Lord Mayor’s welcome to Corona Cork Film Festival 2012 Programme.

Is cúis mór áthas dom an deis seo a bheith agan fáilte croíúil a chur romhaibh go léir anso le haghaidh an Corona Cork International Film Festival 2012. Corona Cork Film Festival is firmly fixed on the calendar of major festivals which the City Council is proud to support. I remember taking many a week’s holiday in my youth to sit in the dark environs of the Opera House, the old Triskel, and the Kino cinema, clutching my season ticket, as I gorged on cinematic offerings that would never be shown anywhere else in Cork or Ireland. The Festival animates the city, working with a variety of local partners, including the National Sculpture Factory and the Cork Film Centre. The Festival has helped nourish a flourishing local film culture, as evidenced by an increase in both the quantity and quality of local film-making, resulting in three programmes of ‘Made In Cork’ Shorts. It is also significant that film and cinema was the theme for the recent very successful Culture Night. This year there is a focus on Belgian cinema, presented in partnership with the Belgian Embassy in Ireland. In addition, there is a very strong international programme of films. Other aspects of the programme include Education and Youth programming, Outlook (LGBT) and special retrospectives. The Corona Cork Film Festival is truly an international festival, and a strong platform for new Irish cinema. I would like to take the opportunity to compliment the organisers of the Festival for their hard work, dedication and commitment over many years. The people of Cork and the City Council owe them an enormous depth of gratitude. I would also like to thank Corona for their continued sponsorship. In addition; thank you to the many volunteers, patrons and venues for their continued support of the Festival. Cork is a great city, with amazing venues, a fantastic social scene and is the ideal location for a film festival that is eagerly looked forward to each year. I hope that you will all enjoy it as much as I will. Gúim gach rath oraibh leis an chlár seo agaibh. Cllr John Buttimer Ard Mhéara Chorcaí, Lord Mayor of Cork

A message from the Managing Director of Barry & Fitzwilliam, Michael Barry Distributors of Corona Extra and Corona Light We are very proud to partner again with the Corona Cork Film Festival for the sixth year in a row as title sponsors. It is encouraging to see a festival that is now in its 57th year continue to thrive and bring a refreshing new mix of feature films, short films and documentaries to film enthusiasts from Ireland and abroad each year, and this year looks more exciting than ever. The partnership has been a resounding success for Corona Extra to date and this year we will focus the sponsorship on our Corona Light brand, which we launched earlier this year, and will encourage people to ‘experience the light’, cameras and action. We will continue to support the venture through our title sponsorship and by rolling out a strong communications campaign to promote the Corona Cork Film Festival nationwide. We are fully supportive of the Festival Board, management and tremendous staff, and applaud the efforts of the myriad filmmakers, patrons and volunteers who rally around to bring remarkable film, sociability and fun to the City. Cork and Ireland have a vibrant cultural and artistic community and the festival affords everyone the opportunity to experience the talent of filmmakers from around the world. Fáilte You are very welcome to the 2012 Corona Cork Film Festival. We have prepared an exciting and varied schedule of documentaries and shorts as well as feature films which we hope you will find both entertaining and stimulating. We continue our emphasis on the work of emerging filmmakers, including three ‘Made In Cork’ programmes. This well-spring of new work continues to enrich our cinematic lives and gives a platform to new veins of talent across the full skill spectrum. Our International Shorts programme this year will include a special Belgian focus. We are delighted to feature, as our Opening Event, The Great Flood, a film/music collaboration by Bill Morrison and Bill Frisell, based on the catastrophic Mississippi River flood of 1927 and its dramatic longterm effects on American society. This promises to be a connoisseur’s must-view; be sure to book your ticket early. Whether you’re browsing online or reading the printed page, there is much in our Festival programme to engage and to stimulate you as a committed film buff or as a casual visitor. We couldn’t mount such an ambitious programme without the generous and encouraging support of The Arts Council, Cork City Council, Fáilte Ireland, MEDIA, Culture Ireland and FÁS Screen Training Ireland.

