University Sees Spike In D.O.Matriculants

Over 150 percent rise in enrollees since ’08

By ASHLEY CHU Sun Staff Writer

Cornell has seen a 153 percent increase in the number of matriculants to osteopathic medical schools between 2008 and 2013, according to Rebecca Sparrow, executive director of Cornell Career Services. This figure supports national trends — which recently came to light after the publication of a The New York Times piece — with the number of students enrolling in osteopathic medical schools increasing and approximately a quarter of all medical school graduates coming from such schools. “The numbers are small though the percentage is high,” Sparrow said of the figure. “In 2008, we only had 15 matriculants in D.O. schools, jumping up to 38 in 2013. But the interesting thing is that the big jump happened between 2008 and 2009, so we went from 15 matriculants in 2008 to 26 in 2009, and it’s gradually increased to 38 in 2013.” Sparrow added that the University’s trend of students applying to D.O. schools appears to be “stronger” than the national one. “Looking at the numbers, we had almost a 50 percent jump in number of applications from Cornell [to D.O. schools] from 2008 to 2009, but nowhere near that kind of an increase [in the national trend] between those two years or even from 2008 to See MED. Cornell Entrepreneurship Kickoff Aims to Promote Student Startups By ZOE FERGUSON Sun Staff Writer

Hundreds of enterprising Cornellians attended the Cornell Entrepreneurship Kickoff — an event aimed to help spread awareness about startups among Cornell students — at the POPSHOP in Collegetown Tuesday evening.

Pujaa Rajan ’17 — co-president of Life Changing Labs — said she hoped the kickoff event would showcase student entrepreneurs’ passion. “This event will show and tell about how Cornell preps its young entrepreneurs — a network of passionately curious hard-working student entrepreneurs and a highly gifted collective intellect,”

Rajan said. Ryan Kishore ’17, a member of Life Changing Labs, said the organization is “a great incubator and resource to Cornell startups at any stage of the process.” The event began with a meet and greet hosted by Life Changing Labs and the POPSHOP. The meet and greet was

followed by an open house including a presentation by New York City venture capital firm Tribeca Venture Partners, founded by Chip Meakem ’93. In addition to the TribecaVP presentation, three past startup teams from eLab presented a showcase to attendees See STARTUPS page 5

Over the past week, multiple students have reported to police that they have been struck by paintballs while on campus, according to the Cornell University Police Department. A “black or dark-colored sedan” driving around campus has targeted students with a paintball gun that would be discharged while moving, according to police. Mutliple incidents have been reported at different locations on campus Tuesday and last Thursday between 5:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. Under New York State law, pos-

session of “any sort of weapon that fires a projectile is illegal on campus,” according to police. “This behavior is intolerable on campus or off,” police said in a crime alert sent to Cornellians Wednesday evening. Police are continuing to investigate the incidents. Officials said they “strongly encourage anyone who has been a victim of this harassment” or anyone else with information regarding the incident to contact CUPD. — Compiled by Tyler Alicea
