President Elizabeth Garrett responded to a report on campus sexual assault climate issued by the Association of American Universities in an email sent to the Cornell community Monday morning.

Annual Hackathon Showcases Student Talent

University Prof. Éva Tardos Named Editor in Chief Of Computer Science Publication The Journal of the Association for Computing Industry named Prof. Éva Tardos, computer science, its new editor in chief, according to a University press release.

The ACM’s journal is considered the most important in computer science, the press release said. According to the university, Tardos was previously the journal’s Economics and Computation area editor and will begin her job as editor in chief Oct. 2.

Local Big Red Bullet to Begin Service Wednesday The Big Red Bullet — a bus line running directly between Ithaca and New York City — will begin running this Wednesday, according to The Ithaca Journal. The bus line plans to charge riders $110 for weekday trips and $130 for weekend ones — prices comparable to the Greyhound’s and those of Cornell’s Campus to Campus service — The Journal reported. The Bullet, which will pick up riders at the Green Street bus station and drop them off at Bryant Park, will also offer amenities such as Wi-Fi and reclinable seats, according to The Journal.

Walgreens, Ithaca Health Alliance to Provide Free Flu Shots The Ithaca Health Alliance, partnering with Walgreens, will offer free flu shots to Ithaca adults lacking sufficient insurance to cover the shots, according to The Ithaca Journal. The Health Alliance’s clinic will be open for walk-ins from 2 - 4 p.m.

Thursday, The Journal reported. The Alliance will also provide an alternate version of the vaccine for pregnant women.

National Walker Quits Race Wisconsin governor Scott Walker (R) dropped out of the 2016 presidential race Monday, saying he wanted Republican voters to focus on supporting a strong Republican candidate, according to The New York Times.

Another reason for Walker’s withdrawal, The Times said, was a lack of public support and funds. Walker began his campaign for a presidential nomination as the most popular candidate but currently holds less than 0.5 percent of Republican primary support, according to a recent CNN survey.

Teams of battle-ready hackers armed with laptops, sleeping bags and ambition filed into the Physical Sciences Building this weekend, ready to hack for 36 continuous hours for Cornell’s second annual BigRed//Hacks.

Hundreds of hackers from across the East Coast shared their passion of hacking, creating innovative projects and developing their skills.

After 36 hours of hacking, participants presented their projects to judges, who were software designers and programmers from companies like Capital One and Goldman Sachs.

BigRed//Hacks co-founders Leon Zaruvinsky ’17 and Junia George ’17 kicked off the hackathon with opening speeches, in which they emphasized camaraderie and personal growth.

“We don’t want you to be building your hacks alone,” Zaruvinsky said. “We want you to be meeting new people, getting new ideas and we want you to be asking for help.”

Zaruvinsky also encouraged hackers to meet new people, to form teams at the meet-andgreet and through the BigRed//Hacks Facebook group and to “be kind” despite fierce competition.

Ideas of community and passionate learning drive the BigRed//Hacks organizers, according to George.

“We wanted to keep the spirit of why we were doing this alive. We really want students to be able to learn something,” George said in an interview with The Sun. “You’re supposed to feel safe in this community and not be afraid to share your thoughts and try something new.”

Though the 36-hour long event may seem intimidating for newcomers, George said many first-time hackers were in attendance.

award George said she hopes will further help the growth of the community. George thanked the University’s computer science department, Major League Hacking and the team of BigRed//Hacks organizers for their support.

Ning Wang ’16, who won the Newbie Prize award last year and was participating again this year, said her team considered BigRed//Hacks a fun learning experience rather than a stressful competition.

“There are mentors walking around asking how it’s going,” Wang said. “I really appreciate that.”

John Tambunting, a visiting hacker and senior at Brown, said he believes the competitive environment brought out the best in him and his team of hackers.

“We definitely tested our capabilities, and we all had something to contribute,”

Tambunting said. “Hacking is taking on a new meaning.”

While many see hacking as an act of exploitation and destruction, Tambunting said hacking is really “all about creating.”

Other participants like Sandile Keswa, a graduate from Temple University, were veteran hackers aiming to further improve their skills.

Both first-time hackers and long-time hackers like Keswa expressed appreciation for the BigRed//Hacks environment.