We are especially grateful to Michael Barry and Corona for their generous engaged sponsorship of the festival for the sixth year in succession. Thank you to our core staff led by Mick Hannigan, to the Festival Board, to our volunteers and seasonal staff. Thank you to the special patrons and friends of the festival and finally to you the festival-goers for your enthusiastic support which makes us feel that it’s all worthwhile. Enjoy! WELCOME Glimpses of the Future - of Cinema, of the Festival! Like other arts organisations, the Corona Cork Film Festival is operating on a reduced budget. However, we are pleased that the 2012 programme is as rich as in any other year, representing contemporary and archival cinema, providing a platform for Irish (and local) filmmaking talent and serving as a forum for discussion and debate about cinema. We are grateful to our funders for enabling this; to the Arts Council, the EU MEDIA Programme, FĂĄilte Ireland, Culture Ireland and Cork City Council; to Barry and Fitzwilliam Ltd. for the continuing Corona title sponsorship; to FĂ S Screen Training Ireland for supporting the emerging filmmaker training programme; to the many other individuals, companies and organisations who make valuable contributions to the festival. We have a track record of identifying filmmaking talent and we boast an impressive list of ‘Festival Alumni’ - filmmakers who came to us with shorts and who have gone on to carve out reputations for themselves in the industry. Kirsten Sheridan and Martin McDonagh, for example, have previously won awards at Cork with their shorts. Both are back this year with impressive feature films. Cathy Brady, who won our Best First Film Award in 2010, is back with two great films in our international shorts programme. There are many others. Equally, this programme represents glimpses of the future of cinema, names to watch out for. So, the festival is a festival of discovery – of new films and of new talent. However the bulk of the programme represents new voices, new visions. Local animator Sminky – yes, I know that’s not his name - is a case in point. A fresh, Irish-accented voice amusing people across the world. We also look back. We honour Paddy Jolley whose untimely death earlier this year robbed Ireland of a great artist. We pay tribute to IADT who over 26 years have trained hundreds of filmmakers and have provided the Cork Film Festival with great shorts. We welcome back John T. Davis for an archive programme. Students of Cork Film Festival will be aware that his Shell Shock Rock was ‘banned’ by the festival in another era. Students of the War of Independence may be interested in the extraordinary story of Major F. (Florrie) O’Donoghue, founding member of Cork Film Festival and subject of Times Of Trouble. The latter is just one of a great number of new Irish documentaries, features and shorts. In fact each year Cork screens more Irish films to more people than any other event in Ireland.

For 57 years Cork Film Festival has given Irish audiences access to films they would otherwise not see, to filmmakers they would otherwise not meet. However, we would be remiss if we were to ignore changes - in funding and in resources, in technologies, in film culture and industry. To secure the future of the festival it is appropriate that we plot a course for the coming years. To this end the festival Board has commissioned a report, a ‘blueprint for the future’. The views of our audiences are of vital importance in securing a successful future and we will be seeking those views in formal and informal ways.

FESTIVAL PROGRAMME “It’s about variety and richness and giving audiences access to a smorgasbord of tastes - feature films obviously but cinema is not just about features, just as literature is not solely about the novel – we are screening the filmic equivalent of poems and short stories and journalism and graphic novels. Also it’s not just about screenings but about meeting filmmakers and about discussion and debate. For one week it’s a kind of collective madness around cinema and I love how people immerse themselves totally. We put on a kind of cinematic party for a week, and everyone is invited!” Mick Hannigan, Festival Director

OPENING GALA

Sunday 11th | 8.30pm | Cork Opera House

The Great Flood Corona Cork Film Festival in association with Note Productions is proud to present The Great Flood, a live performance with legendary guitarist Bill Frisell and his Quartet. The Great Flood is a film-music collaboration inspired by the catastrophic Mississippi River Flood of 1927 and the ensuing transformation of American society. Musically, this fuelled the evolution of acoustic blues to electric blues bands that thrived in cities like Memphis, Detroit, and Chicago, becoming the wellspring for R&B and rock, as well as developing jazz styles. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall, this will be the only Irish date for this very special performance. Frisell has drawn upon his wide musical palette, informed by elements of American-roots music and refracted through his uniquely evocative approach. Morrison’s work is based on remaining footage that is pock-marked and partially deteriorated. The degraded footage figures prominently in Morrison’s aesthetic, with distorted images emerging from nitrate prints that suggest different planes of reality in the story - those lived, dreamt, or remembered.

Step Up To The Plate (Entre Les Bras) Paul Lacoste France | 2011 | 90mins | Subtitled

In 2009 the Michelin starred French chef Michel Bras decided to hand his restaurant over to his son Sebastien, who had been working with him for fifteen years. Step Up To The Plate tells the story of these extraordinary dishes prepared by a father and a son, in the hilly landscape of Aubrac region. We follow this gastronomic transmission, and witness the intimate intricacies of their family ties. Paul Lacoste’s charming and captivating documentary draws a moving and joyful portrait of this outstanding family in their singular devotion to Haute Cuisine for three generations.

