May 7.30pm £14.50, £13 (concs), £10 (under 16’s) Ages 14+ (adult themes)

A REAL FAIRY STORY CHILDREN’S THEATRE Have you ever seen a fairy? Mrs Buttersnap needs to photograph one for her book. So with an assortment of gadgets, a sprinkling of comedy and the help of her cat she sets out to do so. Join her on a journey into a realm full of wonder and shadow puppetry.

Come with us and use the power of your imagination, and we’ll enter fairyland. Sun 1 June 2pm £8, £6 (concs) Ages 3-7 and adults. Places limited, book early.

HARDEEP SINGH KOHLI: HARDEEP IS YOUR LOVE COMEDY: STAND-UP Hardeep’s been here before with his comedy and cooking shows – this time there’s no cooking but all comedy, with his new stand-up fresh from a run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe. The comedian, broadcaster, journalist, and chef appears on BBC Radio 4 regularly and Question Time, This Week, The One Show and Celebrity Masterchef. Join him for his take on life, love and finding romance in middle age. ‘Immensely funny’ Daily Express Fri 6 June 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs)

MIKE MCGEAR MCCARTNEY SEX, DRUGS & ROCK ‘N’ ROLL Paul McCartney’s brother was an integral part of the Merseybeat era himself, in the group Scaffold which included Roger McGough. Mike was also a great photographer, nicknamed ‘Flash Harry’ by Brian Epstein. On this intimate ‘evening with’ he uses his family album to take us through many behind the scenes tales. Jimi Hendrix, Billy Connolly, Michael Parkinson, Joe Brown – all these and more are here.

This is Mike’s first tour in 42 years, and it’s a unique chance to get an in-depth look at childhood in Liverpool in the 50’s and the music of the 60’s. It’s not a music show, but since two of Mike’s most famous songs were Lily The Pink and Thank you Very Much, he might just burst into song.

‘At last – the good looking one from the Scaffold returns’ Harry Hill

Sat 7 June 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs)

YUMMM! CHILDREN’S: DANCE THEATRE Seating the audience around the performance area (the ‘dinner table’) this is a celebration of food seen through children’s eyes. Tables can dance, plates spin, and utensils are interwoven into quirky meal time rituals. Performances are followed by short play activity for audiences on stage, where children get their own utensils to play with. Chomp, chomp, chomp! Sun 8 June 11am for under 4’s and 2pm for 4’s and over £8, £6 (concs) Places limited to 60 children per performance. Please book early.

THE PAPERBOYS MUSIC: FOLK Formed by Mexican-born Tom Landa in Canada in the mid 90’s, The Paperboys are fantastic live. It’s the folk of fiddle and flute, but mixed with the hook of horns and Latin and African rhythms. Touring for 15 years, with 7 albums and a Juno award to their credit, The Paperboys are guaranteed to raise the roof. ‘A mix of Eagles-laced alt-country, Tower of Power horns and gospel choirs, reminiscent of early Elton John and Van Morrison’ Americana UK Fri 13 June 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs)

JULIE MADLY DEEPLY MUSICAL THEATRE Love Julie Andrews? Always singing along with Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music? Direct from the West End, starring Fascinating Aida star Sarah-Louise Young, who has been named by TimeOut as one of London’s Top Ten cabaret performers. With Michael Roulston on piano, they perform Julie’s famous songs, with anecdotes from her life, from child star to musical theatre institution. ‘Deliriously wonderful cabaret. More than just a fan letter: a must see’ HHHHH Three Weeks Sat 14 June 8pm £15.50, £14 (concs)

SCREAMING WITH LAUGHTER COMEDY FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN Comedian Lucy Porter leads an afternoon cabaret show of comedy where mums, dads and grandparents can relax and laugh about parenthood with some fine comedians…and bring baby too! These stand-up comedians are used to rowdy stag and hen do’s so they won’t bat an eyelid if you have to move around, baby emits a shout or scream, or you need to feed them in the auditorium. Lucy has two toddlers herself so she’s in the zone!

Sun 15 June 2pm £8, £6 (concs), £2 (under 18 months)

JAZZ REEDS INCORPORATED MUSIC: JAZZ We’re delighted to welcome back to Cornerstone jazz star Alvin Roy. Following his successes here with The Mainstream All Stars and The Alex Welsh Tribute Band, he’s put together a new jazz instrumental six-piece. With a front line of Julian Marc Stringle, Alvin himself and Mike Wills on various saxophones and clarinets, supported by Rod Kelly on piano, Charlie Stratford on drums and John Rees Jones on bass. ‘The Great American Song Book’ with original mainstream/swing jazz numbers.

Sat 21 June 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs)

CHARLIE BAKER: BAKER’S DOZEN COMEDY: STAND-UP ‘Devon’s answer to Sinatra’ (The Guardian), Jack Black lookalike and Wallingford resident, Charlie is fast becoming a national star.

This show is absolutely nuts and a complete delight. Charlie has a great jazz belter of a voice and he takes the 13 best-selling UK singles from the last 13 years and puts his own twist on each. ‘It Wasn’t Me’ becomes a crooned French ballad and ‘Amarillo’ is transformed into a smooth number that wouldn’t be out of place on an Adele B-side.

Charlie intersperses the musical sections with jokes, audience banter and interaction – using willing audience members to the greatest comic effect. Very, very funny, and a charming, warming fun Sunday night out that you’ll be telling your friends they shouldn’t have missed out on! ‘Pure, undulating musical fun. Not to be missed’ HHHHH Three Weeks Sun 22 June 8pm £12, £10 (concs)

BRISTOL OLD VIC THEATRE SCHOOL: SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE THEATRE: CLASSIC Master of the French farce, Feydeau created the perfect high-spirited romp of passions, pace and pleasure. Lucienne is being pursued by the married Pontagnac, who’s astounded to discover that she is already married to his friend Valentin. Lucienne has sworn to be faithful to Valentin as long as he remains so to her, so when an old ‘indiscretion’ of her husband’s arrives from Germany with her other half in tow it looks like there might be an ‘out’ for Lucienne.

Everyone ends up at the Hotel Ultimus, where their guests include an old army doctor and his deaf wife, in Paris to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Beds are swapped, infidelities discovered and everyone’s goose is cooked good and proper. Fun, farcical, fast – this play stars the superb actors from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School who we will no doubt see as the global stars of the future. Friday 27 June 8pm £14.50, £13 (concs), £10 (under 16’s) Ages 12+