“There’s this buzz of innovation everywhere,” Keswa said.

When asked for words of advice to aspiring hackers, Keswa spoke confidently.

“Come to a hackathon. It might change your life,” he said.

Student Org.Adds Water Bottle Fillers to Five Buildings

Since receiving a $20,000 grant from the Student Assembly’s Infrastructure Fund in Dec. 2014, Take Back the Tap — a student outreach campaign that aims to spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic bottle usage on the environment — has installed water bottle fillers in five new buildings across campus over the summer.

As of April 2013, 33 water bottle fillers, which operate with motion sensors to fill water bottles, were installed in campus buildings that included Bailey Hall, Mann Library, Olin Library and Schwartz Performing Arts Center, according to a University inventory on bottle filling stations.

Students can find the new fillers in Barton Hall, Helen Newman Hall, Bartels Hall, Kennedy Hall and Teagle Hall that were installed over the summer, according to former Take Back the Tap president Alexa Bakker ’15.

Take Back the Tap’s current president Susan McGrattan ’17 said the installments this summer were concentrated in athletic buildings due to a high demand for water in these locations.

McGrattan added that the campaign hopes to install at least one or two more water bottle fillers if there are sufficient funds left over from the grant.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Cloud Nothings Rock Ithaca College

Ithaca College’s Emerson Suites is a lovely little venue for a band to play in. The room is floored with plush blue carpet, and the giant I.C. insignia emblazoned on the wall make the room as likely a candidate for a parliamentary meeting as it is for a rock show.

The lights go down. First up is Shore Acres Drive, an COURTESY OF Ithaca band that is making KURT FRITJOFSON its way through the ranks by opening for a nationally touring act.

Indelibly, pop music is rooted in the teenage experience, and the sounds of frustration and the boundless energy of youth are still extant as Shore Acres Drive wind up their first song. The triplets of the bass and guitar combined (thank you Kraftwerk) make for a weighty anchor. The tone of bassist James Manton’s Fender growls low, a perfect compliment to frontman Charlie Fraioli’s ’16 slashing Telecaster. Drummer Jake Burchard ’17 fills in the spaces with taps on the ride cymbal and flawlessly executed backbeats.

The front row pulses and rocks back and forth. They have their arms around one another, locked in one writhing, pulsing line. Charlie sends his head back in rapture, looking to the sky as the crowd grooves to the pulse. A perfectly punctuated guitar line starts the second song — it has a Jimmy Eat Worldstyle urgency to it — and the room suddenly sounds like what

it was to be young in 1999. The day before the millennium, when philandering Presidents and this thing called the “Macarena” were the greatest concerns of the day.

Charlie offers thanks to the crowd after each song. His awshucks sincerity is wonderful. “This is a really awesome show for us,” he says, “because the last show I played, I banged my head on the ceiling of a basement.”

A shimmering feedback effect fills the speakers with wash before the triplet strumming begins, palm-muted — “We’re so independent, we pay our rent with our parents’ checks and do our own laundry.

We’re taking big steps,” Charlie notes, ironically.

When he sings the line “chasing Wall Street dreams; I have nowhere I want to be,” it is the first time that I have ever heard a Cornell student drop the trust-fund artifice and speak candidly and refreshingly about themselves.

After a big round of applause, Cloud Nothings takes the stage. Bassist T.J. Duke starts by establishing his don’t-give-adamn, alpha credentials, ordering the crew to turn down the lights with all of the grace of a New York City taxi driver. And then it starts — the bass guitar and bass drum lodge solidly within the sternum, and the first three rows go nuts. Frontman Dylan Baldi is decked out in a mustard yellow paisley print shirt, black hornrims under his long brown hair. He looks like a cross between Rivers Cuomo and Jarvis Cocker. Baldi injects a

little on-the-road humor; “We’ve been drinking lemonade and eating refried beans for three hours now, so we’re ready to go.”

And they do go, mercilessly. A group of students (who attempted to lead the crowd in an a cappella rendition of Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend” during the intermission) are shaking their hair for all it’s worth in the front row. The beat almost loses the band, falls out from underneath them like wheels from a child’s runaway bike, but they grab hold of it with wellrehearsed discipline and pull it back to where it belongs: right in the chest. Baldi coaxes a solo out of his creamy white S.G. as if he’s disciplining an uncooperative pet.