We are delighted to present the Irish premiere of Seven Psychopaths, the latest blockbuster from Cork Film Festival, BAFTA and Oscar®-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh, as this year’s closing gala. The film is a star studded, black comedy which follows a group of oddball friends who inadvertently find themselves entangled in Los Angeles’ criminal underworld after stealing the beloved Shih-Tzu of one dangerous gangster. McDonagh has assembled a top-notch line up for his raucous, quickfire gangster caper including Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and Tom Waits. Farrell is note-perfect as Marty, the hapless writer who falls foul of Charlie, an unhinged, dog-loving gangster played with menace and aplomb by Woody Harrelson. Seven Psychopaths is an inspired, blood-splattered and utterly spellbinding triumph of tension, executed with minimum frills and maximum impact.

Tinker Bell: SECRET OF THE WINGS 3D Peggy Holmes USA | 2012 | 75mins | Colour

Disney’s enchanting all-new adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s masterful fairytale takes Tinker Bell, one of the world’s most beloved and iconic characters, into a breathtaking forbidden world where she makes the biggest discovery of her life. SECRET OF THE WINGS is a spectacular and fantastic story which whisks Tinker Bell from the warm world of Pixie Hollow across a great divide to the mysterious Winter Woods, introducing a whole new cast of winter fairies and revealing a magical secret – Tinker Bell has a sister, the equally effervescent and playful Periwinkle. SECRET OF THE WINGS reveals itself as a truly magical fairy-tale for all the family.

Award to Joe McCarthy Joe McCarthy is a Cork filmmaker who has a long association with Cork Film Festival. Having shown his initial documetaries to great acclaim at the festival, his 1972 entry, a 16mm production entitled But They Said It Didn’t They?, was a wonderfully whimsical take on the making of a television commercial on the streets of Cork. The production was made on a modest budget with a Cork crew, Cork actors and unsuspecting members of the public. The film won 2nd prize at that year’s festival. We are delighted and honoured to screen But They Said It Didn’t They? on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and to present Joe McCarthy with a Fin Barre Award in recognition of his filmmaking career in Cork.

“The satisfaction is finding a film that I thought was great, looked great and felt it was dealing with something big. People see it here in Cork and they know they’ve seen something special, with the filmmaker here to introduce it and talk to them about it. So the film hasn’t become commodified and as such, there’s a special connection at that screening because it was unique. We’re filtering through hundreds of films and making our own statement with the films we screen. The festival environment is a special thing, that whole cliché “the communal viewing experience” but it’s not passive. The festival audience expects you to throw up surprises. We have films that have garnered many awards and have all the buzz, but we’ve total left-field films that we want to share. For us it’s special because we’ve nurtured and supported certain filmmakers. It’s the notion that a festival isn’t something that’s switched on and off every year, it’s an organism, and people have invested it, as supporters or filmmakers.” Don O’Mahony, Features and Free Radicals Programmer

FEATURES / A-Z Babeldom is a city so massive and growing at such a speed that soon, it is said, light itself will not escape its gravitational pull. This science fiction documentary is an elegy to urban life, set against the backdrop of a city of the future, a portrait assembled from film shot in modern cities all around the world, blended with a variety of animation techniques and collected from the most recent research in science, technology and architecture. But behind the veil of this gargantuan assemblage of modern metropolitan life is a tale that is all too human.

Celeste and Jesse (Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg) met in high school, married young and are growing apart. Celeste is convinced that divorcing Jesse is the right thing to do–she is on her way up, he is on his way nowhere, and if they do it now instead of later, they can remain supportive friends. Jesse passively accepts this transition into friendship, even though he is still in love with her. As the reality of their separation sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship, and her decision becomes increasingly shrouded in a cloud of uncertainty.

Three guys in their twenties love wine and women. Wine they have savoured abundantly, but they have never had a woman. Under the guise of a wine tour they embark on a journey to Spain hoping to get laid. Nothing will stop them. Not even their disabilities: one is blind, the other is confined to a wheelchair and the third is completely paralysed… While Come As You Are introduces familiar characters (the gruff but kind-hearted driver) and plays along familiar lines, Enthoven–whom Variety has named as one of its Ten Euro Directors to Watch–handles the material with verve; beautifully blending the side-splittingly comic with the quiet moments of despair, without lapsing into condescension or caricature.

Kirsten Sheridan (Disco Pigs) returns with Dollhouse, a thrilling exploration of a night in the life of a group of street teens from Dublin’s inner city who break into a house in an upper class suburb. After the break-in, the evening quickly moves into a night of total chaos driven by a series of revelations that will leave lasting marks on each of them, resulting in an emotional conclusion that they’ll never forget. Filmed in an improvisational style, Dollhouse is a morality tale infused with a punk spirit and freeform execution. Sheridan’s unadorned characters are teeming with a carpe diem approach to life which explodes onscreen into an unpredictable and wide-eyed gem of a tale.

