Around 1940, students walk through a tunnel of American Elm trees then lining Central Avenue, which has since been replaced by Ho Plaza. In this view, McGraw Tower is hidden behind the foliage, while a few windows of Uris Library are visible at the far left and Sage Chapel peeks through tree trunks at the far right. These majestic trees would die of elm blight a few decades later. For a roughly similar view today, see this issue’s back cover.