Drummer Jayson Gerycz pushes beats out of a basic 1940sstyle jazz kit that most drummers can’t get out of a Neil Peart setup. It warms the heart of this minimalist. And the I.C. sound crew are earning their pay tonight — the drums sound magnificent. Every song, every tempo is pushed to the edge, a jet held together with spit and bailing wire. But it is in this recklessness that the surging mass of moshing flesh finds transcendence. The spotlight finds them and remains fixed. Are we being encouraged to participate or to remain voyeurs?

Duke goes into a three-note riff that recalls Joy Division, if Lemmy had replaced Peter Hook. Gerycz is tireless — absolutely perfect with his hits; each is perfectly intertwined with the bass guitar, like two serpents. “No future, no past,” they chant to great applause. ’90s nihilism is back in fashion.

“I die, I die, I die, I die, I die, I die,” he screams over this maddening intensity. The lights shake, green and yellow spirals, like B.P. is going under. He reiterates his doom like a malfunctioning computer; HAL 9000 with a penchant for effects pedals.

The show ends abruptly. They thank everyone for being here, and walk defiantly off stage. Perversely, the lights come up and pleasant F.M. radio begins to pump over the loudspeakers.

which caters primarily to a business-oriented readership, considers Pearson an idol for representing the average man in “a nation where social mobility has ground to a halt and a small, narrow group dominate all the top jobs.” He is the beloved token poor man, who struck gold and became rich, which sends a message to any unsatisfied poor person that perhaps social mobility is increasing and that it is equally possible for he or she to become just as successful. Whether it happens or not, it eases the guilt of the elite members of society who were born into prosperity and the attainable bright future. They can flaunt their wealth and connections with a clean conscience because they believe in the media’s exaggerated vision of the American Dream that still exists. And then they’ll turn and complain about the lazy men on food stamps.

Ideally, elite society should consist of the self-made man who uses ambition rather than money to earn success, so we throw our contempt at those who use their privilege to assure their high status. When Lana Del Rey first became famous, some critics realized that she wasn’t particularly talented, and were quick to argue that “Daddy’s money” gave her a career. Perhaps that’s true , but that’s no different from the many others born into the opportunity to become famous. A significant amount of Hollywood, Wall Street and Washington is served by the privileged, but we focus on the few lucky people who came from modest upbringings to create the illusion of a diverse elite community. We hope that society has changed enough to give at least some talented poor prodigies a shot at fame or wealth, but if publications like Forbes and the New York Times still take the time to describe the childhood upbringings of the rags-to-riches elite as a celebratory news event, we haven’t made it to that opportunistic form of society we pretend to have.

Beauty in Rebellion: The Wanted 18

During the first Palestinian Intifada in the 1980s, residents of Beit Sahour, a small Palestinian town, decided to start a dairy farm in order to boycott milk from Israeli dairies. They purchased 18 cows from a sympathetic Israeli and took up the task of learning how to care for the animals. The Israeli government, threatened by this relatively harmless act of resistance, declared the 18 cows a threat to national security. And so our film begins. The Wanted 18 is a smattering of everything: A snapshot of Palestine during the first Intifada, a documentary about the Israeli-occupied territories, an animated film and a showcase of the gorgeous Palestinian wilderness.

The film, presented at Cinemapolis through the Olive Branch Film Series, opens with panoramic views of the desert, followed by an intimate look into the town of Beit Sahour. I became as familiar with the feel of Beit Sahour as I am with my own tiny hometown by the end of the film. The reason The Wanted 18 was ultimately so successful was not only because of the way it incorporated humor into an otherwise tense political situation, but also because of the way it cleverly inte-

grated metaphors through the use of animation. Four of the 18 cows were animated and given personalities that echoed voices of Israeli citizens. Not only did this infuse the film with humor, it also allowed for a much more nuanced look into the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

In addition, by using animation, I felt that the ridiculousness of the situation was emphasized; one scene that stood out in particular consisted of an Israeli soldier raiding the house to look for the cows while one of the cows swung overhead perched upon a chandelier. In addition, the interviews were filmed in such a way as to mimic a comic book style. The camera angles and use of sparse lighting made me feel like I was watching something that was somewhat surreal, recreating the feelings of the film’s narrator and director.