False Trail, the sequel to the massive Swedish box office hit Hunters, is a taut, moody and complex murder thriller filmed in the harsh and unforgiving wilds of northern Sweden. Fifteen years have passed since Eric was hastily forced to leave the police service. He now lives in Stockholm, having befriended the homicide interrogators who were previously his mortal enemies. However, a brutal murder forces him to return to his old neighbourhood where he discovers events are far more complicated than previously thought. As the hunters, the local police and Erik all become increasingly intertwined in the murder investigation, the entire situation develops into a more extreme nightmare than Erik could ever have imagined. The LUX Prize (in Latin, lux means light) was established in 2007 as a tangible symbol of the European Parliament’s commitment to the European film industry and its creative endeavours. Since then, the European Parliament casts an annual spotlight on films that go to the heart of the European public debate. Beyond the stories they tell, these films explore and question European shared values, look at the level of support for the project of building Europe and address cross-border concerns such as immigration, justice, solidarity, public freedoms and fundamentals rights. Each film offers a glimpse into the lives of Europeans, their convictions and doubts and their quest for identity. Three film were nominated at the recent Venice Film Festival, Tabu by Portuguese director, Miguel Gomez; Shun Li And The Poet (Io son li) by Italian director Andrea Segre; and Just The Wind (Csak a Szel) by the Hungarian, Bence Fliegauf. The winning film is selected by Parliament members but their decision is informed by European public votes. We are delighted to screen the three short-listed films and to host a Public Jury of Cork festival-goers who will watch all three and make their choices.

Hoping for a place at university, and a better future, he is inadvertently drawn deeper into the harsh struggles of township life, and begins to ask why the new South Africa looks so much like the old. The young woman begins writing a script for a short film in order to calm her nerves. Loosely improvised, In Another Country excels through its use of sheer imagination to tell a story which weaves and ripples like a jazz riff on human interconnection. FEATURES / A-Z The Patron Saints is a disquieting and hyperrealistic glimpse into life at a nursing home. Bound by the candid confessions of a resident who recently became disabled, the film weaves haunting images, scenes and stories from within the institution walls. Sidestepping conventional documentary methods for a heightened cinematic approach to storytelling, the film employs lyrical realism and black humour in this charged portrait of fading bodies and minds. What happens when someone dies and there’s no record of any next of kin? Pursuit of Loneliness looks at that deeply personal and interpersonal question when an elderly woman dies anonymously in a county hospital, to create a film that is both poetic meditation and procedural. Four central characters try to find the deceased woman’s family over the next twentyfour hours. With a cast comprised of real doctors, nurses and investigators from the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office, Laurence Thrush’s direction blends elements of documentary realism within the boundaries of a very humane and cautionary narrative.

Kazik Radwanski has been a Cork Film Festival favourite since his short Assault screened here in 2008. In 2010 and 2011 the respective shorts Out In The Deep Blue Sea and Green Crayons were presented as part of our Great Shorts screenings. “Watching the shelves slowly fill each year with entries, documentaries are usually the first in. These filmmakers are a bit of a renegade breed, they’re making films independently that are often very personal. This section now has a very distinct feel to it and Pamela Friedman who previews all of them puts an inordinate amount of care and consideration into their viewing. The documentary filmmaker is often the first to pitch up at the festival and their engagement with the audience matters a lot to them. Documentaries don’t get too much commercial attention, and so this kind of filmmaking brings it all back to the creative and personal reasons for making a film. That makes for a close encounter for all involved.” Úna Feely, Festival Programmer

Unfolding rather like a filmic picture book, what results is a lyrical contemplation of mutual observation and peculiar perception. Bestiaire unquestionably approaches its subjects with respect but also a certain curiosity–a contemplation of a stable imbalance, and of loss, tranquillity and the indefinable.

After the macabre discovery of Floribert Chebeya’s body in Kinshasa, Thierry Michel set out with his camera to try to retrace the steps of this internationally known human rights activist. The deeply moving funeral was followed by impressive demonstrations demanding the truth about what quickly began to look like a political assassination. Due to strong international pressure, the trial started five months later. Thierry Michel filmed this extraordinary event where military officers judged chiefs of police. Denials, lies, forgeries, the disappearance of evidence… the trial laid bare all the stratagems the police officers had set in place to prevent the truth from getting out, camouflage their crimes, and protect those truly responsible. Struggling with short-term memory loss, Gustavo has retired from his business and finds some solace in his homeland of Chile by pursuing a childhood dream–competing as a huaso (Chilean cowboy) in rodeos. Awaiting the results of tests to determine whether he has Alzheimer’s, and having long professed he would end his life if it became unbearable, Gustavo begins making preparations for his death, while his family struggles to accept his decision to end his life.

El Huaso explores the pivotal point in one man’s life where he takes it upon himself to shape his own mortality, and is a film imbued with a rare and deep honesty about personal choices amid the spectre of familial guilt.

At the tender age of seventy she started recording and releasing her own music straight from the living room. Seven years later she had fifty-nine albums to her name with more than six-hundred songs–an eccentric myriad of catchy compositions mixing in her pets, found toys, kitchen percussion and Casio keyboards. Sigríður Níelsdóttir is her name, and before long the Icelandic/ Danish musician and visual artist became an adored cult figure in the Icelandic music scene, represented here by her young apprentices Mugison, múm, and Sin Fang of Seabear who pay tribute to the grandma’s irresistibly catchy, yet offbeat pop tunes.

What happens if a teacher decides to film her pupils during the lessons? And what if a pupil decides to film the teacher? This is what happens in a place on the outskirts of Milan where a group of young people organise an after-school programme. It is here that the lives and destinies of a young girl and her “mentor” meet, transforming the portrait of an odd community into a story of a catharsis from a loss. A rare look at school and friendship and the story of a journey from a popular neighbourhood named “King’s Bay” to a place at the North Pole with the same name, through the wonders of the Arctic and the threat of polar bears.

Les Invisibles is a wonderfully warm and charming documentary centering on the often joyous recollections of a number of men and women concerning the joy, happiness, love and sex they have encountered over their long lives. While Lifshitz certainly acknowledges the homophobia and aggression they may have experienced, the camera lens shies away from victimhood and instead focuses on each individual’s journey to personal freedom. An incredibly rewarding viewing experience, Lifshitz coaxes remarkable stories from his interviewees, including an elderly French farmer discussing his various lovers who swam in the local stream with him, and a lesbian couple who were roundly supported and encouraged in their farming endeavours by others in the community. In his feature directorial debut, acclaimed author, visual artist and filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio has fashioned a lively social history that chronicles how a generation of artists, thinkers and activists used their creativity–and their creations– as a response to the reactionary politics that came to define culture in the 1980s. An exuberant mixed-media collage that incorporates graphic art, music, animation and spoken word, the film spans three decades of change–from the cynical heyday of Reagan and Thatcher through to today–and brings together over fifty writers, playwrights, painters, poets, skateboarders, dancers, musicians and rights advocates, all of whom attest to the fact that we can re-imagine the world we live in and take an active role in making that vision a reality. Holiff explores the Johnny-and-Saul relationship as a means to finally get to know his father and, ultimately, himself. Saul Holiff’s audio diaries reveal a tortured soul who lamented his long absences, who neglected his wife and children, who drank too much and who hit his own rock bottom just as his client hit the big time. Three chords, three countries, one revolution: Punk In Africa is the story of the multi-racial punk movement within the recent political and social upheavals experienced in three southern African countries; South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In these societies, the punk subculture represented a genuinely radical political impulse, playing out against a backdrop of intense political struggle, economic hardship and even civil war. Punk In Africa traces this previously untold story from its roots in the underground rock music of early 1970s Johannesburg to the rise of celebratory African-inspired ska bands which sprang up from Cape Town to Maputo in the democratic era of the 1990s. A labour of love that’s full of rare archival footage and wry testimonies – The Wire Magazine Producer Jeffrey Brown Print Source anja.dziersk@kloosundco.de www.punkinafrica.co.za

In this award-winning documentary, the first time directors take a detailed look at the apartheid analogy commonly used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Narrated by Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple), Roadmap To Apartheid is as much a historical document of the rise and fall of apartheid in South Africa as it is a film about why many Palestinians feel they are living in an apartheid system today, and why an increasing number of people around the world agree with them. The viewer sees what life is like for Palestinians in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and inside Israel while gaining a deeper understanding of the conflict with the help of informed analysis on the subject.

After the death of his Jewish father, who survived the Holocaust in Austria, director David Fisher was the only one of his siblings to read his father’s memoirs. For his film, David visits key locations in Austria and speaks with the elderly veterans in the United States who freed his father from the concentration camp. When he gets permission to visit the tunnel in Gusen, where his dad performed forced labor, he takes his two brothers and his sister along. In the voice-over, David reads from his father’s memoirs, often from the very place that is getting described. During the intimate and often difficult conversations, David’s brothers find communicating difficult but there is also a uniquely cynical humour and liberating laughs which reunite the four. How is one drawn to art or science? By inviting scientists to share memories of what sparked their imaginations, Wonder House explores how childhood objects and environments develop young minds.