The narrator of the film, Amer Shomali, grew up in a Syrian refugee camp, and therefore only read about the Intifada in history books. I felt like I discovered the history of his homeland alongside him throughout the film, especially during scenes that depicted everyday life with blatant honesty. Shomali’s interviews were poignant and lent great insight and depth into what life would have been like during the first Intifada. One of my favorite lines from the film was when Shomali says, “I never really thought Palestine was a physical place, to me it was heaven.” I thought this quote was

so beautiful and pertinent to Shomali’s particular situation. Since he did not grow up in his own country, he yearned for something more that he couldn’t quite describe. The last scene was especially striking. At the end of the Intifada, while everyone is celebrating the Oslo Accords and the town of Beit Sahour mourns the loss of Palestinian land, one of the cows dies giving birth to twins. One of the twins survives and runs off into the desert, never to be seen again. Shomali ends the film by searching for the cow himself, and when he cannot find her, he decides to take her place in the desert, living in a cave and staying away from the conflict he had only read about in books.

This film truly captures the complex nature of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict with unwavering truth and clarity. Its incredibly heavy mood was lightened with its use of animation, and I loved getting to discover what life was like during the first Intifada along with Shomali. The Wanted 18 expresses the natural beauty of Palestine’s landscape as well as its people through its use of animation and cinematography, and hence is not only a documentary but also a story.

Improving Bystander Education at Cornell THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES RELEASED the results of its sexual assault report Monday after conducting a survey at 27 institutions of higher education last semester. The findings reinforced the need for colleges to address sexual assault and misconduct on campuses across the country. Among the most important findings for Cornell is the need for a stronger culture that specifically targets sexual misconduct through bystander education.

Of the more than half of survey respondents at Cornell who said they saw an intoxicated person about to engage in sexual activity, 79 percent said they did nothing in response, with 22.2 percent saying they did not know what to do.

This statistic clearly highlights the need for Cornell to expand its effort to facilitate bystander intervention education. Complacency in these situations is concerning, but not knowing one should intervene is even more damaging to creating a healthy sexual environment on campus. To create a healthy dialogue on campus regarding sex, our community must first be informed on active consent.

This education, however, must be supplemented by effective, student-to-student bystander education programs to fully address any sexual misconduct that takes place on campus.

While the University currently has a number of programs, including Wingman 101, Consent Ed and Cayuga’s Watchers, that work to inform Cornellians on how to address possible incidents of sexual violence and other risky behaviors on campus, these programs should reach a wider audience on campus. The AAU report found that while undergraduate students were more informed of available resources on campus, graduate students are not. Sexual misconduct is not limited to a specific population of college students, therefore all Cornellians, including students, faculty and staff, should be properly educated on proper protocols for handling such instances.

Since a string of sexual assault reports shook campus in the fall of 2012, Cornell has made serious strides in working towards addressing the issue of sexual violence. Still, the results from this new report show that much more work needs to be done at Cornell. We urge all members of the community to work towards addressing these issues surrounding sexual violence to encourage dialogue and bystander education.

Daily Stressors And Mental Health

C

ornell pulled out all the stops this past weekend. The colorful robes, expansive red carpets and a new ice cream flavor were the hallmarks of a Cornell style inauguration. The inauguration of Elizabeth Garrett, Cornell’s 13th President, brought with it all the pomp and circumstance that one would expect, but it also brought some interesting perspectives on students more broadly.

During the inaugural procession, right before I was marching along the red carpet, I ran into some of my friends and fellow students who, instead of participating in the Homecoming festivities, were on their way to the library. For so many students, like my friends, attending events like the historic inauguration of the first woman president of the University, was simply not an option.

This brings me to my topic for this article: the reality of mental health at Cornell.

Now that we’re a month into the semester, many juniors and seniors must deal with the pressure of finding internships and fulltime jobs along with academic stressors. Hours in the day become precious — to the point where students aren’t able to expend a

My engineering and architecture counterparts are no strangers to these heavy academic pressures and all-nighters spent grinding away at the library. For most students, this is just something that we have grown to accept as an inevitability. Little action has been done to truly address the almost unrealistic pressures that so many students face day to day on this campus.