One soldier describes how they arrested children without extracting any information from them - catching a child was considered to be a prize. He elaborates on the shocking events he encountered and the impact his military experience had on him.

Taking these insights as a starting point and adopting the metaphor of a young girl discovering an old house, Wonder House combines live choreography, stop-motion animation and real scientists’ voices to offer a synthesis of science and art, fact and fiction, imagination and reality.

Jeremy Irons sets out to discover the extent and effects of the global waste problem, as he travels around the world to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution in this profoundly meticulous and brave investigative journey which takes Irons (and us) from scepticism to sorrow and from horror to hope. The beauty of our planet from space forms a violent contrast to the scenes of human detritus across the globe. Vast landscapes in China are covered in tons of rubbish. Children swim among leaking bags; mothers wash in the sewage-filled supply. Each year, we now throw away fifty-eight billion disposable cups, billions of plastic bags, 200 billion litres of water bottles, billions of tons of household waste, toxic waste and e-waste. “We’re looking for films that are arresting, humorous, imaginative, for films that show us something fresh and I truly believe that each of the shorts has earned its place in the programme, on its own cinematic terms. We’re also identifying talent. Each year we screen features films by filmmakers who got their first screening at Cork with their shorts. Kirsten Sheridan and Martin McDonagh for example, both won shorts awards in Cork. This is what a festival can do, provide the arena for talent to emerge. Mick Hannigan, Festival Director “This is, for want of a better word, the art-house cinema of short film. This is the place where you can see a huge breadth of filmmaking styles and genres in one programme; here you can begin to recognise movements and styles emerging from different national cinema. Shorts are a fertile ground for discovering emerging new talent but for us it’s not just about that. Some of these filmmakers will go on to make groundbreaking features or documentaries, some won’t but they have already succeeded in creating something really special here and we get to see it first. Raelene Casey, International Short Film Programmer

TRIBUTE TO PADDY JOLLEY HEADING

Creative Training for Professionals

Paddy Jolley was an enormously influential Irish filmmaker, groundbreaking in his filmic vision and a great friend of the Corona Cork Film Festival. Paddy’s passing earlier this year was a massive loss to the Irish film community. This tribute is in honour to a greatly missed film artist and colleague, who attended the festival annually either to present new work, or often to delve deep into the festival programme, offering incisive comment and enthusiastic support for various elements unearthed. We screen all the short films Paddy presented here, and include his final works. He will be greatly missed by us.

PHIL COLLINS HEADING

National Sculpture Factory in collaboration with the Corona Cork Film Festival present an installation work by world renowned artist Phil Collins. Phil Collins’ films, photographs, installations, and live events often use elements of low–budget television and entertainment industry to dissect the political and aesthetic implications of popular visual formats. His collaborators have ranged from former teachers of Marxism in the GDR to anti–fascist skinheads in Malaysia; from fans of The Smiths over three continents to disco–dancing Palestinians. Collins is based in Berlin and Cologne, where he is a professor of video art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien. His works are held in public collections such as, among others, Tate Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Hosted by a crew of actors and porn workers, and featuring live music by Welsh musician Gruff Rhys and North Wales surf band Y Niwl, This Unfortunate Thing Between Us follows the logic and grammar of the teleshopping channel, including pitches, sales and phone–ins. TUTBU TV brings together a live audience and home viewers in what may well prove to be a glimpse into the future of consumerism while providing an opportunity to face up to our contemporary desires and fears. Phil Collins will be in attendance at the Festival. There are two distinct segments for This Unfortunate Thing Between Us that make up the greater whole, TUTBU 01 on Fri and TUTBU 02 on Sat. CHRISTOPH GIRARDET Christoph Girardet has been producing video tapes and video installations since 1999 and has participated in major shows at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, while also taking part in major film festivals worldwide. Matthias Müller is an artist working in film, video, installation and photography. He is the founder of numerous avant-garde film events and the Museum of Modern Art, New York held a retrospective of his work in 1994. The two artists have been successfully collaborating since their found footage work, Phoenix Tapes, was premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. Their work as a duo has been screened at the film festivals of Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto, New York, Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, and many others.

We are delighted to welcome to Cork, Christoph Girardet, an exceptional film artist both in his own right and as collaborator of Matthias Muller. This is a rare opportunity to experience two programmes of work, curated by Christoph - representing their individual and their extraordinary creative partnership. We present this special programme in partnership with Cork Film Centre.