The problem with this mentality is that until we have a campus community where all students, regardless of their major, are given the opportunity to partake in campus initiatives intended for everyone, we cannot solve some of the greatest challenges universities face.

By this I mean that until we have participation from students like engineers and architects, how can governing bodies on this campus actually advocate for better policies? While schools like ILR and the School of Hotel Administration see an almost overrepresentation in campus advocacy bodies, there are very few students from the sciences represented in these bodies.

Just last week, the Student Assembly saw a resolution focusing on study groups for required classes for pre-medical students.

While we have engineering, architecture and some science representatives, who do great work in their own regard, the proportion compared to students in those fields to ILR, Hotel, AEM or a government and economics major is very small. Without these necessary voices, little can be done to actually change the situation for these students.

In order to actually better the situation, I believe in the importance of having sufficient resources for mental health support to allow students greater flexibility. Last semester, I had the opportunity to work on a resolution through the Student Assembly that focused on professors listing resources available for mental health in the syllabi. The hope was that if we required professors to recognize mental health on their syllabi, it would force them to realize the gravity of the issue.

Following the passage of this resolution, the co-sponsors and I had the chance to partake in panels and various campus discussions on resources available for students. While a lot of work still needs to be done to actually address the situation, I believe that it takes steps that ensure professors understand the mental health pressures and that they are wary of it for their students.

Volleyball Tops Binghamton, Loses to Seton Hall and Loyola Red goes 1-2 in Cornell Invitational as junior setter Alyssa Phelps earns place on All-Tournament team

This weekend, Cornell was host to Binghamton, Seton Hall and Loyola University of Chicago. On Friday, Bing hamton came to Newman Arena for the first match of the Invi tational. The Bearcats entered the match with a 3-6 record, and the Red looked to even out their record with a win, coming in at 3-4.

Cornell (4-6) and Binghamton (3-11) were neck and neck in the first set. Tied at 2323, the Red pulled ahead for the win with two huge blocks from freshman Maddy Sroufe and junior Macey Wilson. Wilson also led the team in kills, slamming 15 kills down and totaling a .370 kill percentage.

“We really came together and played

great on Friday,” Wilson said. “Being at home was extremely exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. I think we felt a lot more pressure to perform at home, but the crowd against Binghamton was

team, winning the match in three quick sets. Like the night before, sophomore Chelsea Sincox led both teams in digs, scooping up eight against the Pirates.

Regular setter junior Alyssa Phelps hit backside for some rotations, allowing freshmen setters Lauren Donnelly and Gabby Goodall to get some important playing experience.

Donnelly recorded nine assists, while Goodall finished with five.

Later that night, the final match of the Invitational took place at 7 p.m., this one a matchup featuring the Loyola Ramblers (112) and Cornell. The Ramblers came in with a lot of experience under their belts; they had met with 12 opponents compared to Cornell’s nine. Coming in with victories in the Invitational over Binghamton and Seton Hall, against the home team, the Ramblers won in three straight sets. Both the first and second ended in a 2515 loss for the Red, and despite putting up a fight in the last set, the Cornell gave up that one too, 25-23.

Phelps was back as the setter for the Red, and earned AllTournament honors for her performance, consistently putting up big assisting and blocking numbers.

“One of the things we learned this weekend is how to focus and fight in tough situations,” Wilson said.

“We really enjoyed playing strong teams this weekend. It was a great learning experience to be challenged by some teams that are at the level of our strongest conference opponents. It really allowed us to understand some things we need to work on to do well in the Ivy League.”

The team will get its first chance to go up against Ivy League competition, when Columbia comes to Ithaca on Saturday.

Cornell Beats Air Force for First Victory Men’s soccer also ties Duquesne, bringing overall record to 1-5-1

Something wasn’t right in Madison Heck’s mind. He sent in the corner kick, but he couldn’t see his main target, 6-foot-7 junior Liam Crotty. The play had developed, and after the dust settled and the ball was cleared, Crotty was on the ground and Air Force’s Cameron Duley was sent off the field with a red card. The penalty had occurred in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Red, a golden chance to get a spark for the Red and equalize the game, 1-1.