Programme 1

Programme 2 Tuesday 13th | 6.30pm | Triskel | 76mins Alpsee / Matthias Müller 1994 | 15mins | Colour

A childhood in the ‘60s. A heart beats in the cabinet. Voices rain down on the city. A tree grows on planet Mars. It’s a miracle.

Pianoforte / Christoph Girardet 2007 | 6mins | Colour

Monday 12th | 6.30pm | Triskel | 86mins

Analogous to a piano keyboard, Pianoforte combines eighty-eight film scenes in which pianos are being played into an audio-visual rhapsody.

Nero / Christophe Girardet

Manual / Christoph Girardet, Matthias Müller

2006 | 3mins | Colour

2002 | 10mins | Colour

A boy is standing almost motionless at the window of a Roman villa. He is looking at the burning city that has been copied into the background of the image.

Combining close-ups of redundant technology gleaned from ‘60s US sci-fi television series with a female voice of a ‘40s Hollywood melodrama, Manual makes absolute detachment clash with magnified emotion.

Vacancy / Matthias Müller 1998 | 15mins | Colour

Mirror / Christoph Girardet, Matthias Müller 2003 | 8mins | Colour

Brasilia, the ultimate utopian city as represented in Vacancy, is a place abandoned by its inhabitants, a museum kept alive by its staff only.

Mirror creates an atmospheric image of the ‘in-between’, the nameless sphere between belonging and isolation.

Absence / Christophe Girardet

Kristall / Christoph Girardet, Matthias Müller

2002 | 8mins | Black & White

2006 | 14mins | Colour

The presence of an invisible actor seems to influence minimal cinematic events on theatrical sets. These events combine to become an enigma regarding the phenomenon of disappearance.

Kristall creates a melodrama inside seemingly claustrophobic mirrored cabinets. Like an anonymous viewer, the mirror observes scenes of intimacy.

Beacon / Christophe Girardet, Matthias Müller

Contre-Jour / Christoph Girardet, Matthias Müller

2002 | 15mins | Colour

2009 | 11mins | Colour and Black & White

Beacon is a montage of location shots filmed at different places around the world. Each of these sites is located by the sea.

IFI National & Corona Cork Film Festival Present -

dice and splice, trigger and reconfigure

An Ulster Punk Trilogy Our annual collaboration with the Irish Film Institute allows us to rediscover treasures from the IFI Irish Film Archive and to present them to new audiences. This year, serendipitously, the completion of new feature drama Good Vibrations coincides with the digital re-mastering of John T. Davis’ Shellshock Rock, Self Conscious Over You and Protex Hurrah, three films which document the actual men, music and mayhem of Ulster punk in the late 1970s. We are delighted to present these original films as primary evidence of those pulsating times and as testament to John T. Davis’ unerring talent as an astute documentarian of a vibrant subculture.

The Corona Cork Film Festival continues our exploration of the interface between music and film in this special performance. Fire and Ice dice and splice, trigger and reconfigure film in a live electronic music and visual performance. Setting loose the narrative, a new interplay of image and sound is created. With a sensibility that is part DJ, part bricoleur, part stunt double, part smarty pants, peripheral moments are elevated to iconic status and the familiar tropes of a particular film genre are reworked into digital gold.

Once Upon a Good Time in the Bad and Ugly West In this special event, Fire and Ice performs and plays with the American Western genre. The ambiguity of the central character who is at once hero and anti-hero lights the spark for this work.

Biography Fire and Ice is Jeffrey Weeter and Paul Deuth, electronic musicians and video artists. Originally from Chicago, they are master remixers of film, television and music in live performance. This appearance at the Corona Cork Film Festival marks their 10th year as the performance duo Fire and Ice.

Shellshock Rock

Self-Conscious Over You

1979 | 50mins | Colour

1980 | 40mins | Colour

Shellshock Rock captures the bristling raw energy of the Northern Irish punk scene in the late ‘70s. Mirroring the rough aesthetic of the music, with much of the filming carried out in dingy bars and music clubs – the Harp Bar, the Pound and in Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations record shop, the film effectively tells the story of a teen rebellion that had nothing to do with the sectarian divide. It features the music of Protex, the Undertones, Rudi, The Outcasts and Stiff Little Fingers and is punctuated by interviews with Terri Hooley, band members, and a series of disarmingly inarticulate young Belfast punks. Shellshock Rock was selected and then inexplicably and controversially deselected, deemed “not technically up to standard”, by the 1979 Cork Film Festivals Screening Committee. It went on to win a silver medal at the International Film and TV Festival in New York and to garner critical acclaim at a series of festivals around the world. Shellshock Rock returns here, triumphant, after 33 years.