“Apparently there was a scrum, and [Duley] threw a punch. The referee had a good look at [the play] and he made the right call,” Heck said. “He gave [Duley] a red card, which should always happen when there’s a punch thrown, then we got the penalty kick.”

Heck was able to convert the kick in the 81st minute and send the game into sudden-death overtime.

Mistakes continued for the Falcons in overtime.

After Heck sent in a free kick in the 96th minute, the ball hit off the head of an Air Force defender and resulted in an own goal, giving the Red a 2-1 win, its first of the season.

Despite being undermanned after a red card, the Red was able to force an overtime draw, 0-0, against Duquesne on Friday. Cornell ultimately came away with the CU Inaria Cup title. The Red (1-5-1) had previously lost its first five games.

Heck said he agreed that the team may be on its way to more victories.

“We’ve known all along this season that we can play like this,” Heck said. “If we play to our full potential and everybody works as hard as they possibly can, which we have these past two games, then we can come out with the results we want every single time.”

Head coach Jaro Zawislan also said he was pleased to see the improvement of the team not only this weekend, but also the games leading up to the Inaria Cup. “We were getting better in the stretch of the five games,” he said. “That’s what we expect of our team, to keep making progress. It wasn’t good enough to get the

win on Friday, but it was good enough to get a positive result.”

Two overtime games in the span of three days, however, has clearly taken a toll on the team.

“Recovery will be the priority for the next 24 hours,” Zawislan said. “After playing on Friday and Sunday, both overtime games, that definitely takes a physical toll on the players’ bodies. But that just shows the character of this group — playing the next play, playing for the last second of the game, and pushing for the equalizer.

Again, credit to our group for staying the course.”

The Red is hoping to have a two-game win streak after Wednesday, when it will travel to Oneonta, New York to take on Hartwick College.

Sprint Easily Blows by Mansfield in Opening Contest

“Our focus this year has been to finish games,” explained Cornell sprint football head coach Bart Guccia. The Red did just that in its 33-7 victory over Mansfield on Saturday, completing a 26-0 run over the

last three quarters. The victory extended the Red’s (1-0) career undefeated streak against Mansfield (0-1).

“Both the offense and defense did an excellent job in closing out the game,” Guccia said. “The defense shut them out after their initial score, and the offense was able to put some points on in the

“Both sides of the ball executed and finished in the second half and especially in the fourth quarter,” senior offensive co-captain and wide receiver Trevor Marrero added. “Our defense shut them out after their first score, and we possessed the ball on offense and limited mistakes.”

Junior quarterback Rob Pannullo had a good game, passing for 116 yards and two touchdowns and adding on 72 rushing yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Jino Park played very well, with seven unassisted tackles and an interception he returned for a touchdown.

Marrero said he is extremely proud of the team’s defensive performance.

“The fumble recovery in the second quarter and then Jino Park’s interception return changed the course of the game,” he said. “It made our job on offense a lot easier.”

It was an all-around solid effort from everyone on the field.

“The defense and special teams stepped up and made plays,” Marrero said. “Rob [Pannullo] managed the game extremely well, and Ryan Jackson's punting was phenomenal.”

The only problem Guccia noticed was in terms of penalties.

“We might have committed a few

unnecessary penalties I thought we shouldn’t have done,” he said. “Other than that we played a very solid game.”

Guccia and the Red will take the momentum from this victory into practice this week to prepare for the game against Franklin Pierce on Saturday.

“We have to go out on the road and prepare for another tough game,” Guccia said. “It’s always tough to go on a long trip and play well.”

Each week of practice is essential for success in sprint football. Because there are no playoffs, the Red must treat each week like it’s the last of the season. A midseason loss could determine a league championship, as the final league standings represent which team is champion.

Penn soundly defeated Franklin Pierce 51-7 on Saturday in the team’s season opener, but Guccia emphasized that the Red should not use this as a confidence boost. No road game is ever an easy task.

Cornell beat the Ravens, 28-7, in last season’s opener but lost to them two years ago, 13-6.

“We started watching film on [Franklin Pierce’s] game this past weekend against Penn,” Marrero said. “We want to build off of the positives from the Mansfield game and, as always, finish.”