In this sequel to Shellshock Rock, Davis captures the joyful concert organised by Good Vibration Records at the Ulster Hall in April 1980 when almost 1,800 people crammed in to enjoy local band The Outcasts. The concert (which provides the climax to the new feature drama) was to be a thank you and a farewell from Good Vibrations, but such was the response that Hooley changed his mind and pledged to keep the label going until the money ran out.

Protex Hurrah 1980 | 15mins | Colour

John T. Davis meets Belfast band, Protex on a US tour in 1980. They are captured in playful mode as they mingle with the crowds during the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and later that night they perform at New York’s Hurrah Club. The programme will be introduced by director John T. Davis.

FREE RADICALS

FREE RADICALS Thursday 15th | 4.30pm | Gate Cinema

Through the off-screen contributions of scientists and intellectuals and the use of its omniscient camera, Michael Palm’s documentary, Low Definition Control, considers the power of surveillance images. With its warnings of an eye that is always open it surmises that the idea of an image as an image is history. As it reminds us of the danger, Low Definition Control affirms the power of images. While Palm’s film funnels back to larger democratic issues his invitation to consider images could be a guiding principal of the Free Radicals programme. Here, throughout these programmes, the filmmakers both appropriate and play with images; whether, for example, its Henry Hills’ assemblage of personally shot and found footage, Ken Jacobs’ manipulation of a moment through tinting and frame changes or Ben Russell’s capturing of something invisible to the eye. Even Manfred Neuwirth’s unyielding documentation can raise the question: Can we trust what we see or do we just enjoy the view?

Both films will be screened together A globally-composed, musically arranged montage-round: so Henry Hills’s Arcana appears to be, a fulminant 30-minute cut-up epic that takes footage–both found and shot by the filmmaker–and crosses it in an almost arithmetic manner with a pre-arranged soundtrack. The basis is a written film treatment of the musician John Zorn, in which 254 scenes, bundled into 15 sequences, are captured in short, sometimes cryptic descriptions.

Catchphrases such as ‘I cannn’t do it!’ and ‘he’s shtone mad for shpeed!’ have been adapted into everyday speech across the city and country. The man behind Sminky is Jason Sullivan, a multimedia student in Cork Institute of Technology. Meet Sminky includes the best of the Sminky animations plus some never-seen-before additions.

RED FM DJ Dave MacArdle will introduce the screening and facilitate a public interview with Jason.

We want an auditorium teeming with smartphones and smartguys and smartgirls to make this a truly interactive festival experience.

Follow us on @CorkFilmFest for details of 42nd Tweet and all the other festival info.

We¹ll screen a programme of superb shorts for tweeters’ amusement and delectation. And after each short film there will be an opportunity for audience members to tweet a short critique for followers and the filmmakers to read. There will be prizes for sharp insights, (t)witty reports and, of course, for the 42nd tweet!

CELEBRATIONS OF LIGHT

The Odd Life of Timothy Greene

“Some of these short films will never be seen in mainstream cinema, and realistically people don’t have the opportunity. Watching 1,000 children over the week engage with international filmmakers, this is creating a new experience for them. Some of the films address issues, but you trust in the audience to draw their own conclusions. This really is creating a new audience for film and a new experience for the audience.” Katherine O’Riordan, Education & Industry

PARAMOUNT CLASSICS Celebrating 100 years of Paramount we present two of their timeless classics, presented for the first time following their recent digital restoration.

Sunday 18th | 4.30pm | Gate Cinema

With the idiosyncratic American fable Harold and Maude, countercultural director Hal Ashby fashioned what would become the cult classic of its era. Working from a script by Colin Higgins, Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care, bohemian octogenarian. Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Harold And Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class, gender, and age, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

The African Queen John Huston USA | 1951 | 105mins | Colour

John Huston’s The African Queen is the heart-rending tale of two companions with wildly differing personalities who find themselves catapulted into a love affair as they travel downriver in East Africa at the beginning of World War I. Romantic, exciting and often hilarious in parts, this is the pinnacle of Hollywood’s Golden Age of escapism. Based on the 1935 novel of the same name by C.S. Forester, Humphrey Bogart excels as a gin-swilling river trader, unshaven and unorthodox throughout, with Katherine Hepburn playing a prim African missionary spinster, both attempting to escape the Germans via the Ulonga-Bora River. Director Huston crafted a thoroughly quixotic film, which also served as his first outing in colour and sealed his reputation as one of Hollywood’s definitive directors of the era.
